Resident Evil 7, Texas Chainsaw & Deep South Horror

There's an unforgettable scene in Tobe Hooper's horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre where Sally, the final victim of the murderous Sawyer family, is bound to a chair and forced to break bread with her captors. The family bicker and tease one another in a chilling perversion of a Norman Rockwell painting, before chainsaw-wielding igor Leatherface arrives in full matriarchal costume to complete the picture.

It's a scene echoed near beat for beat in Capcom's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which also takes place in the Deep South. Marguerite, Jack and Lucas Baker are this generation's Sawyers, willing you to take part in their twisted practices, to sit at the dinner table and eat the decaying remains of their victims while they literally rot beside you.

EA Puts the Brakes on Skate 4 Rumors

EA has confirmed there's no Skate 4. At least, not yet.

On January 28, EA community manager Daniel Lingen got the hype machine primed and ready when he tweeted out "#skate4." During the question and answer period EA's quarterly investors call, it flat-out said it's "not presently making Skate 4."

That doesn't mean there's no future for the Skate franchise, but it just means we may be waiting quite a while before we're flicking sticks and landing tricks again.

Skate 3 came out way back in 2010. The good news, at least for Xbox One owners, is that Skate 3 is backwards compatible on Xbox One, so you don't need to pull out your last gen system to play it.

A Star Wars Story We Want: The Ancient Jedi

The Star Wars Expanded Universe may be gone, but some of the saga's grand history involving the ancient Jedi could still be made into amazing standalone movies. A Star Wars Story like Knights of the Old Republic or Dawn of the Jedi, for example, could thrill mainstream crowds and old-school fanboys alike.

Many fans were not happy when Disney declared the EU to no longer be canon (retitling it Legends in the process). But what if the Legends could return? Star Wars Rebels has already introduced Grand Admiral Thrawn into the new timeline, and if the rumors are true that Woody Harrelson is playing Garris Shrike in the Han Solo movie, then Thrawn won't be the only EU character to be making a comeback. More intriguingly, a recent episode of Star Wars Rebels alluded to a war in the past between the Jedi and Mandalore. Star Wars fans may recall that the Mandalorian Wars were a critical part of the backstory for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which is also one of the all-time great Star Wars video games. If aspects of KOTOR are still canon, then there could be ripe material from that era for a future Star Wars anthology film to explore. And it's not the only piece of ancient Star Wars history that deserves to be fleshed out on the big screen…

Fire Emblem Heroes Isn’t a Mobile Knock-Off

Fire Emblem Heroes feels like the ultimate crossover comic book for a Nintendo universe full of heroes and villains. And it could not have come at a better time for the long-running, turn-based strategy series. After years of niche status, Fire Emblem is in the middle of a renaissance since 2013's successful FE Awakening on Nintendo 3DS. The new free-to-play mobile game appears to be a faithful experience, but one that uses random selection mechanics, called Gacha, as motivation for players to build an unstoppable FE dream team.

The mobile debut of Fire Emblem uses the same tried-and-true battle language of the series, but it makes a few changes too. Hardcore fans will recognize the familiar weapon triangle, a series mainstay that uses a rock, paper, scissors system to determine which weapons dominate in an engagement (sword are strong against axes, axes beat spears, and spears get a damage boost versus swords). It's an elegant system that can always be found at the lower right of the screen. Every skirmish takes place on a single screen map, so you can position your troops and attack using a single hand while you're riding the bus or train. The smaller battlefields appear much simpler at first than the larger ones we've seen on the 3DS, but they feel engineered for quicker turn-based matches on the go.

Take my first encounter with a Tallneck, Guerrilla Games' combination giraffe/robot/Ubisoft tower/brontosaurus creatures. As I picked through the vine-wrapped ruins of a human city, I stopped to take in the view – girders of golden hour sunlight pushing past improbably crooked high-rise buildings and discoloured steeples. The Orks of Dawn of War 3 Are Brutish, Clever Fun

From RPGs and RTS games to pretty much everything else, I rarely manage to find the fun in straightforward solutions. I want resources to manage and decisions to make; extra layers of consideration that make me feel crafty for having one. It's this preference for finesse over brute force that's kept me away from factions like the Orks in most strategy games, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3 looks to be the sole exception: though they certainly aren't performing rokkit science, Relic's rendition of da boyz have just enough brains to make their substantial brawn a lot of fun to run amok with.

The main reason for this is scrap - yes as is in scrap metal. Scrap is generated any time Orks destroy a mechanized enemy unit, or when one of their own bites the proverbial dust. It sounds unassuming, yes, but it's cleverly woven into nearly every part of the Ork gameplan, giving them a overall style that really is their own. You don't have to take my word for it either, just check out this video of a full Ork mission playthrough for a better sense.

Urban Empire Review

There's a case to be made that Urban Empire is a perfect city sim for our times. Many traditional city sims grant us autocratic control, and the whims and wants of the populace largely remain abstractions and jumbles of figures. Urban Empire, though, focuses on the grim reality of the bickering, backstabbing, and befriending that goes on in a mayor's relationship with multiple political parties before any proposal becomes a reality. It's an approach that's commendable for its realism, but in this case, it's one that quickly grows predictable and occasionally dull.

It starts out promisingly enough. Urban Empire keeps its ambitions manageable by limiting the gameplay to the two-century span between 1820 and 2020, and it injects some volatility by mirroring the economic effects of events like the recession of the 1840s and the First World War. It drives home its focus on people by making you not a detached puppet master, but rather a member of one of four dynasties with different histories and ambitions. There are the starkly conservative Von Pflizens, for example, and the Sant'Elias clan who believes good technology can fix everything.

"We love tight competitive gameplay more than anyone, but World War II was defined by its massive battles and invasions, and we want to bring that experience to Days of War with 100-player combat," explained lead designer Lee Snodgrass.

AOC G2460PQU 144Hz Gaming Monitor Review

AOC offers no less than 6 versions of the G2460 24" monitor, and its "PQU" variant falls roughly into the middle of its lineup since it has a higher refresh rate than a standard monitor, but doesn't include adaptive refresh rate technology. The G2460PQU (See it on Amazon) is considered the "extreme professional" version since it does sport the 144Hz refresh rate, and at $279 it's in the upper tier of pricing for 144Hz, 24" monitors. Gears of War 4 Gets Versus Social Cross-Play

Microsoft and The Coalition are now allowing Xbox One and PC players to fight against one another in Gears of War 4.

The game's social quickplay is now a cross-play playlist, according to the Xbox Wire. That means Xbox One and PC players can duke it out in Gears of War 4's versus multiplayer.

The move is planned to be permanent, after these first few months serve as a trial. The Coalition actually tested out Gears of War 4 multiplayer cross-play back in December for a weekend.

Dark and Light Wants to Convert Fantasy Fans

When the first teaser for Snail Games' Dark and Light dropped in 2016, the initial response viewed it as The Witcher 3-meets-Ark: Survival Evolved. But while comparisons can be made to both, Dark and Light is very much trying to be its own beast; a survival RPG far less story-driven than The Witcher 3 yet far more forgiving than Ark.

"We want to find a good balance between the openness of the game, the sandbox nature, and also giving players an idea of what to do," associate producer Jonathon Stebel told me during a recent visit to Snail Games' Los Angeles office. "It's daunting when you just get dropped into a world when you're surrounded by hostile creatures and it's pitch black out. It's really hard to get into it, especially if you're not already into that genre. We're trying to figure out ways to still let players do whatever they want without having their hand held, but introduce new players to the genre who are coming from fantasy games: RPGs, MMOs."

Could Heartbound Be the Next Undertale?

At its core, Heartbound is a charming indie game about a boy and his dog. It takes place from a top-down perspective, just like the old-school 16-bit style roleplaying games that inspired it. Comparisons to recent indie hits like OneShot and Undertale are obvious, but aren't actually the chief inspirations for this latest experimental endeavor.

"The biggest inspirations for me were things that I personally went through in my life," explains Jason Thor Hall, Game Director at Pirate Software, and lead programmer on the project. "Seeing how people deal with trauma and mental issues was a big factor and just learning how to gamify those topics in a way that's relatable but not overbearing. In terms of specific games from a narrative and design perspective, I loved Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger."

Obsidian CEO Reveals Fallout 3 That Never Released

Obsidian Entertainment CEO Fergus Urquhart, who worked on a number of classic role-playing games, including the early Fallout titles and the Baldur's Gate series at Black Isle Studios, has come forward to shed light on a third Fallout game that was never released.

On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, Urquhart revealed that before Black Isle began work on its more widely known Fallout 3 project, codenamed Van Buren, the studio also worked on another version of Fallout 3 that ultimately led to the creation of Icewind Dale.

"It was actually the second Fallout 3," Urquhart said of Van Buren, noting that Black Isle's first Fallout 3 project was in the works a bit earlier, after Fallout 2 was complete and Planescape: Torment was still in development.

Resident Evil 7 Proves VR Is More Than Just a Gimmick

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard's 10 hour campaign can be played entirely in virtual reality — every jump scare, every grueling boss fight, every disgusting enemy encounter, experienced up close and uncomfortably personal with the help of Sony's PlayStation VR headset.

As someone who was initially skeptical about how a full-length, entirely VR-optional game would work in VR, I was surprised to discover that it was actually… pretty good!

So far, most successful or well-known virtual reality experiences have been created specifically with VR in mind: Job Simulator, Batman: Arkham VR, and so on. These games take advantage of VR's unique offerings to craft moments that wouldn't be the same played on a screen. Seeing your hands in-game using PlayStation Move or the HTC Vive controllers goes a long way to make you feel physically present in a virtual world, even if you are just sloppily putting together cartoon sandwiches in a comedy game. But while it's important for developers to identify what some of VR's specialized capabilities are sooner rather than later, the result has been a lot of games attempting to experiment with the same few ideas, over and over again. It's easy for VR skeptics to feel unsure about whether these isolated mechanics are enough to carry a full-length AAA game campaign.

12 Things You Need to Know About Ni No Kuni 2

Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom has to be one of my most anticipated games this year. 2013's Wrath of the White Witch, after all, was – in many ways - a dream JRPG. Sure, it had its fair share of familiar systems and grindy combat, but its themes were deep, its characters charismatic and its presentation stunning. What else would you expect from a title with Studio Ghibli-produced 2D cutscenes, a Joe Hisaishi score and a beautiful, cel-shaded visual aesthetic?

Fast forward to 2017 and I've just been given my first proper look at the sequel – Revenant Kingdom – and it did not disappoint. The game is coming from the same core creative team, and the gameplay demo I saw confirmed that Level-5 hasn't been afraid to make sweeping changes, as hinted at in the most recent trailer. I also found out a bunch of cool new details about the characters and world. Let's run through 12 things you need to know about Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding, and Building the Studio

Ghost Recon Wildlands takes the tactical shooter in a new direction, its open world offering a new level of freedom and opportunity for the series. The Ghosts are dropped deep inside Bolivia, a country ruled by the drug cartel Santa Blanca and its hired private army, Unidad. But by targeting Santa Blanca's sicarios leading to the Ghosts can restore balance to the country.

Wildlands is a very different type of Ghost Recon game, to the point it doesn't really feel much like it belongs to the series at times. The fundamentals are present – your squad of four grunts, the ever-satisfying sync shot and a smattering of tactics – but the shift to an open world has had a much bigger impact than just the size of the map.

The Magicians Wants You To Know It's Messing With You

The Magicians isn't going to wait long to resolve its big Season 1 cliffhanger, but expect the Syfy fantasy series to take you on one heck of an unexpected journey from there.

Full spoilers for The Magicians: Season 1 continue below.

We visited the Season 2 set of The Magicians back in October when the show was filming its eighth episode, and already the stars were incredibly buttoned up on the many plot twists and turns had taken to get to that point. Considering the majority of the cast whose characters we saw die in the Season 1 finale were working on set that day, it's safe to say that all hope is not lost for our favorite group of Brakebills magicians, but co-showrunner John McNamara teased that the question of whether Quentin & co survive is just the tip of the iceberg.

Project Scorpio Is a "Full Blown Next-Gen Machine" Says Dev

An Xbox developer has spoken out on the rumoured power of upcoming console upgrade, Project Scorpio.

Creator of Ori and the Blind Forest, Thomas Mahler took to NeoGAF to answer a question about whether Scorpio is a PS4 Pro style console update, or a whole new generation of Xbox console. His answer - it's sort of both:

"Scorpio isn't just a half-assed upgrade (which the PS4 Pro kinda is...), but a full blown next-gen machine that's just backwards-compatible to your current library."

That's a little outside of the company line - Microsoft has previously downplayed the idea of a separation between its consoles, even saying that Scorpio will put an end to the idea of console generations altogether.

Project Scorpio Info Leak Re-Confirms 6 Teraflop GPU

A look at official information from Microsoft about the upcoming Project Scorpio has been analyzed and gives more clues as to the power of the iterative update to the Xbox One.

Digital Foundry, who made a video sourcing information from a public-facing Microsoft report, says the whitepaper confirms Scorpio is getting a different RAM architecture than Xbox One, four times the L2 cache, and gives more evidence of a six teraflop GPU.

That means the GPU in Scorpio has around 4.5 times the compute power of the current Xbox One.

Digital Foundry's analysis also casts doubt the CPU will have AMD's new Zen architecture, and will instead use chips based on the Jaguar family, as is the current case with Xbox One, PS4, and PS4 Pro.

Being an independent developer, Stoic doesn't plan on taking any outside funding "to bring this series home, we'd love Kickstarter support to add additional features that are simply beyond our current budget," said John Watson, co-founder and Technical Director at Stoic.
