Reggie Fils-Aime Reveals How Many NES Classic Editions Shipped to Retailers Worldwide

Following the NES Classic Edition's discontinuation earlier this month, Nintendo has revealed just how many units of the specialty hardware were shipped around the world.

Speaking to IGN, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed that Nintendo "sold in 2.3 million units" worldwide since the system's launch on November 11, 2016.

For those unfamiliar, "sell in" means units shipped to retailers to be sold through to consumers. In January, Nintendo revealed it had sold through 1.5 million NES Classic Edition units, which means at least 65 percent of that current worldwide shipped number was sold through as of February 1, 2017. Fils-Aime did not offer updated sold through numbers, however, but did say note the "NES Classic was originally planned to be a product for this past holiday."

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 3 Review

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 3 is as bloody and chaotic as its bombastic sci-fi universe demands. After its predecessor memorably focused almost exclusively on unit tactics, the pendulum has swung back toward larger armies and basic base-building, creating some extremely challenging micromanagement with a complex set of rules that makes it tough to dive into. It's not big on variety and its campaign has a scattered pace, but it's a good real-time strategy game that makes some bold moves.

With its focus on controlling up to three powerful hero characters next to disposable troops, Dawn of War 3 feels like a spiritual successor to Blizzard's divisive Warcraft 3, the game from which DotA and the entire MOBA genre was born. Dawn of War 3 is distinctly set apart by major differences like Relic's signature control point resource generation systems, but its abandonment of Dawn of War 2's cover, suppression, and weapon facing systems make give it more of that fun and fast old-school pacing. A little sadly, though, it feels less like Relic's own unique style as a result.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 Review

Playing Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3, if you've played games from similar series like Far Cry and Sniper Elite, gives a constant sense of deja vu. Its mechanics mostly competently echo those more popular franchises, but it doesn't do any single thing notably better. Most of the time a new game in a thriving genre has a unique idea that distinguishes it and gives it a reason to exist, but not Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. Yet, despite this lack of innovation, it still executes its open-world stealth combat well enough that it ends up being a fun and tightly constructed game that doesn't overstay its welcome. Or it would be, if not for numerous graphical and technical problems.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Feels the Influence of the MCU

Many themes run through Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, but "partnership" is on point. Capcom is working closely with editors from Marvel Comics to form a world that truly feels like a combination of the best of both - for example, in Avengers Tower, instead of the infamous Jarvis, Tony Stark communes with a Dr. Light artificial intelligence.

Partnership extends beyond the story and sets and into the battles. Infinite pairs teams of two, a departure from the Versus tradition of three-person squads. In place of a third spandex-clad anchor, you take one of the six Infinity Stones into the fight. Each of the Stones gives your team access to all new attacks and effects, acting almost like the third member of your squad. The Infinity Stones give the ability to create space between you and an enemy, explore new combo options, increase your damage or speed, and more. For example, the Time gem allows your fighters to dash around the screen, coaxing mobility from even the slowest and most cumbersome of the cast, and when fully charged, it infuses your heroes with speed that bend the rules of what the mechanics allow. The versatility presented by the Stones means that gone are the days of ignoring characters that might be your favorites from comics or other games simply because they don't synergize with your team or their weaknesses are hard to overcome. Now, choose two fighters you think are cool and get to work.

What Remains of Edith Finch Review

What Remains of Edith Finch sits alongside Kentucky Route Zero as one of the finest magical-realism stories in all of video games. A first-person, story-driven experience akin to Gone Home and Firewatch, it tells the incredible, tragic, and constantly surprising multi-generational history of the Finch family. As you explore the the gorgeous labyrinthine home, you'll go on a guided history of each family member, delve into what may or may not be a familial curse, and ultimately learn how each one succumbed to it. Developer Giant Sparrow (known for The Unfinished Swan) has once again created something truly special.

In the two hours it took me to fully explore I ran the emotional gamut from feeling completely devastated to full of an energetic light to annoyed by noticeable performance dips, especially when I approached the house for the first time. The only challenge is finding a way into each locked room of the house, generally through the use of secret passages that make the whole thing exude the charm and imagination of a pop-up book. While exploring the house, the last living member of the Finch family, Edith, narrates with stories of the house, her family, and how the incredible lives they lived untimely came to an end.

Call of Duty: WWII Ditches Superheroes for Humanity and Horror

Call of Duty, and shooters in general, have slowly moved away from telling the stories of flawed, limited humans, instead focusing on giving players the power fantasy of embodying what amounts to a defacto superhero. But with Call of Duty: WWII, developer Sledgehammer Games wants to change that.

A Visual History of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 3

Taglines don't get much more bleak than the one for Warhammer 40,000: "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war." In addition to spawning the term "grimdark," that tagline does a good job of letting players know what they're in for once they enter this endlessly violent sci-fi universe.

Many video games have been set in this fictional realm, but Relic Entertainment's Dawn of War series is probably the most highly regarded. Ever since its 2004 debut, fans have been blasting their way through futuristic war zones, eradicating every enemy on the map. With the third installment just around the corner, let's go back to the beginning to see how far this series has come.

Playing HotS Isn't Mandatory for New Overwatch Skins

Blizzard is enticing Overwatch owners to engage with Heroes of the Storm by offering exclusive skins for playing the MOBA. But the Genji and D.Va costumes will eventually come to standard loot boxes in the team-based shooter.

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan addressed the issue on the game's official Battle.net forum. A console player was upset that they might never see the Oni Genji or Officer D.Va skins because they don't play the PC game.

No worries, Kaplan said. Blizzard is totally aware of this. "... We plan to add both the Oni Genji skin and the Officer D.Va skin to the normal, base Overwatch loot box at some point in the future," he said.

Little Nightmares Review

Hide and Seek is a horror game. You run from a pursuer, hurriedly choose a hiding spot, then just wait – with only breath and heartbeat in your ears – for a pair of legs to pass your slim field of view. They stop. You stop breathing. They pass. You start breathing. And then they're back, you're caught, the game is over. It's a design that horror games have always favoured, but where most shock by using the moment of being found, Little Nightmares captures something more nuanced: that creeping fright of waiting to be caught.

If you were going to be dull about it, you'd describe Little Nightmares as a 2D stealth puzzle platformer. Guiding a tiny, raincoated character called Six from left to right through the sea-swaying innards of The Maw (an ocean facility with a slowly revealed, despicable purpose) is a matter of avoiding instant-death hazards and gentle puzzling about how to proceed – but it rarely feels as plainly mechanical as that. At around five hours long, Little Nightmares feels slightly too brief –- the implied sense of scale suggests there was surely more Maw to see than the route Six takes –- but that's perhaps testament to how much fun Tarsier has with throwing ideas at us and leaving them aside once they're done.

Mr. Shifty Review

The heist at the heart of Mr. Shifty kicks off with an explosive bang, like a pulpy late-'80s action movie. You play the role of a mysterious super-powered criminal whose nifty ability to teleport across short distances and punch unsuspecting foes in the face keeps Mr. Shifty's momentum going despite a story that soon becomes forgettable (like a pulpy late-'80s action movie), but not through the awful slowdown issues in its final act.

The best moments of Mr. Shifty made me feel like a complete, no-nonsense comic book badass. By using a combination of your warping ability and some quick melee reflexes you can take out a group of gun-toting security guards and beat them to a satisfying pulp before they can get off the one shot that would kill you if it connects, or you can get crafty and carefully guide a seeking missile back toward the turret that fired it. You can still sense vague feelings of badassery when you bypass laser grids or warp past unaware guards. The art direction uses heavy shadows on Mr. Shifty's blue trench coat and environments, giving the colorful backdrops an inky, comic book vibe that fits into the overall tone.

4 Things We Want in a Pokemon Nintendo Switch Game

If the Nintendo Switch proves itself to be a worthy home to Pokemon with the rumored Pokemon Stars, we could see a brand new, mainline Pokemon entry come to the Nintendo Switch — the first mainline Pokemon game to ever hit a home console.

Previous Pokemon home console RPGs, Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, were incredibly limited compared to the core Pokemon games on handhelds, but for a reason. When coming up with the idea for Pokemon, the creators wanted something that would connect people, and handheld consoles (especially before the age of online games) were the best way to do that. GameFreak co-founder Junichi Masuda has said the Pokemon core series is always going to be on handheld hardware, but also commented, "I mean in the future it'd be nice to work on other systems if they were more portable."

Speaking to the game's backstory, Gollop told us the Phoenix Project was formed "shortly after the second world war" as a U.N.-funded, worldwide organization. "It was organized on a sleeper cell basis," he said, "so the idea was that in when the world is in peril, "these cells would come together at specific points all over the world" to deal with the looming crisis.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 Review

When Dragon Quest Heroes hit the scene in 2015, it delivered a solid mashup of two very different genres: classic RPGs and hack-and-slash action. Now, Square Enix and Koei-Tecmo have teamed up again to deliver another monster-mashing, magic-slinging, army-crushing action-adventure in Dragon Quest Heroes 2. While it improves on the original in some ways, it stumbles a bit in the quest to transition Dragon Quest from its RPG roots into an action game.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 begins with the lead characters, a pair of cousins, suddenly thrust into a surprise conflict between two formerly peaceful kingdoms. As they adventure forth, they meet new friends and unravel evil conspiracy to bring all of the world's kingdoms to war and fulfill an ancient prophecy. The story's a marked improvement over the weak, "Oh no, the monsters are evil now" plot of the first Dragon Quest Heroes, and it develops in interesting ways. The characters it introduces are likable, the storyline – though somewhat predictable – kept me wanting to see what happens next, and the top-notch English localization added a lot of life and humor to both crucial story scenes and incidental dialogue. Characters from other Dragon Quest games will also pop in throughout the course of the story, and as a longtime fan of the series seeing familiar favorite characters appear and join my merry adventuring band was quite a treat, even though the story focus remains squarely on the all-new Dragon Quest Heroes 2 cast.

The Walking Dead - A New Frontier Episode 4 Review

As its name suggests, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier's fourth episode, "Thicker Than Water," confronts Javi with the ideas of whether the bonds of blood or friendship are more important to him. Unfortunately, the path getting to those decisions before the strong ending is far less enjoyable than much of this season has been so far.

"Thicker Than Water" hurtles forward with the mistaken idea that Joan, the villain introduced in episode 3, is a force to be reckoned with. She remains so undeveloped that her big moments at the start and end of the episode paint her as little more than the standard Walking Dead caricature of a villain. She essentially exists as a plot device to reflect some of Javi's choices in the last few episodes. Considering the back and forth of Javi's antagonistic relationship with his brother David, Joan's instant rise to prominence in the plot feels much less natural in its incorporation.

Outlast 2 Review

Not for the faint of heart, Outlast 2's relentless scares, unforgiving monsters, and provocative meditations on faith are an anxiety-inducing but cathartic horror experience. While it suffers from a couple of pacing problems and some finicky navigation issues, its careful - and sadistic - manipulation of my fight-or-flight reflex had me experiencing an overwhelming sense of dread throughout, which abated only once the credits were rolling. The ending, however, stayed with me for days.

Outlast 2 benefits from ditching the somewhat tired mental asylum setting of the original and travelling the less-trodden road of the Sonoran Desert, where protagonist Blake Langermann is searching for his wife Lynn after crash landing in the cult-ridden Supai region during an investigative journalism assignment. Outlast 2 is deep South horror, but without the trappings of domesticity we saw in Resident Evil 7; Supai is untamed cornfields, dilapidated shacks, and – go figure – gory remnants of unspeakable religious rites.

Why Bots Are Still Relevant to Games Today

One of my favourite memories from my teen years is teaming up with my siblings to play Perfect Dark deathmatch on the Nintendo 64. Not against each other, but a team of simulants, or bots—AI designed to mirror the playing tactics and styles of real players. This was a time before digital downloads, one click matchmaking and vast online communities became commonplace and the novelty factor of playing with or against AI bots was enormous. Without the Internet, multiplayer gaming was restricted wholly to local multiplayer, or to a LAN if you were lucky enough to have multiple PCs and the space. The idea of jumping online to play a few quick rounds of deathmatch was but a dream at that point, but the creation of AI bots meant that solo players could have a sweet taste of the action.

A Look Back at the First Year of Overwatch

Looking at the sheer force that is Blizzard's Overwatch, it can feel a little strange to realise that it's only been out for a year. Thanks to an all-round open-arm embrace by the public at large, a universe that has extended its reach to animated shorts and comics, the continued support and community-driven focus of Blizzard, and the exciting competitive side seen in seasonal play and the first Overwatch World Cup -- for many people out there, a world without Overwatch would be hard to imagine.

It's also worth mentioning that while we're officially a year in, this was a game that had a full head of steam well before release. Overwatch hit the ground running the moment it was announced. "Come release time, honestly, to me it kind of felt that we were out already," Overwatch Principal Designer, Geoff Goodman confesses. "Even at that point we had being seeing cosplay and the public had embraced a lot of what had been shown."

Super Bomberman R Getting Silent Hill DLC

Konami will be adding new characters from various Konami franchises - including Silent Hill's Pyramid Head - to Nintendo Switch exclusive Super Bomberman R.

Announced alongside a free DLC drop released today, a future update will add costumes based on Vic Viper from Gradius, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, and Pyramid Head from Silent Hill. A solid release date and whether these characters will cost any money have not been revealed yet.

It's not the first time Pyramid Head - the frankly terrifying manifestation of Silent Hill 2's protagonist's punishing guilt for the death of his wife - has been used in a... strange context; he has appeared as a playable character in New International Track and Field, as well as Krazy Kart Racing on mobile.

Halo Wars 2 DLC Delayed to Fix "Game-Breaking" Bug

343 Industries has revealed that a "game-breaking" bug is responsible for the delayed release of the new Colony DLC for Halo Wars 2.

Originally slated for release earlier this month, Colony - a new army leader based on Halo's Hunters - has still not seen an appearance due to a crippling bug which revolved around new Skitterer units. These Skitterers can be attached to friendly units and act as an auto-targeting turret - unfortunately the bug meant that, once locked on, Skitterers could continue firing at enemies despite range and line of sight, meaning they could fire from across the map.

Developers realised that this bug would become "... a cheap exploit that would immediately result in some really bad game experiences and

Heroes of the Storm Giving Away 20 Heroes Free

Blizzard is giving players the opportunity to score 20 characters for free, in the form of newly-announced Mega Bundles from their hero brawler Heroes of the Storm.

Mega Bundles are themed to include 20 heroes that fit into one of four styles, which Blizzard have dubbed Assassin, Flex, Support & Specialist, and Tanks & Bruisers.  Once a bundle has been chosen all other bundles will be locked out for that user, but the remaining characters are still accessible to purchase individually within the game.

You can check out the full list of bundles on Blizzard's website.

With the release of the 2.0 patch - which is going to make the game bigger and better than before on April 25 - all players will be given enough of the in-game currency "gems" to unlock one of the newly announced Mega Bundles.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality Review

The world of Adult Swim's sociopathic mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his pubescent grandson Morty is full of ludicrous wonders and madcap danger, and Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality gives fans a new way to put themselves right in the middle of it with a fun and funny - though short - Touch-enabled VR experience.

You play the role of one (of the potentially infinite supply of) Clone Mortys, each of which is little more than an expendable floating head and set of hands designed by Rick to help with mundane tasks like doing laundry or repairing his spaceship. The scenarios get more involved as you go, and developer Owlchemy (of Job Simulator fame) does a good job of keeping the pacing up by cycling through several hallmark VR tasks like solving puzzles, environmental exploration, and the occasional shooting gallery.

Valve Adds Phone Number Requirement for Dota 2 Ranked Matchmaking

Valve has announced a number of major changes to Dota 2's matchmaking, most notably an all-new feature that would require players to link their phone number to their Steam account in order to play ranked matchmaking.

According to the post on the Dota 2 Blog, the developers hope that this change will cut down on players using multiple accounts and lead to a more positive matchmaking experience at all skill levels. Players will have until May 4th to register their numbers, at which point any account without a linked number will be ineligible for ranked play.

In addition to phone number linking, Valve is bringing back solo queue along with an option to only match against other players that are queuing alone. In the past some solo players would occasionally be placed in matches with teams to speed up the matchmaking process, but now players can choose to opt out of these games.

Ganondorf's Last Name Resurfaces on Official Nintendo Site

It may not help you beat him in any of The Legend of Zelda games, but Nintendo has reconfirmed one major piece of information about the series' recurring foe Ganondorf — his canonical last name.

The official Legend of Zelda website includes a character compendium, and the entry for the frequent Zelda villain reveals his full name is Ganondorf Dragmire, a name that has seemingly not been used in any official capacity since The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Zelda Top March 2017 Sales

The top-selling game in the US for March 2017 was Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, followed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Breath of the Wild came in at second place in spite of digital sales not being accounted for in NPDs tally. Similarly, Horizon Zero Dawn and MLB 17: The Show had strong showings on the top 10 list without accounting for digital sales.

Last week, Nintendo revealed it sold 906,000 Switch consoles in the first 28 days of the console's release, and sold 925,000 copies of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Switch during the same period, giving it the highest attach rate for "any non-bundled title" on new hardware since NPD began tracking in 1995.

The Witness Designer Shows Early Prototype of Next Game

Jonathan Blow, lead designer on The Witness, revealed a small glimpse of one of his upcoming games during a presentation at Reboot Develop.

"This is a work-in-progress," Blow explained. "These are not final visuals, but it's a nice little grid-based game. I've got a guy who can run around and push blocks and stuff."

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia Preview

For those who were lucky enough to find a way to play Fire Emblem Gaiden, it soon became apparent what set it apart as the black sheep of the Fire Emblem family. Many new and odd mechanics were added to Gaiden that would either never be seen again, or slowly return as the series finally expanded for release overseas. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia faithfully brings many of these interesting mechanics back - but also tweaks them with new features that seems to avoid some of the pitfalls that Gaiden faced back on the Famicom.

Check out our pictures of the new Alm and Celica amiibo:

In the short demo I experienced, we were able to try out one regular battle map and part of a dungeon. While the battles and maps didn't offer much variety in terms of topography or objectives, both experiences highlighted some of the more interesting tactical choices Shadows of Valentia has to offer compared to other titles on the 3DS. Like Fire Emblem Awakening, you're able to traverse a world map between points of interest - enemies on the map will launch you into battles, while certain towns and other places will let you freely explore them from a different perspective.

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 3 Review in Progress - Single-Player

In this review in progress, I'm covering only Dawn of War 3's single-player campaign. The final review will include multiplayer and will follow close to launch on April 27.

The single-player campaign of the third Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War RTS is a bloody mess, in both the good and bad senses. The pendulum of the series' design ideas has swung back from Dawn of War 2's tactical RPG mechanics toward the larger armies and basic base-building of the first game, which is fine in concept. But the Dawn of War 3 campaign's scattered pace and complex mechanics, seemingly aimed at high-level competitive players, make it tough to dive into and get the hang of.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Review

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch is a souped-up version of the Wii U's Mario Kart 8. When I reviewed Mario Kart 8 almost three years ago, I thought it was an amazing game and awarded it a score of a 9.0. Here's what I said then:

"Mario Kart 8 is the best kart racing game Nintendo has made in a long time. It strikes a careful balance between refining old ideas while introducing fresh new ones. Admittedly, its gorgeous graphics and jazzy orchestrated soundtrack bolster its presentation, but you're getting a lot more than just looks with this one – although I spent an awful lot of time gawking at the details in slow-motion, the fast and furious pace of racing with friends both locally and online is what really kept me coming back."

Assassin's Creed Creator's New Game No Longer Episodic

The new indie project from Assassin's Creed Creator Patrice Désilets, Ancestors, will no longer be an episodic game.

At the Reboot Develop 2017 conference (as reported by Eurogamer), Désilets revealed new information about his upcoming title, Ancestors, which includes the expansion of the project to something more akin to an open world than originally expected.

"Exclusive: the episodic nature is gone," Désilets declared, adding "I'm not sure I was supposed to say that."

The creative director of Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed 2 went on to confirm that his new game will still be "a third-person action game set between 10 to two million years ago" as was first revealed two years ago, only "now I'm letting players tell their own stories."

Why Heroes of the Storm 2.0 is Bigger, Bolder and Better

"It's sort of a culmination of everything that has happened in the game since launch. We have reached the point where we feel like the game is different enough that calling it 2.0 makes sense." That's Heroes of the Storm Lead Game Designer Travis McGeathy talking about the recent 2.0 announcement, which represents a plethora of changes coming to the game later this month. Most significantly, the popular (don't call it a) MOBA will have its progression system overhauled, but it will now boast Loot Chests, an Overwatch-themed battleground and introduce numerous cosmetic items designed to cement the fact that you're playing a game that celebrates all things Blizzard.

The 2.0 moniker is also a branding opportunity, of course – a convenient shorthand to drive new interest in the game and reclaim lapsed players.  After all, Heroes of the Storm has seen many changes from the initial beta period until now. "There has actually been a couple of points over the past year where the community has called what we've done Heroes 2.0," Travis tells me. "It's a live game and we're constantly improving it over time. We launched with a ranked version, which many refer to as the second version of the game, but we weren't happy with it so we redid it. The progression update we're talking about here is very similar. The progression system that went out the door was fine for the time, but we've kind of grown beyond that." Timing, of course, is key and with the changes coming to the game, plus the introduction of new heroes from Diablo (Cassia, the Javazon from Diablo II) and Overwatch (ninja extraordinaire Genji), and new locations to battle in -- adding '2.0' feels right.
