Why Project Rap Rabbit is the Rhythm-Action Game I Want

A number of high profile game creators have turned to Kickstarter to try and fund new projects over the last few years, but as a huge fan of – what I'd guess you'd call - personality-driven rhythm-action games, the launch of the Project Rap Rabbit Kickstarter campaign a couple of weeks ago really jumped out at me.

This is a project, after all, from a veritable who's who in that sub-genre – Masaya Matsuura, the creator of PaRappa the Rapper, Um Jammer Lammy and Vib Ribbon, Keiichi Yano, the driving force behind Gitaroo man, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents, and Atsushi Saito, the man responsible for the incredible visual style – and initial premise – of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2's Delay Is a Good Thing

Last week, Rockstar Games announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 has been delayed, and people are mad about it.

Screen Shot 2017-05-30 at 10.55.12 AM

It was originally supposed to come out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Fall this year, but has been pushed to Spring 2018, with Rockstar stating, "some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans. We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready."

The Long Journey Home Review

According to one of my playthroughs of the roguelike The Long Journey Home, humanity's first meeting with an alien species took place between the crew of our first interstellar vessel and a squat little glukkt trader named Mendarch. Here it was: the chance of enlightenment and the promise of advances in science beyond our wildest dreams. There was a whole unspoken history in his calling our place the galaxy the "prohibited sector." And what were the fruits of that first mission? He offered to loan me 600 galactic credits and only told me that he expected 200 credits in interest after we finished the transaction. Aliens will be human, I guess.

That's the fun part of The Long Journey Home, and the glukkt are but one of a long list of races who approach your ship with intentions both malevolent and magnanimous. Unfortunately, I had to fight to enjoy these moments. There's a great premise at the heart of this adventure, but it gets smothered under the weight of frustrating and tedious minigames which require ridiculous feats of precision and patience and wear out their welcome long before you ever reach Earth – if indeed you do. I never quite made it all the way back home (though I came close a few times), because this is, after all, a game designed to be a tough and often unfair adventure through the stars, giving you stories to tell of your brave crew's sacrifices. It does that, but the story was always more about just scraping by until the end, with few climactic triumphs to keep the mood from getting too dire.

Diablo 3: Blizzard on Bringing Back the Necromancer

Yes, you can summon the hulking, horned creature seen in the opening cinematic of the Diablo 3: Rise of the Necromancer content pack. That Blood Golem is one of six variants you'll be able to summon, in addition to plenty of other undead beasts. But the Necromancer itself – both the male and female versions – is what Blizzard's Lead VFX Artist Julian Love is calling a very special character that they've gone to great lengths to do justice to.

In designing Diablo 3's sixth class, Love said in an interview that much of the inspiration for the incarnation comes from modernizing Diablo 2's Necromancer, but in a very specific way: "We really wanted to explore the feeling that you got in Diablo 2 of being a commander of the dead and leading an army. That influenced some of the outfits that they wear." So it's safe to assume that we can expect some military-style gear, which we get a hint of in the coat worn in the intro cinematic sketches (take look for yourself in the video below).

Tokyo 42 Review

When played strictly as a stealth game, Tokyo 42 is a total blast. As a killer for hire in the stylish, high-contrast high rise setting of future Tokyo, I delighted in silently slashing guards with my katana blade on my way to take out a mob boss in the top floor of a beautifully ornate temple or plant a series of explosives along a tangle of factory pipelines. Unfortunately, once my cover was blown and the shooting started, Tokyo 42 became a wildly inconsistent experience thanks to targeting controls that miss when they seem like they should hit and AI that hits when it seems like it should miss. And in a game where you can be killed with only one shot, you really need the controls to work for you rather than against you.

Why Nintendo Hasn't Made a New Advance Wars

While Nintendo has published four Fire Emblem games in the last five years, the drought for its other Advance Wars series continues. Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami admits he'd like to make a new Advance Wars, but he admits the development team would have to overcome a particular design challenge.

"Personally, I'd love to do Advance Wars," Yamagami told Eurogamer, "but since it's harder to create relationships between its characters compared to Fire Emblem, I don't have a clear idea of what kind of setting it could have."

Fire Emblem producer Masahiro Higuchi, who worked on the original Advance Wars, echoed Yamagami's sentiments: "The Advance Wars series is one that I personally have a lot of interest in," Higuchi said. "I hear some of the staff here saying that they want to make one too, so if we have a chance it's something I'd like to do!"

"I would like to make Bayonetta 3. We're talking within the company even now about what to do," says Inaba. "But because we're constantly talking about it, that actually makes it really hard to say.

"Of course, that's just something that you talk about when you're making a series – do you want to keep the same protagonist? There's plenty of precedent for changing protagonists, and so that is something we discuss – do we want to keep the same one, have a different one, add new ones…"

What's the Latest on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night?

One of my favourite events each year is BitSummit - an annual indie games festival in Kyoto. It's a great show, where up and coming devs mingle with industry icons, and where there's no shortage of great games to play.

Last year, Koji Igarashi – one of the godfathers of the Igavania/Metroidvania genre – was actually manning a booth, showing off the latest build of his Kickstarter success story Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. This year, the game wasn't there to play, but Igarashi himself was still in attendance. I caught up with him to get a broad sense for how development is progressing. After all, since BitSummit last year, Bloodstained has been delayed into 2018, the game has found a publisher and new technology has been implemented, along with new studios getting involved.

18 Sweet Games We Played at BitSummit in Japan

On the world stage, Tokyo Game Show is seen as Japan's premiere gaming expo, but for me personally, TGS has been a show of diminishing returns for many years. Nowadays, the event I get most excited about in Japan is BitSummit.

This two day event is not necessarily that dissimilar to the indie spaces at PAX, or other consumer shows, but it's nonetheless an awesome window into what's happening in the indie scene within Japan, and BitSummit itself still feels very much like a grass roots celebration of gaming: a space being shared by everyone, with tiny start-up studios rubbing shoulders with well-known, high profile industry figures.

8 Things Rime Doesn't Tell You

There's a lot of mysteries to solve in Rime - check out these helpful clues to get you started on your adventure.

Rime Review

On the surface, Rime is a gorgeous, melancholy adventure of a lone wanderer in the similar fashion as memorable games like Ico, Journey, or The Witness. But just under that layer of beautiful art, mysterious locations, and wonderful music, is a game with very few new ideas. Instead, almost all of its puzzles are shallow and ultimately uninteresting versions of things we've seen and done in other, better games.

Rime's basic premise is simple and familiar: you wake up on a magical island after a shipwreck, and have to solve a variety of environmental puzzles over the course of the six-hour adventure to piece together just what the heck happened. Your nameless adventurer character doesn't have a ton of personality beyond looking like a cross between Ico and the main character of Journey, but your guide through Rime is little magical fox who's just about the cutest critter ever. He doesn't do a whole lot, but he helpfully points you in the direction you should go in – which I found especially useful in knowing where not to go if I wanted to explore everything in an area before progressing.

Splatoon 2: Road to E3 2017

It's that time of year again: E3 2017 is just on the horizon. From June 10-15, we'll be covering the biggest games and hardware announcements of 2017 and beyond. We = saw a wonderfully cut campaign trailer for Splatoon 2 not that long ago, and it plays to the strengths of Splatoon's weird world beautifully. It kicks off with Marie, one member of the previously popular diva duette known as the Squid Sisters, on her own and *gasp* no one appears to remember her. We're not sure how much time has passed between the Splatoon games, but this narrative setup plays into the drama Nintendo is slowly building through it's Squid Sister stories. It tells the story of a rift that happens after Team Marie beat Team Callie in the final Splatfest event. Anyway, this trailer shows off some cool mechanics and it confirms that more weapons will be available in the campaign versus the previous Splatoon campaign.

Far Cry 5 Will Almost Certainly Be Divisive

Far Cry 5 is almost certainly going to get talked about by the mainstream news media. Whether that idea excites you, annoys you, or something else is up to you. But Far Cry is going places that no big-budget, AAA-level game has gone in recent times, if ever.

You play a sheriff's deputy caught up in a war between the US Marshal Service and Hope County's resident cult leader, Joseph – a man who believes he's been chosen to protect his followers from a government collapse he believes to be imminent – and his family: brothers Jacob and John and their half-sister, Faith. You won't be alone, of course. Joining you in the battle for Hope County's soul are potential allies like Pastor Jerome, whose church has come under fire by Joseph's group; Mary May, whose father was killed by the cult; and Nick Rye, a pilot and soon-to-be father who wants to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who both fought for the US.

Friday the 13th: The Game Review in Progress

As someone who was Jason Voorhees for Halloween in fifth or sixth grade (probably not a great idea today), I've definitely been looking forward to stepping back into the hockey mask in Friday the 13th: The Game. So it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that I've found taking on the persona of Jason and roaming around as an iconic invincible force of murder is the highlight of this asymmetrical multiplayer killing spree. Unfortunately, the large majority of your time is spent controlling the machete-fodder, who are much less fun.

Jason will be set loose on gamers tomorrow, but I've been running for my life on the PC version for a couple days now. Note that a big part of why we do reviews in progress for multiplayer games is to test out servers in a live environment before we finalize our score. Usually that's to test and see if a game performs as well after release as it did before, but in this case I'm hoping the servers stabilize in time for the official launch. Pre-release servers have been pretty shaky, and multiple matches have crashed due to server disconnects. We'll keep playing and hoping for the best, but at the moment that's one of the scariest things about this game.

Steel Division: Normandy '44 Review

Steel Division: Normandy '44 accomplishes one of the most difficult feats in strategy gaming: it's a historical wargame where the fun of the game and the accuracy of the history are intertwined, instead of at odds. Developer Eugen Systems has had success with real-time wargames before (with its cleverly titled Wargame series) but with Steel Division it's escalated both the production values and tactical complexity, with remarkable success.

Unlike the stereotypical World War 2 strategy sim, Steel Division isn't about pushing counters across a map and waiting for some dice rolls to turn out in your favor. It's a great-looking game, for one, with lush, detailed maps and units. Controlling it feels good too – any real-time strategy veteran should almost immediately feel at home with its interface. There is a significant learning curve in terms of how to play Steel Division well, but it's attractive and enjoyable enough to get started with that it's hard not to want to play more.

Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days Review

Absurd as it is, there's some entertainment to be had in the very concept of a top-down shooter based on the 1992 film that made Quentin Tarantino a famous director. But other than that novelty and some passable robbers-versus-cops gunplay, there's not much to get excited about in Big Star's simplistic adaptation, Reservoir Dogs: Bloody Days.

Bloody Days puts you in charge of the crew from the live action Reservoir Dogs… sort of. Likeness rights were obviously not secured along with the name, as Mr. White is really the only character that bears any resemblance to his silver screen counterpart, the late Harvey Keitel. Mr. Pink, originally portrayed by Steve Buscemi, is an angry-looking dude with blond hair and a big goatee, while Mr. Brown seems modeled not so much on Tarantino as an MMA fighter stunt double that had to look enough like him to be convincing at a distance. It's a little difficult not to be distracted by those discrepancies in a game that leans on such an iconic license.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Won't Be at E3 2017

Perception Review

Perception invokes the most basic human phobia - a fear of the dark - by placing you in the shoes of Cassie, a blind woman who navigates by means of echolocation. It gives her - and you - only momentary glimpses of her surroundings, forcing you piece together room layouts, landmarks, and threats in the mere seconds before the shadows rush back in. It's emblematic of Perception's problems, then, that my main emotion as I sat in the dark wasn't fear, but irritation.

The smart-sounding, high-concept set-up is ultimately its downfall, but along the way it bears some fruit. We're so accustomed to being shown exactly where we are and where to go in games that to be left in darkness is actually refreshing at first. In the opening moments, exploring the purportedly abandoned New England house Cassie finds herself in is unnerving, opaque, and unpredictable. Until 10 minutes in, when you realise that the next four hours will amount to a bland adventure game with a veneer of horror and an increasingly awkward central gimmick.

Ashes of Creation: An MMO That Lets You Be the Boss

Preview sessions for new MMORPGs are often fairly predictable. Advances in graphics and artificial intelligence may have been made since the last time you attended one, but you can be almost certain someone's going to beat a big monster senseless in a dungeon. And so, in fact, it went when creative director Steven Sharif and lead designer Jeffrey Bard showed me a hideous chap with face tendrils called the "spider demon" in their upcoming sandboxy MMO Ashes of Creation. Using a mage-like character, Sharif zapped and fried the creature a few times to show off the combat, which he describes as feeling similar to that of Guild Wars 2. Good stuff.

But wait! A twist! Bard showed me that I could become the spider demon myself if I so wished, or at least if I'd bought one of the "monster tokens" they plan on selling through Ashes of Creation's eventual cash shop. Nor would this be some mere cosmetic outfit for a few laughs in the local square, as you might get with a lootable toy in World of Warcraft. Within minutes, Bard was in the spider demon's form tearing through a medieval-styled village and clawing away at its buildings--buildings players would use. And thus those same players have a vested interest in stopping Bard-as-Spider-Demon, but naturally on the sparse preview build there was no one around to thwart him save Sharif, who ended up getting killed by Bard by accident. It's essentially players as world bosses, and it's one of the most interesting ideas I've seen out of the MMORPG genre since EverQuest Next effectively became EverQuest Never, even if the idea has its roots in other multiplayer games like Evolve.

Get Even: Horror-Shooter Delayed After Terror Attack

Bandai Namco has delayed the release of its horror-themed shooter, Get Even.

The delay follows Monday night's terrorist attack in Manchester, UK, pushing back the release by one month to June 23, 2017.

The publisher provided a statement on the company's official Twitter feed:

Get Even aims to fuse horror, shooter and adventure games in unpredictable ways - and its approach certainly intrigued us when we went hands-on with it earlier this year.

Street Fighter 2 Could Determine Capcom's Switch Support

Capcom will assess how much it will support the Nintendo Switch based on sales of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, according to its COO.

Speaking to Toyokeizei (and spotted by NeoGAF user Calm Mind), Haruhiro Tsujimoto explained the company's current policy towards Nintendo's new hardware:

"With Street Fighter 2 going on sale in May," he explained (per an IGN translator), "Capcom will monitor its performance with regard to supporting the Switch."

It's not clear whether Tsujimoto is implying that Capcom may withdraw entirely from creating Switch games if the game sees poor sales, if it will reassess games it already has planned behind the scenes, or if this a more positive feeling - that if Street Fighter 2 performs well, it may increase Switch game production.

Samsung TV Update Should Fix a Major Switch Problem

An issue on Samsung TVs that saw them automatically switching HDMI channel to a Nintendo Switch console in sleep mode should be fixed soon.

Samsung's latest TVs include a feature that has them automatically switch to what they perceive to be a newly-active HDMI input, but docked Switch consoles (among other devices) appear to trigger that feature even when notionally turned off.

Speaking to The Verge (via Polygon), a spokesperson said: "Samsung has been following the comments on our Community Thread and we will be issuing a Firmware update early this summer that will address this behavior and provide the level of convenience that was intended."

Kingdom Hearts Designer Offers His Take on the Joker

Like Nomura's interpretations of Batman and Catwoman, his Joker redesign is striking, eccentric, and certainly a unique take on the DC villain. As part of Square Enix's DC Universe Variant Play Arts Kai line, the figure will release sometime this fall. You can preorder the figure now on Amazon Japan.

Far Cry 5 Key Art, Characters Revealed

Ubisoft has revealed the first piece of Far Cry 5 art. After announcing the title of the game and showcasing a series of teasers that highlighted the game's setting of Hope County, Montana, Ubisoft took a slightly more sinister turn with this piece.

The art, very much a sendup on da Vinci's Last Supper, focuses on what we assume to be FC5's villains. Much like the ominous art where 3 showcased Vaas Montenegro and 4 highlighted Pagan Min, this group of folks are surrounded by weapons, religion, and a nice pup.

Ken Jeong on Justice League Action and COD

Actor, comedian and licensed physician, Ken Jeong seems to be tackling as many forms of media as possible, film, TV, animation and now video games. We recently talked to Dr. Jeong about his work on Justice League Action, the upcoming animated film Amusement Park, his recent work on Call of Duty, and why the film adaptation of the novel, Crazy Rich Asians is kind of like The Avengers.

IGN: What can you tell us about your new animated film, Amusement Park? Have you wrapped yet?

Ken Jeong: We're close. I've been working on that for the last two years. It's amazing. It's been so much fun because it's a very personal project project for him (director, and former Pixar animator, Dylan Brown), and what I love about that movie is that it lends itself to more drama. The part I'm involved in is the escapism that the protagonist goes through. Even though I'm comic relief in that one, I just love the script and the story.

PlayStation Store Now Has Steam-Like Curated Playlists

Sony has launched a new recommendation system on the PlayStation store.

Dubbed The Creators, (via Kotaku) the new feature is similar to Steam's curator recommendations in that it displays recommended games, only in this version the suggestions come from developers rather than influencers.

As of now, the lineup includes 17 prominent developers and studios such as the President of Sony's Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida and the Final Fantasy 15 team.

Many of the picks are obvious choices, such as games made by the person or team in question or just generally popular titles.  However, lots of the choices do appear genuine with Rocket League Developer, Psyonix expressing their love of obscure sports titles and Yoshida praising the amazing Sound Shapes.

New Pokemon Go Anti-Cheat System Makes Rare Pokemon Impossible to Find

Like any game, Pokemon Go has hackers, whether they're using bots or other ways to gain an advantage quickly. But Niantic is now cracking down harder on them.

According to Pokemon Go Hub, a server-side security measure was activated over the weekend which now means previously flagged accounts are no longer able to see rare Pokemon spawns in an area.

Anyone caught using third party trackers to catch Pokemon will now be unable to catch the very best.

An image shared on the Pokemon Go Dev Discord server shows two screenshots of the game at the same time and location from two accounts, one normal, and one flagged. The normal account can see a Geodude, Kabuto, and Venonat nearby, while the flagged account can only see the Geodude.

Endless Space 2 Review

I first realized Endless Space 2 would be a game I'd enjoy upon discovering that one of its main factions is a race of treants called the Unfallen. They approach the grand 4X strategy adventure of exploring, expanding, exploiting, and exterminating by spreading peace and harmony throughout the galaxy. It's essentially the March of the Ents on a galactic scale, complete with featherweight philosophical talk in quest popups about fire being a force that both creates and destroys. Other turn-based 4X games might leave establishing faction personality at that, but Endless Space 2 goes even deeper, setting the Unfallen apart from their competition by giving them their own expansion technique that relies on spreading vines from system to system and connecting the whole endeavor to a central heart. That's but a taste of what makes Endless Space 2 one of the most aesthetically appealing 4X games to come out during the recent revival.

The Strange History of the Uncharted Movie

Most fans of the Uncharted franchise are probably taking a "I'll believe it when I see it" approach to the long-gestating film adaptation. First announced way back in 2009, the Uncharted movie has been trapped in development hell ever since, frequently gaining and losing writers, directors and actors over the years.

Luckily, there's been some new progress on the Uncharted front. Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has been cast as Nathan Drake, with the film now billed as a prequel to the main Uncharted saga. It's good to see the movie gaining some traction again, but we're not going to get our hopes up just yet. Check out this breakdown of all the fits and stops the project has experienced over the years and you'll understand why we can't be optimistic just yet:
