EA Merges BioWare Montreal With Motive Studios

EA has officially confirmed it's merged BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios.

"The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we're driving collaboration between studios on key projects," EA told IGN in a statement. "With multiple major projects in development in Montreal, we are merging BioWare Montreal with Motive Studios. This is an ongoing process, but there are many exciting roles and opportunities for everyone on the team."

The merge comes after reports that the Mass Effect series was to be put on hold after the underwhelming release of BioWare Montreal's Mass Effect: Andromeda, and that the studio would instead be focusing on BioWare's other titles.

Overcooked: Special Edition Review

A well played round of Overcooked feels like dancing in a graceful ballet, except missing a step means your burger burns, the kitchen lights on fire, and a raccoon in a wheelchair plummets into a lake of lava. Actually, maybe it's nothing like a ballet (although this gives me an idea for a fantastic ballet). But working with your teammates as a well-oiled machine to produce food for an insatiable demon is as rewarding as it is challenging. Overcooked remains one of the most fun couch co-op games I've played in years, despite some port problems that keep the Special Edition on the Switch from standing as the definitive version.

The local co-op cook-em-up poses the herculean challenge of asking up to four people to work together for three full minutes at a time, performing relatively simple cooking-related actions to fill food orders. It's practically a two-button game: one to pick up things like ingredients, pans, or plates and the other to chop, cook, or wash them depending on the station you are standing in front of. But combine those simple controls with the stress of a ticking timer and cleverly designed levels made to mess with you at every possible turn and Overcooked becomes blissfully frantic.

Join Our PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Event on IGN

The real story behind a single game of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is difficult to tell. It's an experience filled with close calls, strategizing, and either long range duels or up close and personal battles to the death. From a solo perspective you gear up and then head into an encounter that'll get your blood pumping… unless you never find anyone and run from the blue most of the match, only to be sniped by someone you never see. It happens. That's part of what keeps players coming back. You never know what kind of encounter you're going to have heading into a match. I'd like to try and tell that story from the perspective of all 100 players in a single match, and a duo match, but I need your help.

Video Shows Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy Allegedly Running on Xbox One

A video of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy allegedly running with Xbox One button prompts replacing those of the PS4 has surfaced.

As reported by XboxAchievements, one of the remaster's UI artist shared a video of the remade Crash trilogy running with button UI for an Xbox One controller.

Whether the button prompts suggest the game is running on an Xbox One or PC, however, remains unclear. The UI in the video also still includes nods to the series' PlayStation roots, as the original PlayStation memory card is still used during save screens. Zisa has since taken down the original video.

20 Years of Diablo: An IGN Retrospective

"Growing up I remember playing Diablo and it being this incredible, amazing experience. One that I played with my brothers. We had so much fun together. And when Diablo II came out, it was mind-blowing. Playing through it felt like a discovery, and I lost an entire summer where I was constantly playing." That's Rob Foote, Lead Game Producer on the Diablo III team. He's been at Blizzard for the past 17 years, and the main reason he applied to for a job there, was Diablo.

For Diablo III Senior Game Designer Joe Shelly, another Blizzard veteran of over 10 years, the experience was similar. Diablo II arrived on the scene while he was at college, working as an intern for a tech company. He would spend evening after evening playing Diablo II, often heading into work tired from very little, or a complete lack of, sleep. "It was instrumental in determining that what I really wanted to do was work in games. And work at Blizzard."

Sega Genesis Flashback Review

Miniaturized versions of classic consoles with built-in game libraries made to work on modern TVs aren't a new idea, but Nintendo certainly caused quite a nostalgia-fueled fervor with last year's NES Classic and upcoming SNES Classic. The Sega Genesis and its library absolutely deserve their own similar monument to the 16-bit glory days of blast processing, but due to a poisoned, lackluster library, this Sega Genesis Flashback looks poor next to what we've seen of the SNES Classic.

Note that this $80 retro console isn't manufactured by Sega – it's made by At Games, which also produces the Atari Flashback. The Genesis Flashback boasts 85 built-in games, which is almost double the amount of the excellent Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection that was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in 2009. Upon closer inspection, however, you'll find that only 57 of them were actually released on an original Sega console. The remaining 28 are "bonus" games – all-but-unplayable ripoffs of classics like Space Invaders and air hockey. That means 28 games in this collection (33%) are straight garbage.

Metal Gear Solid 5 Gets Its First Update in a Year

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain just received its first update of the year, which brings a number of new features to the game's FOB missions, including a new playable character.

He can even ricochet bullets off of marked enemies.

In addition to Ocelot, this update includes two new swimsuits for your Diamond Dog army. These swimsuits, named the "Goblin Suit" and "Megalodon Suit" offer no camouflage, but increase your soldier's movement speed. Foxhole Is An RTS Where Every Unit Is a Real Player

Online multiplayer games often excel at capturing the intimate scenes of war: the frenzied firefights in claustrophobic ruins or the stealthy march of small squads through hostile territory. The wider business of ferrying supplies to and from the front lines largely remains the realm of strategy games, where players act not as individuals but godlike figures who command the wills of hundreds of soldiers with a drag of the mouse. Foxhole wants to change that. It's a sandbox multiplayer war on a grand scale, complete with fights for territory over sprawling maps that spread out for miles, but with a focus on the player as individual soldier.

Prior to its release on Early Access, lead artist Adam Garib showed me what to expect as he led me over the battlefields in the sidecar of his motorcycle, and I'm fascinated by the concept.

Blizzard has announced the first details about pro player salaries and benefits for the upcoming Overwatch League, revealing that each player will earn a minimum of $50,000 per year.

Teams will be required to sign players to a one-year contract, which can be extended to two-years if they choose. In addition to the minimum salary, teams must also provide their players with health insurance, a retirement savings plan, and housing and practice facilities during the season.

On top of that, at least 50 percent of bonuses earned from winning events must go directly to the players. The bonus pool for all events in season one is $3.5 million, with at least $1 million of that going to the championship team alone.

Back in Blazkowicz with Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

In the demo I played on the PC version, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus brings back the challenging, unadulterated shooter action of Wolfenstein: The New Order in a great-looking followup to Machine Games' reboot. To be clear there isn't a ton that's radically different about it mechanically: BJ still sneaks around knifing Nazis in the back before grabbing two guns and blowing the rest away. But the two levels I played each have some distinctive qualities that made them feel different from the "original" in subtle but important ways.

Like the first game, Wolfenstein 2 plays its story of resisting technologically advanced Nazis pretty straight, with strong performances from its cast. BJ and his now-pregnant girlfriend Anya, grizzled science genius Set, and the rest of the resistance fighters left standing at the end of The New Order all give convincing dramatic performances during the cinematics I saw. At the same time, The New Colossus is self-aware enough to know when it's being ridiculous – and fully embraces it.

Actor Lists Grand Theft Auto 6 On Resume

If a motion capture actor's resume is to be believed, Grand Theft Auto 6 is well into production. Spotted by NeoGAF user chadskin, actor Tim Neff has listed motion capture work for both Red Dead Redemption 2 and the very-much-unannounced Grand Theft Auto 6 on his resume: Motion capture work is typically completed some way into game production, which could imply a setting has been chosen. However, it may also be that stock moves were captured for convenience, alongside Neff's work for RDR2. Given the continued world-conquering success of GTA 5, it's a no-brainer that Rockstar would be working on a follow-up, but this is the first time we've seen possible evidence that production is in progress. Last year, rumours circulated that the inevitable sequel was in production. Back in 2013, since-departed Rockstar president Leslie Benzies said the company had "45 years worth of ideas we want to do" with GTA.

Sundered Review

Sundered has a great understanding of H.P. Lovecraft, which by all appearances is the main literary inspiration behind this semi-roguelike 2D platformer in the tradition of Metroid and Castlevania (or Metroidvania). In the 1930s the horror writer claimed atmosphere and mood were the great aims of his "weird fiction," and Sundered delivers both in bundles, weaving that evenly into the minimalist, Limbo-like music or the occasionally stunning hand-drawn set pieces that define this world. Smart sound cues impart tension before trouble arrives. Throughout it all a being speaks with the hero in a voice that sounds like Shakespeare spoken through cabbage with a sore throat, suggesting a Cthulhu-like presence but leaving its form to the imagination. Mood, in fact, is often strong enough here that it can prop up Sundered when it sags.

Goliath Explained: Who Is the Marvel Hero?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding in a big way thanks to next year's Ant-Man and the Wasp. Not only will this film finally put Evangeline Lilly's Hope Van Dyne in costume and introduce her long-lost mother, Janet (played by Michelle Pfeiffer), we'll also meet Dr. Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne) a brilliant lab assistant and future heir to the mantle of Giant-Man.

Whether you call him Giant-Man, Goliath or Black Goliath, Bill Foster isn't a character many causal Marvel fans may be aware of. With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about this new addition to the MCU.

Bill Foster is one of Marvel's first major African American heroes, though he was a brilliant scientist long before donning a costume and harnessing the power of Pym Particles. Foster began his comic book career as a lab assistant to Hank Pym and has worked everywhere from the CDC to Project Pegasus in his career.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a Darker, Tenser Uncharted

After about half an hour of playing Uncharted: The Lost Legacy at a preview event last week, it occurred to me that it's the first Uncharted game that doesn't feel like it's being propelled by a cast of characters who, through thick and thin, genuinely love each other. Instead, Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross feel like little more than colleagues, brought together in the pursuit of an item called The Tusk of Ganesh, but for entirely different reasons.

Finding the Tusk is Chloe's first independent treasure hunt, and it's supposedly one that's deeply personal, with ties to her family who, despite her appearances in Uncharted 2 and 3, we know very little about. Nadine is her gun-for-hire, and the game is set soon after she has lost her private military company, Shoreline, from Uncharted 4. Nadine wants money and perhaps a little redemption, while Chloe seems to want a reflective journey that ends with a prize. It's a tense time for the two of them, and the story seems have a much sharper focus on the individual characters than Uncharted's usual look at particular historical figures or artefacts.

Hey! Pikmin Review

Nintendo hasn't been shy about bringing many of its most beloved characters and game series to the 3DS, sometimes dramatically rethinking them to fit the limitations of the handheld system. This is the case with Hey! Pikmin, a spin-off of the fan-favorite Pikmin series that takes the army-amassing, tossing, and goodie-collecting real-time strategy gameplay of Pikmin and reworks it into a 2D puzzle platformer. While it does an admirable of transplanting the inherent charm and cuteness into a smaller package, Hey! Pikmin's lack of challenge and slow pace make it far less memorable than the real-time strategy games that came before.

In Hey! Pikmin, we find the always-adorable and misfortune-prone Captain Olimar once again in a heap of trouble on an unknown planet. His ship has crash-landed, and in order to repair it he'll need to collect virtual heaps of a MacGuffin substance called "Sparklium." Compounding that simple and cliched situation is that Olimar is nearly defenseless: all he has is a loud whistle and weak little jetpack that can only be used for a few seconds – he doesn't even have a weapon. Fortunately for him, this world is teeming with cute and colorful pikmin: helpful little plant-like beings which Olimar can gather, toss, and use for a variety of purposes like attacking enemies, bashing down barriers, protection from pitfalls, and even conducting electricity.

Destiny 2 Beta's Toughest Objective Had Been Fixed Before the Beta Came Out

The most difficult and frustrating mission from the Destiny 2 Beta was already caught and fixed for the release version of the game before the Beta was available.

This includes the already infamous section where players must find a way to "Overload the generator" near the end of the opening Homecoming mission. Destiny 2: Introducing the latest Crucible PVP mode 'Survival'

A finite number of lives, permanent death, and coordinated team tactics are the three core elements that make up Destiny 2's Survival mode. On the surface, adding a limit to the amount of lives that a team can use may seem like a simple tweak to the PVP formula, but it reinforces the competitive philosophy that's already been established with the addition of Countdown in the Crucible. This is the second of what will hopefully be a plethora of modes that require teams of players to be built before heading into a particular mode. It's exactly what we hope to see more of in Destiny 2's PVP offerings.

Survival turned out to be one of our favorite experiences during the trip to Bungie. While not as competitive as a Destiny 1 event like Trials of Osiris, Survival keeps the importance of staying alive while not making the player feel like they haven't contributed should they get killed once or twice by the opponent. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and we couldn't help but pull off one ear of our headsets so we could communicate effective strategies. It is, in our brief experience so far, a fantastic addition to the existing pool of PVP options that players already love.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy Has More Freedom Than Ever

A few minutes into my demo of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, I realized I was experiencing something I'd never felt before in an Uncharted game: total freedom. Even in dozens of hours exploring with Nathan Drake, Uncharted has never given me the sense that I can do whatever I want in any order, but in The Lost Legacy, that changes.

The section of the game I played – chapter four in The Lost Legacy's overall story – dropped me into an expansive area of Southern India's Western Ghats. As new protagonist Chloe Frazer, the world was my oyster, with the franchise's first completely non-linear experience and the largest single area ever in an Uncharted game.

While my ultimate goal to advance the story was clear (finding a few statues that match corresponding symbols on an artifact), the game never forced my hand. From exploring ruins to searching for treasure to just shooting down groups of enemies, there was never any pressure to do anything but wander. While Nadine Ross – Chloe's reluctant partner on the journey – would occasionally give me a hint that could lead to an objective, I was able to discover everything from actual story moments to hidden treasures at my own pace.

Nintendo's Tested Mario Kart Without the Blue Shell

Mario Kart 7 and 8 director, Kosuke Yabuki has revealed that Nintendo has tested the popular kart racer without the controversial Spiny (read: Blue) Shell item but concluded that the game didn't feel right without it.

When asked by Eurogamer about the frustrating nature of the nefarious Blue Shell - an item that almost always hits and hinders the racer in first place - and why it's included in the series, Yabuki spoke about the differences in what individuals will find fair.

"Something I personally really consider is the human emotion element of the play experience," Yabuki states "So for example playing Mario Kart - if you have something that feels unfair or makes you feel frustrated or makes you angry... Everyone is different in that respect. What you will feel is unfair might be different to someone else. As far as possible we want to avoid those feelings of frustration."

Blizzard Shuts Down New World of Warcraft Legacy Server 5 Hours After It Opens

After only five hours of activity, a new legacy server for World of Warcraft has been shut down by Blizzard.

VG24/7 reports that the creator of the Flemyst server, which launched last Friday, received an unexpected cease and desist letter from Blizzard's lawyers.

Flemyst was set to show players World of Warcraft as it stood during the release of 2007's Burning Crusade expansion.

This is not the first legacy server to be taken down by Blizzard, after the Nostalrius server was removed last year. However the core of Nostalrius was reused as part of the Elysium server, which remains active, and Blizzard did meet with the Nostalrius team to discuss a potential future for vanilla WoW.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's Chun-Li Being Reworked

The reaction to Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite's take on Chun-Li has been... loud. Loud enough, in fact, that Capcom is now in the process of changing her look to appease fans.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con (as reported by Gamespot), producer Yoshinori Ono said:

"The development team is hard at work finishing the game for the September 19 release date, and based off the feedback we heard, we are currently making improvements to Chun-Li as well as other Capcom characters. Since the work is still in progress, we don't have anything final to show you just yet, but stay tuned."

Pyre Review

Watching Pyre's emotionally gripping story unfold, precisely and enjoyably punctuated by exciting, tactical, real-time battles, is to witness just about everything I look for in a video game executed all but flawlessly. Developer Supergiant's latest is an experience on par with watching a world-class musician perform a difficult piece with equal parts talent and soul. And speaking of which, the music is superb.

The intricate but easy to follow story casts you as the Reader, an unseen character flung into the center of momentous events that are shaking the foundations of a finely crafted fantasy setting best described as some kind of beautiful cross between Dr. Seuss and H.P. Lovecraft. Like Bastion and Transistor, it's an imaginary world where the dark and the whimsical mingle like they've always belonged together, subverting familiar stereotypes and treating lore nerds to layers and layers of detailed, expertly penned history and legend to uncover.

Pokemon Go Fest Represented the Best and Worst of a Bumpy First Year

I'd only been at Pokemon Go Fest for five minutes the first time I heard someone shout that an ultra-rare Pokemon was nearby. With 20,000 of the most dedicated Pokemon Go fans from around the world in one spot, it wasn't surprising to see that people were passionate, and the friendly, cooperative spirit that started the day represented everything great about Pokemon Go and its community.

As players ran past me, I joined them, running toward a 10-foot tall physical PokeStop and excited for my first chance to catch an Unown, one of the rarest Pokemon in the game. People were laughing, the weather was great, and everyone had a smile on their face. As I got closer to where the crowd was gathered, I saw Unown pop up on the in-game map. Pokemon Go Fest was already a blast, I thought to myself.

Dying Light to Receive 10 Free DLC Drops in the Next Year

All the DLC will be free across all platforms, and will include new enemies, new events, new mysteries, "and more."

A new enemy content drop will be coming soon, "as a tiny taste" of what's to come.

Dying Light released in early 2015, but the developer says the game still has 500,000 average weekly players. Techland previously said it would be supporting the game until the end of 2016, but that has clearly been extended even further.

Thanks to Marvel's SDCC announcements, we know a lot more about 2019's Captain Marvel movie, including that it's set in the '90s and features a two-eyed Nick Fury. Destiny, Halo Writer Joins Crackdown 3

Former Destiny and Halo writer, Jon Goff, is helping pen Microsoft's long-awaited Crackdown 3.

"With Crackdown, I wouldn't say it's like working on comics and games like Destiny and stuff I've done with Halo, because I've done a lot of

with heroes and building the world through the hero's eyes," Goff said.

"The fun thing we're getting to do with Crackdown here, though we still have the hero and the agents … I'm getting to spend a lot of time with the villains. We're building this cadre of villains that are enemies you love to hate."

Metroid: Samus Returns Could Be the Metroid: Zero Mission Follow-Up I've Always Wanted

Metroid: Zero Mission introduced me to sidescrolling Metroid games, and while that form of Samus Aran's adventures has remained as frozen as a Chozo statue ever since, I've long wanted to see the franchise's older iteration be given the same treatment. Zero Mission remains one of my favorite platforming experiences more than a decade later, having made something old feel fresh and as vital as when it first debuted.

Thankfully, playing through the demo of Metroid: Samus Returns, which IGN first went hands-on with at E3, has me hopeful it could be the Zero Mission sequel I've wanted all this time. Though I'm wary some changes could rob the full experience of the franchise's magic, many of the additions felt like smart ways of modernizing the original game without completely altering the adventure players remember.
