Fortnite's Hourly New Year's Eve In-Game Event Now Live

Epic is celebrating a successful year of Fortnite with an in-game New Year's Eve event occurring every hour.

When the clock hits a new hour, all players in a Fortnite match will see a giant disco ball rip through a rift in the sky. A countdown starts while music begins to play.

Fortnite - New Year's Eve Event Fireworks overlooking Dusty Divot and Salty Springs.

When the countdown reaches zero, a barrage of fireworks are released and every player is forced to boogie down for 10 seconds, no matter if you were in the middle of a fight or just minding your own business. The event concludes with a giant firework of a llama with a promising "2019" underneath.

Atlus Teases Persona 5 R, Other New Projects

Atlus has officially teased Persona 5 R, which many believe to be an enhanced release of Persona 5.

Revealed through a brief video, the words "Persona 5 R" are never shown, though an official website by the name P5R.jp has been attached to the video, suggesting the upcoming title will include this new letter. The teaser showcases Tokyo's Shibuya district, a major location in P5, with screens displaying the P5 icon, followed by the message "New Projects" and "2019.3."

The description of the video claims the next information on this title will be coming in March 2019. It's unclear if the "New Projects" referenced in the trailer solely includes P5R or also involves unannounced spinoff games, like a possible Persona 5 fighting game similar to Persona 4 Arena.

Inside One of the Best Arcades in Japan - Game Center Mikado

Arcades may have died out in much of the world, but in Japan, arcades are still a huge part of gaming culture. One of my favourites is Game Center Mikado in Tokyo – it's a great place to dive into legendary fighting games and retro classics in a relaxed atmosphere.

Mikado is a couple of stops from Shinjuku in Takadanobaba, a district that's famous for being the place that Osamu Tezuka chose for his iconic character Astro Boy to be "born." Last Year: The Nightmare Review

The title of Last Year: The Nightmare may be short on inspiration, but its take on asymmetric survival horror multiplayer has plenty. Those who have played Friday the 13th or Dead by Daylight will be familiar with the premise of one powerful player hunting down several weak ones as they try to escape, but Last Year: The Nightmare introduces a couple new twists that make it among the best of this burgeoning sub-genre thus far. Whether you play as the killer or one of the hapless teenagers, its action is tense and strategic to the end. That said, with only three maps, no progression system, and intermittent glitches, it does have an air of early access to it at the start of its 90-day exclusive period on the Discord Store.

NBA 2K's Mike Wang Says Tech Has Made NBA Players More Unique

Mike Wang has been embedded in the world of sports video games longer than some of its fans have been alive. As the gameplay director for NBA 2K, as well as a brief stint on EA's NBA Live series, Wang is the perfect person to tell us just how far we've come on this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered.

Most notably, Wang points out how the evolution of technology in sports games does more than just make LeBron's face look more realistic, or makes more beads of sweat appear on Steph Curry's brow. It's also allowed developers to increasingly mimic the exact motions that individual players make while playing ball, lending an extra level of personality to each moment.

Batman's Psyche Is Perfectly Mirrored in the Gotham of Arkham Knight

Stories do not happen in a vacuum. A story's setting can be as much of a character as the actual characters inhabiting it, reflecting both them and the thematic elements of the plot. This is true of games, books, and movies—in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, for instance, a great and mighty evil renders the land of Mordor into, quite literally, a festering, pulsating, and decaying wasteland that is inhabited by orcs and other beings who personify the very evil that corrupts the once bucolic realm of Mordor.

There's perhaps no better representation of this than Batman: Arkham Knight. The character, layout, and visual starkness of Gotham City act as a malleable mirror to Batman's psyche within the Arkham-verse. The story sunk its bat-fangs into me but Gotham, the city itself, is what truly stands out as both the home and the harbinger of the dichotomy of good/evil that brings the city to grimy, pulsating life.

NBA 2K's Mike Wang 'Immediately Regretted' Jumping Ship to EA

In the world of video games, especially with massive companies like 2K Sports and EA, it's incredibly rare to hear a developer admit they "immediately regretted" jumping from one company to the next. That's just what happened on this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered, where editor Ryan McCaffrey spoke with NBA 2K gameplay director Mike Wang.

Wang accepted a position at NBA 2K developer Visual Concepts just as NBA 2K6 was wrapping up development. Wang stayed on through NBA 2K7 and 2K8 before making the decision to jump ship to 2K Sports' biggest rival, EA's NBA Live, which was trailing behind 2K in critical reception at the time. It wasn't simply a matter of money, though. Wang's reasoning was practically Machiavellian.

Insurgency: Sandstorm Review

Insurgency: Sandstorm is an excellent multiplayer shooter that successfully avoids the common pitfalls of military simulation, but still manages to deliver an immersive, at times disturbing, sense of realism to its modern, Middle Eastern setting. Its arsenal consists of some of the best-realized firearms in any video game to date thanks to stellar sound design, punchy animations, and obsessive attention to detail. Elsewhere, though, things aren't quite as glamorous: I found most of its maps to fall into the "just okay" category due in part to poorly defined restricted areas that, on top of being annoying to encounter, are easily exploited. Still, Insurgency: Sandstorm punches well above its weight, offering phenomenal gunplay that shows up much of its big-budget competition.

Fans Are Debating Whether GoT and Skyrim's Dragons Are Actually Wyverns

If the Internet is to be believed, Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons might have some serious soul-searching to do about that last title in particular. A great dragon debate has waged on among fans over Christmas, who finally determined that the so-called "dragons" in Game of Thrones are actually -- and more accurately -- wyverns.

Let's examine the evidence.

This debate over the accurate term for the winged beasts in Game of Thrones (and Skyrim) stems from the distinction that a dragon is technically a creature with four legs and two wings, while a wyvern has two legs and two wings, and uses its wings as additional legs. This post from Redditor 4h0y1m4p1r4t3 has over two thousand responses of people both debating the different names of various types of dragon-like creatures, or alternately having their minds blown that the "dragons" in Game of Thrones and Skyrim aren't actually dragons.

How Historically Accurate is Red Dead Redemption 2?

Watch its unimaginably long  credit roll and you'll spot a number of researchers whose roles were dedicated to making sure Red Dead Redemption 2 reflected a historical reality. Outside of the simulation genre, video games tends to play very fast and loose with history, but Rockstar Games has goes above and beyond in every effort to make the world seem deeply believable while functioning within the parameters of an open world entertainment experience. This dedication realism exercised by Rockstar is commendable, but the team also clearly understood that pure, unadulterated retellings of real-world events and frontier life also wouldn't perfectly serve their creative purposes.

16 Mortal Kombat 11 Guest Characters We Want As DLC

While the Mortal Kombat series has never been shy about taking inspiration from popular culture, the last two NetherRealm games have really gone out of their way to include characters from other universes as DLC.

Mortal Kombat X's DLC included a handful of horror icons like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, The Predator, and a Xenomorph alien who all fit right in performing gruesome fatalities.

Meanwhile, Injustice 2 had the denizens of the DC Universe squaring off some iconic characters from other comic publishers, Hellboy and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Hell, even Kratos popped up in the 2011 Mortal Kombat. It's entirely possible some of them will return, but who else?

Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4) - Silver Lining DLC Review

Insomniac saved the best for last: Spider-Man: Silver Lining is what I wanted the first two chapters of The City That Never Sleeps DLC to be. Great character work across the board is not only fun in the moment but raises intriguing, farther-reaching implications for the story. And with diverse missions and a clear sense of resolution, this is just a much more satisfying day in the very dangerous life of Spider-Man.

Silver Lining's story will only run you about an hour and a half at most, but its missions are some of the most varied of the three DLCs thus far, and all were a joy to play. Silver Sable's return is a treat. I found her to be a bit forgettable in the main campaign, but with her dual desires to retrieve her gear from Hammerhead and work toward helping her home country, Insomniac has done a nice job of adding depth to her. Voice actor Nichole Elise's strong performance proves less is more, as Sable can often say as much with an outreached hand as Spider-Man can in several puns – which she, amusingly, has very little patience for. The interplay between the two is a highlight of not just Silver Lining but of the entire City That Never Sleeps DLC trilogy.

Forza Horizon 4: Fortune Island Review

Forza Horizon 4's first expansion may lack the unbridled madness of the previous game's Hot Wheels expansion, and it's not as immediately divergent as Blizzard Mountain was (which brought winter conditions and snow for the first time), but Forza Horizon 4: Fortune Island is a great add-on that features some of the most brilliant and fun stretches of road in the series to date.

Set on a fictional, high-latitude island far off the coast of Britain, Fortune Island is more of a driving purist's playground than Forza Horizon 3's more experimental DLC. The star attraction is the Needle Climb, a several-mile stretch of sealed switchbacks that winds up Fortune Island's highest peak. The Forza Horizon series has been begging for a ribbon of road like this since the beginning, and the Needle Climb doesn't disappoint.

Red Dead Online Review in Progress - Week 3

Since the last instalment of IGN's Red Dead Online review in progress Rockstar has confirmed that new anti-griefing measures are in the works, and has also teased "new features, modes, and additional Red Dead Online gameplay content updates" that it will share in the new year. The prospect of measures that may dissuade pointless griefing – or at least punish it appropriately – is very welcome.

I'm genuinely confused by the sentiment that the bedlam that sometimes occurs in free roam in the Red Dead Online beta is something that players should just put up with (or, worse, that it's in some way totally faithful to the era). Certainly the American West earned its "Wild" moniker thanks to its untamed nature during the frontier era. However, if the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral had happened four times a day, every day, we wouldn't remember the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (and every Western you ever watched would just be a 90-minute battle royale). Players who want to be left alone aren't being precious; if they're anything like me they just want to be able to immerse themselves in a believable world. There's just nothing especially authentic about towns becoming war zones multiple times a day. I'll be pleased with anything Rockstar can concoct to foster a free roam multiplayer environment that's always fun to hang out in.

Ring of Elysium Early Access Review

Now that battle royale games have become legion, the new arms race is to find clever ways for a new game to set itself apart from the Fortnites and PUBGs of the world. In Tencent's winter-themed Ring of Elysium, which recently launched as a surprisingly polished early access game with cosmetic-only microtransactions, there's more than a little inspiration taken from those two behemoths, but its wintery theme, clever new ideas around movement, and exciting final moments make it feel distinct.

Here, a smaller-than-average group of 60 players (either alone, in pairs, or in groups of up to four) battle it out to escape a deadly blizzard that ravages remote mountain towns. But unlike the usual trudging around on foot or the occasional vehicle, Ring mixes up the way you get from point A to point B with a map that features not only ski lifts, but also gives you access to snowboards, hang gliders, and mountain-climbing gear. That change injects exciting creativity into the genre without going into off-the-wall fantasy.

Borderlands 2 VR Review

At face value, Borderlands 2 doesn't sound like the kind of game that would translate to VR with success – but it only took a few hours with Borderlands 2 VR to prove my preconceived notions wrong. While it's clearly not a ground-up, made-for-VR version of the shoot-and-loot bonanza, it's yet another reminder that large, traditional console/PC games can work reasonably well when retrofitted for virtual reality. Certain concessions, namely the lack of co-op, make Borderlands 2 VR a significantly easier, lonelier, and less replayable game than the original version, but Pandora has never been this close to your fingertips.

After spending 20 hours inside Pandora from a closer vantage point, it's clear that Borderlands 2 has aged well. Borderlands 2 VR ports over the entire, massive map from the base game (though, notably, it's strictly only the base game). The illustrative art style, in particular, works in its favor, and it probably doesn't hurt that Pandora is mostly a sparse wasteland. Unlike some other ambitious PSVR games, the world and characters don't have that slightly washed-out look. Everything looks about the same as it did in the PS3/Xbox360 original. It didn't blow me away like Wipeout and Moss did, but it's perhaps unreasonable to expect a VR port to look and feel as if it was designed with VR in mind.

The Games and Game Services With the Most Downtime in 2018

Whenever PSN, Xbox Live or any other major online game or service goes down, these become some of the most heavily searched topics on IGN. So, we wanted to see how various services, platforms and individual games fared throughout 2018 when it came to staying online. To do so, we asked Downdetector, a website that collects data on online service outages, who experienced the most downtime in 2018.

To determine which games and services go down and for how long, Downdetector "collects status reports from a series of sources. Through a realtime analysis of this data, our system is able to automatically determine outages and service interruptions at a very early stage." Downtime analyzes reports from sources like Twitter, and detects outages when the number of reports jumps above a relative baseline level.

Fans React Positively to The Division 2 Alpha

Ubisoft's The Division 2 held a technical alpha test for the PC over the last week, and many of those who had the chance to play it came away with positive impressions.

The alpha, which was announced last week, took place between December 15-18, and those who had the chance to play it signed a non-disclosure agreement, strictly limiting what they could or could not publicly say about the game. While many leaks arose during this time, Ubisoft has removed much of this as quickly as possible. However, some details and impressions have remained, and they're largely positive on this post-apocalyptic sequel.

Below Review

I love the feeling I get when exploring a new level of Below's gloomy, foreboding dungeon for the first time. From the enemies to the environment art to the sound design, everything falls into place perfectly to create a spooky atmosphere of unveiling the unknown, never quite knowing what might lie down the next flight of stairs. Then I step on a cheap instakill spike trap, have to start over without my stuff, and likely need to spend the next 30 minutes farming lantern fuel and bat meat so I can take another crack at it. Talk about killing the mood.

Almost all of my biggest frustrations with Below come back to it not seeming able to decide if it wants to be a moody, deliberate dungeon crawler with satisfying combat or a punishing survival-action game that never lets you relax. It's at its best when it keeps that first goal in mind, wowing me with cool, subterranean vistas and enticing me with hard-to-find secret rooms full of useful rewards.

31 Crazy (or Not so Crazy) Characters We Want as Smash DLC

The list we've assembled builds on IGN's initial wishlist of characters we wanted to see in Smash, but this time around, we're looking further into Nintendo's history to pick fighters that would bring something unique to Smash, whether it be their fighting style or the character's personality. Some characters listed to break the standard rule of a fighter originating from video games, but we have reason to believe that they could just possibly come to Smash despite that. Maybe.

Xbox in 2018: The Year in Review

The year of Xbox in 2018 has been almost Jekyll-and-Hyde-ian. Software-wise, the lack of high-quality first-party exclusives continues to be the story. But hardware and services were unrivaled, and Microsoft tripled their first-party studio portfolio.

On 2018's final episode of Unlocked, our Xbox crew talks about Microsoft's interesting year. Watch the video above to see them break down the highs and lows of Xbox's 2018.

Xbox's Exclusive Games

Xbox had the sublime Forza Horizon 4, an IGN Game of the Year nominee. Somehow, Forza Horizon 4 improved an already brilliant series, bringing changing seasons along for the ride – and doing so successfully. Visually it (again somehow) evolved again, especially if you played it on an Xbox One X. Aside from that, though (and that didn't release until October), it was an underwhelming year. Sea of Thieves released in a skeletal form in March, offering a genuinely enthralling core concept that, at launch, didn't have much meat on its bones. It has, to its credit, already received several substantial content updates. Meanwhile, State of Decay 2 dropped in May, evolving the original's unique brand of role-playing zombie-apocalypse survival, but unfortunately retaining the first game's reputation of being a shoddy technical experience.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Beats Black Ops 4 in November Sales

The November 2018 NPD report is in, and Red Dead Redemption 2 has come out on top.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was the month's second best-selling game in the United States, swapping places with Red Dead Redemption 2 from last month. It also remains the best-selling game of the year, meaning its overall sales remain higher than Red Dead Redemption 2's. Exact sales numbers aren't disclosed in the NPD report, so how big the gap is remains unknown. Black Ops 4 did, however, release two weeks ahead of its closest competition.

The report did reveal that Red Dead Redemption 2 has already exceeded its predecessor's sales by nearly 40 percent. We know the original sold over 14 million copies by 2015, meaning its sequel has likely surpassed 20 million units.

Next Generation Xbox Is Reportedly Codenamed Anaconda

The next generation family of Xbox consoles reportedly have two codenames: Anaconda and Lockhart.

As reported by Windows Central, the two separate Xbox SKUs will theoretically act like the current Xbox One S and Xbox One X do now: Lockhart is rumored to be a more affordable, baseline model that makes the technology accessible to a larger group of consumers while Anaconda is a beefed up version that will cost more for fans willing to shell out the money for more power. Both are expected to be released by holiday 2020.

While the report suggests Lockhart could be comparable to (or a bit more powerful than) the current power of the Xbox One X, Anaconda would be much more powerful, providing a "cutting-edge console gaming experience." Rumors also indicate that Microsoft is "exploring technology to dramatically reduce loading times," possibly including a faster SSD hard drive. It could also potentially act as a dev kit.

Two New Shadowverse Cards - Revealed!

The next Shadowverse expansion – Altersphere – will be upon us soon, and it's one of my favourite themes yet. The set-up – as you can see in the trailer below – is that a being from another dimension is invading the world and twisting familiar characters into unfamiliar forms.

It's a neat idea, and Cygames is clearly having fun bringing back fan favourite legendary characters in entirely new forms - and with different class alignments. Take Demonlord Eachtar, the incredibly strong Shadowcraft legendary from Tempest of the Gods. He's returned as Holylord Eachtar, a Havencraft legendary minion. He still has the same play point cost and stat line, and still gives allied followers +2/+0 and Rush. He even still uses shadows (i.e. allied followers that have died) but instead of summoning zombies, summons Holy Cavaliers.

11 Big Games That Got Delayed in 2018

But nevertheless, it's good to keep tabs on the titles you're interested in so that you can budget your time and money accordingly. These are 11 of the biggest games that got delayed in 2018.

New Release Date: January 25, 2019

Once The Last Guardian finally released in December 2016, Kingdom Hearts 3 inherited the mantle of the biggest game to be delayed the longest. Kingdom Hearts 3 Trailer Confirms Second Playable Character

Since Tetsuya Nomura hinted about the possibility years ago, fans have speculated about whether Kingdom Hearts 3 will have another playable character beyond Sora. Now, the sequel's latest trailer has confirmed that is the case, and who this second character is.

Spoilers for Kingdom Hearts 3 follow! Turn back if you haven't watched the latest trailer for the game and don't want to know.

During the Kingdom Hearts 3 Final Battle trailer, viewable above, gameplay of Riku as a player-controlled character is shown (around the 1:06 mark).

This isn't the first time Sora's childhood friend has been playable in the series — notably, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, originally released for the GBA and then remade for the PS2, included a storyline featuring a playable Riku.

Battlefield 5 Undoes Time to Kill Changes Following Fan Feedback

DICE has announced that the changes made to Battlefield 5's Time to Kill (TTK) values will soon be undone following negative fan feedback.

Announced by DICE on the Battlefield 5 Reddit, TTK will be reverting back to launch values starting tomorrow, December 18 at 4am PT. DICE made the changes so it would be easier for new players to jump in to BF5, though experienced players quickly made their grievances known.

On Friday, DICE announced "Core" playlists were coming alongside changes to how long it took to kill other players in the game. However, with TTK values being reverted, the "Conquest Core" playlist will be removed, and future core playlists that were planned will not be introduced.

Marvel's Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4 is getting its own Marvel Comic, due out March 2019.

Marvel's Spider-Man: City at War #1 looks to follow the plot of the game, taking place eight years after Spider-Man gains his powers. Street Fighter 5 Adds New Fighter: Kage

Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition is getting a new character in the form of Kage, a dark force tied to the sinister aspects of Ryu's soul.

Announced by Capcom, Kage is Ryu's Satsui no Hado ("surge of murderous intent") and only desires to survive, destroy and conquer. For reference, Akuma gave into his Satsui no Hado, though Ryu is constantly struggling to keep his at bay. If Ryu had kept his Satsui within him, he would have turned into Evil Ryu. However, this one became sentient and became Kage ("shadow") and lives to prove that Ryu is nothing without him. To do so, it seeks to challenge Akuma and Sagat, two of Ryu's greatest rivals.

Borderlands 2 VR Review - Retracted

It's never our intention to mislead our readers and viewers or misrepresent any developer's work. Unfortunately, this review was not careful enough in verifying assumptions about Borderlands 2 VR's movement and comfort options. Because we definitely don't want reviews based on incorrect information, we've removed it.

We've started over with a different reviewer and hope to have a new, factually accurate review up before the end of the coming week. We apologize for the error, and thank you for bearing with us.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Has Reportedly Leaked Online, Beware of Spoilers

It appears that copies of Kingdom Hearts 3 are out in the wild, and some who have gotten their hands on them have reportedly begun leaking parts of the game online.

Reported by Eurogamer, various videos and images of the leak have made their way online, including the title screen, gameplay and more. An individual was allegedly selling copies of the game on the Facebook marketplace (a listing which has since been removed), and many fans are wary of encountering spoilers for a sequel they have been waiting 13 years to play.

Borderlands 2 VR Review

When we dream of replaying our favorite traditional games in virtual reality, what are we really envisioning? In the case of Borderlands 2, the beloved looter-shooter from Gearbox, you might imagine looting and shooting with newfound immediacy, flinging yourself headlong back into the vibrant world of Pandora to delight in its distinctive hand-drawn environments first-hand. What you are probably not picturing is an awkward, unwieldy, often defective-seeming port, which reimagines the nimble action classic as a sluggish and clumsy slog for the PSVR.

So much of what made Borderlands 2 great has been stripped out of its VR version that it feels as if it's been ransacked by Vault Hunters. The most conspicuous absence — and one that changes the experience in a fundamental way — is cooperative play. Borderlands 2 does work in single-player but it was always intended to be enjoyed with up to three friends, yoked together in frantic bouts of madcap chaos. Racing to snag coveted loot before it's whisked away from under you is an essential component of its popularity, and for many people accustomed to its whirlwind pace, Borderlands VR is bound to seem lonely. It's the kind of feature whose omission is frankly unforgivable.

Interestingly, the series contains such a wide range of games that it's one of the few that's earned almost every score in the book, except the very highest and lowest available.

Which MK games stand out to you as the best and worst?

Dan Stapleton is IGN's Reviews Editor. You can follow him on Twitter to hear gaming rants and lots of random old-school Simpsons references.
