Fortnite: Rocket Launch Leave More Questions Than Answers

Overwatch’s New Hero Is a Ton of Fun but Extremely Weird
When Overwatch's 28th hero was revealed to be a hamster in a spherical, robotic killing machine, some people genuinely thought it was a joke. But this fuzzy-faced friend is very real, and after spending some time trying him out on the PTR, may stand as one of my favorite Overwatch heroes to date.
His ability to roll around the map and then shoot out a grappling hook to start swinging through the air feels completely unique within Overwatch's roster. It's wildly different from the Pharah's flying, D.Va's jets, and even Widowmaker's own hook despite the visual similarities. Frankly, it's hard to think of any FPS character that feels quite like the adorable Hammond the hamster.

Call of Duty: WW2 - United Front DLC Review
All in all, Call of Duty: WW2's United Front DLC feels experimental and exciting in some ways, while safer and dull in others. The changes to the Zombies mode dramatically shake up the formula and make it a high point worth visiting, but otherwise, the mostly underwhelming new maps aren't breaking any new ground.
When I first played Call of Duty: WW2 at release, it felt like a bizarre omission to not visit Stalingrad as a multiplayer destination. Over the years I feel like I've fought battles on that field countless times, because as the largest conflict to take place in all of WW2, it's always been a staple for shooters based on the war. United Front finally brings it back, and it's the best of the three new maps.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Doubles Down on Puzzles and Exploration
Of the nearly 150 hours I have in Rise of the Tomb Raider, I spent plenty of them jumping off ledges, investigating corners, staring up at empty ceilings, and trying to get just the right angle to peek into a crack in a room to find the next obscurely hidden collectible. Exploration and all the challenges area that came with it were a great post-game activity in Rise of the Tomb Raider – that is, until exploration eventually became tedious and I realized how bloated Rise was with collectibles and other extra tasks. Shadow of the Tomb Raider touts a bigger and more immersive setting, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider's narrative director, Jason Dozois, and level design director, Arne Oehme, assured me that a focus on building out the game's fictional culture will help keep exploration interesting.

Judge Cuts ZeniMax's $500 Million Court Winnings From Facebook in Half
After a Texas jury awarded ZeniMax $500 million in its suit against Oculus last year, U.S. District Judge Ed Kinkeade has reduced that payout to $250 million.
As reported by Bloomberg, Kinkeade's decision to retain a $250 million payout includes $200 million for breach of contract and an additional $50 million for copyright infringement. The $250 million that he is removing from the payout includes damages against Oculus co-founders Brendan Iribe and Palmer Luckey.
Additionally, Kinkeade rejected ZeniMax's request to ban the sale of Oculus headsets. At last year's hearing, a ZeniMax lawyer argued "a permanent injunction is the only way to stop" Oculus continuing to infringe upon copyrights. Oculus argued a proposed sales ban would place unfair hardship on the VR company - Kinkeade ultimately sided with Oculus on this front.

Forza Horizon 4: IGN's Real-Life Horizon Road Trip
The Forza Horizon series has been taking us around the globe since 2012. Colorado. Southern Europe. Australia. Now we're going to Britain.
What do I think of when I think of Britain? Mary Poppins. Michael Caine. Moles?
I dunno; maybe that's a little unfair. I mean, Australia and Britain aren't really that different, culturally speaking. Yeah, we love fish and chips too, and we also drive on the left, and we have the same old lady on the back of our money. Sure, there are dissimilarities in the temperature we serve our beer and the amount of venom packed into our spiders, but the differences aren't really as stark as I think we all like to pretend they are.
Geographically, though? That's a different story. However, while I've been to Britain to visit developers a bunch of times over the past 15 years I still really haven't seen that much of it in person. The places I've experienced are airports, motorways, and the inside of a few pubs. I've never really seen the Britain between all that.

Pillars of Eternity Director Would Rather Have the Constraints of Crowdfunding
For years, Obsidian Entertainment had long been one of the video game industry's unluckiest studios. Between Sega canceling their role-playing game based on the Aliens franchise, Microsoft canceling the lofty "million-man raids" of Stormlands, or THQ folding shortly after acquiring the publishing rights for South Park: The Stick of Truth, publishers just weren't looking like a good idea for the struggling team. Instead, Obsidian began to look towards the success of the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter (which later became Broken Age), seeing it as a way for the team to make their pitch directly to fans of the studio's work. In this month's IGN Unfiltered, Pillars of Eternity director Josh Sawyer elaborates on how the change in the landscape of game publishing has impacted the studio, and how he prefers both the freedoms and limitations of crowdfunding.

The Crew 2 Review
In a lot of ways, The Crew 2 feels more like a reboot of the first game than it does a simple sequel. The dramatic shift in tone is perhaps the key reason for this, though the fact that it's taken a second swing at recreating the entire continental USA for the setting is another. I welcome the lighter approach to the campaign mode and the fun mix of new vehicle types and racing disciplines here, but it's still a little rough around the edges and missing some surprising features.
A large amount of content has been added to this open-world race 'em up; most notably, aircraft and boats, plus whole suites of events for each. A lot has been made of The Crew 2's 'Fast Fav' system, which allows us to magically change between vehicles on the fly. It admittedly works really well and I can't imagine playing without it. The novelty of flying miles above the Earth, turning into a boat and spearing into the ocean does wear off, but there's no denying it's tremendously conducive to moving around the world, exploring, and creating ridiculous emergent gameplay moments.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - Donkey Kong Adventure Review
Donkey Kong Adventure is a full-fledged new world for Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle that puts an ape-flavored twist on its bouncy and colorful turn-based tactical gameplay. It gives up some flexibility to focus its levels so heavily on Donkey Kong's new powers, but in doing so it makes its battles more interesting than just more of the same.
I'm not going to try to explain the absurdist story that brings Beep-O and Rabbid Peach to Donkey Kong's world to battle a beefed-up Rabbid Kong. It's funny and well animated, but you kinda have to be there (and appreciate the Rabbids' goofy schtick).

Shenmue 3 Will Require a Whopping 100GB on PC
The highly anticipated sequel Shenmue 3 will require 100 GB of free space to install on your PC.
An update on Shenmue 3's Kickstarter page lists the system requirements for the PC version of the game as needing 100 GB of available space.
When you consider large open world games like The Witcher 3 clock in at around 45 GB this is a pretty sizeable install.
Other system requirements reveal the game is expected to need at least an Intel Core i5-4460 (3.40 GHz), 4 GB of ram, a GTX 650 Ti, and a broadband internet connection.
Shenmue 3 will have an open ending to allow for a sequel but the game has already been delayed twice now, being pushed back to a 2019 release. This might give us enough time to play the earlier games in the series again - ports for those have been in the works since before the Shenmue 3 announcement and should release sometime this year.

Pokemon Go Dev's New AR Tech Strives for More Realism
Pokemon Go developer Niantic has just released three trailers showing off its new Augmented Reality technology.

Tonehenge has players using their phones to view an AR environment in which they can cooperatively move and turn statues to unlock energy orbs. Control Is Like a Supernatural Quantum Break
Yes, Remedy's first multiplatform game since Max Payne 2 shares a lot in common with their ambitious 2016 cinematic action-adventure, Quantum Break. No, that's not a bad thing. It's most welcome, in fact, as it feels like a spiritual sequel, but with a tighter focus. Oh yeah, and supernatural powers too.
You play Jesse Faden (played by Quantum Break's Courtney Hope), the new director of the Federal Bureau of Control. She's been promoted there in the wake of the death of the previous director, and with that promotion comes certain...abilities, which will be useful in defending against The Hiss, a strange force that has invaded our reality and corrupted Bureau workers. She can use telekinetic abilities like Shield, which pulls clocks off of walls and chunks of nearby columns and holds them in front of her defensively, as well as Launch, which does the same but turns that debris around as an offensive weapon (at one point later in the demo, Faden flung a forklift at a target). She can also levitate, which became more useful the longer my demo went because the physics-defying three-dimensional transitions that got more and more outlandish the deeper inside the Bureau headquarters Faden went -- a space called The Oldest Place. And she even becomes the keeper of a nifty transforming pistol that only the Director can wield.

Resident Evil 2 Returns to its Horror Roots in the Best Ways
Out of all of Resident Evil's many phases – the old-school, fixed camera angled, tank controlled approach of the original three; the less restrained roaming camera of Code Veronica; the over-the-shoulder third-person action of Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6; and the gruesome first-person of Resident Evil 7 (not counting the series' many, many spin-offs) – my heart lies in the original three's oppressive survival horror.
I miss the careful, deliberate framing of scenes, the importance of pre-planning routes and inventory management, the near-instinctual understanding of your surroundings developed by smart, productive backtracking, and the obscure puzzle solving that can make something as mundane as a police station feel like a terrifying gothic castle. Based on my 30 minute demo, the Resident Evil 2 remake – officially titled Resident Evil 2 – strikes an elegant balance between these old-school elements and the more modernized format of recent entries.

Blizzard Exploring Big Changes to Sombra's Abilities
Big changes could be on the way for stealthy Overwatch character Sombra. Posting on the official Overwatch forums yesterday, Principal Designer Geoff Goodman detailed some Sombra changes Blizzard is currently testing – including infinite invisibility.
"These changes started by seeing how far we could push the duration of her Stealth and Translocator abilities," wrote Goodman. "As we pushed them out, it allowed her to play more and more as
scout/infiltrator for your team and also allowed her more time to pick and choose when and where she popped out to ambush her enemies.
"So now she has infinite duration on both Stealth and Translocator."
Sombra's Stealth ability allows her to become invisible, but it currently restricts her to up to five seconds of invisibility at a time followed by a cooldown of six seconds. The Translocator, a projectile Sombra can toss and teleport back to later, has an active timer of its own, lasting 20 seconds before being put into a four-second cooldown before another one can be tossed.

Warner Bros. Responds to Bethesda Westworld Lawsuit
UPDATE: Warner Bros. has responded to the Bethesda lawsuit in a statement provided to IGN.
"As one of the world's leading creators of intellectual property, including the ground-breaking television series Westworld, Warner Bros. has a deep respect for intellectual property rights. As such, the assertions by Bethesda Softworks that Warner's Westworld mobile game improperly used source code from Bethesda's Fallout Shelter are as surprising as they are unsubstantiated. Warner Bros. has been assured by the game developer, Behaviour Interactive, that Bethesda's allegations are untrue and that none of Bethesda's code was used in the Westworld game. Moreover, contrary to Bethesda's baseless accusation, Warner Bros. at no time "induced" Behaviour to use the Fallout Shelter code in Westworld."

The Last of Us 2 is Great - But There's Still a Way to Go for LGBTQ Representation in Games
I joked about the lesbian sex scene in Mass Effect 3 to anyone who would listen at the time, whooped about it as if it was the novelty porn my flatmates and I had watched in our first shared apartment. I thought it would be a scene I cringed through, a cynical product of my calculated romance option selections set deep in the Uncanny Valley. As it began, though, it hit me that I was watching an actual lesbian sex scene in a video game, between two characters I had grown to care about over a long period, whose relationship felt important to me. It felt too big to laugh at.
That was 2012. The Mass Effect trilogy was the first experience I had with LGBTQ characters in a video game since my grandma bought me a Gameboy in 1990. Nothing has measured up to that experience for me since, and of course, nothing could. It was revelatory to me in the way late-'90s queer films like But I'm a Cheerleader were -- my palms sweating, clutching the side of the couch and furtively glancing at the door in case my parents came in.

BioWare Producer Says Release Timing May Have Hurt Mass Effect: Andromeda
Mass Effect: Andromeda was not as critically well received as past entries in the series, and one BioWare producer offered his insight into one aspect he believes may have contributed to Mass Effect: Andromeda's review scores.
In a Twitter thread today, BioWare Executive Producer Mark Darrah wrote that he believes Andromeda suffered somewhat from releasing in the midst of a crowded schedule. Nier: Automata, Nioh, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild all released mere weeks before BioWare's sci-fi RPG. Darrah sees this as a "crowded" release environment, noting he believes each one of those games "does something better" than Andromeda, which he admitted to be a "flawed game."

Metro Exodus Is a Bit Rough Around the Edges So Far
After Metro Exodus' visually stunning reveal at last year's E3, I came into this year's event with the long-running post-apocalyptic survival shooter high on my list of games I was eager to get my hands on. Unfortunately, I walked out of my demo a lot less excited than I was going in, as technical woes plagued my hands-on session.
Metro Exodus isn't an open-world game, the developers told me, but it does have open-space missions where you're free to roam. And so my play session began on a bridge in one of these pseudo-open-world areas. We were on a train, which turned out to be our roving home base called the Aurora. We encountered a roadblock and slammed on the brakes. Playing as Artyom, I went to the engine room, where our group of allied survivors convened to figure out what to do next.

The pets included are a toad, cat, owl, and rat. Each will generate some Energy, Hogwarts Mystery's main resource for completing actions, upon waking them up in the morning. Players can keep all four in their dormitory, though only one will be able to follow them around the rest of the school.

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit Review
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit may not be particularly adventurous, per se, but it has heart on its side. This free Life is Strange prequel episode centers on the relationship between a wonderfully imaginative boy and his emotionally withdrawn father, but for all the depth and humanity of its storytelling it lacks enough tough challenges or meaningful decisions to make participating feel exciting.
Dontnod's two-hour game revolves around an innocently charming nine-year-old named Chris Erikson and his imaginary alter ego Captain Spirit as he copes with the death of his mother. The father-son dynamic is the emotional center of the story and certainly succeeded at moving me; Chris' father, Charles, clings to his basketball glory days and his beer and vents his sadness by yelling at Chris and leaving fist-sized dents in doors. (I happened to play Awesome Adventures soon after completing Detroit: Become Human, and the similar elements have me slightly concerned that "dads with substance abuse problems who scream at their children" is a troubling new gaming subgenre.) Though the story isn't notably innovative, it's engaging enough that I was never bored.

Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise Import Impressions
Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise is a crossover between post-apocalyptic manga classic Fist of the North Star and Sega's action-adventure series about the Japanese underworld, Yakuza. If that previous sentence made no sense to you, the barrier to entry may be high; but fans of either series will find something to enjoy.
Spin-offs included, more than a dozen games have been released in the Yakuza series since the first entry back in 2005. There may have been zombies and samurai, but the Fist of the North Star crossover is the first game in the series set in a completely fictional world.
Like in the original manga by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, the game follows the story of Kenshiro, the successor of a deadly martial art called Hokuto Shinken. After a nuclear war during the end of the Twentieth Century, the world has become a hopeless wasteland. Survivors are few, and the only law that counts is that the weak are victims of the strong.

The update also includes new basic trainings, including Escalation which lets you aim down your sights at double the speed after each kill on SMGs and your ammo will get refilled after each double kill. Wanderlust will respawn you with a new gun with up to six attachments, and Specialist lets you choose three basic trainings to earn instead of scorestreaks.

Australian Ratings Board Reviewing We Happy Few's Ban
The Australian Classification Board is reviewing its ban on We Happy Few's release after its it refused classification for the game.
Kotaku Australia explains the review comes after an appeal as the game was initially banned in the country due to apparently incentivising drug use in the context of the game.
The Classification Board's report stated "A player that takes Joy can reduce gameplay difficulty, therefore receiving an incentive by progressing though the game quickly." The appeal argues that drug use in the game is portrayed as negative, as it's used to control a dystopian society rather than a simple player benefit.

Update: Overwatch Posts a Second Teaser, Possibly for Hero 28
Update 06/26/18: The Overwatch account has now posted a second teaser set in the same location as the first - the difference being that a gigantic, rolling... something now rolls through the shot.
Many are speculating that this is Hero 28, although some have speculated that it could be to do with the return of the annual Summer Games event. That event usually kicks off in August, but it could perhaps come a little early to tie into the FIFA World Cup taking place at the moment.
