Riot Explained: Who Is the Marvel Villain in the Venom Movie?

The latest trailer for Sony's Venom movie offers a much better idea of both the general tone of the movie and its storyline. Not only that, it seems to confirm that Riz Ahmed's Carlton Drake will transform into Riot, one of many symbiote villains from the Marvel Universe. (And no, that is not Carnage in the trailer!)

While even casual Marvel fans are probably familiar with Venom at this point, Riot is a much more obscure Marvel character. Here's everything you need to know about Riot and how the movie is drawing from Marvel's comic book universe.

League of Legends Reveals New Game Mode, and It’s Not Battle Royale

League of Legends developer Riot Games has announced a new game mode, dubbed Nexus Blitz. It's the first of a new, community-driven method of testing possible additional game modes called Experimental Modes.

In a board post written by gameplay producer Michael "SpaceNorth" Chu, Riot detailed how these Experimental Modes differ from other timed content like the Ultra Rapid Fire mode that comes and goes: "With experimental modes, we're looking for something that could last a while—maybe even as a permanent addition to League."

No, Kingdom Hearts 3's Play Length Has Not Been Confirmed

Despite reports suggesting Kingdom Hearts 3 will have a campaign of around 40-50 hours, and additional content bolstering that number to an estimated 80 hours, Square Enix has not yet actually settled on the final length of the anticipated sequel.

A preview report from Geek.com of Kingdom Hearts 3 published earlier this month suggested those play time estimations had been confirmed. That would make for one of the longest main campaigns in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, and the news of this lengthy play time was reported by a number  of outlets as confirmation of KH3's official length earlier this week.

Fortnite 5.10 Update Will Add a New Mode and Two Guns

Fortnite's 5.10 update is coming tomorrow at 5 p.m. PDT, and it will include a new mode, a new gun, and the return of an old gun with some modifications.

In a post today, Epic Games detailed 5.10's content. One of the biggest editions is Fly Explosives, a limited-time mode that gives players jetpacks and arms them only with explosive weapons. The jetpacks will be tweaked a bit with increased fuel regeneration rates and decreased fuel burn rates to keep players airborne longer than normal when playing Fly Explosives. Epic is also expecting matches to be shorter than 20 minutes thanks to lowered between-storm wait times to help players quickly find the needed loot.

Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold Just Under 20 Million Units

Nintendo Switch console sales have reached almost 20 million units sold.

Nintendo's first quarter results are in for Q1 FY2018 and the company has revealed that the Switch's sales have reached 19.67 million units, while software sales for the platform have reached 83.93 units.

The top-selling Switch first-party titles haven't changed much since the end of last financial year, with Super Mario Odyssey up from 10 million units in April to 11.17 million units.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the next best-selling title, up from 9.22 million units in April to 10.35 million for 2018's first quarter. The game launched on Nintendo Switch at the end of April last year. We called it the "best entry in the series so far" and said that it was "just as amazing in 2017 as it was in 2014" in our review.

Chasm Review

What if you could play Castlevania over and over and never stop being surprised? That's what Chasm tries to deliver: a full Metroidvania where every new game has its own unique, randomized map. Its RPG-elements and awesome variety of beautifully animated enemies make it fun the first time through, but it's that push for replayability that ends doing more harm than good.

The layout of Chasm's map is randomized, pieced together with pre-built rooms to build a custom map that no one but you will experience. You still progressively unlock new movement abilities in a specific order -- like a wall climb or a double jump -- that open new paths as you go, but you won't be able to look up the locations you unlock them in a wiki.

WarioWare Gold Review

WarioWare Gold, the latest release in the offbeat Nintendo series that takes the expression 'a quick game is a good game' to its most literal extreme, is a greatest hits slab with substantial appeal for newcomers. It's just a shame that its assortment of rehashed 'microgames' and disappointingly mixed bag of unlockables combine for an overall package that feels all too familiar for existing fans.

As with previous entries in the series, the core gameplay of WarioWare Gold is a breakneck succession of gameplay microgames that put your reaction times to the test. This relentless think-quick shtick finds mirth in otherwise mundane tasks and distills classic Nintendo games down to a few frames of fun, with 3-5 second microgames that are separated into three main types: mash, which is button-based; twist, which uses the 3DS' built-in gyro-sensor; and touch, which requires tapping and swiping of the stylus. (There are also a few microphone-based games, but they all ultimately amount to just blowing air as hard as you can.)

No Man's Sky NEXT Review

With its latest update, called Next, No Man's Sky has rounded off enough of its rough edges and piled in enough content that exploring its weird galaxy is usually rewarding. It's definitely a treadmill, though, and while there are countless upgrades and ships to acquire, bases to build, and resources to mine, the process of earning them involves hours upon hours of mindless and repetitive work.

Hopping in a spaceship, flying out of the atmosphere into space, then landing on another planet that looks completely different from the one you just left is as amazing as ever – a feat that still hasn't been matched. Some worlds are scenic and beautiful, begging you to use the camera mode to capture the views of rolling hills with colorful plants and animals dotting the landscape and a ringed planet hanging over the horizon and peeking out between clouds; others are barren and ugly wastelands; and others are just bizarre. There really is an impressive range of sights.

The topic came about when Electronic Arts COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen was asked if Battlefield 5's battle royale mode (dubbed Battlefield Royale) might be spun off into a separate free-to-play product. Jorgensen shot down that idea, saying Battlefield Royale was "no different" than any other mode in Battlefield 5. Vampyr to Get Story Mode That De-emphasizes combat

The story mode intends to place a greater focus on the game's narrative, letting players take in the story without being too challenged by combat. The hard mode will naturally make combat more difficult and give players less experience for killing enemies, forcing them to interact with citizens more in order to develop their vampire powers.

EA's recent trend of including narrative-driven single-player campaigns might seem laughable on paper, but you can't argue with the results. Madden's Longshot, FIFA's Journey, and NBA Live's The One modes have all been surprisingly impressive and engaging, and all three are doing it again.

In Live's case, I had the chance to sit down and play the first hour or so of Live 19's The One, and in a very complimentary way I can say that the hour flew by. I began by creating my player for the story mode, and I took the opportunity to create a female player (NBA Live once again brings WNBA teams and players into the fold, to its credit). I'm not sure if it's always this way or just my experience, but every game I played had a female player on the opposing team to balance things out (i.e. so I wasn't physically overwhelmed by a wall of 6'10" 260-pound male players). After choosing gender you'll choose what type of player you want to be: a guard, a wing, or a big. True to my own childhood basketball experiences, I went with a guard so that I had a built-in excuse to handle the ball more often.

Opinion: Shadowverse Is Hard to Keep up With, but Is Better Because of It

Games like Hearthstone and Shadowverse rarely stand still, with new sets of cards added regularly, giving players new puzzles to solve, new strategies to master and new knowledge to acquire. The upside for engaged players is huge – there is actually no end to how much time you can spend engaging with a game and its community. The downside, of course, is the barrier to entry and learning curve that this presents – not just for new players, but for lapsed players too. And I'm not just talking about having a viable card collection, but understanding the meta – the popular decks, the match-ups and how you're going to tackle it.

Coming back to Shadowverse after a few months off has definitely illustrated this for me. I've played the game since it launched just over two years ago, so I have a very good grounding in the core mechanics, but Shadowverse's pace of change is high enough that it was still like diving into unknown waters when I came back, focused and ready to play. Thankfully, I think it's worth it.

The new map will be available in Tribute, Skirmish, Elimination, Brawl and Duel.

The Warden and Valkyrie will receive "major gameplay updates" to improve their versatility and efficiency, based on feedback from players.  Two new divisions in the Ranking System - Master and Grand Master - will also be introduced, and are described by Ubisoft as divisions "reserved for the fiercest warriors". A new Ranking Leaderboard will allow players to monitor their progress, and players will also be able to join Ranked Duel matches outside Tournaments. Tournaments will now be triggered on rotation.

A Halo...Arcade Game? 343 Explains the Origin of Halo: Fireteam Raven

In the long wait for another entry in the Halo-verse, no one would have guessed the next chance to share the screen with Master Chief would come in the form a mammoth arcade game. The announcement of Halo: Fireteam Raven – a joint effort between 343 Industries and arcade developers Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix – seemingly came out of nowhere.

In the few short months since that announcement, Halo: Fireteam Raven is already out in the wilds of Dave and Busters across the country, waiting for you and up to three others to gun down droves of Covenant and Flood as a the titular ODST foursome during the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. Forza Motorsport 7's Loot Boxes Will Be Removed By Winter

There's some more fallout from the ongoing loot box debate.

Turn 10 Studios today announced that it will be removing prize crates (its version of free loot crates) from Forza Motorsport 7, most likely during the coming winter. Additionally, Turn 10 will not be bringing paid tokens, which were included in previous Forza games, to either Forza Motorsport 7 or October's Forza Horizon 4.

"While we've never charged money for prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7, their presence in the game has continued to be a source of controversy," Studio Head Alan Hartman explained. "The overwhelming feedback has been that this system feels out of place in the game. After careful consideration, we have decided to completely remove prize crates from Forza Motorsport 7."

What Happens When Voice Actors Aren't Told What Game They're Voicing

For a normal actor, knowing what your role is and what movie or show you're in is just part of the process. It would be a little tough to act well if you're not sure whether you're a cowboy in a virtual theme park or an extra in a giant monster clash. Cissy Jones, a voice actor known for her roles as Delilah in Firewatch and Fury in the upcoming Darksiders 3, knows this all too well. One day, Jones was brought into a studio to record dialogue for a small part in an upcoming project she knew nothing about. Once there, the acting directors instructed her to play the role of a prostitute in various situations, including having her car stolen, being thrown out a window, and being burned alive.

How Assassin's Creed Odyssey Introduces RPG Choices

Player choice is baked into the core of every aspect of Odyssey's massive rendition of ancient Greece, furthering the series' transformation into a full-fledged role-playing game after the initial introduction of RPG progression elements in Assassin's Creed Origins. "We are really embracing the role-playing aspect of RPGs," says Odyssey's Creative Director Jonathan Dumont. "We are continuing that transformation.

The Banner Saga 3 Review

Stoic Games' denouement to their beautifully animated, Viking-inspired epic contains, in heaping doses, more of everything that made the first two turn-based tactics games so strong. The Banner Saga 3 offers a bloody and satisfying conclusion to the trilogy with plenty of tough choices, challenging encounters, and vivid characters. At the same time, it also fails to address the series' few weaknesses: Rote combat, an avalanche of side characters with little importance to the plot, and a short adventure. Still, it spins a good yarn and delivers immediate consequences to your decisions in such a way that I was left wanting more.

It is the little details that lend weight to the stakes facing this beautiful, hand-drawn world. The devastation beyond the darkness as Iver's band travels further into the belly of the proverbial beast is unnerving, almost haunting. The fates of his band of Ravens felt as immediate as the grander mission, with simple tactical decisions as we plodded along carrying immediate life-or-death outcomes. I chose poorly more than once, but each time I did so it felt fair. Whether they were a result of ignoring the advice of a seasoned companion or just misreading a situation, in hindsight it was clear that the failures I suffered were mine alone.

Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 Review

The excellent Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 is a tough act to follow, but Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 doesn't even come close. It contains X5 through X8, which range in quality from good all the way down to awful. At least Capcom put a lot of love into the port even if the games themselves don't necessarily deserve much.

Just like the first collection, there are a lot of fun little extras in this package. The Museum collects all the music, artwork, products, and trailers from the series and there are plenty of screen options to tune the look and feel to your liking. Those include stretching the game to take up the entire 16:9 screen or keeping it 4:3 and retaining aspect ratio while taking up as much space as possible. You can also choose to have borders on or off, smooth out the graphics in filter settings, or turn off all of that so the games are presented with their original look.

Monster Hunter: World's PC Port Actually Runs Great So Far

Six months after its console release, we've finally got our hands on the PC version of Monster Hunter: World! Even better still, I'm happy to say that, so far, it seems to be a great port.

First off, it looks fantastic. That's helped by the fact that it doesn't have a resolution or frame rate cap – it defaults to being locked at 60fps, but that's super easy to change. The graphics options aren't overly deep, but there are enough nitty-gritty options there to tune it nicely to your system.

I was able to hold at least a solid 60fps at 1080p on 'Highest' settings with a GTX 1070 GPU, which is great to see. With a GTX 1080 running on 1440p, 'Highest' settings only ran around 45fps for us, but 'High' hit 60fps no problem, and some more involved tweaking could probably find a good middle ground. So while Monster Hunter World seems to be a somewhat demanding game if you want to max out its graphical options, it runs pretty great in general.

Although it's not known precisely how much Fortnite has fueled that valuation, it's clearly played a major role in it. But, as Bloomberg pointed out, it is known that Chinese company Tencent Holdings Ltd. purchased 40 percent of Epic in 2012 for $330, when the entire company was worth $825 million. That means Epic has gained up to seven billion dollars in value in about six years.

Halo: Fireteam Raven Review

The Halo: Fireteam Raven arcade cabinet is nothing if not imposing. The massive construction includes twin 65-inch 1080p TVs linked together – a 21st-century version of the classic X-Men arcade cabinet – forming a giant, ultra-widescreen play area. Four padded seats fill the pod, which is enclosed by glowing Halo rings; each chair is equipped with a heavyweight mounted gun turret controller that's lavishly decked out with LED strips that change color when you pull the trigger. It certainly looks the part. And, thankfully, the light-gun game within largely lives up to the presentation.

Halo: Fireteam Raven – currently exclusive to Dave and Buster's – is a fun, four-player romp across the original Halo ring from Combat Evolved that mixed in enough weapon variety to leave me smiling at the end of a run through the 45-minute campaign. I played through all six missions in four-player mode, and then played through the first half of it again with just two of us. Like any co-op game it's clearly a better experience with every seat filled – but the AI that substitutes for missing players keeps your flanks just safe enough to not feel like a burden. It doesn't demand any real coordination between players beyond keeping whatever area of the screen you decide is your territory clear of threats, so no inside knowledge of Halo is needed in order to be successful.

Devs Giving Free Games to Those Who Bought Pirated Copies from Amazon

After fans discovered last week that Amazon's storefront was hosting pirated sales of indie games Surviving Mars and Frostpunk, the games' developers worked with Amazon to shut down the illegitimate sales. And now the games' developers are giving away free copies to anyone who purchased a pirated copy, IGN has learned.

"After some discussion, we've decided that all the people that contacted us and provided the receipt for buying the game on Amazon will receive a free Steam code for Frostpunk from us," PR & Marketing Manager Karol Zajaczkowski said over email. "We are still in touch with Amazon and some other companies that suffered from this event, but it may take some time to find a satisfying solution. In the meantime, we don't want to keep people waiting if they wanted to play our game, as they didn't do anything wrong here."

Fortnite: Honorable Rescue Mission Immortalized with New In-Game Tribute

Last week Fortnite fans were captivated by the heroic player who attempted to save an enemy in need, and now this mission has been immortalized with an honorable tribute added in today's update.

Players familiar with last week's failed rescue attempt remember it all too well. After discovering an enemy player who had fallen down to the bottom of a cliff, streamer Muselk devised ways to get the poor opponent out. Once he discovered the player was below the build limit on the map, Muselk drove an ATK off the side of the cliff in an attempt to give the enemy the bouncy roof of the vehicle. Although it was heartfelt, the golf cart ended up hurling the opponent into the ocean. You can watch the entire clip here.
