Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition Review

When we first reviewed Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017, we gave it a 9.6 for Amazing. Here's what we said then:

Divinity: Original Sin 2 may have been designed in the spirit of decades-old RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2, but that legacy serves only as a foundation for the expansive game Larian has built on top of it. Few other RPGs allow such a wide range of flexibility while also supporting rewarding combat and a powerful story. This will be remembered as one of the greats. - Leif Johnson

Now, the Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition refines and retools some elements of the first game that didn't quick stick as a free update for owners of the original on PC, and ushers that excellent isometric experience onto consoles for the first time. And that translation to console is skillfully executed, delivering one of the greatest RPGs in recent memory with near-lossless quality.

One of Dota’s Weirdest Heroes Is Becoming One of Artifacts Craziest Cards

Not all existing Dota 2 heroes are guaranteed to make it into Valve's next game, Artifact, but this crafty Geomancer, Meepo, is confirmed to get a card counterpart, and IGN has the first details on his cards.

In Artifact, almost every known hero card has either a passive or active ability and a signature spell card. Meepo is unique in that his card has both an active and a passive. His active ability, Poof, allows Meepo to move to an allied Meepos lane and deal 2 damage to his new enemy neighbors. His passive or "continuous effect" ability, United We Fall, requires that if Meepo dies, allied Meepos in other lanes die too.

Like in Dota 2, Meepo's signature spell allows him to summon another Meepo. You can see the spell card and the art for other Meepo in the slideshow below. Each hero comes with three copies of their signature spell card, so there's potential to have four Meepos across the board at once.

How Valve Won’t Let Artifact’s Marketplace Get Crazy Expensive

Artifact, the next game from Half-Life developer Valve, is decidedly bucking digital card game trends. Not only is it not free-to-play, it's not going to have any kind of free in-game currency to spend on cards -- a decision Valve tells me is to avoid the grind that can make other CCGs feel like a job instead of a game.

"At its core, we want you to play the game because you enjoy playing the game," programmer Brandon Reinhart told me when I visited Valve last week. They don't want you to feel obligated to do daily quests just so you have enough gold to get a pack that might have the card you want. They want you to just play the game.

So instead of the usual digital model, Artifact is following a physical one like that of Magic: The Gathering -- whose creator, Richard Garfield, is also the lead designer of Artifact. It will have a $20 price tag that gets you two full decks and 10 card packs, and all card packs after that cost $2 each.

Valve Is 'Very Aware of All the Jokes' People Make

It's hard to go long on the internet without running into a 'Half-Life 3 confirmed' joke, the eternal meme as we collectively wait for the third installment of Valve's legendary FPS series to materialize. And speaking to the development team of Valve's next game, Artifact, at their office in Seattle last week, Valve clearly hasn't missed those jokes either.

"I think we're very aware of all the jokes because all of us lurk all the forums and share them around with each other," says Jeep Barnett, a programmer on Artifact and a member of the original team that made Narbacular Drop, who were all hired to create Portal as a result.

Why Torchlight Frontiers Is My Most Anticipated ARPG Since Diablo 2

Immediately upon playing Torchlight Frontiers, I was presented with a choice between the two currently playable classes: the Dusk Mage and Forged. The former is a powerful magic user charged with wielding both the immense powers of dark and light in perpetual harmony. The latter is a robot. I chose the robot.

I felt an immediate sense of adoration for my sputtering little steampunk monstrosity, who looked inescapably like Maurice's cast iron furnace contraption from Beauty and the Beast. As Echtra Games CEO Max Schaefer explained, my little automaton wouldn't simply equip gear but would instead integrate it into his body. If I equipped a rare pair of leggings, for example, they might change my four spider-like robot-legs into two sturdy tank treads.

Survivor of Jacksonville Shooting Sues EA and Venue

One of the survivors of the Jacksonville shooting has officially filed a lawsuit against EA, the venue the tournament took place, and six other potentially liable parties.

The survivor, Jacob Mitich, competed in the tournament and sustained injuries after being shot twice. The lawsuit in question (via The Hollywood Reporter) claims the various parties are liable due to negligence in not providing sufficient security, and for hosting the tournament at an unsuitable venue in the first place.

The lawsuit points at The Landing marketplace, which houses the GLHF Game Bar where the shooting took place, and identifies it as a "hub of dangerous, violent and too often, deadly activity." It further points to recent violence in the area, including a hit-and-run murder, a stabbing and a double shooting, ultimately questioning EA's decision in holding the event in this location.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw Revealed

Developer Double Damage has revealed Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, the follow-up (or rather, a "sort-of prequel," as the developers put it) to its acclaimed 2015 space combat game. The studio calls Outlaw "a blue-collar space combat adventure packed with outlaws, explosions, gleefully unrealistic spaceflight, and a hell of a soundtrack."

In Outlaw, you play Juno Markev, 34 years before the events of Rebel Galaxy. Markev left her life of crime behind until she got pulled back into the outlaw life.

ABOVE: Watch the awesome animated reveal trailer for Rebel Galaxy Outlaw.

Aiming for release in Q1 2019 on PC, PS4, and Switch, "Rebel Galaxy Outlaw features high-octane space combat, over 20 hours of subspace radio, side activities like billiards and dice poker, plenty of sketchy characters to meet, and sketchy jobs to take on. Nobody's saving the universe around here - they'd settle for saving a couple of credits." Double Damage co-founder Travis Baldree said, ""We took what worked from the last title, and then went a little crazy. It's got a stronger focus on story and place, a huge jump in detail, and while it still works great for folks with a HOTAS at home, I think we've managed to make space combat accessible and fun for everybody else in a way that nobody has managed before. We've got a lot more to share in the months ahead."

The (Sometimes Dangerous) Power of The Video Game Community

In the '90s and early aughts, the relationship between those who made video games and those who bought and played them had a very clear beginning and end. Publishers and studios would work together to push a game out, consumers would buy the game (or rent it, which was often the case), play it, and that was essentially that. There was no Beta, no external feedback, and little transparency from behind the scenes. The game was done, the transaction made, and you liked it or you lumped it.

In 2018, that relationship is much more opaque. One of the biggest trends in video games over the last ten years has been the shift towards a model that focuses on player retention and games as a service, and as a result, consumers have more power than ever before. If we're spending significant money on a gaming experience -- particularly one that is continually evolving in an effort to keep us along for the ride -- we need to be able to have a voice in what that experience is that we're committing to, lest it exist in a bubble.

Hello Games has announced the first in a series of No Man's Sky community events, which will centre around returning character Specialist Polo's discovery of "another iteration of the universe" and task players with helping them learn more about this "glitch in reality".

The news was announced in a blog post, with studio boss Sean Murray clarifying that the community events will be open to all explorers who have completed the first Space Anomaly mission, with Specialist Polo contacting these players directly to ask for assistance.

This week's event has been referred to as "the first chapter" of an ongoing research project and tasks players with visiting "a specific corner of the galaxy" (although no details of where that is are given in the post) to excavate and return a selection of "strange objects" which have begun spawning underground. Returning these objects will reward players with Quicksilver, a valuable resource that can be used to create a variety of exclusive exotic collectables.

Bioware Says Anthem Is a 'Continued Evolution' from Its Past RPGs

Anthem's Game Director, Jon Warner said that despite what fans have speculated about Anthem being a departure from past BioWare games, the upcoming game is actually an evolution of their craft.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Warner called Anthem an "amalgamation" of everything BioWare has done to date. An MMO looter shooter seems on the surface to be a change of course from the single-player RPGs BioWare is beloved for, but Warner insisted the changes are evolutionary.

"If you look at BioWare games on a spectrum, from Baldur's Gate to Neverwinter, and Jade Empire to Knights of the Old Republic, to Mass Effect and Dragon Age," Warner said, "you'll see that the games have always been about evolving our technique and storytelling... so the way that we look at it, Anthem is not a departure, it's the continued evolution of our craft and our technique."

Marvel's Spider-Man Fans Are Arguing About Puddle Sizes

Some gamers who were looking forward to Spider-Man's release next week are claiming Insomniac Games has downgraded Spider-Man's visuals, leading to smaller puddles and several other perceived problems.

Redditors are arguing over whether or not the textures look worse in the release versions – but one thing everyone agrees on is that what once was a giant puddle is now a smaller puddle.

Whether or not consumers will let this lead to a buying decision is unknown. While some fans have made jokes that it would be a silly reason to not buy Marvel's Spider-Man, others are sticking to their guns and letting Insomniac hear about it on Twitter.

Warriors Orochi 4's Smartest Addition Is Some Very Dumb Magic

It feels like the Warriors series is constantly looking for a way to act smarter than its fans actually want it to be. The release of any given Dynasty, Samurai, or spin-off Warriors game will come with the promise of some new idea or other. We've had flexible combo systems, skill-based special gauges, weapon classes, squad controls. The last 'innovation' was the most sweeping of all, as Dynasty Warriors 9 swapped the series' compact, enemy-packed battlefields for an astonishingly empty open world that, somehow, still wouldn't run properly. The less said about that the better.

The thing is, I'd imagine the majority of Warriors fans are in the same boat as me. Perversely, this is a series beautiful entirely because of its mindlessness. Sweeping bright red enemy armies from the mini-map feels closer to the pleasure of a Tetris or an emptied pool table than the stresses of the hardcore action games Omega Force has seemed keen to copy in the past.

Battlefield 5 Delayed By a Month

EA has announced that Battlefield 5 - originally due for release October 19 - has had its release date pushed back a month, and will now release November 20.

The news comes from Oskar Gabrielson, General Manager of developer DICE, in a blog post on EA's website. He seems to point to player feedback as being the primary reason behind the delay, thanking the "tens of thousands" of players who have played both during closed alphas or in demo booths at events such as E3 and Gamescom, and highlights some positive feedback around weapons handling and player movement.

It seems that core gameplay is the sticking point, with Gabrielson pointing in particular to "gameplay tempo", as well as "soldier visibility" and "player friction". While he doesn't go into any details around the specifics of the feedback, he does state that players will see improvements in these areas in the game's upcoming open beta, which kicks off September 6 (or September 4 for pre-orders or members of Origin Access Premier, Origin Access Basic or EA Access).

How Dragon Quest's Creator Invented JRPGs

I think most of us have an informal mental list of people we wish they could meet, and I think that's especially true in the entertainment and game industries. I'll often hear Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima batted around in newsroom conversations, but for me, there's no higher name in my pantheon of hero worship than Yuji Horii. And now here I am in an upstairs room at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, sitting across the table from him.

I've told friends that the course of my professional life has been equally defined by my childhood encounters with Jesus and video games, and I don't think that's a bit of an exaggeration. As a former clergyman and current video game commentator, I've divided my adulthood between metaphysics and pixels, and both have proven worthwhile pursuits. One thing both fields hold in common, and perhaps the tie that most binds them in me, is that they are both intrinsically rooted in stories of trying, failing, trying again, learning, exploring, growing, and finally overcoming. They are stories of second chances and becoming better people.

Pokemon Go Took Over a City in Japan for a Safari Zone

Pokemon Go is no stranger to live events. Aside from a messy debut in Chicago last year and a redeeming follow-up last month, Pokemon Go has held more than half a dozen Safari Zone events across Europe and Asia, spanning locations from The Netherlands to Taiwan.

This week, the latest Safari Zone is in Yokosuka, Japan, a waterfront city roughly 90 minutes outside of Tokyo. The August timeframe for a Japan event was taken last year by the city of Yokohama, which declined to hold a follow-up event this year after over-attendance caused traffic problems and delays in 2017. By contrast, the city of Yokosuka has welcomed Pokemon Go with open arms.

This additional seasonal content will be free of charge, although some updates will be exclusive to players who have purchased Forsaken. As an example, Season of the Outlaw will see both a Raid (Last Wish), as well as an "evolution" for the Dreaming City, exclusive to Forsaken players.

Although few details were mentioned, Siliconera highlighted a few key details: Nagoshi indicated that the announcement would take place somewhere around Tokyo Game Show, which takes place September 19-23. Whether this would be part of a conference or whether Sega is planning a separate event isn't something he'd be drawn on, saying only that the announcement will take place "before the next Sega-nama", which is at the end of September.

7 Iconic Locations We Want in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout Mode

The latest entry in Treyarch's long-running Black Ops series is almost here, and with a traditional campaign officially scrapped (at least for launch), Black Ops 4 is doubling down on multiplayer in a big way. This year's substantial inclusion is the Battle Royale-inspired mode Blackout — Call of Duty's take on the wildly popular genre that's taken the industry by storm over the last year and half.

One of the major components to a good Battle Royale game is, of course, the large map that players venture through in search of chicken dinners (or victory royales). PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds now has three maps in its rotation, while Fortnite alters its map significantly every three months via seasonal updates. Given Black Ops is one of the most successful Call of Duty sub-series to date — and as we're still mostly in the dark about Blackout's map and where Treyarch will go with it — now is as good as time as any to take a look back at the series and consider some memorable locations that would be a good fit.

Bethesda's Pete Hines on Playing Fallout 76 Solo and Why 'Replayable' is a Dirty Word

During an interview with Bethesda's Senior Vice President of global marketing and communications Pete Hines at Gamescom this year, I ask if he's getting sick of talking about Bethesda's position as the saviour of the single-player experience by now, several months since its 'save player one' campaign. "I mean, a little," he says. "But single player is part of who we are. We're also the folks that make Elder Scrolls Online. We make Quake Champions. We make Elder Scrolls: Legends. But single player is part of who we are."

Bethesda also makes Fallout 76, the first Fallout to be a shared-world experience. Somewhat unsurprisingly, it's one that Hines plays solo.

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Review

Monster Hunter Generations arrived in 2016 on Nintendo 3DS, compiling memorable monsters and areas from the series into one, mammoth package. Here's what we thought at the time:

"Monster Hunter Generations hits the core tenets of what makes this series great. Great gear drives the lust for the hunt even on the small scale, but the big, spectacular fights ultimately matter the most. Generations' tweaked combat adds just the right tools to make slaying epic boss monsters a fun activity that's just as fun online or off. Playable companions help shake up the gathering game without taking away resources, and its fun to play as a wackier character. Generations only falters during slower moments spent on fetch quests and in wrangling through menus before the hunt."

Onimusha's Insane 20-Level Dungeon

When Onimusha: Warlords came out for PS2 back in 2001, it was most often described as a feudal-Japan version of Resident Evil. The survival horror genre of the late '90s and early 2000s was dominated by games with fixed cameras, tank controls, and lots of pixelated blood-spatter, and Onimusha was right in line with its contemporaries. As a huge fan of the survival-horror genre, I was instantly sold by Onimusha: Warlords' setting, a blend of Japanese history and mythology.

It's one of those games I knew I would enjoy long before I even played it, and when I finally did buy myself a copy, I was smitten. It was the Dark Realm sidequest that really cemented my love of Onimusha, and looking back 17 years later, it's the part of the game I remember most of all.

The Forgotten Capcom Horror Series That Needs a Reboot

With Resident Evil 7's successful reinvigoration of the horror franchise last year and the upcoming remake of Resident Evil 2 looking equally terrifying, it's safe to say that Capcom's premiere franchise is riding high. Now that's all well and good, but in their efforts to repair their favored series, Capcom are missing a golden opportunity to revive a few of their extinct titles, starting with Dino Crisis.

For those too young to remember the time when dinosaurs roamed the PlayStation, Dino Crisis was a survival horror game from legendary director Shinji Mikami – one of the lead creating forces behind the Resident Evil series and, more recently, The Evil Within. Set on a remote island, Dino Crisis follows a special forces team's attempts to capture Dr. Kirk, an archetypal mad scientist who had faked his own death and gone into hiding. Not long after landing, the team discovers that the facility has been infested by Cretaceous carnivores and has to battle their way off the island.

Cyberpunk 2077 Devs Experimenting With Fully Destructible Environments

The development team at CD Projekt Red are pulling in a heavy amount of in-game destruction to Cyberpunk 2077 in order to create the rawness of a dystopian world.

"So we're trying to push the interactivity of the world by adding in details from a physical side," Tost said. "The game will be highly physical, will have a lot of destruction. You can see that in the demo when you're in the scavengers area and you shoot at the pillars and they start crumbling.

Tost said there will be a high level of gore in the game as well, and that it all adds to the feel of the dystopian world they are trying to create for players.

Far Cry 5: Dead Living Zombies DLC Review

It wouldn't be a big-budget shooter released in 2018 without a zombie-themed expansion, and Far Cry 5's latest DLC, called Dead Living Zombies, dutifully indulges that trend. With the same goofy humor we saw in the previous Mars-themed DLC, this one takes us to a fun nightmarish version of the Montana countryside that's crawling with undead fodder. It's not bad as zombie-killing shooting galleries go, but the humorous movie-themed approach alone isn't quite enough to hold back the creeping feeling that I'd killed these same exact zombies quite a few times before.

Like in similarly framed games like Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep or Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, this adventure is controlled by a narrator whose ideas are changing on the fly. In this case, would-be director Guy Marvel pitches seven ridiculous zombie scripts to Hollywood's elite, each more fun and absurd than the last. One of my favorite missions, called Undying Love, uses the story of Romeo and Juliet as a backdrop and spices it up a little bit, with a modern-day gang war and of course, plenty of zombies. This storytelling technique is cleverly used, with various weapons, vehicles, and even strange romantic scenes involving zombies magically appearing whenever Marvel has a new idea.

The Messenger Review

The Messenger has a lot going for it. It's a 2D action platformer with a gorgeous aesthetic that seamlessly goes from 8 to 16-bit, it has a hilarious sense of humor, clever dialogue, and one of the absolute best retro-themed "chiptune" soundtracks out there. There was even a period of time while playing The Messenger, once I unlocked its full suite of core abilities, when I felt this might be one of the best games I've played all year.

But then, something happens at about the halfway point. The Messenger changes genre completely from a linear action platformer like Ninja Gaiden on the NES, to a sprawling Metroidvania. Unfortunately, it fumbles this transition, padding the back half with repetitive backtracking and boring fetch quests.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age Review

Dragon Quest XI is a distilled, energetic, mathematically elegant epic that takes what I love most about traditional dungeon crawlers and masterfully iterates on the formula. On the surface, Dragon Quest XI seems to be a simple return to the single-player RPG format, after deviating into MMO territory for Dragon Quest X. But that simplicity is a purposefully-crafted facade that melts away after a little time in the immense, complex world. Dragon Quest isn't simple... it's pure. Someone Created a Luigi's Mansion AR Game Using Labo

Japanese Nintendo fans have taken the build-it-yourself approach of Nintendo Labo to an impressive new level - crafting a Luigi's Mansion AR game using the software's Toy-Con Garage.

As shared on Twitter by user Nawafuji, the game is simple - explore a dark room and, if you find a Boo, vigorously shake the Labo to simulate Luigi's trademark Poltergust 3000.

The way it was created was anything but simple, however. Using a magnifying glass and some clever cardboard creativity, the Poltergust build allows the Switch screen to be projected onto the wall. Some immensely complex Toy-Con Garage code means that projection usually looks like a flashlight beam, but passing over a reflective sheet turns that image into a pixel art Boo, which is then sucked up by using motion controls. You can see it in action below:

PES 2019 Review

PES 2019 makes an interesting distinction. It's not a game about football so much as it is a game about the guys playing football. And exactly how they play it - their behaviours, tendencies, and individual techniques - makes for a livelier game. No longer are you a massive deity in the sky moving generic pieces around a pitch, nor should you think of your team as a collection of stats. Here, players take on a life of their own.

The biggest development is a feature called Magic Moments. This refers to a set of 39 RPG-like traits that are distributed across the roster of players in combinations that give each of them their own personality. So, for instance, only gifted shooters like Kevin De Bruyne can hit ferocious rising thunder-bastards that rifle into the net, while Ronaldo's headers are practically laser-guided. Magic Moments go further than merely adding new moves, though. They also offer effects such as fighting spirit (which gives players better performance when fatigued), super sub (where players improve if brought on in the second half), and man marking (which enables a player to more doggedly stick to opponents). What's good is these animations happen automatically, whether a pinpoint cross or an acrobatic clearance off the goal line, triggering by themselves if you're in the right time and place. This makes players feel as distinct to control as they are to watch.

Strange Brigade Review

Rebellion may have made a name for itself with the realistic ballistics and gruesome, testicle-popping kills of the Sniper Elite series, but with Strange Brigade, it feels like the Oxford-based developer has found its over-the-top, tea-swilling, alliteration-obsessed voice.

Colonial British sensibilities are the order of the day for this third-person co-op shooter. The four playable characters from the secret arm of the Department of Antiquities feel ripped from the pages of a 1930s pulp novella. There's Nalangu Rushida, an African tribeswoman; Frank Fairburne, sharpshooter and relative to the protagonist of the Sniper Elite series; the mild-mannered scholar Professor Archimedes De Quincy; and a Manchester-raised boxer and factory worker by the name of Gracie Braithwaite. Reminiscent of Rosie the Riveter, seeing her uppercut a teleporting demon after telling them to "leave it out" in a thick Northern English accent quickly cemented her as my favourite. An accident at a North African dig site sets the story up and, as is often the way with video games, you'll resolve it by shooting lots and lots of undead.

Microsoft Is Interested in Acquiring Even More New Studios

Microsoft isn't done acquiring studios, and according to Matt Booty, head of Microsoft Studios, they have interest in developers that are capable of bringing "content that is a little different to what our big AAA franchises can deliver."

Speaking to Gamesindusty.biz, Booty elaborated and said while they aren't trying to hit a "quota", they do want to expand the breadth of their titles, especially content that is geared more towards Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

"I don't want to seem like we're going out to fill a quota," Booty explains. "It's not about filling a spreadsheet by any means. That means content that is a little different to what our big AAA franchises can deliver"
