Nintendo Switch Online Surpasses 8 Million Subscribers

Since its launch in September of 2018, Nintendo Switch Online has gained over eight million subscribers, not including free trials.

During Nintendo's financial results briefing, it revealed the milestone for Nintendo Switch's online service and said that it is "working on continuing to expand the service offerings."

While it currently provides subscribers with such features as cloud saves, online play, and an ever-growing library of NES games, there have been reports that SNES games may be added to the service in the future.

Another Rumor Suggests a Smaller, Portable-Focused Nintendo Switch Coming in 2019

A new report suggests that a smaller version of Nintendo Switch will be released in 2019 which will cost less, but remove features to focus on portability as a result.

The report comes from Nikkei (via Gematsu) and says this move comes after Nintendo lowered its sales targets for the year from 20 million Switch units to 17 million, and is looking to launch this portable version early in order to expand its user base. Nikkei claims that Nintendo has told multiple suppliers and developers about the plans to release this smaller switch.

It Looks Like Marshmello's Playing a Concert This Weekend... in Fortnite

Marshmello, an American DJ and electronic music producer, will almost definitely be playing a concert in Fortnite this weekend.

Though Epic has not made any official announcements, the evidence that this concert will be happening is solid. First, on Marshmello's website, he's listed that his next official concert will be happening at Pleasant Park on February 2. Meanwhile, a stage is currently being set up within the Pleasant Park suburban area of the Fortnite map, right on top of a football field.

Then, most tellingly, there are multiple posters advertising this concert in Pleasant Park on February 2 at 11am PT/2pm ET as part of a showtime challenge - check out our wiki guide to see exactly where these posters are. As reported by Forbes, there was also a major series of leaks that include a Marshmello skin, other Marshmello event challenges, animations for the event and more.

Overwatch has just released its new Paris map on the games' public test region server.

The new map is an assault map like Temple of Anubis and Volskaya Industries. As such it will see players trying to capture or defend points while navigating iconic Parisian scenery alongside the Seine river.

The landmarks include the Cabaret Luna, Pâtisserie Galand, and the grand palace located in the centre of the city, Maison Marat.

Blizzard also released several posters advertising the Cabaret Luna which appear to feature humans and the robotic Omnics in equal measure and potentially even in romantic engagements.

While this Paris map is already available for players to jump in on the PTR there's no word about when we'll see it on the regular servers where the Overwatch Year of The Pig celebrations are in full swing.

Epic's Store Isn't Ready for All Its Exclusives

As more and more PC games are starting to favor Epic Games Store exclusivity, the thought that it's the first real threat to Steam is becoming increasingly likely. The first big game to abandon Steam was The Division 2, but Metro Exodus recently removed itself with little warning just weeks before launch, and players are understandably upset.

Frankly, I thought these kinds of high profile games camping out at the Epic Games Store would take a whole lot longer. I figured Epic would make it an enticing place for developers, but I didn't think we'd see an exodus (sorry) of this nature so quickly. Primarily because the Epic Games store just isn't really ready to be the sole platform for such big games.

PS5 Games We Think May Already Be in Development

As next-gen discussion continues to point us toward what we can expect from the PS5 and Next-Xbox, a new report suggests Sony's first-party efforts are now allegedly focusing mostly on PS5.

Of course, we still have three big, announced first-party games set to come to the PS4, but, if Sony is doubling down on next-gen efforts, could these games be making the jump to next-gen?

We've decided to take a look at what first- and third-party games that we already know are in development for the PS4 are likely already in production for the PS5 (possibly cross-gen, or with efforts looking just toward the next generation), even if we're not necessarily in a rush for Sony's next-gen console.

Exploring Rage 2’s Wasteland of Opportunity

Up until now exposures to Rage 2 have been fairly linear affairs; the barren open world expanse of Avalanche Studios and id's post-apocalyptic shooter sequel has remained strictly off limits in favour of highlighting the game's overhauled and overcharged combat system. For my latest hands-on with the game I wasn't quite given the keys to the kingdom, but I was handed the keys to a rusted out bucket of bolts generously referred to as a 'car' and allowed to tour a small section of Rage 2's map.

My first stop was a return to the city of Wellspring. The ramshackle sprawl of neon and rust from the original game was begging to be reexamined, but since my time with the game was limited I decided to hustle past the bulletin boards covered in job contracts, and various other NPC quest-givers, and instead trigger the main story mission. Wellspring mayor, Loosum Hagar, was locked in a power struggle with an entitled twerp named Klegg Clayton (the wealthy offspring of Mayor Clayton from the original), and I was charged with sneaking into Clayton's high-rise office in order to plant a bug on his computer. In order to gain access to his domain, I had to first build up my celebrity status by becoming a reality TV star in a manner so ruthless it would make a Kardashian wince.

Wargroove Review

Someone at Chucklefish clearly got tired of waiting for Nintendo to bring back Advance Wars, because Wargroove's turn-based tactics combat is as close to a modern, fantasy-themed revival as you'll find. But this isn't a game that relies only on its gorgeous pixel-art nostalgia to win your love: Wargroove is a challenging and extremely fun tactics game, with great multiplayer options and a level editor strong enough to make an entire tactics game of your own.

Instead of controlling a party of bespoke heroes like in a Fire Emblem game, Wargroove gives you a unique commander and has you summon waves of disposable units mid-battle. Obviously you'll still want to play smart and keep your troops alive, but removing that fear of losing someone with a name and a face to perma-death or having to worry about getting your favorite characters kills to level them up makes for a lighter and snappier tactical flavor.

Alien: Blackout Review

A mobile game in the style of Five Nights at Freddy's probably isn't what most people had in mind when excitement for a new Alien game started to stir. As a consolation, Alien: Blackout packs decent thrills for a quick playthrough, and its retro-future computer display interface and sound effects fit the tone and atmosphere of the universe perfectly.

Calling Alien: Blackout a survival-horror game would be a gross exaggeration. It's really more of an objective-based, hide-and-seek puzzle game with a sprinkle of scary tension and stress to push you as you direct your ship's crew to avoid a rampaging xenomorph using a computer terminal that displays them and their pursuer as dots. The voice acting is really well done, especially for main character Amanda Ripley (the daughter of Ellen who also starred in 2014's Alien: Isolation), and there's quite a lot more story than you'd expect out of a mobile game, even if it is pretty by-the-numbers without any significant hooks or twists. You should expect your muscles to tense up when the alien is spotted or you need a crew member to hurry up and hide, but it's far from the anxiety-riddled paranoia of other actual survival-horror games.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Still Needs Better Patch Notes

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's 2.0 patch just dropped, adding Piranha Plant as a DLC character and letting you play its Spirit Boards with up to four players. Another round of balance changes also arrived alongside side those additions and, similar to last time, Nintendo veered away from giving hard data on how it changed its fighters.

Despite being widely praised for its transparency around Metroid Prime 4 just last week, the Smash Bros. patch notes continue to be frustratingly opaque. This time Nintendo at least gave a full list of which fighters and moves were changed (a big step up from the barren "game balance adjustments" line from the last patch), but it still didn't provide a detailed account of damage adjustments and number changes like nearly every other online game does. The 2.0 patch is a massive move in the right direction, but Nintendo should still do better.

Space Game Teased in Watch Dogs 2 Reportedly Rebooted Rather Than Canceled

The game codenamed Pioneer, a non-violent exploration title from Ubisoft, has reportedly been rebooted as a co-op multiplayer shooter.

Kotaku reports that Pioneer is still in development, but the original vision of a non-violent space exploration game has been scrapped. Instead, it's been re-imagined as a co-op multiplayer alien shooter that is being developed using Rainbow Six's Anvil game engine. It will reportedly retain some features of the original Pioneer.

The mysterious space-themed video game was initially revealed in a side mission in Watchdogs 2 that had players break into an in-game version of Ubisoft's San Francisco offices to find a theoretical E3 trailer of Pioneer. The meta nature of it all generated a buzz around the game, but earlier this month it was thought that the project was canceled after former employees took to Twitter.

My Time at Portia Review

As my tiny boat sailed into the equally tiny port of the city-state of Portia, I couldn't help but look beyond the small town and toward a decrepit tower looming over its peaceful villagers; I wanted to go there, and it didn't take too long before I did. My Time at Portia is perhaps one of the most pleasant post-apocalyptic games out there, every part of it full of potential and an interesting sense of optimism. You'll find it in the goals and accomplishments of its people, and in My Time at Portia's design as a whole. It teases unreachable treasures off in the distance and lists items with parts I haven't yet encountered, letting me know there is something new still waiting for me. After playing over 65 hours, I'm still finding more to explore and build in My Time at Portia. This town sim with an emphasis on building and resource management (and some RPG elements thrown in) is a fun adventure that, despite its flaws, I had a hard time putting down.

Total War: Three Kingdoms Is a Riveting Ancient-Chinese Drama

Liu Bei, the hero of the loosely historical epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, is both a very obvious and very odd protagonist for a Total War game. On one hand, he's generally portrayed as the hero. The righteous, noble scion of the rightful dynasty looking to hold together the collapsing Han Empire. On the other hand, his journey through the first part of the story is utterly different from how most Total War games progress, entering and leaving the service of other warlords, gaining and losing his base of power, and eventually ending up hundreds of miles away from his starting position in Northeastern China. As it turns out, the Three Kingdoms campaign has a plan for telling the tale of this unorthodox rise to power.

Announced by Resident Evil on Twitter, these stories will arrive for free starting on February 15 and will put you in the shoes of a gunshop owner (Robert Kendo), the mayor's daughter, and a soldier in three episodes - "No Time to Mourn," "Runaway, and "Forgotten Soldier."

PSA: This Is the Last Week to Unlock Smash Bros. Ultimate's Piranha Plant for Free

It's the last week to unlock Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's free DLC character, Piranha Plant, and here's what you need to know to ensure you'll get the potted fighter.

To obtain the fighter for free, simply purchase the game physically or digitally before January 31, 2019. If you bought a physical copy of the game, you'll have to redeem its My Nintendo points by pressing the + button on the game's icon on Switch's menu screen, scroll down to "My Nintendo Rewards Program" and choose "Earn Points." This will send an e-mail to the address your account is attached to. If you bought digitally, this will happen automatically.

If you've already done this, there should be a code to redeem Piranha Plant in your inbox, but if you haven't, do so within the next three days to ensure you will - and be careful not to toss the message into the trash. If it doesn't arrive right away, don't worry: The code itself will be valid through June 2019. Redeem the code through the Nintendo eShop, but know that the character isn't set to arrive until February 2019.

Who Is Now Making Metroid Prime 4 at Retro Studios?

Earlier today, Nintendo announced work on Metroid Prime 4 would be starting "from the beginning," with development duties being handed back to original trilogy developer Retro Studios. With the development clock reset, the wait for the series' already-long-awaited fourth entry has presumably been multiplied, leading to widespread disappointment among increasingly impatient fans.

Despite the disappointment, many seem to be taken with Nintendo's transparency and excited by the thought of the series going back to Retro. And while the prospect of that homecoming is understandably exciting, it's been over a decade since Retro last released a Metroid Prime game, which raises an important question: Exactly who is taking over development of Metroid Prime 4?

Metroid Prime 4 and Other Games That Rebooted and Passed Hands

Earlier today, Nintendo announced that development on Metroid Prime 4 was restarting from the beginning and that Retro Studios, the developer behind the original Metroid Prime trilogy of games, would be helping with development. While this is surprising news, it's hardly the first time a game has started development under one team or director and been rebooted and developed by another.

We decided to take a stroll down development hell memory lane and compile a list of seven games that have famously been rebooted and passed hands during development.

Slay the Spire Review

Slay the Spire is one of those games where I found myself sitting alone at my desk just giggling as I played. Not because it's exceptionally funny – though its well-written encounters can be that – but because some combo of cards that had chanced its way into my hand would just go off, and the result was an absolute thrill. I couldn't help but laugh because, win or lose, that combo may never show up again. But boy, was it a blast in the moment.

Here's a genre mix you probably haven't seen before: Slay the Spire is a deckbuilding roguelike dungeon crawler. Don't mistake it for a deckbuilding game like Hearthstone or Magic: The Gathering; instead, you pick one of three varied but equally exciting characters with unique card pools and start with a super basic deck. As you work your way up the Spire, you'll fight increasingly difficult monsters to acquire a randomized selection of new cards that slowly build your deck into something better.

EA Working to Fix Anthem Demo Server Issues

EA is working to fix the server issues that are currently impacting Anthem's VIP demo.

The Punisher Villain Jigsaw Explained

Netflix's The Punisher: Season 1 wrapped up with the badly disfigured Billy Russo -- ex-friend of Frank Castle -- clinging to life in a hospital bed and silently vowing revenge against Castle, locking him in as the villain Jigsaw in Season 2.

And now with Season 2 of the Netflix show debuting, here's everything you need to know about Jigsaw and why he's managed to stay the one recurring thorn in the Punisher's side all these years.

Jigsaw Explained: The Basics

Given that the Punisher's entire modus operandi is killing criminals in brutal and spectacular fashion, it makes sense that his rogues gallery is pretty small compared to the likes of Spider-Man or Iron Man. Yet somehow, Billy Russo has managed to survive one encounter after another with Frank Castle, repeatedly cheating death and returning to exact vengeance on his most hated enemy once again.

Red Dead Online: Free Gold and Gun Rush Fixes in Latest Update

Rockstar announced today an update for Red Dead Online aimed at addressing some matchmaking issues in the recently-added Gun Rush mode, as well as promising more free Gold Bars to players along with other upcoming changes to the multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Gun Rush, a more traditional Battle-Royale-style game mode than the "Make it Count" mode that first launched in RDOnline's Showdown Series', is supposed to host up to 32 players per match - but many players have been game lobbies with half of that or less. "We identified a few matchmaking issues that we are continually working to address," reads the post on Rockstar's Newswire. "We've since added some minor improvements that should help generate fuller lobbies and we will add more fixes in upcoming title updates. Gun Rush is best experienced with as many competitors as possible, so if you had any issues with smaller lobbies last week, we strongly encourage you to give it another go this weekend as we are already regularly seeing much fuller matches on both PS4 and Xbox One."

Hearthstone: Discussing the Early Nerfs and the Rise of Hunter with Team 5

Hearthstone's most recent expansion – Rastakhan's Rumble – hit the game on December 4, introducing 135 new cards and a number of cool thematic, and mechanical, touches. Now, when a new set drops, players typically have at least a couple of months of play before any adjustments (aka nerfs) are made to cards. This time, however, Team 5 surprised the community with a lightning fast patch only two weeks later, addressing a host of older cards that were proving problematic, including nerfs to Nourish and Wild Growth - two cards that have been included in almost every Druid deck since Hearthstone was in beta.

The changes made a massive difference to the game, drastically reducing the power and popularity of Druid, while also bringing Odd Paladin down a notch and nuking Kingsbane Rogue and Shudderwock Shaman. Now that the dust has settled, and we've welcomed our new Hunter overlords, I caught up with Lead Final Designer Dean Ayala to chat about the timing of the changes and the subsequent health of the game.

Once the beta for Survival play begins, players will be able to choose between this or the current style which is being dubbed Adventure mode. Survival will include the same events, quests, and stories as Adventure mode and you can use your existing Fallout 76 characters or create new ones. 18% of Developers Are Reportedly Working on Next-Gen Games

According to a recent report, about 18 percent of developers are working on next-gen games in some form.

This data comes from GDC's State of the Game Industry 2019 report, which polled nearly 4,000 developers, giving an indicative, but not perfectly accurate, look at what many developers around the world are up to. Specifically, about 16 percent of developers said they are working on games for both existing and unannounced platforms, while only 2 percent said they are working exclusively on unannounced platforms.

Naturally, this leaves the majority of developers working on currently announced platforms, as 46 percent of respondents said they are making games exclusively for existing platforms, and the rest said they didn't know at this time. Naturally, with no next-gen consoles having been officially unveiled, it makes sense that most developers are focusing on the current generation.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Review

Some of my fondest childhood gaming memories are of being wowed by the first Kingdom Hearts and its recreation of Disney worlds I knew from my favorite animated movies and shows. But even viewed through the rose-tinted glasses of 17 years worth of nostalgia, those memories pale in comparison to Kingdom Hearts 3's colorful, varied combat and huge, lovingly detailed levels. Square Enix's long-awaited conclusion to its beloved action-RPG trilogy is so satisfying in its gameplay evolutions that it makes me feel like a kid again, even if its story resolutions don't think far outside the toy box.

This new set of movie-quality Disney worlds are almost all delights to explore. The sheer amount of treasures to collect and hidden Mickey emblems to discover really highlights the scale and detail of each world. They also introduce some fun gameplay options, including the chance to control toy mechs and even pilot your own ship on the high seas.
