Some Pokémon Sword And Shield Fans Are Skeptical

The veil has finally been lifted on the eighth generation of Pokémon games, dubbed Pokémon Sword and Shield. The reveal was a big moment for the series, as it marks the first time a mainline Pokémon title has appeared on the Switch. The promise of a new region to explore, new Pokémon to find, and new mysteries to unravel is more than enough to get us excited, even this early on. Fans are already pouring over the new starter characters and deciding what allegiances they'll be making, designing fan art, and coming up with memes and jokes as they indulge in all the new details the trailer revealed to us.

As the Nintendo Direct showed us the games in action, they were clearly every bit the Pokémon we know and love. But are they too familiar? While it's too early to tell just how unique a mainline Pokémon experience Sword and Shield will be on a current generation Nintendo console, especially after just one short trailer, some of the more critical sentiments online bring up a few good points.

Opinion: Video Games Still Have a Way to Go with Black Avatars

I've been a gamer for almost three decades, but I've been black my entire life. When I started gaming on my first Atari 2600 in 1982, the thought of having characters who looked like me -- in stories relevant to my background or culture -- was the furthest thing from my mind.

In '82, I was obsessed with roping pixelated cattle on Stampede and dodging crocodiles with Pitfall Harry in Pitfall. In 2019,  I find myself confused as to why there hasn't been a huge amount of progress in black representation in video games. From the lack of black protagonists in triple A titles to the uneasy fact that black avatars always play second fiddle to white ones --  I have to pay almost $10 just to have a black avatar represent me in a free-to-play game like Guns of Glory -- the slow progress is puzzling.

Is a Borderlands 3 Reveal Imminent? Gearbox Teases 'Never-Before-Seen Reveals'

Gearbox Software is holding a main theater show at PAX East 2019, teasing "never-before-seen reveals" at the event. Is it possible Borderlands 3 could be one of these reveals?

Per the official PAX East 2019 schedule, Gearbox is holding its main theater show during the first day of the event, March 28. In the show's description, it says "This is your opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Gearbox Software and Gearbox Publishing, along with the latest news and updates from the makers of Borderlands, Battleborn, Brothers in Arms, and more!  We will have never-before-seen reveals, exclusives, and surprises, so don't miss out!"

Opinion: The Division 2 Has the Opportunity to Capitalize on Anthem's Shortcomings

When The Division 2 was first announced to be coming out a month after Anthem at E3 2018, I remember thinking the familiar-looking sequel to 2016's original would have a hard time stealing the spotlight from the flashy and (potentially) innovative sci-fi shared-world shooter. Now Anthem is out, and after 40+ generally underwhelming hours with it, I feel the opposite is true. Anthem's combat is fun, and I have high hopes for the future, but the fact remains that too much of its meaningful multiplayer gameplay and progression was hidden behind its repetitive and weirdly lonely quest grind. With this all-too-common shared-world shortcoming fresh in players' minds, Massive Entertainment is in a unique position to showcase what lessons it's learned from nearly three years of post-launch support on The Division.

Opinion: Anthem May Have Its Problems, but Its NPCs Are Fantastic

Coming away from Anthem, I constantly hear people talking about how it makes them feel like Iron Man; you get to zoom around in a powerful suit and blast away enemies. I also hear about how it's not quite living up to expectations, at least not at launch, but you can read more about that in IGN's review. But when I step away from Anthem, what I'm excited to write home about are the great characters hanging around in Fort Tarsis and all of the world-building collectibles scattered about. Did you know that the actors behind Fix-It Felix, Louise Belcher, and Charles Boyle all lent their talents to characters in Anthem? Did you know they also have their own short storylines?

BioWare Addresses Anthem Loot Fan Concerns With Update

BioWare is making various changes to the loot systems in Anthem, and has detailed much of what will be tweaked.

Revealed through an official Reddit post, BioWare lead producer Ben Irvo described changes that are coming to inscriptions, level 30 drop tables and masterwork crafting material requirements. These changes are planned to go live on February 28 or March 1.

Inscriptions are modifiers on items that can grant various improvements while out on expeditions, but not all listed inscriptions are useful. Bonuses can impact health, damage, armor and more, but when an inscription that boosts physical damage is applied to a fully elemental weapon, it's effectively useless. These ineffective inscriptions are officially going away, allowing for generally better and more effective loot to be acquired.

Halo Infinite Will Be a 'Spiritual Reboot' For the Franchise

Halo Infinite will be a "spiritual reboot" for the Halo franchise, according to 343 Industries. In this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered, Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Bonnie Ross, head of 343 Industries, and discussed the development of Halo Infinite, among many other topics (watch the full interview below).

While Halo Infinite is, effectively, Halo 6, the team at 343 Industries is bringing their experience with the entire Halo franchise to bear in developing the new game, which aims to recapture what makes Halo such an iconic franchise. "We're kind of calling it a 'spiritual reboot,'" Ross said, "That's kind of how we talk about it."

According to Ross, 343 had "great learning moments" with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the multiplayer suite in Halo 4, and the approach to REQ packs and free maps in Halo 5 multiplayer, and the studio has been keeping those moments in mind while crafting Halo Infinite.

Here's How the Alien: Isolation Digital Series Got Started

In 2014, developer Creative Assembly released Alien: Isolation, a survival-horror game set 15 years after Ellen Ripley destroyed the Nostromo in the 1979 film. Five years after its debut, the game's story about Amanda Ripley is being expanded with a new digital series using a combination of new animations and original cinematic cutscenes from the game.

The game -- and now the series -- centers on Ellen's daughter, Amanda, who is searching for what really happened to her mother. When the Nostromo's flight recorder is discovered by a deep-space salvage team, Amanda journeys to Sevastopol Station, which leads her on a terrifying adventure filled with deadly aliens and murderous androids. Ghost Giant Wants to Blend Slapstick and Sadness

I wouldn't say it's the best piece of VR content I've played, but certainly my most fondly remembered is a scene during PlayStation Worlds' 'The London Heist' where you're forced to sit down in a pub while an East End mob boss just talks at you for ages. I love it because, while he drones on about someone called French Tony, the game just stops paying attention to what you're doing. You're at this table with a lighter, a cigar, a phone and more, and no one tells you can't just throw them at this guy. So you do. I've spent more time than I'd care to admit laughing as I bounce that phone off his forehead, or pretend to set fire to his groin. It's a pure, inconsequential act of messing about. I love it.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Passes 10 Million Copies Sold

Horizon: Zero Dawn, which is celebrating its second anniversary today, has officially sold "well over" 10 million copies worldwide.

Via the PlayStation Blog, Guerrilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst revealed the number, saying "The idea that we were able to bring Aloy's journey to so many players is astounding. We've been deeply moved by the enormous amount of fan creations you've posted online, as well as the heartfelt letters you've sent sharing your favorite moments from Aloy's journey."

Along with announcing this sales milestone, Hulst took the opportunity to reveal little-known details about the development of the game. He revealed that prototyping gameplay elements began as far back as 2010, when most of the studio was still finishing Killzone 3, and because they didn't yet have an in-game model for Aloy, they used the model for Jammer, an intruder pilot from Killzone 3, in early testing phases of the game.

Ape Out Review

Ape Out is Hotline Miami on an intense diet of bananas and Buddy Rich records; a top-down simian splatterfest set to a superb soundtrack of jazzy drums and crashing cymbals, bundled into an extremely elegant and cool package. Blending elements of old-timey film and vinyl with a sharp, bold 2D aesthetic and bucketloads of blood, Ape Out is striking to look at and properly addictive to play.

The premise is simple: The apes are in, and they need to be out. That's where we come in, steering these simians to an exciting escape through four short but regularly tough chapters, plus a fun epilogue with a slight twist. The location might be a shady research lab or a labyrinthine container ship and its nearby port, but the objective is constant: sprint to the exit, smash anything you can, and slaughter everyone in the way.

Let's go through them.

The next Hearthstone year will kick off with the next Standard format rotation - when the three oldest sets leave the game (in this case Journey to Un'Goro, Knights of the Frozen Throne and Kobolds & Catacombs) and the first new set of the year is released. That set hasn't been revealed yet, but we do know that when rotation happens we'll leave the Year of the Raven and enter the Dragon. The Year of the Dragon, that is.

Judgment Really Is Yakuza + Ace Attorney

It was very easy to look at Judgment's reveal, and lazily decide that this was Yakuza with Ace Attorney dropped in. I know I did. The thing is, having played the game's opening 2 hours, that doesn't feel like a lazy comparison - it's just a correct one.

In its component parts, this is a Yakuza game. We're back in that series' ever-evolving Kamurocho setting (now updated to be an uncanny take on real-life Tokyo's Kabukichō district as of 2018), filled as it always is with neon distractions and strangers with strange requests.

It's as beautiful as Yakuza 6 but, crucially, Judgment's Kamurocho felt more alive in my time in it. The open world map is once again densely seasoned with shops, mini-games and arcades, and I'm assured that the meatier side activities that made Yakuza 0 such an enormous prospect will make an appearance along the way. If you want a quintessentially Yakuza anecdote, I took a break from heading to speak to a powerful gang member to spend 10 minutes playing a Kamurocho-themed parody of House of the Dead.

How Black Women Made The Sims 4 Their Own

Since The Sims entered the video game market in 2000 on the PC, it has defied easy categorization. Designed to be a mix of an architectural simulator and a high-tech doll-house, The Sims' release marked some of the most extensive customization in a video game at the time. All iterations of The Sims since have continued the trend. There is no definitive story mode or sense of linearity; the draw is in the details. Your sim pays their bills, cleans themselves, eats, and remembers if they had a sour social interaction with another sim. Players have a great deal of freedom to guide their sims in whatever way they wish. Whether that's toward success -- through wealth, fame, family, popularity, a stylish vampire coven, or unbeatable cooking skills -- or death. You can kill your sims in progressively stranger ways (because, at some point, we've all put our sims in a pool and removed the ladder to observe as nature takes its course).

Pokemon Sword and Shield: Every Pokemon Confirmed So Far

Earlier today, Nintendo, in collaboration with The Pokémon Company and Game Freak, officially revealed Pokémon Sword and Shield, giving fans their first looks at the eighth generation of Pokémon.

In addition to revealing Sword and Shield's three starters, today's Direct featured roughly one minute of game footage, highlighting 13 other Pokémon that'll inhabit the new region of Galar. Click through the gallery below, or scroll to the bottom of this page, to see which 16 Pokémon have, so far, been confirmed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch RPGs.

While not confirmed, it's safe to assume Sword and Shield will also include the evolutionary families of the Pokémon seen above. If so, that would add the likes of Raichu and Snorlax, among others, to the roster. Assuming Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble each evolve twice, as is standard with starter Pokémon, that would bring the current creature count to 37.

Halo 4 Originally Pitched As Xbox One Launch Title

Halo 4, which launched on Xbox 360 in November 2012, was originally pitched as a launch title for Xbox One. In this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered (see the full episode below), Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Bonnie Ross, head of 343 Industries, and discussed the history (and alternate histories) of the Halo franchise.

When Ross originally pitched Halo 4, it was set to be a launch title for Xbox One, but when it was decided the game would launch as an "end of life-cycle" Xbox 360 title, a new plan was formed. Halo games take a minimum of three years to build, according to Ross, and moving Halo 4 away from the Xbox One release window created a gap in the launch portfolio of the new console.

SteamWorld Quest Is a Card Game RPG as Fiendish as It Is Lovely

There's something inherently likeable about the SteamWorld series. Its hand-drawn sprites, or sheer commitment to cheeriness or unerring focus on a single, tight, mechanical design stretched to game length – one or all of these will tug a smile from players' cold hearts eventually, no matter the game. The side-effect is that the whole SteamWorld brand has given developer Image & Form the enviable opportunity to consistently try new things, while still attracting a captive audience.

2013's breakout Steamworld Dig, don't forget, was the second game to bear the moniker, swapping the DSiWare original's Tower Defence for procedurally generated platforming. Then we got Heist, which somehow wrestled the XCOM model into two dimensions, and added a weird fascination with collectible hats. Even Dig 2, the series' first full sequel, made major changes, swapping those procedural maps for a meticulously designed experience, now prizing skilled play over the original's material grinding.

We'll be showing off more of Cage on KombatKast, NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat show, airing live on all IGN channels today (Wednesday, February 27) at 1pm PT/4pm ET. Be sure to tune in here on IGN.com, YouTube.com/IGN, Twitch.tv/IGN, or Mixer.com/IGN.

Devotion Review

Some horror games offer little more than cheap jump-scares and buckets of gore, but Devotion is the kind of psychological horror with the potential to keep you thinking for weeks after you've beaten it. It's expertly-paced and doesn't stick around long enough for its mechanical simplicity to overstay its welcome, but in that three hours delivers a powerfully unsettling story. And it does it all without ever having a single fully animated character on screen for more than a few seconds.

In Devotion, you take on the role of screenwriter Du Feng Yu as he experiences a surreal journey through the past in order to unravel the threads of what happened to his wife and daughter. Similar to other first-person horror games, like P.T., Devotion mostly takes place in the family's modest apartment home. It's a choice of setting that makes room for excellent character development as you discover mementos and items across multiple years within the home, effectively telling the family's story.

How Xbox Game Pass on Switch Benefits Microsoft, Nintendo, and Players

The rumor that Microsoft's Game Pass service could make its way onto the Nintendo Switch came as a shock. It would make for an unprecedented change in the gaming landscape, marking a new era of partnerships in a traditionally segmented industry.

But with Microsoft already letting slip its plans to bolster this relationship with the possibility of Xbox Live coming to Nintendo Switch, a deeper partnership could hugely benefit both companies involved and what players can expect for years to come.

Overkill's the Walking Dead Now Canceled for Consoles

While a week ago it seemed Overkill's The Walking Dead was still set for release on PS4 and Xbox One, Skybound Entertainment, overseer of The Walking Dead license, has now announced the game will no longer be coming to consoles, and support for it on PC will be discontinued.

In a statement sent to IGN, Skybound confirmed it has ended its contract with Starbreeze Studios "and will discontinue all efforts on Overkill's The Walking Dead.

The company's full statement reads:

As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on OVERKILL'S THE WALKING DEAD. Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional Co-op Action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately OVERKILL'S THE WALKING DEAD did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised. We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.

Nintendo Direct Predictions: Pokemon Gen 8, Starters, and Region Reveal

We're finally getting a Pokemon Direct for the first time in more than a year on February 27 at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET / 2 p.m. GMT and February 28 at 1 a.m. AEDT (sorry Australia.) While we don't know for sure that it will focus on the core RPG Pokemon title for Nintendo Switch, why else have a Pokemon Direct if Nintendo isn't going to discuss the incredibly highly anticipated Generation 8? Yeah, we're rolling with that. Here's what we expect (and hope for) from tomorrow's Pokemon Direct.

If we can rely on any single detail being revealed in the February 2019 Pokemon Direct, it's the name of the Generation 8 Pokemon Nintendo Switch games. We first heard about the Gen 8 Pokemon games back at E3 2017, and we learned in May 2018 they would be arriving worldwide in Fall 2019. It's about time we learned, at the very least, the name and logo of the new games releasing this year. We got at least that much from the 2016 Pokemon Direct for Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Games Made By Black Developers You Should Look Out For

Over the last decade, the video game industry has seen a rise in prominent indie games on platforms like Steam and Xbox Live Arcade. It signaled to developers everywhere that ideas could be created by nearly anyone wanting to make them. Black developers have taken advantage of this as well, home-brewing games that feature their own takes on various genres. African Americans may only make up only 2.5 percent of all video game developers, but that doesn't mean they're not putting time and effort towards building their own development studios.

In celebration of Black History Month, we look at games created by Black developers that are out now (or soon) that you definitely want to keep on your radar.

Devotion Was Removed From Steam for a 'QA Check'

Red Candle Games has put an end to any speculation that its Taiwanese horror game, Devotion was banned from Steam following a backlash from Chinese gamers - but it was temporarily removed because of that backlash.

The Taiwanese horror game caused controversy earlier this week when players reported spotting a reference to a Winnie-the-Pooh meme mocking Chinese President Xi Jinping. It subsequently disappeared from Steam, leading some believe it had been banned from the platform.

However, in a Facebook statement, the developer explained that it removed its title to "have another complete QA check," and ensure that "no other unintended materials" were left in the game. It also cites "technical issues" that caused "unexpected crashes," as another reason for the removal.

5 Awesome Black Video Game Characters

Change is positive.

It feels like slowly, but surely over the past few years, publishers have finally started to realize the value of trying to inject their properties with new perspectives based around diverse characters, casts, and crews. A few developers like Long Hat House with Dandara, Arkane Studios with Dishonored, and Respawn Entertainment with this month's Apex Legends have specifically included prominent black characters, and proven that it's not hard to do.

Seeing blackness in-game is finally becoming normal, which is a stark contrast from when I was a kid and only able to make my Animal Crossing villager look like me by having him tan every day. It was a Jersey Shore nightmare cycle. Now kids get to bop their friends in Smash Ultimate as dark-skinned villagers who sport fly haircuts and don't over-tan. We're getting somewhere.

Borderlands Developer Was Considered for Halo 4

Borderlands developer Gearbox Software was originally considered to create Halo 4. In this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered, Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Bonnie Ross, head of 343 Industries, and discussed the history (and alternate histories) of the development of Halo 4, among many other topics.

After Halo's original development studio, Bungie, split with Microsoft, there was a discussion at Xbox about what to do with the Halo franchise. While the ending of Halo 3 was ambiguous enough to serve as a finale for the series, Halo also took place in an incredibly well-realized universe, one which was rich enough to serve as the setting for many more games, should Microsoft find the right studio to make them.

Counterproductively, though, it works against that urge with some tweaks and new additions which take the focus off of that loop of self-improvement and put it instead on repetitive challenges and discouraging PvP competition.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall Is a Sci-Fi 4X with XCOM-Like Tactical Battles

Of all the varied visions of the future we see in games, some of my favorites have always been the ones that include dinosaurs. Age of Wonders: Planetfall doesn't skimp on these Cretaceous throwbacks, and it's all the better for it. Combining a detailed 4X campaign layer with XCOM-like tactical battles, Triumph's first foray into sci-fi has a lot of elements that will look familiar to a turn-based strategy veteran. But the way they're assembled is not quite like anything I've played before.

The backdrop for all this hex-based expanding, exploring, and exterminating is that there used to be a grand, galactic government that ruled over settled space peacefully, and everything was great. You know, unless you were a slave. Every shining beacon of spaceborne civilization has to have a rotting, decadent core after all. But a couple hundred years back, that all fell apart and left scattered groups of ragtag survivors to pick up the pieces and try to make something with them.

Stellaris: Console Edition Review

If you asked me what traditionally PC-centric genre would be least likely to work with a gamepad, a complex grand strategy game of Stellaris' breed would be near the top of the list. But much to my surprise, the team behind the Console Edition of Paradox's space opera sandbox have managed to do a really admirable job translating the controls. Coming from the PC version, however, I can't help but notice that they've ported a long out-of-date version of Stellaris that's still full of major gameplay shortcomings that have been solved for a while now on that side of the fence – and man, is it hard to go back.

If you've never even looked at Stellaris before, there are plenty of reasons to get excited about Console Edition. It's one of the most ambitious and innovative space 4X games to come out in the last decade. You're given fine control over designing your empire's government and primary species using a variety of flavorful and impactful trait choices, allowing you to be anything from an iron-fisted dictatorship of bloodthirsty turtles to a peaceful technocracy led by some sort of worm creature whose underlying biology I don't even want to guess at. The portraits you can pick from include enough weird, memorable, and sometimes hilarious aliens to fill the Mos Eisley Cantina a few times over.

Crackdown 3: Why a Good Deal Doesn't Make a Game Score Better

Any time we publish a review that takes a strong stance – positive or negative – on an anticipated game, we get a lot of feedback from our community. Beyond the unavoidable differences of opinion on the quality of a given game (there's never been a review in any publication that everyone agrees with), there are interesting philosophical questions that arise around how we make our evaluations.

In the case of last week's Crackdown 3 review, two often-debated topics were raised: Why is a sequel that's so similar to a well-regarded original now thought of as uninteresting, and what consideration should be given to a game that can be played for next to no cost? These are questions we actually spend quite a lot of time thinking about, and so now seems like a good time to shed light on how we approach those questions and the reasoning behind it so that you can have a better idea of how we review.

This is part of a larger organizational restructuring within NCSOFT in the west, but the Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 game services will not be affected, nor is any upcoming game content canceled."

It's barely been two weeks since Apex Legends took the world by storm, and not only are many people playing the game — it amassed more than 25 million players in its first week alone-- but even more are watching others play the game. What $100 Gets You in Apex Legends

If you've been playing Apex Legends and have yet to part with any of your money, we've saved you the hassle of trying to figure out what's what by spending 100 dollars in Respawn's battle royale shooter.

Because Apex Legends is free-to-play, microtransactions are inevitably going to be a part of its ecosystem. For consumers who are unclear with how mictrotransactions work in Apex Legends, don't worry:  all of them are 100% cosmetic, which means you can't get an edge in the game if you fork out cash.

You can actually see every unlockable cosmetic if you head over to the legend and armory tab. There are over 1900 total items with 4 tiers of rarity: common, rare, epic, and legendary. Players will have unlocked 45 total apex boxes once they reach level 100 and with 3 items per loot box, that means you are getting access to 135 free items.

Ben Mendelsohn's Captain Marvel Villain Explained

The Captain Marvel movie will include several firsts for the MCU, like being set in the '90s and featuring a two-eyed Nick Fury. Perhaps the most notable new development, however, is the inclusion of the Skrulls as the main villains of the film. And they'll be led by Ben Mendelsohn, no less! One Avenger against an entire cosmic empire? We like those odds.

Mendelsohn (Rogue One) plays the Skrull leader, Talos, in the highly anticipated Brie Larson film. But who are the Skrulls, and why do they have such a bone to pick with Captain Marvel? Let's break down everything you need to know about this troublesome group of Marvel aliens. (Also be sure to read about how Marvel Studios can even use the Skrulls, who were long believed to fall under 20th Century Fox's domain as far as their film rights.)
