Games for Your Inner Historian

I love history. I have historical books, movies and texts on every shelf at home and a big fat history degree on my wall that's mostly useful for… well, articles like this.

Being a history nerd also means that when a game takes inspiration from a particular historical epoch, it makes me all the more interested. I know that history isn't for everyone, and not every game needs a solid historical basis, but I've always seen games as a way to explore thoughts and ideas in a way that no other medium can - and not everyone wants to sit through a three-hour lecture on the Russian revolution.

So let's take a look at a handful of games and game series that have built an incredible experience on top of a solid historical underpinning. To be clear, these aren't experiences that will give you a totally realistic depiction of a time period, but they do give you some of the flavour of the age; whether that's culture, politics, warfare or any number of other elements. And yes, because I can't resist I'll also point you in the direction of further information to complement - or build upon - what you might get out of each game.

Sega Announces Four New Games Based on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Sega has announced four new games based on the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

The first of these is titled Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game, which will be released in Japan and Asia this summer for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, and worldwide in 2020. Sega describes this as "a fun-filled sports action game where you can create your own avatar and compete in Olympic Games events with people around the world." Rather than featuring Sonic or other characters, it appears to have a more realistic – if simplistic – art style.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will then hit Nintendo Switch during winter 2019. From the footage and screenshots released, it appears to be similar to previous Mario & Sonic titles release by Sega at previous Olympics, with a collection of mini games themed around different sports, and will make use of the Joy-Con features. As with the Rio Olympics title, there will also be an Arcade Edition launching at a similar time, which will use physical inputs such as jumping.

Bus Simulator for Consoles Is Like Video Game ASMR

Of the many games I played at PAX East 2019, I didn't expect Bus Simulator would be one of my favorites, but yet, here we are.

Previously available only to PC gamers, Bus Simulator comes to consoles later this year, and I had a chance to try it out here in Boston. I've played other simulator games like Farming Simulator and Train Simulator, so I had an inkling of what to expect.

If you're unfamiliar, Bus Simulator is exactly what its name promises, but even more in-depth that it would lead you to believe. Yes, you drive busses. In fact, there are dozens of real-life, officially licensed bus models to drive, but it's more than just driving from stop to stop.

There's a story here: the fictitious city in which Bus Simulator is set doesn't have good public transportation. It's up to you to help rebuild the infrastructure for a thriving public transportation system through–you guessed it–driving busses.

MLB The Show 19: Final Review

Sony's MLB The Show series has been coasting on its past success for a few years now, but the 2019 version has finally broken that slump by introducing some substantially improved modes on top of the usual fine-tuning and polish. Yes, the core gameplay is very familiar and Franchise Mode remains nearly identical to last year's, but Road to the Show serves as the culmination of years of improvements and a new mode, March to October, is a novel way to experience the MLB season.

One of the areas that sees the most improvement in 2019 is defensive play, which has often been considered a weaker part of the MLB The Show's gameplay in recent years. In the past, issues like animation oddities and a lack of player variety made me eager to get back up to bat. Most of these problems have been addressed this year, most obviously because color-coded fielding icons now clearly indicate how good a player is at fielding his position. Gold indicates an elite fielder, while gray and blue icons let you know you might be dealing with an error-prone defensive liability.

Bethesda Will Not Discuss The Elder Scrolls 6, Starfield at E3 2019

Bethesda has confirmed that it will not be discussing either The Elder Scrolls 6 or Starfield at E3 2019.

During the Bethesda Game Days stream at PAX East 2019, Todd Howard cautioned fans hoping for more details on two of the most anticipated games in the industry that they would need to wait a bit longer.

"Before everyone asks, please be patient," Howard said. "It's going to be a long time. It's not something we're going to be talking about at e3, either of those games, this year. Patience, please."

Both The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield were announced at E3 2018, although very little details were given of either except that these would be brand-new 'next-gen' games, one of a few we already believe are in development for the new systems.

Valve Admits Artifact Has ‘Deep-Rooted Issues’

Valve has acknowledged its Dota 2-themed digital card game Artifact has "deep-rooted issues," and has committed to fixing them.

In a new post on the Artifact site, Valve stated bluntly that "Artifact represents the largest discrepancy between our expectations for how one of our games would be received and the actual outcome."

While the response to Artifact was generally positive, complaints rose around its monetization model and lack of progression mechanics. As a result, its player base declined rapidly, and Artifact's average concurrent player count for the last month currently sits at a meager 359 at the time of publishing this.

Dead Cells’ Free Rise of the Giant Update Is for the Fans

Dead Cells newest update, dubbed Rise of the Giant, is out now on Steam and slowly rolling out to consoles, bringing with it a ton of new content to a game that keeps getting better and better with age.

When I filed the IGN Dead Cells review last year, I thought it was one of the best action games I'd ever played, fusing breakneck speed, risk-versus-reward decision-making, and roguelike elements for something unique with an absolute ton of replay value.

And within that perfect storm of difficulty Dead Cells is known for, it's also got an incredible tongue-in-cheek personality and is positively loaded with Easter Eggs that you might not have spotted yet, which helps alleviate some of that brutal atmosphere.

New Big Bads

Presumably, these are the leaders of a Cult known as the Children of the Vault.

Not to be confused with the Marvel Comics group of the same name - are an enemy faction making their official series debut in Borderlands 3, though this isn't their first rodeo in the franchise. The cult actually appeared in the Borderlands: Origins comics way back in 2012, and were also referenced in some DLC for Battleborn, Gearbox's 2016 hero shooter.

Elder Scrolls Online’s Elsweyr Expansion Shakes Things Up

This isn't the first time ESO has visited the beautifully sandy region of Elsweyr (pronounced Elsewhere) since some small zones in the base game let players dip their toes into the area such as Khenarthi's Roost. However, opening up the whole zone for exploration is new. And with this new zone also comes the introduction of dragons into the world of ESO.

The prequel quest should be going live soon and will serve as a direct prelude to the events in Elsweyr (out May 20 on PC and June 4 on consoles), immediately following the Wrathstone DLC's brief narrative. The gist of it all is that some Imperials have invaded the northern region of Elsweyr with a necromancer at their helm and something that the player does may have accidentally awoken dragons under the presumed guise of aiding natives in battle. Naturally, things didn't unfold as intended and now all hell's broken loose.

Tropico 6 Review

There aren't a lot of city builders that let you roleplay a specific type of leader, so I immediately took a liking to the freedom Tropico 6 gives you to do just that. There's nothing stopping you from trying to build a communist paradise where everyone lives in haciendas and banana pickers make as much money as tech executives, or a brutal military dictatorship that only cares about how efficiently human lives can be turned into profitable exports. Nothing, that is, besides an unwieldy economic simulation that can quickly go belly up without giving you easy access to information on how to fix it.

There's a lot going on across the inviting white sand beaches, bungalows, and lush jungle interiors of the latest version of Tropico, which look great except for the waterfalls, which seem lifted out of a 10-year-old game. Despite its relaxing environment, its politicking, trade, and mission systems kept me busier than any of its predecessors as I strived to stay in power and accomplish objectives that would advance me from the colonial era all the way up to the modern day – many of my own making in sandbox mode, as well as pre-made ones in its 15 story missions.

The Top 25 Craziest Finishers in MK History

Mortal Kombat 11 is just around the corner, and it's already shown us some of the nastiest, most brutal fatalities we've ever seen. But brutality isn't everything. Throughout the history of mortal combat, there have been plenty of Fatalities, Friendships, Animalities and more that weren't afraid to get weird with it. From the bizarrely gruesome to the gruesomely bizarre, here are our picks for the 25 craziest finishing moves in MK history.

Spoiler alert: There's a lot of MK 3 in here. That game was wacky.

25. Mortal Kombat 3 - Reptile - Fatality

Even setting aside the fact that in order to swallow his prey, Reptile's head expands by about 500%, the real WTF?! of this finisher is the question of how can a man who's head and vocal chords are currently being digested keep screaming?! Or maybe it's Reptile who's screaming, though that begs the question why we haven't seen his ventriloquist act yet.

Close to the Sun: First Preview

Close to the Sun is such a luxurious-looking game, dripping in faded wealth and shattered dreams, it's hard to believe it was built by a 15 -person team. The comparisons to BioShock it's had leveled at it are far from unfounded - Close to the Sun is also steeped in art deco, set in a dystopian reality at sea, and ruled over by an idealistic madman. But, there are certain things that set it apart. Let's shine some light.

Set in the late 1800s, Close to the Sun sees protagonist Rose on a call to adventure from her sister Ada, who is one of the most prominent scientists aboard the Helius, a giant ship created by inventor and mechanical engineer Nikola Tesla whose wonders are attracting the greatest minds from around the world. This particular dystopia sees Tesla as a successful visionary, able to flex his creative genius without the interference of fellow visionary Thomas Edison, who famously screwed him over in our reality.

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid Review

Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is a great example of how far rock-solid mechanics and strong characters can take a fighting game, even when everything else is working against it. This nostalgia-fest has the look of a free-to-play mobile game, a complete lack of voice acting, a barebones set of modes and features, only nine characters, only five stages, repetitive and generic music, all on top of the stigma of being based off a licensed property not known for having a great video game track record. But against all odds, underneath all of that beats the heart of a fighting system developed with thought, care, and an obvious love for 2D tag fighting games.

Battle for the Grid is a 3-on-3 tag fighter with a four-button combat system consisting of light, medium, heavy, and special attacks, much like Dragon Ball FighterZ. Also, like FighterZ, there are no complicated button inputs for special moves, with every move being performable by pressing a direction and a button. The result is a fighting system that all but removes the executional barrier of entry and focuses instead on fundamentals, which is great because the simplicity of the combat system is complemented by much more complex tag mechanics and a wild array of special moves that will have skilled players mixing opponents up like batter.

Amy Hennig Explains Problem With Players Not Finishing Stories

Amy Hennig, best known for her work as creative director on the Uncharted series, may be one of the most prolific video game storytellers alive, but even she can't make a huge portion of gamers finish her stories. Hennig sat down with editor Ryan McCaffrey on this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered to discuss the issue plaguing narrative-focused games.

"The idea that our medium just makes peace with the fact that most people will never see the whole arc of the story we're telling, that's bizarre to me. The age when we could make games in the non-indie space that are six to eight hours long, don't have any second modes, don't have a live service, multiplayer, they're just about this finite interactive narrative experience that sticks the landing and is memorable, that's a harder and harder sell."

Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered Review

A lot has happened to the Assassin's Creed series in the seven years since Assassin's Creed 3 first came out. It was quickly overshadowed in 2013 by the follow-up, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which remains one of my all-time favorites – but that's in part because of how well AC4 built upon the naval combat concepts introduced by its Colonial predecessor. Since then, our expectations for the series have been changed yet again by the RPG-influenced Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey, which revamped combat control in a way that's hard to go back from. So while I'm glad to say Assassin's Creed 3 Remastered does do a great job bringing the appearance of this 18th-century world and its characters of this 2012 game up to 2019 standards, there's a lot of creakiness to it that even the gameplay tweaks it makes can't entirely smooth out.

Ranking Every Season 1 Legend in Apex Legends

Season 1 of Apex Legends has just launched and with it, a new Legend has entered the arena and there have been slight balance changes to existing legends. This ranking is based on a combination of solo and squad play, and is entirely subjective; the best legend is ultimately the one that you connect most with and that fits your playstyle. But, without further ado, here is our ranking of the Legends in Season 1.

9. Caustic

At the bottom of the list, we have Caustic. The Season 1 balance change adjusted the hitboxes for Caustic, Gibraltar, and Pathfinder but unfortunately, I don't think it's enough. Apex Legends is a game where aggression and evasiveness are rewarded because of the fast-flowing nature of combat, and Caustic still sticks out like a sore thumb. Although his gas traps did receive a buff of a faster cooldown and increased proximity radius, they really only shine in closed off areas and buildings. Skilled Caustic players will block off doors and choke points with their traps, but shooting the base of these canisters will render them useless. If you enjoy setting up ambushes and playing relatively defensively, Caustic is the perfect legend for you, but with the fast pace of Apex Legends and his still large hitbox, I've got Caustic at 9.

9 Licensed Games That Got It Right (Plus 5 That Didn't)

It's no secret that licensed games have a reputation for… let's charitably call it mediocrity. But they're not all soulless tie-ins desperate to capitalize on the success of whatever IP the developer happens to have landed. After all, for every infamous bomb like E.T. or Colonial Marines, there's an Arkham series or The Witcher; and to that end, here are nine licensed games that were actually pretty solid, and five that, well… weren't.

Totally '80s Pinball Machine Black Knight 2000 Gets a Sequel

After 3 decades, the Black Knight is back in Stern Pinball's Black Knight: Sword of Rage. First appearing in the 1980s, the titular Knight may be pinball's greatest adversary, especially in the 1989 sequel where he taunted players with delightfully '80s-sounding robotic callouts and maniacal laughter.

In an upcoming 2019 game revealed today, the Black Knight will take his most prominent place in the game yet, with a massive, animated figure placed prominently in the playfield, thwacking pinballs back at the player with a flail and defending against your shots with a miniature shield.

Check out the first trailer for Black Knight: Sword of Rage below:

The first two Black Knight games were notable for their upper playfields, a raised wooden playfield in the rear of the game accessible via ramps and other methods with its own flipper and set of targets to shoot for.

Detective Comics: The Mystery of the Arkham Knight Begins

Detective Comics celebrated its 1000th issue by introducing the comic book incarnation of the Arkham Knight, and we have our first clues as to the identity of this mysterious villain.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Detective Comics #1000 and the Arkham Knight video game!

The 2015 video game Batman: Arkham Knight first introduced the titular villain, revealing him to be Batman's disgruntled ex-sidekick Jason Todd. This issue marks the debut of the Arkham Knight in DC's traditional comic book continuity, and all signs point to a completely different person taking up that mantle this time.

Jedi Knight Meets Metal Gear Rising: Revengence in Action-RPG Warlander

IGN is proud to exclusively reveal the debut title from Clock Drive Games, a sword-fighting dark fantasy action-RPG called Warlander that is inspired by the Jedi Knight series and Metal Gear Rising: Revengence.

Warlander combines story-driven adventure with fast-paced swordplay that will see players literally slicing through enemies, much like Revengence, with a sentient sword that very much acts like a Lightsaber.

"We drew inspiration for Warlander from games such as the classic Jedi Knight series and Metal Gear Rising: Revengence, which we're huge fans of," said Goran Rajsic, creative director for Clock Drive Games. "We struck the perfect balance of sword-fighting gameplay, and in-game progression system, and customizable RPG elements that captured the essence of the genre but also added out own twist to it."

Telling Lies Focuses on a Stolen NSA Hard Drive

Despite the critical acclaim that Her Story received when it launched in 2015, not a lot of games have aped its novel conceit — players explore a story by searching key words spoken during an interview. But developer Sam Barlow has continued evolving the format he created (though later learned had some real-world analogues) with Her Story in Telling Lies, which is set for release this year.

I spoke to Barlow ahead of the debut of Telling Lies' reveal trailer, which you can watch below, about the complexity of a multi-protagonist story, how in some ways the game's structure was a response to Barlow's viewing of Breaking Bad, and just what exactly you'll be investigating in Telling Lies.

Yoshi's Crafted World Review

True to form, Yoshi's Crafted World is exactly what I expected it to be. It's a very enjoyable and delightfully charming Yoshi platformer that doesn't really strive to be much more, like Breath of the Wild did for Zelda, nor does it hone the series' ideas to a razor-sharp edge like Odyssey did for Mario. It's formulaic, and at times that can make it feel as thin as its realistic-looking cardboard sets, but that didn't stop me from having a ton of fun running around them.

Yoshi's Crafted World isn't a tough platformer, so that fun wasn't usually from a sense of overcoming a challenge. In fact, apart from the four levels that unlock at the end of its campaign, most of its 40+ stages pose little threat to complete at all. Enemies are mostly passive, Yoshi's adorable new costumes offer a huge amount of damage protection, and his signature mid-air hover can be chained almost indefinitely, allowing for some extremely forgiving platforming.

6 Things Detective Pikachu Is Already Doing Right

Call me crazy, but I think 2019 might be the year we get the first good video game movie -- And yes, Mortal Kombat is a wacky, stupid, fun time that I've adored since I was eight, seen dozens of times, and own on blu-ray, but if you unironically think it's a genuinely good movie, please please watch more movies.

But now, we're just months away from Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and it looks way better than it has any right to… Could this be the first good video game movie? Here are six choices that might keep this furry flick from being big screen shovelware.

1. A Pikachu, Not THE Pikachu

Detective Pikachu is A Pikachu, but he's not THE Pikachu, the one that's been hanging out with Ash Ketchum for over a thousand episodes of the cartoon show, and he's not even the same Detective Pikachu from the 3DS game released last year who sounded like Danny DeVito, as funny as that would've been.

Generation Zero Review

Conceptually, Generation Zero has a lot of big ideas. Its setting, a 1980s alternate history where robots have taken over the Swedish countryside, is fresh and stylish in its specificity. Though it fits into a clear-cut niche – the co-op survival first-person shooter – it draws clear mechanical inspiration from a range of sources, from PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds to Horizon: Zero Dawn, as well as more directly comparable open-world shooters like Far Cry 5. It is incredibly ambitious, and I really want to be able to tell you that it's among the most exciting games published in 2019.

...But it's not. It's really not. For all its great ideas, only a few of these concepts – namely the art and a spooky 80s mystery vibe – play out as well as you'd hope or expect. From exploration to combat, much of Generation Zero feels out of whack. Enemies can sense your presence from across a field or forest and break up a carefully laid-out ambush in an instant, and too often the resulting chaos is a jerky, janky shootout where the victor is dictated by attrition rather than skill or foresight. Likewise, progress comes slowly and it's often unclear what you should be doing and where you should go. Moreover, all of these problems are compounded by gratuitous glitchiness – just about every kind of bug you can think of, you will likely see roaming rural Sweden. All of these problems blend into an incredibly frustrating grind in which I – whether I was playing alone or as part of a team – constantly felt like I was butting heads with the universe for every measly inch of progress (in a bad way).

Trover Saves the Universe Might Be the Most Profane Game Ever

Trover Saves the Universe is insane. It basically feels like a playable episode of Rick and Morty. The animation style is the same, the humor is the same, and heck, you'll even hear Roiland use both Rick's voice (on certain enemies) and Morty's (Trover himself). I am left to genuinely wonder if the only reason it isn't a Rick and Morty game is because Roiland didn't want to share the profits with Adult Swim and/or he didn't want their corporate approval process slowing him down.

Anyway, all of that is to say that Trover Saves the Universe is hilarious. I don't laugh out loud at games nearly as often as I'd like, and without a doubt, Trover got more audible, involuntary laughter out of me than any game since Matt Stone and Trey Parker's last two South Park RPGs. My demo of Trover – the full game is out on May 31 for PS4 and PSVR – was with Tanya Watson, co-founder and studio director of Roiland's game development house, Squanchtendo. Watson confirmed what I suspected while laughing my way through Trover's first proper mission: that Roiland ad-libbed all of the dialogue. The designers sketched out levels and gameplay based on a high-level outline, and then Roiland came in, played it, and hopped into the VO booth to record lines for literally every conceivable scenario. And he did it on the fly. Think of it as a Curb Your Enthusiasm kind of approach, which is both amazing and difficult to pull off. Roiland and Squanchtendo seem to be well on their way to doing just that.

Control Hands-On Preview: It Feels Good to Break Things

Remedy Entertainment – makers of Max Payne, Alan Wake, and Quantum Break – has never made a bad game, and if my first hands-on with their latest, Control, is any indication, they're not in jeopardy of breaking that streak. In the same way that Max Payne basically forced you to always keep moving, Control does the same – but adds in a bunch of superpowers, a bizarre and compelling setting, and gleefully rips the environment to shreds in the process. My first hands-on with it was everything I hoped for.

As Jesse Faden, the newly appointed head of the mysterious Federal Bureau of Control, you're handed a unique Service Weapon that can transform and upgrade in different, player-controlled ways, and asked to keep the strange forces threatening our world at bay. My demo took place in the Central Research section of The Oldest House – the nickname for the Brutalist-architecture, space-bending building that the Bureau calls home. In it, a hostile force known as The Hiss has begun attacking, meaning you'll see suspended, floating bodies, people frozen in time and space, and aggressive bad guys who seemingly teleport in – some of which have powers like yours.

MLB The Show Review in Progress

While MLB The Show 2019 has its fair share of small improvements across the board to help freshen things up, it also feels like the first substantial improvement in years. Yes, the core gameplay is very familiar and Franchise Mode remains nearly identical to last year's, but Road to the Show serves as the culmination of years of improvements and a new mode, March to October, is a novel way to experience the MLB season.

One of the areas that sees increased improvement in 2019 is defensive play, which has often been considered a weaker part of the MLB The Show's gameplay. In the past, issues like animation oddities and a lack of player variety made me eager to get back up to bat. Most of these problems have been addressed this year.

The cycle of survival, of carrying on the lessons imparted to her, is wired into every fiber of her being. It's what has kept them alive. In the final four episodes of the series started by the now-shuttered Telltale Games and finished by part of the same team (now at Skybound Games) we're asked what happens when Clem and A.J. might no longer need to run and begin to have some semblance of a normal life, and after a bit too much exposition and padding it leaves them in a satisfying place.

How Dark Souls & Sekiro's Maps Double as Spacial Awareness Puzzles

From the ornate architecture of Anor Londo to the gaslit streets of central Yharnam, FromSoftware has a knack for creating truly unforgettable environments. And this tradition continues in their latest action-adventure game, Sekiro, with its Sengoku-era style setting of temples and decrepit castles. But what's so special about these environments isn't just their innate spectacle or their overwhelming atmosphere, but how these areas tend to double as spatial awareness puzzles to test the player.

If you pay attention how FromSoftware constructs its worlds, there's a pattern that quickly starts to emerge -- that is, between the constant cycle of live, die, repeat. Often, at the beginning of an area, the games will present you with an impassable obstacle, usually in the form of an unextended ladder, locked door, or a gate with an item behind it. Then you are tasked with finding your way to the other side of that obstacle without the aid of a map. In fact, second to 'You are Dead', the most commonly used words in FromSoftware's phrasebook are usually ones reserved for taunting players over inaccessible areas and mechanical contraptions that refuse to work unless you operate them from a certain side.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Announced for Release in 2021

Daedalic Entertainment has announced The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a narrative-focused adventure game that will centre on J.R.R. Tolkien's famous tricksy, dual-personality character.

Set to release in 2021, the game will explore events that occur between Gollum's finding of the One Ring and the start of The Lord of the Rings story.

Unlike recent Middle-earth games that draw inspiration from Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, Daedalic's game will based purely on Tolkien's books.

The project comes thanks to a new partnership between Daedalic and Middle-earth Enterprises; the company that owns the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Gollum will also be just the first game produced as part of the deal; further games are being planned.

Amy Hennig's Canceled Star Wars Game Was Meant to Evoke 'Ensemble' Feel of Films

Electronic Arts' history with Star Wars games has been tumultuous to say the least. There may be no better example than the Star Wars game that was being developed by Visceral, the studio behind Dead Space, and famed video game writer Amy Hennig, known for her work on the Uncharted series. On this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered, host Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Amy Hennig to discuss her vision for the unfinished Star Wars game, what she's been doing on her "year off," and more.

Analogue Mega Sg Review

Clone console hardware has come a long way over the past 15 years. What used to be the domain of sketchy shopping mall kiosks offering off-brand NESes claiming to contain 1,000 games (990 of which were strangely named hacks of Super Mario Bros. and Contra, and none of which were legally licensed) has become a booming, legitimate business, thanks in part to the huge success off the NES Classic and Super NES Classic. Analogue Co.'s new Mega Sg—a high-end Sega Genesis clone—arrives amidst heavy competition, and it comes with a fairly steep price tag of $189.99 that anybody looking for a quick and simple hit of nostalgia may find off-putting. What Analogue promises in return, however, is something no other Genesis clone on the market can offer: Total fidelity to the original hardware, with zero barriers to a perfect plug-and-play gaming experience on high-definition and 4K televisions. While it turns out the Mega Sg doesn't quite achieve that lofty goal either, it comes remarkably close and offers the best Genesis experience on the market.

Anthem's New Stronghold Caches Won't Contain Armour

Anthem players are upset following the news that Elysian Stronghold Caches will not contain new armor sets, but will instead feature new vinyls, animations, victory poses, and emotes.

As reported by VG247, some of this confusion occurred following a livestream comment and when some Anthem players tweeted Bioware lead producer Ben Irving and asked when they can expect to be able to earn and/or acquire new armor sets.

Irving originally replied, offering a bit of hope, saying that "Eysian chests should be up next week," which led many players to believe these caches would contain armor sets.

SteamWorld Quest Is a Card Game RPG as Fiendish as It Is Lovely

There's something inherently likeable about the SteamWorld series. Its hand-drawn sprites, or sheer commitment to cheeriness or unerring focus on a single, tight, mechanical design stretched to game length – one or all of these will tug a smile from players' cold hearts eventually, no matter the game. The side-effect is that the whole SteamWorld brand has given developer Image & Form the enviable opportunity to consistently try new things, while still attracting a captive audience.

2013's breakout Steamworld Dig, don't forget, was the second game to bear the moniker, swapping the DSiWare original's Tower Defence for procedurally generated platforming. Then we got Heist, which somehow wrestled the XCOM model into two dimensions, and added a weird fascination with collectible hats. Even Dig 2, the series' first full sequel, made major changes, swapping those procedural maps for a meticulously designed experience, now prizing skilled play over the original's material grinding.

a Second Apex Legend Character Will Hit During Season 1

A second character will arrive in Apex Legends before the end of Season 1, bringing the roster up to 10 Legends.

The news comes from Sony's page for Apex Legends on the PlayStation website, which notes that "two new characters will launch over the course of the season", complete with a full set of cosmetics each.

Developer Respawn had already noted in the Apex Legends roadmap that new characters would arrive each season, but there had been no indication as to how many we could expect. The PlayStation website makes clear, however, that one new Legend will arrive within the next 12 weeks.

Nintendo Set to Release Two New Switch Models

Nintendo is allegedly planning to launch two new versions of the Switch console, potentially as early as this summer.

A report by The Wall Street Journal (which can be read in full on Reddit) claims that Nintendo has an "enhanced" variant of the Switch in development, bolstered with features "targeted at avid videogamers". This will be joined by a cheaper option of the console for casual gamers, with the intent of it acting as a successor to the 3DS.

Rainbow Six Siege in 2019: What's Over The Burnt Horizon

Rainbow Six Siege had something of a rocky start, but Ubisoft's dedication to its multiplayer-only competitive shooter has seen it go from strength to strength. With the launch of Burnt Horizon, Siege embarks on its fourth year of constant improvements — beginning with the addition of Australia (finally).

Here's a look at the year ahead.

A Sunburnt Country

The year kicks off with two new operators and a new map. The map, Outback — or Servo, as the locals call it — is a tightly built two storey arena with an emphasis on destructibility. Hanley's Roadhouse — named for Timothy Hanley, the sole Australian Operator in the original Rainbow Six — demonstrates remarkable growth from the Siege dev team from its outset.

God of War Director Reveals Full Story Behind Famous E3 Demo

In a presentation given during GDC 2019, God of War director Cory Barlog revealed the full story behind the famous E3 2016 demo that debuted the new God of War to the world.

Barlog says the team always knew the game's big reveal would be at E3 2016, though he didn't know if it would simply be a logo, a trailer or a full demo. Nine or 10 months before the show, he decided the demo would take place inside the game's mountain, and pitched this idea to Sony and PR representatives

"About halfway through the pitch I realized 'this is absolute crap.' But I'm still giving the pitch," said Barlog. "So in my mind, I'm starting to think of ways to eject. I start having a few ideas – potentially the beginning of the game, a few visual ideas that are coming up while I'm just running on autopilot on the pitch."

The 5 Biggest Announcements From GDC 2019

Breaking down barriers was a common theme among this year's biggest Game Developers Conference announcements. Google aims to do so on a grand scale, theoretically removing hardware barriers with its Stadia streaming platform, while smaller barriers of exclusivity were torn down in the forms of Cuphead and Quantic Dream's PlayStation library.

With the final day of GDC upon us, we've decided to revisit the week that was and compile a list of the conference's most exciting stories. From the unveiling of Google's gaming initiative to surprise game reveals, here are the five biggest announcements from GDC 2019.

Google Stadia Unveiled

Inarguably the biggest news out of this year's conference was the official announcement of Google Stadia. During its hour-long presentation earlier this week, Google officially detailed its gaming initiative, outlining a platform built for gamers, developers, and streamers alike.
