Ni no Kuni Sequel Confirmed by Developer Level-5

In an interview with Japanese magazine Nikkei, translated and reported on by Dualshockers, Level-5 president Akihiro Hino confirmed that a new Ni no Kuni game is in the works, and will release sometime after the upcoming Ni no Kuni movie, which premiers on August 29 in Japan.

Hino didn't give many details beyond that, unfortunately, but did comment on how Level-5 is currently reviewing its development process, according to Dualshockers. Level-5's recent  projects, Yo-kai Watch 4 and Inazuma Eleven Ares no Tenbin, were both delayed. In the interview, Hino implied that Level-5 is aiming to regain the trust of its fanbase after these delays.

Overwatch League to End GOATS Meta With New Role System

According to multiple reports, Blizzard plans to effectively end the three tanks, three healers (or "GOATS) meta that has become the norm in most Overwatch League matches, and been a common complaint among viewers

In an original report from Upcomer, the esports news site claimed that multiple sources it had within the Overwatch League had told them that Blizzard will implement a 2-2-2 role lock for teams starting in the league's fourth stage starting July 25.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Review

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite may not be the wizarding world game of my dreams (hopefully that leaked Harry Potter RPG trailer is more than a concept) but I'm pleasantly surprised with how much I'm enjoying Niantic's latest augmented reality "walking RPG." This followup to the phenomenally successful Pokemon GO does a lot of heavy lifting to justify its storyline that makes the actual idea behind it a little wonky, but the many, many layers of exploration and collection it encourages have kept me engaged on a daily basis… so far.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is, in a nutshell, Pokemon GO but with wizard tchotchkes instead of collectable pocket monsters. The longer version of the description reads a bit more like a J.K. Rowling lore tweet: in the quiet, post-Deathly Hallows epilogue lives of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, a great calamity has hit the wizarding world and threatens to tear down the wall between muggles and magic. You and wizards around the world are enlisted to help uphold the Statute of Secrecy and eventually solve this Calamity.

8 Wii U Games We Want to See on Nintendo Switch

With the release of Super Mario Maker 2 on the Nintendo Switch this week, more of the Wii U's library finds some sort of representation on the Switch, which is great considering how little time people had to really experience some of its best titles. Whether via sequels or ports, Nintendo has slowly been bringing the best of the Wii U to its current console.

But even with Splatoon and Mario Maker sequels, Captain Toad and New Super Mario Bros. U ports and more, there are still treasured gems of the Wii U trapped on Nintendo's last-gen system. Here are seven WiiU ports Nintendo should make (or franchises to at least consider sequels for), instead of just leaving all this unspent money in my wallet.

Days Gone Challenge Mode Released Today

Days Gone's latest free content update adds a standalone Challenge Mode, which will see 12 weeks of challenges added to the Sony Bend PS4 exclusive. Players can take part in the first challenge, "Surrounded," starting today.

As detailed in the latest Days Gone patch notes on Reddit, the first free DLC challenge "Surrounded" pits players against a never-ending horde of Freakers. Players will have to use weapons, the environment, and whatever traps are at their disposal to take down Freakers, and doing so will increase your timer to keep battling the horde.

Every Friday for the next 12 weeks (this week included), a new challenge will unlock in the new mode (exact times are to be determined), but players can compete in the challenges whenever they are available to earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold rankings. Doing so will earn players credits, allowing them to buy new characters, custom accents, and rings. And, once players complete a challenge, they'll earn a Patch specific to that challenge, which Deacon will wear in both this mode as well as in the story mode.

What Breath of the Wild 2 Might Mean for the Zelda Timeline

The Legend of Zelda's timeline is long, complicated and notoriously messy. With 19 mainline entries, and one more on the way, it's understandable that things have gotten a bit unwieldy. Even then, most timelines don't include a split that generates three separate timelines rife with floods, parallel dimensions and resurrected demons.

The latest Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, simultaneously exists at the end of all three of these timelines, yet is strangely disconnected from each of them. The E3 2019 Breath of the Wild 2 trailer, however, suggests both it and its predecessor will finally have a much more concrete spot in this ever-growing legend.

Google Will Not Remove Games From Your Stadia Library

Games purchased for Google Stadia will not be removed from your library, even if the game is removed from sale.

Talking to IGN and UK press at Google's offices in London, Google vice president and Stadia boss Phil Harrison addressed concerns that games could be removed from the service and prevent users who have paid for the game without the ability to play.

When posed with the theoretical idea of a publisher pulling support for Stadia after a user having brought one of the company's games, Harrison responded "Yes, you will still be able to access the game."

"Now there may be, as we've seen in the past, times where the developer or publisher no longer has rights to sell to new players," he elaborated. "And that means that the game will not be available to new players, but it will continue to be available to existing players."

Google Stadia Exclusives Aim To Be 'Fun to Watch’ As Well As Play

Steel Division 2 Review

One of my only disappointments with Eugen's Steel Division: Normandy 44 was the lack of any love for my beloved Eastern Front of World War II. Steel Division 2 corrects this, adding tons of new, historically-grounded units and divisions from the iconic T-34 tank to the lesser-known woman-led Soviet sniper teams. It does almost everything Normandy 44 did as well or better. But just about everything new it tries gets bogged down in the mud.

If you played the original, Steel Division 2's multiplayer and skirmish vs AI modes are going to seem very familiar. You select one of 28 thoroughly-researched historical divisions from either the Allied or Axis side to serve as the base "deck" for your forces. There is a lot of fun tweaking to do here as you have to consider trade-offs like having fewer, more hardened troops with higher stats but also higher costs, or a larger number of weak and cheap rookies. And Steel Division's three-phase battle system makes a return, adding the extra wrinkle of having to think about which units are going to become available in the early, middle, and late parts of the battle.

Even If It Fails, Google Stadia Can Still Bring Us Into the Game Streaming Future

Though Google is making some big promises with Stadia, I still don't think it'll be universally replacing video game consoles any time soon. People can be slow to adapt to new tech, internet speeds and data caps still pose a barrier, and Stadia won't be available worldwide at launch (though more regions will be added in 2020).

Entertainment as a whole may have shifted to streaming and subscription services, but that's( at least in part) because people never grew attachments to their boomboxes or VCRs the way they did for the NES, or that excitement from getting a manual with their game case. Like many others, you'd have to pry my cartridges and discs out of my cold, dead, slightly inconvenienced hands before I gave them away. But despite my old ways, I know an all-digital future is probably inevitable, and Google is clearly ready to capitalize on it.

WoW Successor Canceled Because Blizzard Didn't Control Its Scope

Titan, the MMO positioned to succeed World of Warcraft, was allegedly canceled because Blizzard Entertainment wasn't able to control its scope and ambition.

Reported by VG247, Mike Morhaime, co-founder and former president of Blizzard Entertainment, revealed this during a speech at Gamelab in Barcelona, Spain.

"We've tried really hard not to announce any games that weren't ready to be announced, or we weren't sure that we were going to release them," said Morhaime. "Titan is an exception to that where we wanted it to be our next generation, our sequel to sort of World of Warcraft. We took a lot of our senior developers and put them on this project. And I think where we really failed was we failed to control scope. It was very ambitious."

Final Fantasy XIV Gets Live-Action TV Show

Final Fantasy XIV Online is getting a TV show adaptation from Square Enix with Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind - marking the first time Final Fantasy will be realized in live-action. The series will be filled with Final Fantasy staples like chocobos, airships, beastmen, and of course, Cid, who has appeared in most Final Fantasy games.

The Final Fantasy XIV series will tell an original story but is directly inspired by the MMORPG's characters and world of Eorzea, which includes elements from many Final Fantasy games before it, such as magitek (originally from Final Fantasy VI).

"Final Fantasy XIV and Eorzea are the perfect gateway into Final Fantasy for longtime fans and newcomers alike," said Sony Pictures Television Co-President Chris Parnell. "This show is about embracing and embodying all of the elements that have made the mythos such an endlessly captivating phenomenon, and it's an immense honor to be bringing all of Eorzea's iconic characters, settings, and concepts – including fan-favorites like Cid and, of course, the chocobos – to life for a television audience."

The Past, Future, and Trash Talk of Gears of War Esports

Gears of War's esports scene has evolved quite a bit over the franchise's history. It started as a mainly community-led endeavor with occasional tournaments by companies like Major League Gaming. Since then, Gears developer The Coalition has made strides to give the scene a professional edge beginning with more in-game competitive features in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and The Coalition's development of the Gears Pro Circuit. However, with the scene's grown, the team behind Gears esports has been careful to make sure there's still respect and a celebration of the scene's grassroots origins.

Although Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is being developed by Pokemon Go developer Niantic, there are still multiple lessons it can stand to learn from Niantic's flagship catch 'em all game. Here they are, from three die-hard Pokemon Go players on the IGN staff.

Make Our Collection Useful

While Harry Potter: Wizards Unite shares a lot of the same mechanics as Pokemon Go in terms of its basic mechanics (catching Pokemon on the world map vs. catching Foundables, for example), the thing that differentiates Pokemon Go is that the Pokemon you're collecting can be used for things beyond simply adding to your hoard.

Depending on what Pokemon spawns, its IV ratings, and level, it could be utilized right away in other aspects of the game. In Wizards Unite, you're basically just scrapbooking and adding stickers to your notebook — which is cool the first few times, but feels worthless and grindy the more you come across the same Foundable. By contrast, in Pokemon Go, I could catch 10 Charmanders in a row, but every single one of those will be different in its level, moveset, usability, etc depending on what I need at a given moment. Maybe I will evolve that Charmander to a Charizard to use in a raid or PVP battle, or maybe I caught an ultra-rare shiny Pokemon that is just nice as a high-value collector's item.

Astral Chain Planned as First Part of a Trilogy, No Post-Launch Content Planned

Astral Chain, PlatinumGames' upcoming Nintendo Switch exclusive, might be the first game in a trilogy but don't expect additional content directly following its release.

In an interview with Astral Chain's director, Takahisa Taura, our Netherlands team got more information regarding the game's future. "There are currently no plans to release extras for Astral Chain," said Taura as translated by Google, so unless plans change we shouldn't expect much in the way of DLC.

Instead, PlatinumGames hopes to turn Astral Chain into the first of trilogy - provided it sells well of course. "We

Dr. Disrespect's Twitch Ban Has Been Lifted

The popular Twitch streamer Guy "Dr. Disrespect" Beahm has been reinstated after a two-week ban.

Beahm's channel, which currently has just under 3.5 Million subscribers on Twitch (several thousand of them being paid subscribers), was initially banned during E3 2019, when Beahm repeatedly entered convention center restrooms while broadcasting live to his Twitch channel.

In addition to this being against the law in California, it's also a violation of Twitch's community guidelines, which states "Sharing content that violates another's reasonable expectation of privacy" (like they're using the restroom) as a valid reason for banning a user. Beahm also had his E3 badge revoked by the ESA, according to a report from Kotaku.

Here Are The Roller Derby Tips You Need to Win Roller Champions

A few weeks ago at E3 2019, between a series of Tom Clancy related first-person shooters, Ubisoft revealed Roller Champions, an online multiplayer sports game loosely based on the real world sport of roller derby.

Roller derby is a fast-paced contact sport played on roller skates, mostly by women. It's very welcoming to queer skaters, and it's all about getting around the track fast, without too many people knocking you around along the way.

As an active roller derby player, I was ecstatic to see the sport I love finally used as the basis for a video game. Sure, it's not a 1:1 recreation, but it gets the most important things right. Thanks to its core similarities, there's a lot you can learn about being better at Roller Champions by studying how pros play roller derby.

A Narrative-Driven PUBG Game Will Require a Complete Gameplay Overhaul

There's a new PUBG game coming, and it's not a battle royale. It's not a sequel, either. In fact, it's "an original narrative experience within the PUBG universe," according to the PUBG Corporation. Glen Schofield, formerly of Sledgehammer and Visceral Games, is leading up PUBG Corporation's new studio 'Striking Distance' to build this new PUBG game.

The gameplay is going to require a complete, ground-up rebuild, though.

If you've ever played one of the custom PUBG modes, like death match, you know the game doesn't lend itself well to being played outside its battle royale comfort zone. With all the hundreds of hours I have into PUBG, I still don't like how the guns feel.

Kratos Was Almost Cut From God of War

God of War director Cory Barlog has revealed that Sony Santa Monica had discussed cutting Kratos from the game during the early planning stages for the 2018 PS4 game.

Talking at Gamelab in Barcelona, Eurogamer reports that Barlog said "Early in discussion, people were saying we had to get rid of Kratos. It was like, 'he's annoying, he's done'."

Barlog went on to describe that members development team felt that Kratos' anti-hero design had been played through in the original trilogy, and that the new game needed a fresh protagonist. The argument was that the mythology was important to the series, not the character of Kratos.

Super Mario Maker 2 Review

It's hard to decide where to begin when talking about all the things I love about Super Mario Maker 2. It does nearly everything better than its already excellent predecessor, introducing some incredible new ideas, level styles, building items, and so much more - all while maintaining the charm of Mario games we know and love.

Despite enabling you to depart so radically from the core Mario style, even the most odd-ball levels still feel like they could belong to some lost Super Mario game. But Super Mario Maker 2 is so much more than just a way to live out your Miyamoto-esque design fantasies: there's also a robust online mode to play against or with other people, a story mode that could almost stand as a full Mario game in its own right, and an abundance of content available to you before you even start making your first level. Like I said, I don't even know where to begin.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Needs to Better Communicate The Big Plan

While the excitement may be at peak levels for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, there's also a lot of worries and even disdain among the community for its development roadmap. Square Enix plans to release Final Fantasy 7 over multiple installments, and plenty of people - including us - have concerns about this approach.

These concerns have been formed thanks to the incredibly limited amount of information that Square Enix has provided. So far we know that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will launch on March 3 as a two blu-ray set, and that this first game will only cover the Midgar portion of the original game. Beyond that we have no idea what the Remake project entails; no projected cadence for game releases, no suggested length of the series, no information on how the 'episodes'  will link, and no indication as to how the development team will deal with the console generation leap due to happen shortly after the first game launches.

Scavengers Wants to Totally Nail 'Coopetition'

At first glance, Scavengers doesn't do anything particularly new. All of its elements are relatively familiar. At first glance, it's your run-of-the-mill third-person multiplayer shooter with scavenging and crafting elements. Actually playing it, though, reveals a highly compelling player-versus-environment-versus-player genre mashup that is well on track to being greater than the sum of its obvious parts.

In Scavengers, the Scourge are alien parasites that came to earth after an asteroid crashed into Earth, plunging our planet into perpetual winter. Ice storms of varying categories – Category 1 being easily survivable and Category 5 being highly lethal, much like the classification of hurricanes – constantly swirl around the landscape. The Scourge have infected plenty of creatures, from people (called Outlanders) to bears (think South Park's ManBearPig), and it's just one more nasty force to deal with.

The Sinking City Review

Lovecraftian games are definitely on the rise in recent years (to varied success), but The Sinking City's blend of a mysterious and cosmic plot with clunky but serviceable third-person action rises above many of the rest of this fleshed-out genre. It places you in a detailed world filled with the fantastic and unearthly horrors befitting of any Lovecraftian tale, but provides a fresh but reverent take where others may have stayed on the tracks laid nearly a century ago. That said, while developer Frogwares' delve into Cthulhu lore has incredible moments, the tedious elements of this pulpy 1920s tale can be the wrong kind of terrifying.

The Sinking City takes steps into genre-refreshing territory in order to set it apart from its Lovecraftian peers. Where 2018's Call of Cthulhu tries to carve out a small space to tell its own stand-alone story that tucked itself into the already existing cosmic lore, The Sinking City feels like it's picking up eight movies into a Lovecraft cinematic Cthu-niverse, delivering a concentrated dose of its distinctive flavor. The first five minutes introduce the protagonist, Charles Reed, to Mister Robert Throgmorton, an important character who appears to be half-ape, half-human. That's a deep-cut reference to Lovecraft's short story, "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family." This is quickly followed up by a run-in with the Innsmouthers, who are basically fish people from another novella. It pulls from so many of Lovecraft's plots, quotes, and themes that it reverently captures the intrigue and interest from these pulpy stories while combining them in a new way. It inspires political and criminal intrigue amidst its true-to-genre story.

Cyberpunk 2077 Does Not Have a Morality System

Upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 will not feature a morality system that categorises your character as good or bad depending on their actions.

Talking to GamingBolt, quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz said "We don't have a moral system per se. However, to complete

non-lethally you have to be very good at stealth. Invest in points that allow you to stealth better, use weapons that will allow you to incapacitate the enemy instead of killing them, to make the moral choices that will allow you to avoid killing people throughout the game."

With this in mind, it appears that Cyberpunk 2077 will allow you to make moral decisions, but those choices will not be categorised and counted in the same way as, for example, Mass Effect's Paragon and Renegade system.

Black Mesa: Xen Aims to Fix Half-Life 1’s Weakest Part

Many gamers consider Half-Life 2 to be Valve's greatest achievement and one of the best games ever made. I, for one, have always preferred the original Half-Life. With no disrespect to Alyx, Dog, or the gravity gun, the mystery of the Black Mesa facility, the slow onion-peeling reveal of one weird layer after another, the mystery of the G-Man and, lest many forget, the two endings(!) that the original delivered always left a more lasting impression for me. But what knocks Half-Life 1 down a peg for a lot of folks – and this is hard to argue against – is a particular part of the campaign: Xen. The alien dimension is placed right near the end of Gordon Freeman's Excellent Science Adventure, and it was...a let-down, for sure, after the GOAT-quality experience up until that point.

The Most Disappointing Moments of E3 2019

E3 is over...long live E3! And although it was a great show overall, that doesn't mean it didn't have its fair share of disappointing moments. We went around the IGN office to round up the creme de la creme of the biggest E3 bummers.

A Lack of Rocksteady

I was already sad that we wouldn't be seeing Rocksteady's next game at E3 this year, and then Avengers happened. We still don't know what the Batman Arkham devs are up to officially, but if rumours (and a certain amount of common sense) are to be believed, it'll be a DC superhero game of some description. You only need look at this list to see that the Marvel effort on show didn't quite meet expectations - how nice would it have been to have something else to pin our superhero hopes on? As it is, the wait continues. Here's hoping that long-awaited reveal works in Rocksteady's favour, unlike Crystal Dynamics. - Joe Skrebels

Here’s Why Pokemon Fusion Is Making a Comeback

Pokemon Fusion, an online program that randomly generates the fusion of two separate Pokemon sprites into a single (often horrifying) sprite, has suddenly come back into the spotlight.

With a resurgence in Pokemon Fusion's popularity, we've decided to dig into why it has regained attention, how the program works, and share some wonderful examples of fan PokeFusions and subsequent fan art.

The Return of Pokemon Fusion

Fusing two Pokemon together to create fan art has been around nearly as long as Pokemon Red and Blue, but web developer Alex Onsager launched the widely used Pokemon Fusion website in 2010. The site spiked in popularity in 2013, generating a slew of memes, including the classic "Be strong for mother" comic created by ohcorny on Tumblr, which featured fan art for their Weepinduo, a fusio of Weepinbell and Doduo.

Samurai Shodown Review

While it may not be a household name like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, Samurai Shodown is a storied fighting game series with a legacy to uphold. The 2019 version, which is simply titled Samurai Shodown, does a great job of bringing its unique brand of methodical footsies-based 2D duels into this modern era of fighters.

Samurai Shodown finds itself on the fighting game spectrum somewhere in between Street Fighter and Divekick, meaning it's not about combos, juggles, block strings, frame traps, or other high-level fighting game techniques. Instead, it strips all of that away, leaving a game that is laser focused on careful positioning, reading your opponent, and brutally punishing their mistakes.
