The Original Diablo is Now Playable on Your Web Browser

The original 1996 Diablo is playable now right on your computer's web browser.

The browser port of the original Diablo was developed by Rivsoft, a team of developers who work on several Blizzard-related projects. However, the port would not be possible were it not for the work of a development team who in 2018 reconstructed the original source code for Diablo.

GalaXyHaXz and the Devilution team reverse-engineered the source code for the original Diablo last year in 2018. The project was meant to be archival, so the source code was reconstructed with all the bugs and bad code from the original 1996 version.

What the Game Boy Means to Me, 30 Years Later

In 1992, my grandmother, my cousin and I were in a mall someplace in Bromley, Kent, England. At eight years old I was developing a burgeoning appreciation for visiting the mall with my grandmother; as a New Zealander who visited her in the UK once a year, she had a tendency to spoil me. During this particular mall visit, my cousin told her he wanted a Game Boy, Nintendo's handheld console that had been released in Europe a couple of years prior. I didn't know what a "Game Boy" was at that time, but I knew that if my cousin wanted one, then I wanted one too.

The Game Boy, an innocuous purchase for a kid who only really wanted one out of FOMO, changed my life.

Madden NFL 20 Review

With every new Madden comes a new set of upgrades and disappointments, but Madden NFL 20's balance is a bit more favorable than usual. Among the new features are a couple of key changes that underscore the difference between a typical player and a true NFL superstar in meaningful and exciting ways, making the moment-to-moment gameplay as strong as it's been since the switch to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. On the other hand, it leaves Franchise mode without significant new features and microtransactions continue to be an issue with Madden Ultimate Team. So EA's ongoing quest to satisfy the entire spectrum of casual, competitive, and sim fans is only partially successful, though more so than usual.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - New Monster Impressions and Gameplay

Subspecies aren't totally new to Monster Hunter World, but they're making a comeback to the series in a big way in the upcoming Iceborne expansion. They may look familiar, but these subspecies are more than just a reskin.

We also noticed at least nine exciting quality-of-life improvements in Iceborne, but continue on to see gameplay of each new monster with hands-on impressions and comparisons to each of their parent species.

EA Explains Why It Offers Limited Nintendo Switch Support

EA CEO Andrew Wilson has opened up on why the publisher offers limited support for Nintendo Switch, saying it's because people prefer to play EA games on other platforms.

During EA's first quarter earnings call this week an analyst floated the idea for The Sims on Switch, but EA's head honcho disagreed.

"Any time we're evaluating platform conversations we're really looking at a couple of things," said Wilson. "One, does the game really fit the profile of that platform in terms of the control or the community ecosystem? Two, do we think the community playing on that platform would appreciate the game and go there, or would they prefer to play it somewhere else?

"We have a lot of data that would suggest a great many Switch owners also own a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One or a PC and very often choose to play the games that we make on those platforms, even though they have a Switch and they enjoy a lot of great content on the Switch."

FIFA 20: The FUT Changes That Actually Matter

Unsurprisingly, Ultimate Team is back for another year in FIFA 20, complete with its familiar addictive squad building, plethora of game modes and microtransactions - or "surprise mechanics" as they are now known. These aspects aren't changing, for better or worse, but what actually IS new this year? Here are what we think are the biggest changes to FUT in FIFA 20.

Season Objectives

"A new sense of progression" is apparently crucial to FUT this year and key to that are the new Season Objectives. EA hope that these will have the same impact on the game mode that Squad Building challenges did when introduced in FIFA 17. Essentially these work similar to a battle pass system - you earn XP for completing challenges, which will move you up into higher levels, thus earning better rewards.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Why Killstreaks Are the Right Move

Announced in a lead-up to a full multiplayer premiere this Thursday, killstreaks are officially back in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I, for one, relish their return. It's a controversial topic, one with supporters on either side defending the validity of playing an objective versus rewarding raw shooter skill. But killstreaks inherently speak to the spirit of the Call of Duty series: a fast-paced arena where personal performance is the primary metric to judge a player's success.

Scorestreaks, introduced in Black Ops II, rewarded players for completing objectives, destroying enemy equipment, and resupplying allies. Killstreaks, as the name would suggest, only rewarded you for getting kills. Playing the objective may be the law of the land in Battlefield but Call of Duty, to me, has always felt more like a vain expression of my own shooter skill than it has a game about teamwork... and that's totally fine.

Nintendo Switch Enters Top 15 Best-Selling Consoles of All Time

PlayStation 2 has long reigned as the best-selling video game console of all time, with no imminent threat of losing that title. I jumped into the very start of Concrete Genie's adventure, taking on the role of the young, bullied kid Ash in the dilapidated seaside town of Denska, and was immediately taken by the charming though intentionally drab world. That's in part thanks to Pixelopus' animation, which employs Coraline-esque stop-motion facial expressions for its characters, the A Series of Unfortunate Events-like world, and the sincerity with which the developers have written this story.

Mutant Year Zero: Seed of Evil DLC Review

Mutant Year Zero: Seed of Evil, the downloadable expansion to last year's surprisingly challenging XCOM-esque tactics RPG Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, is an expansion in its simplest, most direct form: there's simply more of it. While Seed of Evil makes tweaks and changes to the original formula, they feel very safe and don't do as much to evolve the gameplay as one might have hoped.

Picking up where Road to Eden left off, Seed of Evil advances the overarching Mutant Year Zero story but quickly pulls a bait-and-switch by diverting to a new, self-contained mystery where your party of mutant stalkers fights an army of plant-based clones threatening the last vestiges of humanity. While I got a bit of proverbial whiplash from the quick, jerky nature Seed of Evil wrestles out of Road to Eden's cliffhanger ending, the story ultimately does a good job creating some new mystique in a world you've already explored.

Halo Infinite E3 2019 Trailer Has a Secret Message From Cortana

A secret message hidden inside the Halo Infinite E3 2019 trailer has finally been uncovered, and it sounds like there was more Cortana in the trailer than previously believed.

343 Industries unveiled a new trailer for Halo Infinite at E3 2019 this year that showed Master Chief being awakened by a marine outside the wreckage of a destroyed Halo installation. The trailer mostly focused on these two characters, with a small teaser for Cortana at the very end. But hidden in plain sight there was a mysterious message that teased even more mysteries related to the A.I.

Twitter user @xepyal tweeted at 343 Industries narrative experience director Dan Chosich with a URL link they found hidden in the Discover Hope trailer. The link directs anyone who clicks on it to a 40 second audio clip that begins with the sound of footsteps before a voice, which sounds like Cortana, says "This…this is a part of me. I don't know why. I don't how. But it is me."

If You Can't Wait for Cyberpunk 2077, Check Out Killjoys

Cyberpunk 2077 is dropping in April 2020, but it already boasts the pedigree and promise to capture the imaginations of gamers worldwide. The wait may feel excruciating, but in the meantime, there's a TV show airing now that could scratch your itch for cool, cyberpunk-infused storytelling: Killjoys, created by Michelle Lovretta - purveyor of sleek, sexy, speculative narratives like the series Lost Girl (which followed the life of a succubus straddling the human and fae worlds).

Killjoys began its fifth and final season on Friday, July 19. The stylish show has strong cyberpunk elements recognizable to many sci-fi fans, like a looming Company that needs no other name because its authoritarian rule is absolute, and the regular use of cybernetics to augment human bodies.

Hitman 3 Is Currently in Development and Might Be Episodic Again

IO Interactive, the Danish video game developer behind the Hitman series, is already looking towards making Hitman 3. But before that, IO Interactive may release a completely new IP first.

In a new episode of the NoClip video game documentary, host Danny O'Dwyer visited IO Interactive's office in Copenhagen to find out how the studio was able to survive a dramatic 2017 where parent company Square Enix tried to sell the studio.

Instead of finding a buyer, IO Interactive underwent a management buyout to become an independent studio and the owners of the Hitman IP.

Join Jesse Faden as she visits the Black Rock Processing department of the Federal Bureau of Control. That might sound like a trip down Bureaucracy Lane, but it actually involves entering a quarry that shouldn't be there, lit by the light of stars that can't exist, and stuffed full of haunted ex-employees to bounce off of walls. Lovely.

Along the way, you'll see a lot of combat, featuring multiple weapon forms and powers (being able to chuck the bodies of downed enemies at other enemies never gets old). What you won't see are any story spoilers, so don't worry about taking a peek unless you want to stay 100% fresh.

Google Stadia, Australia and the Impending Game-Streaming War

The future may well prove that OnLive was ahead of its time. Like Timothy Dalton's serious Bond take before Daniel Craig, or Boss before House of Cards, OnLive may have been that necessary sacrificial trailblazer whose death leads to the next down-the-track leap.

For those unaware, OnLive was the first game-streaming service of note. It's now gone the way of the dodo, but the idea was as straightforward then as it is today for surviving services: instant on. No need to physically own a game. No need for a high-end PC or the latest console. Just a compatible device and a high-speed internet connection.

The catch is that game-streaming services require adequate, stable bandwidth to be playable.

Did the IGN Community Experience Switch Joy-Con Drift Issues?

Nintendo has had a rough week, ever since a class action lawsuit was filed over issues with the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers experiencing drifting. Controller drift is when a joystick registers input when there is none. In the case of a shooter game, it might move the reticle when you're trying to aim precisely. At first, Nintendo was fine with putting out a corporate-speak non-response, but things grew heated enough that Nintendo has finally agreed to repair any Joy-Cons for free and refund past repairs. So exactly how widespread was this Joy-Con drift issue? While other students in Finland were applying to colleges with research papers and resumes, Lake was required to send in a 75-page screenplay. So he submitted a draft of his video game script.

"The drama teacher had just returned to

In the setup for that, he was saying 'You can choose: you write in Finnish or you write in English.' That felt, to me, that's perfect. You needed to send 75 pages of screenplay as a sample, so I just sent Max Payne."

Control: The Books, TV Shows and Movies to Check Out Before You Play - IGN First

When it comes to games, we're pretty familiar with the trappings of fantasy, sci-fi or war narratives, but you might be a little less up to date with New Weird. Coined by author M. John Harrison to describe the work of (among others) China Miéville, it's a form of speculative fiction that revels in inexplicability - it's often a bit horror, a bit sci-fi, a bit fantasy, but if you put it up against any of the canon texts in those genres, it wouldn't look like any of them. It's telling that many authors who get told they're part of the New Weird immediately reject it, because they think being defined at all is too limiting.

Control might well be the first mainstream New Weird game. New Weird fiction is often about a place, not people, and The Oldest House - Remedy Entertainment's unknowable new setting - very much fits the bill. New Weird also reflects the underlying weirdness of the modern world, and Control's fiction regularly weaves in real-life events, recontextualising them for a world in which there's a government bureau to combat paranatural occurrences. Most of all, New Weird is really f**king odd. And yes, Control is that too.

Unfortunately, authenticity isn't everything. Kill la Kill The Game: IF feels like a stripped-down version of the prototypical 3D anime fighter. Its loose, mashy fighting fails to create the opportunities for strategic depth I've come to expect in great fighting games. Meanwhile, its story and single-player modes feel less than substantial.

Opinion: Breath of the Wild 2 Can't Just Give Us More of the Same

How do you follow up a masterpiece? It's a question many artists face, and it's what Nintendo must ask while developing the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Breath of the Wild was a revolutionary title for the Zelda series and the open-world genre. The, "go anywhere, climb anything" approach was the breath of fresh air (pun intended) the franchise needed, and it is widely regarded as one of the greatest Zelda games of all time (and the best game on Nintendo Switch.) The reveal of Breath of the Wild 2 was Nintendo's big announcement to cap off its Nintendo Direct for E3 2019, but the trailer told us very little about what to expect from our next trip to Hyrule.

Sam Lake: Writing Control Has Given Me Max Payne Flashbacks

Sam Lake wants you to know that he loves when stories get super meta – what you could describe as getting really self-aware and irreverent of their own world. The Max Payne franchise was infamous for this, throwing its titular hero into a hallucination sequence, with Payne commenting that it feels like he's in a video game. With Remedy and Lake's next game, Control, out on August 28, the writer says that he's had many a flashback to writing Max Payne.

"It's fascinating, especially when you are studying

," Lake told IGN on this month's episode of IGN Unfiltered. "It almost feels like it's a literary genre made for analyzing it, almost like you're playing a game. Like you are coming up with interpretations and investing into it and gaining more out of it by investing into it. So playing the game almost with the writer has also been in my mind when writing for games in some ways. That's where it started. It's all post-modern and playing around with point-of-view and what's real and what's not real ...I've had many kinds of flashbacks to working on Max Payne."

Xbox Home Screen Redesign Removes Cortana

Microsoft has redesigned the Xbox One Home user interface with a variety of features designed to provide a faster experience. Among the changes, support for the Cortana voice assistant has been dropped.

Announced on the Xbox Wire blog, Microsoft explained that the company intends to shift voice assistant elements away from on-console and into the cloud. This means that, while you can still use voice commands to control your console, you'll talk to Cortana via a smart device such as an Alexa product with the Cortana skill or a mobile device with an app, rather that via your Xbox headset.

Fire Emblem Director Explains How Marriage Has Changed in Three Houses

One of the goals for Intelligent Systems with Fire Emblem: Three Houses was to give players a more personal experience with the world and setting. That's why the support system was revamped to focus more on the player character, who is more of an avatar for the player than a unique hero with their own story.

Speaking with Intelligent Systems ahead of the release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, director Toshiyuki Kusaskihara explained to IGN why only the player can unlock S-Rank support levels:

"The reason that we have S-Rank endings for only the protagonist has a lot to do with the fact that you're using an avatar for the game," Kusakihara says. "We really want the player to feel like they get some kind of satisfaction out of getting to know a certain character the best through gameplay."

Fire Emblem Devs on If They've Thought About an Advance Wars Sequel

Intelligent Systems, co-developers of this week's Fire Emblem: Three Houses, are of course also known for another renowned Nintendo strategy franchise — Advance Wars. But for fans of the more modern military aesthetic of that series, Intelligent Systems' work on the lengthy Three Houses campaign, and plans for post-launch DLC, hasn't left much room for the developers to consider an Advance Wars follow-up in the near future.

Speaking to IGN ahead of Three Houses launch, Intelligent Systems Director Toshiyuki Kusakihara told IGN the developers "don't even have the time to think about" what they're doing after Three Houses."

"While we can say that we're working on the DLC and there's going to be a lot of content

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Review

Before its resurgence in popularity on the 3DS handhelds, there was a time where the Fire Emblem series once lived on home consoles. Twelve years after Radiant Dawn on Wii, Fire Emblem: Three Houses has finally returned to the living room on the Switch, and it's better than ever. With a vast and open base hub to explore, new ways to turn the tide of battle with your chosen band of colorful characters, and a story that's as brutal as the choices you'll have to make on the battlefield, Three Houses is everything I've ever wanted in a turn-based strategy game. Its grand adventure is filled with drama and intrigue across whichever of the titular three houses you choose to join, and each brings its own unique perspective. Following just one of these paths from humble beginnings to a full-blown war for dominance took me over 70 hours, and left me hungry for more.
