Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Final Review

For the first time in a few years, it seems like Call of Duty has stopped peeking at other shooters' homework for inspiration. It's not to say it hasn't been successful with taking on trending modes and mechanics, like when Treyarch's Black Ops 4 ditched the campaign and introduced an amazing battle royale mode. This year, though, Infinity Ward pulls from its own history for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. And as a result, it's delivered excellent gunplay to pair with an intense and effective campaign and a fantastic weapon customization system in multiplayer. Something it didn't learn, though, is that even a great arsenal can't make up for poor map design, especially when there's such a limited selection available at launch. Missteps in multiplayer and Spec Ops are like suppression fire that keep Modern Warfare from taking the high ground of its classic namesake, but everything else suggests that the series is now heading in a promising direction.

The Witcher Reading Guide: How to Prepare for Netflix's Series

With production on Netflix's The Witcher now wrapped, it's only a matter of time before this wild world of wonder and weirdness hits the small screen. However, executive producer and showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich's adaptation of this beloved fantasy world isn't tied to the massively successful Witcher game franchise developed by CD Projekt Red and which established its significance in the zeitgeist. Instead, the Netflix show is based on the books by author Andrzej Sapkowski.

Sapkowski has published eight Witcher books since he started writing the series back in the mid-'80s when the illustrious Polish author first submitted Wiedzmín — "The Witcher" — to fantasy magazine Fantastyka.

Every Call of Duty Single-Player Campaign, Ranked

Call of Duty is still going strong 16 years later with its latest iteration, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. While the franchise is known primarily for its fast-paced, twitchy multiplayer combat, each COD (with the exception of last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4) has also included a robust single-player campaign that explores boots on the ground combat and the harsh realities of war.

While early entries focused primarily on WWII combat, Call of Duty has taken on many other popular time periods since, including the Vietnam War and Cold War eras, as well as fictional wars in the future. But which Call of Duty campaign reigns supreme? Check out our gallery below.

Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series' Final Episode's Release Date Revealed

The third and final episode of Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series will be released on November 21, 2019, on Oculus Quest and Rift headsets and will allow players to have a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader himself.

StarWars.com revealed more details for the final episode of the series that tells a canon Star Wars story by David S. Goyer and puts players face-to-face with Darth Vader in his castle on Mustafar.

"Vader Immortal: Episode III begins with Vader having seized the powerful Bright Star artifact, and returned to his castle to activate it," says director Ben Snow. "Working with your droid companion ZO-E3 and the Mustafarians, you need to get back up to the castle and try to stop Vader before he destroys life on Mustafar. This involves you discovering more about the power of your bloodline and using that to fight your way through Imperial forces as you break back into Vader's castle. You even have a run-in with a familiar foe from a previous episode. Ultimately, you'll have to confront Vader face-to-face and try to stop his plans."

The Best Games of 2019 So Far – October Update

With the end-of-year rush on the horizon, we're pausing to look back at the best games of 2019 so far. We've already covered the best games on each system — PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC — but this list encompasses all platforms to provide a more complete look at this year's top reviewed games. Below you'll find all 47 games released in 2019 that received a review score of 8.5 or higher from IGN. Note that, despite their qualifying scores, expansions (e.g. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers) and ports (e.g. Cuphead and Unravel 2 on Switch) aren't included. Remakes (e.g. Resident Evil 2 and Link's Awakening) are, however, since they are effectively new games rather than remasters.

Second Trailer for Netflix's The Witcher Shows Off Geralt in Combat

The second trailer for Netflix's The Witcher series released Thursday morning, and with it comes a brand new glimpse into the world of monster hunters like Geralt of Rivia, and an actual release date. All eight episodes of The Witcher will debut on Netflix on December 20, 2019.

The trailer gives us a greater look at actor Henry Cavill's interpretation of Geralt than previous teasers have. We see Geralt being questioned by a number of characters, all of whom appear to be dissecting the legend of the White Wolf in their own way. When one character insinuates that Geralt should have the marking of a monster, Geralt responds as dryly as only a witcher can, joking that he's had his fangs and horns filed down.

Nintendo Beats Profit Estimates Thanks To Switch Lite

Nintendo has beaten analyst profit estimations for the second quarter thanks to increased software sales provided by Nintendo Switch Lite users.

Boomberg reports that analysts predicted a 50.5 billion yen operating income for Nintendo, but the company has now revealed that it generated 66.8 billion yen ($615 million). Sales generated 271.9 billion yen, exceeding predictions of 250.8 billion.

Nintendo has set itself profit projections for the whole year, ending March 2020, that are notably below analyst estimates: 260 billion yen is forecast, despite analyst predictions of 308.1 billion yen and a series of strong upcoming games such as Pokemon Sword and Shield. Norman Reedus Talks Kojima's Directorial Style on Death Stranding

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Death Stranding star Norman Reedus described Hideo Kojima as a "genius' genius" while discussing the enigmatic game developer's directorial style.

While discussing how Kojima directed Death Stranding's cutscenes – with or without all the necessary actors in the same room at times – Reedus described how oftentimes it was just down to he and Kojima, leading to peculiar interactions.

"A lot of times it was just me and Hideo. He would have a plastic baby doll on the ground and want me to cradle it and act like it's dead. Then act like it's alive," Reedus said, seemingly referencing Death Stranding's first major teaser trailer. "Then freak out because there's handprints everywhere. You stand up and he goes, imagine there's a thousand dead whales in front of you, and you're like, 'What?!' His mind is on another level. He's a genius' genius. He and I got into a shorthand where he would look at me and he would point and frown and make a face and I would just go, yep, I got it. We sort of transcended the language barrier after a while."

PS4 Jumps Wii, PS1 on List of All-Time Best-Selling Consoles

PlayStation 2 has long reigned as the best-selling video game console of all time, with no imminent threat of losing that title. Opinion: Why I Want an Overwatch Story Campaign More than Overwatch 2

Editor's Note: This piece was originally published in June, but we've repromoted it and updated sections of it in time for Blizzcon.

For a game I still spend up to 20 hours a week playing, I'll be the first to admit that Overwatch does have its problems. Yes, the inherent problems of balancing a 30-plus character hero-shooter roster plague it, the issues of its loot box culture are well documented, and not all are onboard with the new role lock system. None of these, however, affect my enjoyment of Overwatch enough; it's still my favourite game.

Death Stranding Launch Trailer Gives You the Best Look at the Story Yet

The launch trailer for Death Stranding has arrived, and it provides the best look at the mysterious game's story that we've had so far. So much so, in fact, it may be a bit spoiler-y.

The huge trailer - eight minutes in length - takes a deeper dive into the premise of Death Stranding, offering a better look at the game's broad cast of characters. For the first time we get to see Higgs and Die-Hardman without their masks, as well as get a better understanding of Sam's mission. There's also plenty of shots of some really, really strange things: anyone up for dealing with a flying whale monster? Or how about a hundred-foot tall woman? It's all here.

Moons of Madness Review

You can tell that a lot of great Lovecraftian games are crafted with love for the 20th century writer's vision of horror, but Moons of Madness often feels more like an interactive movie than a video game.  And I can't help but wonder if it could have been more successful if it were. The story is decent though unfocused, but it suffers from the presence of gameplay that's rarely more than busywork and often left me feeling as cold as the planet it's set on.

Lovecraft and the cosmic-horror genre have found a comfortable home in video games. The early 20th century Massachusetts writer's ideas have formed the basis of plenty of them in recent years, including Bloodborne and The Sinking City, but in Moons of Madness, developer Rock Pocket Games takes the ideas of the Ancient Ones in space to its logical endpoint by just putting you on Mars.

Doraemon Story of Seasons Review

After an hour-long tutorial, Doraemon Story of Seasons has me running out of battery faster than my Switch. It's been 62 minutes, and I've barely touched a thumbstick. Soon, this licensed farm life spin-off will have me familiarly watering crops, collecting bugs, and rearing livestock in a farming sim that borrows from both Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley. But first, I have to get through the boring part.

Doraemon, one of the best-selling manga in the world, has come together with Marvelous, the original developer behind the Harvest Moon farming series. The crossover is as unusual as it sounds. What do a sleepy 10-year-old and a robot cat from the 22nd century have to do with farming? As it turns out, not much! The characters are lost in an alternate dimension, and the only way they can get home is to befriend the townsfolk. Sony Has Trademarked The Next 5 Generations of PlayStation

Sony has published five new trademarks that secure the company names for up to five generations of potential PlayStation consoles.

The trademarks, initially filed for earlier this month, provide Sony with exclusive use of ther terms PS6, PS7, PS8, PS9, and PS10. The publishing of these trademarks was picked up by trademark blogger Piercesword.

This is not an uncommon approach for Sony. PS2 and PS3 trademarks were filed a year in advance of each console's release, while trademarks for the PS4 and PS5 were filed back in 2006.

It should be noted that these trademarks don't indicate that Sony is definitely planning to make these consoles. Rather, it makes sense for the company to own the trademarks to consoles it potentially may make in the future in order to prevent other businesses snapping up the PS branding before Sony does. So even if PlayStation 6 is never made, the trademark is still safe and can't be used by anyone else to capitalise on a brand Sony has spent over two decades building.

Ubisoft has revealed in a blog post that it intends to introduce a number of large-scale improvements to Ghost Recon Breakpoint, including a "more radical and immersive version" of the game that will focus on player choice and an authentic military experience.

"We are aware that some of the design choices made have caused polarized reactions and discussions regarding the direction taken by the Ghost Recon franchise," explains the blog. "Some of you would like our new survival mechanics to have more impact on your experience, while others dislike the tiered loot progression we have added."

Luigi's Mansion 3 Guide: RIP Suites Walkthrough

This portion of the Luigi's Mansion 3 guide contains a walkthrough for your first official objectives. After installing the elevator tracker, you'll need to practice contacting Professor E.Gadd by opening up your menu and connecting to the Professor E.Gadd Hotline. Once that's done, you'll have your main objective: recover E. Gadd's Briefcase.

These objectives will take you through the Basement (B!), Grand Lobby (Floor 1), and part of the Mezzanine (Floor 2). Near the end of this mission, you'll have to defeat the Maid Boss who has swallowed Professor E.Gadd's briefcase. The 21 Side-Quests That Are Always in RPGs

Ever rounded up a bunch of sheep or pigs or horses into a pen and thought...this feels familiar? How about when you're in someone's house for dinner and something feels a little, I don't know, "off" about what they're serving? What about when old Doris the NPC who lives across the street can't find her beloved frying pan?

Here, we've rounded up the quest-types that we see over and over again in RPGs, for better or worse (I'm looking at you, "killing rats and spiders"). Tell us your favorites in the comment section below!

The Monster That's Terrorizing a Town Turns Out To Be Humans (Bandits and/or Rowdy Kids)

There's a horrible beast in the woods that's been stealing chickens and... sweet rolls? Or maybe it's actually bandits and they are kidnapping kids. Either way, that big bad wolf is actually just some guy named Geoff. Or a kid named Jeff. Either way, you better give them a stern talking to. Maybe sometimes a real monster shows up to teach this lesson for you. Examples include: The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Horizon: Zero Dawn. - Jon Ryan, Senior Editor

These Pro Players Want the Same Surprising Smash Character Next

Some of the best pro Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players from all over the world came together for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate World Challenge Cup at Nintendo Live in Kyoto, Japan. There, IGN was able to ask both The Dream Team and Team Europe what character they want to see next in Smash Bros. Ultimate, and we received some surprising answers.

Nairo, Light, and Mr.R—three of the seven pro players we interviewed—all said they want a character from the Tales series represented in Smash, specifically, Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia. Originally for the GameCube, Tales of Symphonia was the fifth of Bandai Namco's Tales series and released in Japan in 2003 and North America in 2004.

Kojima Productions Confirmed Death Stranding on PC Years Ago

Though its PS4 release hasn't even come out yet, Kojima Productions confirmed Death Stranding will be coming to PC in 2020 following its exclusive launch on PS4. But the company, in its fledgling days, already revealed it would be coming to PC...and we kind of just forgot.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot: Watch Vegeta vs. Majin Buu

When Dragon Ball Z Kakarot was revealed, there was a certain amount of skepticism that it would tackle the entirety of Goku's adult life. The sprawling martial arts anime epic clocks in at just shy of 300 episodes, and even after cutting out the filler, that's a lot of story to adapt into a video game. But, sure enough, Kakarot tracks Goku's adventures from the appearance of Radditz and the first utterance of the word "Saiyan" all the way through the final showdown with Majin Buu, letting players take control of not just Goku, but the whole principle cast of pointy-haired heroes.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but watching almost 20 minutes of uncut gameplay is even better, so have a look for yourself:

Square Enix Is Hiring For More Kingdom Hearts Staff

Square Enix Osaka is hiring new staff to work on "HD development" for the Kingdom Hearts series.

Square's Osaka studio has posted a few job listings requesting UI designers, effect designers, and technical artists. The roles are for work on "HD development of the Kingdom Hearts series", with no further context provided.

The last Kingdom Hearts game was this year's Kingdom Hearts 3, and no further projects have been announced beyond the Re:Mind expansion due out this winter. "HD development" could simply mean 'development' - the games are now in HD after all - but with Square's history of HD remasters there's always potential there. Quite what they'd be remastering would be another question, though, as much of the Kingdom Hearts back catalogue is already available for current-gen platforms in HD.

Luigi's Mansion 3 Review

I'm looking forward to the new Ghostbusters movie coming in 2020, but I'll be surprised if it's as much fun as Luigi's Mansion 3. The anxiety-riddled brother straps the vacuum pack back on for the first time since 2013's Dark Moon for 3DS and headlines one of the funniest and most charming Nintendo games on the Switch yet.

Setting aside the nitpicking fact that Luigi and his friends are checking in at a hotel this time rather than an actual mansion, Luigi's Mansion 3 had me smiling and laughing at its adorable sense of humor right off the bat. From Mario and Luigi's goofy half-English, half-gibberish conversations to communicating with ghost-sucking vacuum backpack inventor Professor E. Gadd through a Virtual Boy (complete with a red-tinted interface and a joke about how "it'll sell millions"), among other examples, Luigi's latest adventure is downright funny.

Diablo 4 Art Book Leak Suggests Lilith Will Return

The Diablo 4 art book that was revealed in some pre-BlizzCon marketing has been leaked again, this time seemingly showing a page from within the book.

The page, posted on Twitter by World of Warcraft UI account WeakAuras, is focused on Lilith, the Succubus Queen who featured in Diablo 2's Pandemonium Event. A highlighted quote references that Lilith in Diablo 4 is a reimagining of the character, with a significantly different appearance to the one used for her in Diablo 2. The pose does little to contextualize Lilith's role in the Diablo 4, and so it's unknown if she will act as the game's primary antagonist, or just another boss on the path to (presumably) Diablo himself. If, indeed, Diablo 4 exists, of course.

Afterparty Review

I've never beaten him in a fiddle contest, but I'm sure glad I got to challenge Lucifer to a drinking competition in Night School Studio's second adventure game, Afterparty. The Oxenfree developers' descent into the underworld retains its formula of 2D exploration with near-constant conversation and Telltale-like dialogue choices while introducing a world of neon-soaked demonic alleyways and dive bars that look... well, like most do on Earth. But inside that over-the-top demonic shell is a deeply human, cuttingly honest, and frequently funny story about two best friends making it through one hell of a night.

Afterparty's tightly knit cast allows for more personal and affecting storytelling than what we saw in Oxenfree. Milo and Lola have, surprisingly, found themselves in Hell. Believing they've wrongly ended up surrounded by fire and brimstone for eternity, the duo ventures off to win a trip back to Earth by beating Satan in a drinking game. Should be easy enough, right?

SNL: Chance the Rapper Reports on League of Legends Tournament

Saturday Night Live host (and musical guest) Chance the Rapper brought back his clueless New York Knicks reporter character, Lazlo Holmes, who was last seen in November of 2017 trying his best to cover a hockey game.

This time around, Lazlo was thrown into the deep end of an esports event featuring arena battler League of Legends. Naturally, Lazlo was baffled by just about everything - from being asked his opinion on "Team Echo's attack strategy" to the amount of female fans flocking to meet iconic player S3X PANDA 99.

You can watch a snippet of the sketch here...

Struggling to describe some of the Legends footage, Holmes, befuddled, states "This game looks like how a seizure feels."

Fortnite Chapter 2 Leaker Sued by Epic Games

Epic Games is suing a UX tester for leaking details for Fortnite Chapter 2 ahead of its official release, according to new court documents.

As reported by Polygon, in a lawsuit filed to North Carolina courts Epic Games is accusing Ronald Sykes, or @inviiblellama9, or leaking information about Fortnite Chapter 2. In a court document, Epic says that the company is, "suing Sykes because he broke his contractual obligation to keep Epic's secrets about the upcoming season of Fortnite, Epic's popular video game."

Epic claims that information "is currency," and that Sykes "cashed in on what he learned as a User Experience tester for Epic." The company is asking for injunctive relief and maximum damages for the leaks and breach of a non-disclosure agreement, along with legal fees.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Single-Player Campaign Review

After taking a year off in 2018, Call of Duty's single-player campaign has come roaring back in the revival of the Modern Warfare name. For my money, this is the best campaign the series has seen since 2010's Black Ops; and if that sounds like a backhanded compliment, I don't mean it as one. Though it stops short of being as provocative and button-pushing as it seemed poised to be, it is nevertheless an extremely well-designed first-person shooter that refreshes the franchise format just enough with a few cool new ideas and some smart new takes on others we haven't seen in years.

The plot of Modern Warfare's rebooted storyline starts out trying to blur the lines between good and bad, but it ends up quickly establishing the good guys as very clearly good. The US team is led by memorably mustachioed fan-favorite Captain John Price, while the sister and brother duo of Farah and Hamir head up an insurgency movement fighting to push Russian forces out of their fictional home country of Urzikstan. That's right: it's cool to shoot at Russia again.

The Outer Worlds: Here's How Long It Takes To Beat

Today is launch day for The Outer Worlds, and as countless gamers start their journey into Obsidian's latest RPG, many of them are wondering how long it will last them. A few of us here at IGN have already burned through it, so here are our answers to that question.

Dan Stapleton, Reviewer

The clock on my save file read about 30 hours when I wrapped up the final mission, though it's important to remember that this number doesn't reflect the amount of time you spend between the most recent autosave and when you die. And though I sailed through the first half without many deaths, I then turned the difficulty up from Normal to Hard and found myself biting the dust fairly regularly if I didn't take my time when planning out a fight in advance. (In the interest of finishing in time for the review I ended up turning it back down to Normal for the final mission, which is not super easy!)

Pokemon Developers Don't Have Plans For More Let's Go Games

During a press tour ahead of the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield Game Freak producer and director Junichi Masuda revealed that there may not be more Pokemon Let's Go games in the series, but that might be because the studio prefers to work on new projects and games.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Masuda was asked that despite criticism regarding its easy difficulty reception to Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee was high. Despite this, Masuda revealed that there are currently no plans for more games in that particular Pokemon series.

Devolver's Carrion Gets Free Demo

Carrion, the "reverse horror" game from Phobia Studios and Devolver Digital, has just released a free demo.

Revealed by Devolver as "a Halloween treat," the demo is available on Steam (Windows only, sorry Mac/Linux users) and gives you a good taste of what it's like to play as Carrion's horrible tentacle monster. It's not as large as the demo we played at GamesCom, but it's an excellent introduction to this violent take on the MetroidVania.
