Dishonored 2: Messing Around With Emily's Crazy Powers

The sheer anticipation of seeing the next cool gadget, spectacular spell, or awe-inspiring environment can be a driving force on its own, and the most recent demo I played Dishonored 2 conjured that feeling up for me. If I were to sum up my latest turn with it in one sentence, it would be, "What will I see next?" The striking art style, Emily's crazy powers, and the spectacular transforming walls of the Clockwork Mansion all left me wondering what treats the rest of Dishonored 2 might have in store.

The mission I played, The Clockwork Mansion, takes place roughly half way through the game, tasking Emily or Corvo with two possible objectives: find and rescue your old friend Anton Sokolov and deal with his captor, Kirin Jindosh, whose clockwork mansion has more hidden rooms than Wayne Manor.  The original Dishonored was full of beautiful architecture, but the shifting walls in Jindosh's estate take things to a new level. With a single pull of the many levers I found throughout the area,  stair cases transformed, floors broke away, and walls did flip-flops, transforming the landscape around me. It felt like the kind of spectacle many games would save for a finale. If this is an environment halfway through the game, I can't even imagine what might follow or top it.

According to the DFDS blog, the ship was constructed to celebrate the company's 150th anniversary. Modeled after one of DFDS' real-life ferries, over 7,000 employees worked on the construction by assembling thousands of bricks made of 45 individual LEGO pieces.

NES Classic Is Budget-Priced NES-talgia...With a Catch

Nintendo's new mini-console, called the NES Classic, is an '80s-themed throwback for anyone who wants to play 30 of the best video games made for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It packs in truckloads of mostly-excellent classic games, including hits like Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, and Castlevania. Overall, it's an impressively lightweight system that outputs significantly better software emulation compared to Nintendo's current offerings. And it's available at a budget-friendly $59.99 USD, but there is one catch: The decision to use wired controllers, and not modify the iconic look of the NES, makes the user-end experience slightly clunky.

7 Things Resident Evil 7 Needs to Do to Win Me Over

Resident Evil 7 is just a few months away, and we still don't know what it actually looks like.

Capcom says the Beginning Hour demo is a "tone piece" designed to match the final "feel" of Resident Evil 7, and not an actual gameplay preview. The recent Lantern demo, available exclusively at conventions and private press appointments, is a section straight out of the game, but rather than give us a look at the "core" gameplay of Resident Evil 7, it pulls from one of the found footage sequences that Capcom has confirmed will be a recurring element.

Pokemon Go Launch Suffered Because it Had 50 Times More Traffic than Expected

Ever wondered why the Pokemon Go launch was plagued with problems? It's all down to ridiculously high traffic.

Stone says within just 15 minutes of Pokemon Go launching in Australia and New Zealand, traffic had already passed Niantic's initial predictions.

Blizzard is Finally Making Hearthstone Less Random

Hearthstone's most recent round of nerfs represents the first step towards a more consistent and competitively viable card game. Yogg Saron will now stop casting spells if it dies during it's effect and Tuskar Totemic can no longer summon Totem Golem. These changes may seem minor, but this is the first time in history of the game that a card has been changed to reduce the variance of it's random effects.

One of the biggest updates is the addition of four new starter farm maps, available on the character creation screen. Each map caters to specific skills sets: the Riverland Farm has plenty of fishing spots, the Forest Farm comes with more foraging areas and a special mixed seed-dropping weed, Hill-top Farm has mineral deposits for mining enthusiasts, and Wilderness Farm spawns Bats and Golems at night. Titanfall 2 Campaign’s First 3 Hours Are Intense

When Respawn wanted to build a full-blown single-player campaign for Titanfall 2, the first decision they made was to allow the player exit the Titan – however foolish that may be at times. But beyond that? There obviously wasn't much of a blueprint to follow from the first Titanfall, so Respawn's designers did something all good creators know how to do: they started playing with blocks.

Action blocks, that is.

Every week for six months, the developers in charge of campaign design were tasked with bringing a new idea to the collective table. It could be a weapon, a puzzle, a mechanic, a small section of a level. Anything, really, as long as it was small, simple, and playable. These "action blocks" were discarded or set aside when they weren't fun, but the ones that captured everyone's attention or sparked their imaginations were dissected and explored. They're only small ideas, sure, but six months of brainstorming is no small deal, and from what I saw, it seems to have paid off.

J.J. Abrams: A Portal Movie Announcement is Coming Soon

J.J. Abrams has confirmed the Portal and Half Life movies are still in development, and we can expect a Portal announcement "fairly soon".

Speaking to IGN on the Westworld red carpet (Abrams produces the HBO show), the filmmaker said both films were "still very much in development".

"We have a meeting coming up next week with Valve, we're very active, I'm hoping that there will be a Portal announcement fairly soon", said Abrams.

When we asked if the movies would follow on from the story-lines that already exist in the games, Abrams kept his cards close to his chest.

"We are having some really interesting discussions with writers, many of whom...once you said you're doing a movie or show about a specific thing that is a known quantity you start to find people who are rabid about these things. As someone who loves playing Half Life and Portal, what's the movie of this, it's incredible when you talk to someone who just 'gets' it, it's like, oh my god, it's really the seed for this incredible tree you're growing."

Yo-kai Watch 2 Fleshy Souls/Bony Spirits Review

Yo-kai Watch returns with a Pokemon-style set of dual sequels and one journey that aims to deepen the series' lore while retaining its quirky charms. And while Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits certainly succeed in that regard, they reuse both the same boring battle system and they both open with an unnecessary retread of the first Yo-kai Watch's plot. Though this sequel certainly adds plenty to the overall experience, it never really takes any steps to fix the gameplay issues that hampered its predecessor.

Splitting the sequel into two games with only minor differences (like unique Yo-kai to collect in each version) reflects a civil war going on in the world of the Yo-kai. Unfortunately, though the opening foreshadows that battle with an argument over doughnuts — yes, pastries are the crux of the conflict — the actual fight doesn't kick off until late in the 17-hour main campaign. Even then, the battle is over so quickly it made me question why the two factions were deserving of the title spots.

Ubisoft Won't Necessarily Release Assassin's Creed or Far Cry Games in 2017

When it was confirmed that there will be no Assassin's Creed game in 2016, most assumed that the series would be taking a single year off. This may not end up being the case — and Far Cry may also be going away for longer than expected.

"I'll tell you what," François said, "We believe Alpha for these games needs to be one year before release. We're trying to achieve that. That's super f****** blunt, I don't even know if I'm allowed to say this. This is the goal we're going for: Alpha one year before, more quality, more polish.

Significant Shaman Nerfs Coming To Hearthstone

In an official blog post outlining all the upcoming changes, Blizzard stated that they're "happy that Shaman has many deckbuilding options to choose from, but we are taking this opportunity to adjust two of the most widely played and frustrating Shaman cards."

The cards in question are Rockbiter Weapon and Tuskarr Totemic. The former is having its mana cost increased by one, and the latter is having its card text tweaked. The new Tuskarr will now only be able to randomly summon standard totems as opposed to special ones. In practical terms, this means that there will no longer be a chance of this low-cost minion minion summoning a board-dominating, and potentially game-ending totem to the field.

Destiny: Rise of Iron Review

In a lot of ways, Destiny: Rise of Iron is more of the same. When it does the Destiny formula well, it's polished with challenging combat and plenty for a veteran Guardian to do. A lot of the time, though, it falls into the same trap Destiny's always been susceptible to and turns into a seemingly endless, repetitive grind. It often feels empty, even with a challenging and satisfying raid dangling as a big incentive.

The new two-or-so-hour campaign is emblematic of how Rise of Iron as a whole stacks up. It definitely brings more of what I already like about Destiny, like taking on waves of spongy enemies in a series of fights that are all about your positioning in the area, but it does little to improve upon Destiny's strengths or fix its problems. The difficulty mostly comes from a mysterious, virus-like nanotechnology called SIVA enhancing the power of the Fallen, which obviously makes them harder to kill. The campaign relies heavily on the buffed Fallen to be challenging rather than doing anything we haven't seen from Destiny before.

These people then submit the feedback on players to EA. "We have many leagues in the game; no stats provider could offer us data for all these leagues, teams and players," Mueller-Moehring said. "This is also the reason why we use this online database, because it's not possible to buy this data some way -- it just doesn't exist."

Occasionally that speed works against you when unseen dangers come barreling in from offscreen a little too quickly to have a hope of avoiding them without knowing what's coming, but this is rare, and Fire and Ice helps compensate with generous checkpoints. Sonic's life-preserving ring system also works in your favor in these moments, instantaneously repositioning you at a point just before the trouble spot that caused a hit.

Hello, Here's a 50 Billion Pixel Screenshot of The Witness

It would take over 6,000 4K screens to display a single screenshot of The Witness taken by the fine people at Gigapixel Gaming. Why would anyone do this? I don't know. Am I glad they did? Most definitely.

Using Nvidia tool Ansel - which can capture screenshots in gigapixel chunks - they've created a 367200×130560 image of Jonathan Blow and Co's vibrant island landscape.

Jotun Developers Announce New Game, Sundered

Thunder Lotus Games, the studio behind Jotun, revealed Sundered, its newest game.

Similar to its predecessor, Sundered has a focus on boss battles and retains the eye-catching, hand-drawn art style that helped make Jotun stand out in a crowded field of indies.

Using what it learned from Jotun, Thunder Lotus has built a game it says has "infinite replayability" and the non-linear gameplay "of the Metroidvania genre."

"Sundered is a horrifying fight for survival and sanity," according to Thunder Lotus Games' description. In it, you play as Eshe, a "wanderer in a ruined world," of  "everchanging caverns."

The game has multiple endings, "massive boss fights," and a procedurally generated world, according to Thunder Lotus. It also has "corruptible abilities," meaning there's a tradeoff in using them.

What Ico Did That No Game Has Done Since

In the 15 years since Ico was released on the PlayStation 2, video games have evolved in remarkable ways. The HD-era has ushered in photo-realistic visuals, ubiquitous online play has connected people worldwide from all walks of life and the rise of indies has given a voice and a platform to even the smallest of teams. But in the countless games that have come out in the past decade and a half, somehow none have managed to replicate the simple power of one of Ico's basic mechanics -- the act of holding on to someone else's hand.

There's so much about Ico that's stuck with me since I first played the game in 2001 -- its gorgeous aesthetic, subtle and silent storytelling, and its melancholy ending. But if I'm being perfectly honest, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Fumito Ueda's classic is the subtle intimacy between Ico and Yorda that comes across via holding on to the princess' hand during quiet moments, and the darkest of situations, which is something that I can safely say all of us have experienced at some point throughout our lives.

Someone Made No Man's Sky Inside Classic Doom

No Man's Sky took years to be finished, but it subsequently inspired No Guy's Sky - a Doom mod that took just three weeks to make.

Modder Robert Prest worked on the project by himself, taking plenty of code from DoomZ, another mod he is making based on DayZ.

Everything in No Guy's Sky is randomly generated, including "scenery, sky, floor, plans and aliens," says Prest on his website (where those who want to give it a try can find installation instructions).

As you can see from the video, you have a jetpack, a mining tool, and you can go from planet to planet on your spaceship.

The aliens are generated in a "flipbook style" with different legs, heads, and so on. He even says you can mod it to put your own face in, and that quickly becomes apparent when he comes across an alien which has the face of Hello Games' Sean Murray.

Virginia Review

The first thing we see in Virginia's opening shot is a woman sliding a key into a locked box. The camera cuts away before we get to see what's inside, gracefully setting the tone for the haunting, enigmatic tale to follow.

What's most impressive about the interactive story that unfolds across Virginia's emotionally compelling two hours is the depth of character and absorbing mystery it builds without a single line of dialogue. While there were times I wished I could break away from my limited role in its story, Virginia's soaring symphonic score and brisk cinematic pace are so dense with drama that I was usually happy to play my part just to get the next piece of this beautifully crafted narrative puzzle.

Mount & Blade: Warband Review

Graphics aren't everything - but they're something. The sandbox-style RPG Mount & Blade: Warband is perhaps best compared to a work like the Bayeux Tapestry, a 230-foot long strip of cloth in northern France detailing one of the landmark events of the European Middle Ages. Background details barely show up at all, the people look two generations removed from Gumby, and the weavers couldn't even keep the lines on the border straight. Yet it's stunning to behold. Some parts look like kindergartners made it, but it has soul and heart, and its images remain better embedded in my memory than some of the busy masterworks of the renaissance.

Mount & Blade: Warband, which is likewise focused on a medieval setting, feels a little like that. It already looked a decade old when it first came out on PC in 2010 (and recieved a review score of 8.1), and some minor updates to its Xbox One and PlayStation 4 release do little to make it look remotely modern. Slight variations on the same eight or so ugly faces populate its six kingdoms. Knights and peasants alike jank about like robots. Details like grass often vanish when you're just a few yards away, and tricky gamepad controls sometimes become annoying. And yet for all that, this remains a roleplaying game that does a better job of conveying the rags-to-riches journey than a game like Skyrim.

'Fantastic' Nintendo NX Will Offer 'Different Experience' to Other Consoles - Ubisoft CEO

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has furthered claims that Nintendo's next console, codenamed NX, will stand apart from Microsoft and Sony's home consoles.

Speaking to IGN at an Ubisoft event yesterday, Guillemot - who has previously expressed his admiration for the upcoming console - explained specifically why he was excited for NX:

"I think, once again, the interface is very attractive," he said. "It's a machine that will be easy to use for all gamers. They have built in something that will give us chance to really have a different experience from what exists today. That's what I like - that they come with something new that is adapted to what we actually want now."

Destiny: Rise of Iron Review in Progress

After a few months away from Destiny, I spent my first day with Rise of Iron as if I were joining anew. I was curious; how would a new player jumping into Rise of Iron via the Destiny Collection fare? It might take a bit to learn the difference between character level and Light level, sure, but I was immediately impressed by how quickly it brought me up to speed without sacrificing a challenge for the veteran Guardian. That aside, the new two-or-so-hour campaign feels short compared to its actual plot and doesn't really introduce new mechanics to Destiny — it's plenty of fun and has more of everything I already like about Destiny's story missions, but it also does little to improve upon its strengths or fix its problems.

How Dark Souls Made It Fun to Fail

Dark Souls is five years old today, and even in this short time its legacy and influence has been great enough to leave a lasting impression on gaming that will live on for decades. Building on a formula first presented in From Software's Demon's Souls, Dark Souls is a game known for challenging players in ways few other games do.

From this notorious difficulty, it's given life to entire communities dedicated to helping one another or making it harder for one another. It's fueled debates about difficulty vs. accessibility, dared the internet to complete it together via chat commands, spawned countless "Souls-like" indie games that aim to capture some of that legendary challenge for themselves, and is one of my personal favorite games of all time.

Rocket League Heads Underwater With Next Update

Rocket League's next free update, Aquadome, is coming in October.

The underwater update includes a free water-themed arena, and will release alongside two premium DLC Battle-cars, Proteus and Triton, both of which cost $1.99 a pop.

In the meantime, September's Rocket League DLC takes the form of Rumble – a new mode that adds extravagant power-ups into the mix, such as being able to kick an opponent's car, forcing your opposition to lose control, a grappling hook, a ball puncher (not what you're thinking), and many more.

Iceland Not in FIFA 17 Due to Low Offer by EA

Iceland won't be in this year's version of FIFA, because EA didn't offer its football association enough money.

According to the BBC, Iceland's FA (KSI) said EA's offer of $15,000 was "below their expectations."

Iceland's exclusion will come as a surprise to many, especially following their strong run at this year's Euro 2016 tournament in which they knocked out England. Iceland has never appeared in the game before.

"They are the ones buying these rights and they almost want it for free," said KSI president Geir Thorsteinsson to the BBC. "The performance at the Euros show that we are quite a good team and many would like to play with our team. It's sad for the players - but the criticism should be towards EA Sports."

Support Ceases for Pokemon Fan Project Pokémon Uranium

Support for a Pokémon fan project, Pokémon Uranium, has ceased.

After nine years in development, the fan-made RPG has more than 100 original Pokémon, complete with a new region and a new Uranium type.

While download links were removed from the website following takedown notices filed against the team's website host shortly after launch, online support for those who'd managed to download the game continued by way of updates and patches.

According to an update today, however, all support has now stopped.

DC Universe Online Going Through a Rebirth of Its Own

Daybreak Games has laid out some major changes coming to DC Universe Online's combat.

The core changes, as revealed on the DCUO forums, are as follows:

  • Removing combat rating differential
  • Smoothing out how you gain stats over the course of your character's life
  • Redistributing where stats come from
  • Revamping stat-related skill points

The removal of Combat Rating Differential is sure to be a welcome change. While the idea of having enemies scale up and down around your level is sound in principle, in practice many players were left feeling underpowered when starting new tiers of content.

FIFA 17 Review

FIFA 17's headline feature is The Journey, a story about a prodigious young talent attempting to make a name for himself in the Premier League. It's a microcosm of everything that's good and bad about FIFA – peerless presentation surrounding a match engine that's an improvement on last year, but still needs work – and yet it's the most fun I've had with the series for a good few seasons. Perhaps more importantly, it's a welcome reminder of the personal stories at the heart of a sport (and a series) that, in recent times, has felt more concerned with its corporate identity. It's not easy to find ways to surprise people in an annualised game, but this is a very pleasant one.

The story of likeable 17-year-old Alex Hunter and his rise from unvarnished academy product to bright young starlet follows a conventional path – not quite rags to riches, but close – though it's affectingly told, even if FIFA 17's PEGI rating ensures that it's a rather airbrushed take on the modern game. Still, the setbacks and insults sting – on his debut as a substitute the opposition fans taunt him with a chant of "who are ya?" while you'll attract social media criticism from supporters and fellow professionals (at one stage, an embittered ex-teammate hashtags you as a #benchwarmer). Naturally, this only made me all the more determined to succeed.

ReCore Patch Will Improve Load Times on Xbox One

A patch dedicated to reducing ReCore's load times on Xbox One will be released this week.

As noted on the game's official website, load times for larger areas, however, "may continue to take more time than expected," even after the patch is deployed.

"We want you to know that we've been listening closely, and the number one thing you've mentioned you'd like to see improvements on is load times," the post says. "We heard you, we appreciate your patience."

Upon its release last week, ReCore's lengthy load times were criticized, as noted in IGN's review, which said the load times often broke up the game's pace.

Blizzard Dropping Battle.net Name, Focusing on Brand

Blizzard Entertainment's online gaming service, long known as battle.net, will now be known simply as Blizzard tech.

According to an update on the World of Warcraft website, the change is in name, and name alone. The core technology behind Battle.net will "continue to serve as the central nervous system for Blizzard games," Blizzard said.

Battle.net has been around for a long time. The original version of the service launched nearly 20 years ago, on November 30, 1996. Over the years, Blizzard said, the name has caused "confusion and inefficiencies," since it doesn't easily convey itself as Blizzard's online service.

Microsoft Exec: PS4 Pro Not Powerful Enough to Run True 4K

Microsoft's Albert Penello claims the PS4 Pro's 4.2 teraflops of power isn't enough to render 'true 4K' natively.

In an interview with Eurogamer, he said "I think there are a lot of caveats they're giving customers right now around 4K. They're talking about checkerboard rendering and up-scaling and things like that. There are just a lot of asterisks in their marketing around 4K, which is interesting because when we thought about what spec we wanted for Scorpio, we were very clear we wanted developers to take their Xbox One engines and render them in native, true 4K.

Miyazaki Not Ruling Out Working on "Dark Souls-Like" Games

Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has previously said that, for him, "Dark Souls is over", but has said that another From Software developer could convince him that they deserve to make another. That doesn't seem quite like the end of the story, however.

In an interview with IGN at Tokyo Game Show, Miyazaki explained that while he doesn't feel like making another Dark Souls game right now, that doesn't rule out the idea of using the iconoclastic series' ideas elsewhere:

"It doesn't necessarily mean he's not going to work on a Dark Souls-like game," explained a translator, "so he would definitely bring some of the good things - that could be some in-game elements, some of the product development experience - he would definitely bring those to a new Dark Souls-like game or Dark Souls-like franchise in the future."
