God of War Includes Infinity Gauntlet Easter Egg

God of War hides an incredible Avengers: Infinity War-themed Easter Egg, letting Kratos use his own Norse Infinity Gauntlet similarly to Thanos.

The secret was published on the God of War Reddit by user Moxxxxxi who put the pieces together. Players can find a talisman called the "Shattered Gauntlet of Ages" during the "Family Business" quest given by Sindri. The description heralds an untapped power hidden within the gauntlet.

"An ancient relic of Hel deemed too powerful to remain whole, fragments of its former strength lie scattered throughout the realms," reads the description for the talisman.

On Kotaku's spoiler-filled Splitscreen podcast, Barlog talks about making the new God of War game and his plans for future titles.

When asked how far into the future of God of War is mapped out in his head, Barlog simply replies "Five games."

There's no release date yet, but we have compiled all the news, trailers, and rumors (no gameplay yet!) about Cyberpunk 2077 in the lead-up to launch – in particular, the possibility that Cyberpunk 2077 will be shown at E3 2018.

Nintendo to Working on New Redesign of Joy-Con for Switch

Not long after the release of the Nintendo Switch last year, many users began noticing connection issues with the left Joy-Con controller. As found in a new filing with the Federal Communications Commission, it appears as though Nintendo is finally addressing the issue by releasing an entirely new iteration of the Joy-Con controller.

Nintendo has been working on a fix for the Joy-Con for some time now, with a variety of software fixes through numerous firmware updates. However, the issue itself mainly concerns the placement of the antenna housed inside of the left Joy-Con controller. That said, there's only so much that software updates can do to help. So an internal redesign of the Joy-Con appears to be Nintendo's best bet for an actual fix.

Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery Players Upset With Use of Microtransactions

The Harry Potter mobile RPG launched last week, but its gameplay mechanics and microtransactions have prompted a backlash.  Some players are criticizing the developers for microtransaction tactics that younger players might be particularly susceptible to.

Central to Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is the energy system, which is built up through performing tasks, and is used up in challenges. Energy can recharge if players wait, and waiting will also move the story along if they don't want to spend money on microtransactions to expedite the process. The problem is that waiting times are perceived to be too long, and events are seemingly rigged by design to have players spend money in-game.

The Witcher 3 HDR Patch Hurts Quality on PS4 Pro

The Witcher 3's HDR patch isn't working out quite as well as planned on the PlayStation 4 Pro, and has brought some visual downgrades with it.

The patch rolled out last month but Digital Foundry has discovered that update 1.61 has had some adverse effects when playing in 4K on the PS4 Pro.

It seems that the patch has affected draw distance and shadows of foliage, and the issues are present in SDR on the PS4 Pro as well, suggesting that the result is unintentional. The problem isn't echoed on the Xbox One X according to Digital Foundry, so hopefully CD Projekt RED will release a fix in the near future.

What Nintendo's New President Means for Switch

We recently reported on the news that Shuntaro Furukawa will be taking over for Tatsumi Kimishima as president of Nintendo in June.

But what does this mean for Nintendo -- and for the Switch? Well, let's take a look.

Furukawa takes over at Nintendo with the company in a much different place than it was in just a few years ago. When Kimishima took over after the untimely death of Satoru Iwata in 2015, it was a shift during perhaps one of the most telling times in the company's history. After the rocket success that Iwata led the company to during the Wii and DS eras, the Wii U went on to be one of the worst selling products in Nintendo history. Now, Furukawa takes the reins of a Nintendo in a much better position. The Switch is a sales monster, even managing to surpass early sales of the Wii.

Nintendo Labo Robot Kit Review

It's hard not to balk at the $80 price tag on a package that contains mostly cardboard, but the bigger and more elaborate Robot Kit is a step in the right direction for Nintendo's new kid-aimed concoction. While the Variety Kit (review) is mostly a package of fun but limited ideas, the Robot Kit shows off the goofy potential of what Labo might do with future kits with a more elaborate toy that makes its simple game a whole-body experience.

Of the two kits available at launch, the Robot Kit is by far the most complex and challenging individual Toy-Con to assemble. It takes an adult roughly four hours to build, and longer with kids pitching in. But once assembled, the clever backpack-like device contains a series of weighted cardboard bricks, each of which is tethered by a string to your hands and feet. When you extend one of your limbs, it pulls the string and hoists the brick upward, allowing the inserted Joy-Con's IR camera to read the reflective markings on the back and send that info to the Switch to control an on-screen robot. Finally, there's a cardboard visor strapped to your head to complete the look and add a view-switching option.

Elder Scrolls Online's Summerset Expansion Makes ESO Feel Fresh Again

If The Elder Scrolls Online's previous expansion, Morrowind, could be summed up in a single word it'd be "nostalgia." The island of Vvardenfell was realized in gorgeous HD for the first time, almost exactly 15 years after The Elder Scrolls III first launched.

Now with its latest expansion, Summerset, ESO is taking a decidedly different approach when it releases on May 21st for PC and June 5th for Xbox One and PS4 by letting players visit the beautiful region of the high elves, the Summerset Isles, for the first time – well, unless you count its brief appearance in 1994's The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Nintendo Switch Online Services Will Be Explained in More Detail Next Month

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Hands-On Preview

In 2013's iteration of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft was driven by urgency, and most of her decisions were reactive. She responded to drama, or conflict, or struggle only because she had to, not because she was driven to by her ambitions. Five real-world years later, in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara Croft has evolved into someone who's narcissistic, and destructive, and obsessed with finding the next treasure, or the next artifact that defines her importance. She'll go far enough to ignore her allies, even if it means starting a war - even an apocalypse - all by herself, because the race to win is more important than anything else.

With that, I think the title of 2018's addition to the Tomb Raider franchise makes a lot more sense than it did to me initially. This is seemingly intended to be Lara Croft's darkest story, with the beloved protagonist realizing there's a human cost to what she previously thought just involved 'raiding tombs', and that destruction follows her for a reason. According to the Narrative Director at Eidos Montreal, an increase in drama and tension with her allies was a huge focus of the game, too. This is the Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the dive into the darker parts of her personality, and the confrontation of how her flippant attitude toward messing with historically, culturally significant artifacts can influence everyone, not just her alone.

Why Battle Royale Is the Right Game Mode to Copy

Battle royale is the latest trend that's been sweeping across the games industry. In most examples of the growing genre, 100 players are dropped into a zone where they must find loot and kill each other off solo or as a squad as the size of the map gradually shrinks. Though PUBG is the game that really kicked things off when it was released in Steam Early Access last year, it's since been aped by Epic's Fortnite Battle Royale, a game that has gradually become a juggernaut in its own right. While everyone was quick to write Fortnite off as a shameless copycat, it's very quickly proven to be its own thing, striking a particular chord with gamers after it went free to play. It's even managed to get celebrities like Drake to catch the fever.

Nintendo Labo Variety Kit Review

Nintendo's new line of cardboard "build, play, and discover experiences" is aimed at "those who are young and young at heart." The $70 Labo Variety Kit definitely fulfills the first part of that promise: in the hands of a child, its five buildable toys take on an entirely new dimension that blends the digital and physical worlds of play. For the average adult, though, building can be tedious and not particularly challenging, and the games you play and activities you do with these fragile toys mostly lack real substance.

As a concept, Labo's DIY accessories are particularly interesting for a few different reasons: There's a hint of alchemy that Nintendo has created by mixing both the digital and physical worlds of play, but there's also a pretty big educational element to it. Not only does Labo let you build fun things like pint-sized cardboard pianos, it also provides a ton of insight into the technology behind how these bizarre accessories work because you have to assemble them piece by piece.

PUBG: How Battle Royale Was Born

The advantages of including your name in the title of a massively successful game cannot be overstated, a fact only Sid Meier and PlayerUnkown are intimately aware of. Sid Meier's titular signature always struck me as a bit self-congratulatory, and the same could be said for PlayerUnkown, but there is a valid reason for their inclusion.

In the case of PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds, the name confers legitimacy and ownership. Brendan Greene created Arma 2 DayZ Battle Royale, Arma 3 Battle Royale, and consulted on H1Z1 King of the Kill. But Battlegrounds isn't a mod, nor is it another developer's work, PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds is a manifestation of Greene's uncompromised vision.

Fortnite Players' Latest Meteor Theory Is Wild

Fortnite Battle Royale players have been getting ready for a meteor to hit the game map for months now, but one Reddit theory thinks it isn't a meteor at all: it's an alien mothership.

As pointed out by Eurogamer, Reddit user Kensyys thinks people have had it wrong this whole time. While the focus has been on Fortnite's insanely popular Battle Royale mode, the meteor has also been visible in the PvE Save the World mode, and more potential clues there point toward aliens.

The Belgian Gaming Commission has ruled that some loot boxes are illegal, following a similar decision recently made by the Netherlands.

"The games with paid loot boxes, as currently offered in our country, are therefore in violation of the gaming legislation and can be dealt with under criminal law," reads the statement. "The loot boxes must therefore also be removed."

BattleTech Review

Rocket boosting a 60-ton mech to the top of mountain then raining down missiles on your enemy will never not be cool. At the same time, seeing every single piece of that salvo miss the one body part you were actually aiming for is pretty much the polar opposite of satisfaction. Such are the highs and lows of BattleTech, a turn-based tactics game that has as much exciting flavor as it does an overreliance on infuriating random-number generation.

BattleTech is an old and iconic franchise that began on the tabletop, where it spurred the creation of video game series like MechWarrior and MechAssault with its giant walking tanks. Here, in a turn-based setting in which you control a highly customizable lance of four mechs, it feels at home. It's a thoughtful game that encourages careful planning in both the composition of your mech fighting force and the shots you tell them to take, but some design missteps often rob the execution of that planning of much of its potential impact.

Frostpunk Review

Frostpunk combines the best elements of survival, city-building, and 4X games into one of the more captivating strategy games I've played in a while. Thanks to stellar presentation and storytelling, it seamlessly combines these different components into one interesting experience that never feels like a burden to play, even when the difficulty of maintaining a colony during an oppressive ice age ratchets up.

Frostpunk sets the stage with a compelling and timely backstory in which climate change devastates humanity in the late 1800s. Those left alive must seek out the few remaining resources as they attempt to carve out the last city on Earth. It's not a hopeful tale, but one that effectively communicates the challenges that lie ahead and sets the stage for some difficult and desperate decisions.

The Best Space Opera Movies (That Aren't Star Wars)

Let's be honest here: When most of us think of space operas, we're really thinking of Star Wars. And with good cause! Star Wars took the oft-maligned genre of the space opera - essentially, an adventurous melodrama in set in outer space and/or on distant planets - and found just the right way to take it seriously. George Lucas took the fantastical locales, costumes and weapons from the old Flash Gordon serials and filtered them through World War II "men on a mission" films (complete with space Nazis), epic samurai dramas and Western fantasy tropes to create a world that was both alien and lived in. You can really believe in the world of Star Wars. That's why it endures to this day.

I asked David what makes Detroit different from a Telltale game, too, and mentioned how gamers had been burned by the 'every choice matters' sales pitch we keep getting from publishers. God of War Patch Lets Players Make Text Bigger

Santa Monica Studio has released a patch for God of War that gives players the option to increase the game's text size.

"We just released a new patch that focuses on text for map, goals, codex and the resources tab of the UI menus," the studio said in response to a fan on Twitter who noted it's difficult to read the on-screen text when playing on the couch.

Players who wish to increase the text size can do so using the newly added slider found in the "Accessibility" menu.

That said, it appears the slider doesn't entirely fix the problem. A number of users, particularly those who don't have a 4K display and are sitting relatively far away from the screen, have found the slider doesn't resolve the issue. As noted by Kotaku, turning up the slider magnifies the text rather than actually increasing the font size.
