Abzu Review

Abzu creates one of the most relaxing, stress-free underwater experiences I've ever played. By emphasizing freedom of movement over survival, it gave me all the time I needed to soak in its gorgeous art direction, marvel at its fluid controls, and listen to its epic orchestral score. During the course of this fascinating three-hour adventure full of deep-sea mysteries and discoveries, its moving melodies ebbed and flowed with my emotions and fueled my curiosity to reach the finale, even when the story lacked context. What you actually do along the way is a little light on gameplay, but it's still a spectacular journey worth taking.

Revisiting the Much Maligned Final Fantasy II

Final Fantasy has always been something of a divisive series, not just in terms of those that like it and those that outright don't, but also within its own fan base. The reason for this is simple: Each new core entry is essentially a reboot, bringing forth a raft of thematic and systematic changes that can just as easily alienate fans of prior releases as much as they can thrill.

And alienating, in particular, did 1988's Final Fantasy II's changes prove to be, seeing it stand all these years later as one of the least divisive entries and for all the wrong reasons. It's forever found languishing at the bottom of folks' lists when it comes to customary discussions on series favourites - even IGN's - with its levelling system a particular sore point for many.

Japan Focus Distracted Microsoft, Says Former Xbox Boss

Ever since the launch of the original Xbox, Microsoft has struggled to gain a foothold in Japan, and according to former Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach, there wasn't much the company could have done differently to make a bigger splash in that market.

"It's just a question of focus," Bach explained on the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered. "And it's a question of where you have assets and where you don't have assets. And we had no assets in Japan," he added, noting the company "didn't have relationships with Japanese game developers" aside from "a few isolated ones" for games like Ninja Gaiden, which "were actually more popular in the West than they were in Japan."
