2017 turned out to be a fantastic year for horror games. A beloved old franchise returned to its roots in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The 2015 hit SOMA finally launched on Xbox One and unveiled its all-new Safe Mode, making it a great time for new players to dive in. More than a handful of smaller indie gems shined through the big-name franchises, and a few even housed secrets darker than we could've imagined.

Dauntless: Frostfall Update Brings Wintry Monster Slaying

All month long we're highlighting cool games that might not be on your radar, as part of IGN First: Games to Watch in 2018.

Today you monster-slaying PC players out there can get a first glimpse at the new wintertime content update coming to Dauntless, dubbed the Frostfall update.

The Frostfall seasonal event kicks off on Dec 19th until early January! The update adds a ton of new content, and revitalizes a bunch of existing features, all while coating the world in a wintry, holiday vibe, so you can deck the halls whilst decking large, angry behemoths.

Frostfall introduces new hunts and quests, exclusive rewards, expanded character creator options, and a bunch more.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Open Beta Announced

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is getting an open beta next month in North America and Europe.

Square Enix announced on Twitter the beta will run from January 12 to January 21. More details about the beta will be revealed closer to its launch.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus Announced for Switch

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 Plus has been announced for Nintendo Switch.

Bandai Namco revealed it will bring the revamped classic to the console/handheld hybrid February 22.

The game includes Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, which contains a number of gameplay modes, including Score Attack and Adventure modes. It also includes an exclusive two-player co-op mode called Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 PLUS 2P.

In Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 PLUS 2P, players will team up to tackle mazes with a friend, take down hordes of ghosts or even giant ghosts, utilizing special co-op moves to add to the strategy.

Ubisoft Giving Away Three Free Games for PC This Holiday

Update: Ubisoft has announced it's extending its Happy Playdays giveaway and adding Watch Dogs to the selection of PC games available for free for a limited time.

World in Conflict (and its Soviet Assault expansion), Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs will be available to download for free from December 18-23.

Ubisoft is giving away Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and World in Conflict for PC this holiday season.

The games are free for all PC owners with a Ubisoft account, and will be available on a special Ubisoft giveaway site for a limited time. World in Conflict and its Soviet Assault expansion will be free on PC from December 4-11. Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will be available from December 11-18.

Xbox's Crimson Skies Deserved a Sequel, Says EP

Mitch Gitelman, who served as an executive producer on Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge at FASA Studio, believes the Xbox title should have received a sequel.

"High Road to Revenge deserved a sequel. That team deserved a sequel," Gitelman said on the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered.

However, Microsoft wanted to have each development team work on a single game, and since FASA Studio was juggling multiple franchises at once, the Crimson Skies series did not continue. "At the time, Microsoft decided, and Shane Kim specifically decided, that each studio would focus on just one game—and we were doing Shadowrun and Crimson Skies simultaneously, and still working on MechAssault and stuff—and just collapsed it all down," Gitelman said.
