Rock Band Guitar Peripheral Maker Mad Catz Files for Bankruptcy

After a difficult period of decline, peripheral maker Mad Catz has filed for bankruptcy.

Mad Catz "has been unable to find a satisfactory solution to its cash liquidity problems," according to former boss Karen McGinnis.

Troubles became apparent last year when Mad Catz announced lay-offs during its financial report following Rock Band 4 sell-through numbers being lower than expected. Those low numbers triggered a company-wide restructuring, part of which included a 37% reduction of its workforce.

The day before its financial briefing, several Mad Catz officials resigned from their positions with the company.

Legendary Soccer Player Suing Konami

Retired Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona has filed a suit against Konami for using his likeness without permission in its Pro Evolution Soccer 2017.

The footballer made the announcement on his official Facebook page, saying his lawyer "will initiate the corresponding legal actions" against Konami.

Maradona is now retired, and says his likeness is being used for the game without his permission.

"I hope this isn't another scam," he wrote.

The Italian government announced in 2009 Maradona owed the country €37 million in unpaid taxes, over half of which is interest incurred on the original amount.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild Patch Reduces Framerate Problems

The newly-released 1.1.1 patch for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild seemingly removes or reduces the severity of many of the game's dips in framerate, on Wii U and Switch (in both handheld and docked mode).

Nintendo's notes for the 167MB patch simply read: "Adjustments have been made to make for a more pleasant gaming experience." However, players on Twitter (including our own Zelda reviewer), RedditNeoGAF, and YouTube have all reported improved performance since installing the update.

Hearthstone: Catch Up on the Un'Goro Card Reveals

Hearthstone's next expansion, Journey to Un'Goro, will be with us in a week, and we've now seen almost half the 135 card set. It's a little hard to say how the meta is going to change as a result, but one thing's for sure - Blizzard has introduced some pretty interesting new concepts and mechanics. Every class, for instance, has a legendary Quest card, and if you fulfil the requirements of the quest you'll get a pretty epic - and unique - reward. Crucially, the one mana Quest cards will always be in your opening hand (unless you mulligan it away) so you can build your deck around the quest and get started right away.

We've also seen a bunch of cards with the new Adapt keyword, which functions a little like Discover. Players are presented with three choices, drawn from a pool of ten, and whatever they choose is then instantly applied to the base card. The idea is that players can adapt to the situation at hand, and it's certainly a pretty awesome concept.

Bioshock Creator Compares New Game to a "Much More Ambitious" Shadow of Mordor Nemesis System

Ken Levine has discussed some of the influences and comparisons with his as-yet-untitled first game for new studio, Ghost Story.

The creator of Bioshock has previously said that his new project aims to be a replayable narrative game, and cited Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System (which had NPCs remember and react to your actions in it open world) as the sort of direction he'd like to take it in.

In an onstage interview at EGX Rezzed in London, Levine once again brought up the action-RPG as an inspiration, but added that his new game would take the idea of a reactive narrative much further:

Here's Where Every Characters Is in Game of Thrones' New Trailer

HBO has released a new trailer showcasing what to expect when Games of Thrones' seventh season debuts on July 16.

Warning: Major spoilers for Games of Thrones season 6 and minor spoilers for the upcoming season 7 to follow.

The trailer shows what's become the three main characters of HBO's fantasy drama walking through the empty halls of castles and keeps, before ascending their respective thrones or seats of authority.

What's interesting is that while we know Jon Snow is in Winterfell, and takes his place at the head of the table in the great hall, and Cersei, the newly crowned queen of the Seven Kingdoms takes her place on the Iron Throne in the Red Keep at King's Landing, we see a new location for Daenerys Targaryen, First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, and Khaleesi of the Great Green Sea.

How Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Powerful Nostalgia Connected Me to My Mother

The first game I ever played was The Legend of Zelda on NES. Well, I wasn't really playing.

My mom, who passed away in 2009, would play, handing me a second controller while she explored Hyrule. And as I've returned to a different, but equally as mysterious version of that world in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I am brought back to those early days of a scrolling, 8-bit Hyrule. One that seemed so filled with danger, but one that, with my mother, we could tackle together.

As I've explored more of Breath of the Wild's Hyrule, which lends itself to its own unique type of multiplayer, I am struck by how similarly the adventures unfold, full of mystery and agency that makes the experience feel so tailor-made to me. And the further I dive into its secrets, the more I wonder what my mom would have thought of Breath of the Wild.

"Our hypothesis was that after a trauma, patients would have fewer intrusive memories if they got to play Tetris as part of a short behavioral intervention while waiting in the hospital Emergency Department," said Emily Holmes, a professor of psychology at Karolinska.

Persona 5 Review

In stark contrast to the slow burn of epic-length cutscenes that greet you in previous Persona games, Persona 5 starts its long journey with a bang by throwing you directly into a fast-paced foot chase through a vibrant, stylized Tokyo casino. That's a bold move, and it's emblematic of the entire experience. As we're introduced to the complex yet approachable turn-based battle system in those opening moments, series fans will recognize not only returning systems from Persona 3 and 4, but also long-absent elements like ranged weapons and negotiation that haven't been in a Persona game in over a decade, adding more depth and variety to combat. Persona 5 is the culmination of everything the JRPG series has been building to, with familiar elements dialed up to 11 and some welcome new surprises added into the mix.

Rocket League Dev on Game's Growth, Future Plans

One of the biggest challenges facing Rocket League developer Psyonix, according to the studio's Vice President Jeremy Dunham, is keeping up with the pace of the game's rapid growth.

"It's been both flattering and a whole bunch of work because every time we think we've hit some sort of plateau or maybe the game is settling down, our community shows us, no, it's not even close yet," he explained. Shadowverse: Talking Tempest of the Gods with Cygames

I've had a blast playing Shadowverse over the last year. Developed by Tokyo-based Cygames (a studio well-known in Japan for its hits Rage of Bahamut and Granblue Fantasy) this anime-infused card game takes cues from Magic the Gathering and Hearthstone, but is ultimately gratifyingly unique. That's partly because of its innovative Evolution gameplay mechanic, but also because every class has a very defined identity driven by bespoke resources and abilities. In this game, combo decks and super greedy control decks are alive and well.

To get an insight into Shadowverse as a whole, but more specifically, the goals and design process behind its third expansion, Tempest of the Gods, which is available from tomorrow, I sat down with Lead Game Designer (and former Magic the Gathering pro) Naoyuki Miyashita and Card Designer Yuichiro Sato. Decoding Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix's Titles

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix releases today for the PlayStation 4, and contains, in one form or another, six Kingdom Hearts games. However, what each of those games actually is, and what their titles mean, may be confusing for newcomers picking up the collection.

Even the collection's title itself might sound confusing to those uninitiated with the franchise — wouldn't Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 just be Kingdom Hearts 4? Well, no, because we're still waiting on Kingdom Hearts 3, but the title represents that this is a combination of two previous collections — Kingdom Hearts 1.5 ReMix and Kingdom Hearts 2.5 ReMix. Each collection contained two fully remastered games each, as well as a watchable, cinematic remastering of one game each. All six of those entires are included in 1.5 + 2.5.

Everything You Need to Know About Persona 5

When asked on the latest episode of our interview show IGN Unfiltered where he thinks the RPG genre is heading in the next five or ten years, Garriot replied by discussing where he thinks all genres are headed. "One of my pessimisms about the gaming industry is a problem that is created by the success of the increase in CPU power due to Moore's Law," he said.

Psyonix 'Evaluating' Whether to Bring Rocket League to Switch

Since its launch in 2015, Psyonix's Rocket League has seen growth in both the platforms it's available on as well as in its continually growing user base. So how likely is it to see the rocket-powered soccer game come to the Nintendo Switch?

Speaking to IGN, Psyonix Studios' Vice President Jeremy Dunham said that the studio behind the game is "evaluating" the possibility and the various factors involved, including true community demand and technical limitations, in bringing the game to a new platform.

"Just like all the other platforms, we are evaluating it. We're looking to see what the technical requirements are," Dunham said. "We're looking to see what kind of true community demand there is. We're looking to see how it would benefit the community as a whole. So we're still in that evaluation phase. It's definitely too early to say that it wouldn't happen, but it's also definitely too early to say that it would."

The Walking Dead - A New Frontier Episode 3 Review

Telltale Games' third season of The Walking Dead continues the trend of the two-part season premiere, exploring its themes of family through the strong lens of its new protagonist, Javi. And though A New Frontier continues to do right by its lead, the narrative problems of the two-part premiere persist in this good but not quite great mid-season episode.

After making such a sympathetic protagonist in Clementine for two seasons, A New Frontier continues to find unique ways of making Javi equally likeable. "Above the Law" kicks off with yet another look at Javi's life in the early days of the outbreak. Watching Javi take charge of his brother David's family feels as vital to his story as anything in the present-day storyline. These flashbacks are some of the series' quieter moments, sure, but they can offer greater impact than any of the franchise's most bombastic scenes.

Outlast 2 Developer Clears Up Australian Ratings Confusion

Outlast 2 developer Red Barrels has clarified that Outlast 2's recent classification snag in Australia was caused by a misleading video file provided with the submission.

"The original submission of Outlast 2 sent to the Australian Classification Branch contained the final game code and a video file for reference taken from an Alpha version of the game," the studio explained in a statement provided to IGN. "This video file should not have been sent along with the game code, as its content was not representative of the final game."

"In the second submission, the same game code was submitted with a video file reflecting the final game content. The game was then approved for release with an R18+ rating."

But for all the cool new gear, spells, and thrilling tests of skill and endurance it throws at you, this final DLC adventure for Dark Souls 3 has its strongest moments tucked away in the quieter corners of its carefully crafted world.

This is the end of Dark Souls as we know it, and with it comes a host of exciting lore implications that tie back to previous games in the series. Most of those moments trigger startling revelations about this beloved world's past, but also a few thought-provoking questions about its future… even at the end of everything.

MLB The Show 17 Review in Progress

Since receiving a final copy of MLB The Show 17, I've put in about 15 hours playing games and exploring the different modes. While a full review is coming later this week, I can say that this year's version of the game is already impressing me.

The expectations are set high early, with a surprisingly good opening video; it's definitely worth watching at least once. From there, the menus have been given a fresh look. They continue to be easy to navigate and put the stuff used most often right up front.

In-game, lighting looks like it has been improved, even after the attention it has received over the past few years. Day games are especially vibrant. I continue to be impressed by the MLB The Show 17's ability to communicate the time of day and year based solely on changes in the sky and lighting.

Rain World Review

Rain World is astonishingly good-looking and absurdly cruel, a 2D action-platformer that thrills almost as often as it makes you throw down the controller in despair. Almost. Guiding a character only referred to by the developers as a "Slugcat", your travels across an obtuse, ruined world combine elements of stealth, survival, and even hints of shoot-'em-up to great effect - but the structure of the game itself works against its sometimes brilliant moment-to-moment play.

During development, the game became a consistent source of Twitter gif fodder for its almost uncannily fluid character animations, achieved through a mixture of pixel art and procedural generation. In playing, Rain World has lost none of that charm. It's the first thing you notice, in fact – Slugcat clings onto poles, shimmies through cramped ventilation and pounces across gaps not only beautifully, but reactively, taking into account the angle you began at and adjusting accordingly. Enemies follow suit, with everything from carnivorous, camouflaged plantlife to enormous, gas-spurting vultures acting and reacting with spectacular, horrible grace.

Has Been Heroes Review

So a warrior, a monk, and a rogue walk onto a battlefield and then... they die. A lot. And then they have to start all over. That's been the punchline of so many of my attempts with Has Been Heroes, and while I may have laughed a couple of times in my first few hours and enjoyed some of the good ideas put forth, my goodwill has become a has-been itself. It's bruised my admiration of the otherwise-appealing premise of this roguelike lane-brawler to the point that right now I'm content to let these heroes remain the has-beens the title says they are.

We get to hear relatively little about that. Story is hardly a strong point in Has Been Heroes, and it's chiefly limited to a handful of cutscenes with cartoony illustrations in which we hear about how the titular heroes used to be great warriors who slew dragons and giant spiders and performed other feats of derring do. Now, though, decades after their prime, the best they can hope for is escorting two princesses to school.

7 Things We Love AND Hate About Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece of open-world design and interconnected systems. And while there's a lot of love about it, that doesn't mean everyone is crazy about every little thing!

We asked several members of the IGN staff who've leaped headfirst into Hyrule what their favorite, and least favorite, moments in Breath of the Wild are after many hours spent adventuring. Here are seven things we love and hate about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is AWESOME, but that voice acting... man. It's not-so-awesome. Many of the line readings feel rushed and cramped, and almost everyone feels like they're simply 'playing a character.' They don't sound natural, or realistic. I don't want the Zelda team to give up, though. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks it's time for Link to talk. But hopefully their next attempt improves over what we got in Breath of the Wild. -- Justin Davis, Executive Editor

Nintendo: Super Mario Run Sales Didn't Meet Expectations

The sales of Nintendo's mobile game Super Mario Run failed to live up to the company's expectations.

Meanwhile, Nintendo's strategy RPG Fire Emblem Heroes has a "freemium" price model, and has proven to be a massive money-maker for the company. Despite its success, however, Nintendo has no intention of shifting entirely to a free-to-play pricing scheme for all of its future mobile games.

Assassin's Creed head of content Aymar Azaizia confirmed that a TV series is on the way during a Reddit AMA. While Azaizia refrained from providing specifics about the show, he assured fans that it won't be a rushed project. "It's like the movie guys, we will take our time to get sure we deliver something we can be proud of," he said.

Ubisoft Motion Pictures, which produced last year's live-action Assassin's Creed movie (read IGN's review) and a Rabbids TV show, will presumably handle the Assassin's Creed TV series as well. The publisher's aforementioned film and television division is also producing a Splinter Cell movie starring Tom Hardy and a film based on The Division that stars Jake Gyllenhaal.

Resident Evil 7 Was Originally Much More Like Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was originally more like Resident Evil 6 when Capcom first started developing the game.

In a YouTube video about the making of Resident Evil 7, producer Masachika Kawata revealed the studio was struggling to come up with a way to reinvent the long-running horror series.

"We were still developing the concept with the same kind of mindset" the team had for Resident Evil 6, "but it wasn't really coming together," Kawata said.

It was only when executive producer Jun Takeuchi started sharing his ideas with the rest of the team when everything began to click. Takeuchi was the one who wanted to change the camera to first-person and made it abundantly clear throughout development that the focus should be on horror.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild doesn't put you on a set path, it doesn't hold your hand, and we love it for that. Nintendo had to conduct a lot of experiments in order to make a dynamic, open world game like it.  We recently sat down with game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, technical director Takuhiro Dohta, and art director Satoru Takizawa to learn more about the process of behind creating one of the boldest entries in Nintendo's lauded Zelda series.

Different teams take a variety of approaches when making prototypes at Nintendo according to Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. "Even with the Zelda franchise, it's different," he said. "For example, Breath of the Wild started with less than 10 people." Fujibayashi told us a small team can work on early ideas to make a game for roughly a year or possibly longer, and there isn't a set time limit. The first phase is spent figuring out the game idea the team wants to make. Once the initial prototype is completed, the findings are presented to Nintendo's senior staff. If it proves the ideas will work, the team begins staffing up.

Trove Review

Trove takes Minecraft's style and focus on creative construction and fills its online, free-to-play world with dungeons, monsters, and treasure. While its highly varied environments are fun to explore, Trove lacks the depth to make it worth devoting much time to.

There's theoretically a plot to explain why Trove is divided into many tiny, monster-infested realms, but you won't hear about that beyond the opening cinematic. After that, the only motivation to stay engaged comes from a sort of tutorial quest chain that instructs you to try crafting various things and level up so you can visit more challenging areas. There are also timed quests that require rushing to beat a set of dungeons in a particular zone, ideally using a specific character class in order to get bonus rewards. There's not even the thinnest of story to make you feel like a hero who's accomplishing anything by slaying monsters and recovering treasures.

Bloodstained Coming to Nintendo Switch, Canceled on Wii U

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is officially heading to Nintendo Switch.

But there's a sacrifice in the process. The Wii U version of Bloodstained has been canceled with the change in Nintendo platforms.

The game's director, Koji Igarashi, discussed the Nintendo system shakeup on Kickstarter. "During our Kickstarter campaign, the Wii U was at the height of its popularity, but the situation has drastically changed after the release of Nintendo Switch," he said.

"This change made it difficult to receive the necessary support from the hardware maker, which has led us to drop the Wii U development and shift the development to Nintendo Switch."

100 Little Things in Zelda: Breath of the Wild That Will Blow Your Mind

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a triumphant achievement in world design and free-form, physics-based gameplay. Combining that complete player freedom with Nintendo's legendary level of polish, attention to detail, and plenty of "I can't believe they thought of that" magic moments result in a game unlike anything else we've ever played.

Below are 100 mind-blowing "tiny things" that make this vision of Hyrule such a compelling, amazing world to lose ourselves in. We didn't find all these neat details ourselves. Thanks to the communities at GameFAQS, Reddit, Kotaku, and NeoGAF for uncovering many of these.

EA Shot Down Ultima Online Pitch 3 Times

Electronic Arts needed a whole lot of convincing before Ultima creator Richard "Lord British" Garriott was given the green light to make Ultima Online.

On the latest episode of our interview show IGN Unfiltered, Garriott shared the story behind the creation of Ultima Online. He and his team wanted to make a multiplayer Ultima game—which they referred to internally as "Multima"—for quite some time, but waited until the market was ready for such a product.

When the internet started to take off, Garriott and Starr Long decided now was the time to finally pitch their "Multima" idea to EA. As part of the publisher's proposal process, Garriott said the project's lifetime sales estimate needed to justify the costs required to make the game, "but the way to determine that is with comparables," of which there were none at the time. The closest comparison they could find had 15,000 sales. So, taking into consideration the appeal of the Ultima brand, they doubled that to 30 thousand, which still wasn't nearly enough to green light the project.

7 Things to Know about Andromeda If You're a Mass Effect Newbie

If you've never played a Mass Effect game before, don't worry about it. You don't need to know a shepherd from a Shepard or have an in-depth knowledge of the original trilogy to dive into Andromeda.

The choices made at the end of Mass Effect 3 have no bearing whatsoever on this new narrative. That's because Andromeda's characters departed the Milky Way in 2185 (the same year that marked the start of Mass Effect 2) meaning it's entirely possible that the entire fleet has zero knowledge of what happened to the original protagonist, Commander Shepard, or the fate of their home.

Hence Andromeda is essentially a soft reboot, taking place 636 years after the events of the original in a totally different galaxy: Andromeda, rather than the Milky Way.

Australian Senator Attacks Censorship, Classification Board

Australian Liberal Democratic Party Senator David Leyonhjelm has criticised the Government and the Australian Classification Board in a speech delivered to the Senate yesterday.

The Senate crossbencher highlighted the recent case of Outlast II, which was refused classification late last week due to a rape sequence during one of the game's cut scenes.

"This video game takes place in a fantasy world involving all kinds of creatures both human and non-human," said Leyonhjelm. "The mere suggestion of an out-of-screen encounter between a creature and a human character was enough to get it banned altogether by the Australian Classification Board."
