Knightfall: “You’d Know What To Do” Review

This is a spoiler-free review of Knightfall: "You'd Know What To Do."

History's Knightfall delivers a fascinating story centered around the Knights Templar and their quest to find the Holy Grail in the early 14th century. Like the network's flagship series Vikings, Knightfall proves why History needs to develop more original dramas.

Knightfall goes big and bold right from the beginning with a large-scale battle set in the city of Acre. For a TV budget, the assault on the stronghold looks great, but it's the use of intricately placed cameras that make the sequence shine.

Typically, an actor that wears a helmet, like Thor, finds a reason to take it off, in order to better show the actor's face. Studios don't want to pay someone millions of dollars to hide beneath a helmet. Instead of taking the helmets off, Knightfall puts the cameras inside the helmets. It's a brilliant choice because it creates a feeling of claustrophobia that adds to the intensity of the fights.

Paladins Players Angry Over Updated Loot Box Progression

Paladins developer Hi-Rez Studios recently announced an updated progression system for its free-to-play hero shooter, and many players are angry over its apparent similarities to Star Wars Battlefront 2's Star Card system, arguing it is pay-to-win.

Previously, stat-boosting cards needed to be unlocked either through randomized loot boxes called chests or by crafting specific ones. Under the reworked system, dubbed Cards Unbound, all cards are available to all players, but have also been split into levels ranging from one to five, with higher-level cards offering better bonuses.

Opinion: Why I Felt Uncomfortable Playing The CoD WW2 Campaign

It's very hard not to be engulfed back into the world of Call of Duty every year, especially as a lover of first person shooters. I was excited to go back to World War II and experience a new harrowing chapter set against the backdrop that we first stepped foot into when we played the first few games in the series almost 15 years ago now. However, that huge period of time away from the era has allotted me a fuller knowledge of history, a chance to listen to stories about World War II from veterans still alive today as a documentarian, and even a chance to explore the history of my own grandfather, who fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Now, that's not to say these experiences have changed the way I've absorbed entertainment, especially about war. Many of the great games and films I've played and watched today are deeply rooted in war stories, historic and modern. Some of them are brutal and real in their portrayals (The Grey Zone, Saving Private Ryan) and some of them are outlandish and caricaturistic (Inglourious Basterds, Wolfenstein).  Yet, those stories have planted their stance on war in some way or another.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Review

Not so long ago I would've balked at the idea of living inside a stomach. Yet, after dozens of hours of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I've fallen in love with the kingdom of Uraya's vibrantly colored forests and cascading, strangely tinted waterfalls. It's but one of the massive living Titans that serve as floating islands or continents and home to the citizens of the ocean world of Alrest and the setting of this impressively large role-playing game. Much like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 itself, they grow more interesting the further you venture inside them.

You see most of this through the eyes of Rex, a young man initially found making his living by sifting through the junk of dead civilizations on the ocean floor. His boundless optimism somehow never gets annoying, perhaps thanks in part to the excellent English voice acting for him and virtually every character in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. (For purists, a Japanese language pack is available for download at launch.) It's not long, though, before Rex finds himself permanently bound in a symbiotic relationship with a sentient living weapon known as a Blade – one of the most powerful his world has ever known.

Sony to Shut Down Demon's Souls Online Service

Sony is shutting down the online service for Demon's Souls early next year.

According to a post the Dark Souls team made on Twitter, online servers will terminate on February 28, 2018.

After the shutdown, online cooperation and invasions will no longer be possible, and helpful (or trolling) messages from other players will no longer appear. Bloodstains, which show the ways other players have died, will no longer be available.

Players will still be able to play the game, but without the ability to summon help, players will need to rely on summoning NPCs, which can have mixed results. Beleaguered players will no longer have to worry about losing progress after being killed by an invader; however, fans of Demon's Souls PVP will have to go elsewhere to get their fix.

UK Commission Determines Loot Boxes Aren't Gambling

Loot boxes whose contents rely on chance don't meet the UK's criteria for unlawful gambling.

According to the UK Gambling Commission, since the prizes unlocked in loot boxes are usable only in the games in which they're won, and can't be cashed-out, they don't fit the bill for "licensable gambling activity."

While loot boxes, like those found in EA's Battlefront II, Blizzard's Overwatch, and more games, don't fall under the umbrella of an illegal gambling operation, the commission still expressed concern over the practice in games.

The commission said while "the line between video gaming and gambling is becoming increasingly blurred," its job is to step in when the practice meets the definition of gambling under UK law.

Bungie Changing XP Earn Rates in Destiny 2

The way experience gains scale in Destiny 2 are being changed.

In a post on its official website, Bungie acknowledge the issues with XP gain in Destiny 2, noting that it's been a discussion point among the community, as well as the studio. "After reviewing our data, we agree that the system is not performing the way we'd like it to," the developer said.

As such, Bungie is deactivating its system, which has XP scale up when playing for long or fixed duration actives like Raids or competitive Crucible matches, and scale down when playing shorter activities like Public Events.

So what does this mean for players? According to Bungie, "players will see XP earn rates change for all activities across the board, but with all values being displayed consistently in the user interface." The developer will look over XP game data gathered from the coming week to make sure the changes are up to the community and Bungie's standards.

The Pokemon Franchise Has Shipped Over 300 Million Games

The Pokemon Company has revealed to Famitsu (note: this page is in Japanese) that Pokemon games have accumulated lifetime sales of over 300 million copies.

This total incorporates 76 titles over the series' 21-year history. As well as the main series of core games, the figure also includes ancillary titles like the PokePark series or Pokemon Conquest, factoring in both physical and download sales. No mention is made of the mobile game Pokemon Go but since the information focuses on sales, it's safe to assume that Pokemon Go isn't part of the count (as it's free-to-play).

The latest entries in the series, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, released last week, selling over 1.2 million copies in Japan in just the first three days. The paired games are something of a swansong for the series; we recently reported that they would be the last games released for the 3DS family of systems, in preparation for the series' first core entries on the Nintendo Switch.

The goal of the campaign is to fix a variety of issues that concerned players are reporting, including extending FIFA 18's Weekend League period and addressing the game's microtransactions.

This isn't the first FIFA to use in-game currency for the popular Ultimate Team system, or to have microtransactions, but players are finding the drop rates unreliable and believe that spending real money is more of a necessity to be competitive.

To The Moon Sequel Gets a Release Date (and a Great Parody Trailer)

Finding Paradise, the full sequel to To The Moon (not counting spin-off A Bird Story) will be released on December 14.

To The Moon followed two scientists who are able to alter the memories of dying individuals to give them more peaceful recollections. It's primarily narrative, with limited "gamey" interactions, but our review concluded that its tale of "life, death and the importance of living with the memories of the best and worst of times" made it more than worth playing.

U.S. Legislator Wants to Limit Sale of Games With Loot Boxes in Wake of Battlefront II

Lee and his team have also been in conversations with other legislators who are examining similar options for their own states in an effort to curb what he describes as "predatory behavior" on the part of game publishers.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR Review

When VR headsets became a reality, I made a list of games I wanted to experience from that perspective. It was primarily games with fantastic worlds – games like BioShock, Half-Life 2, and, naturally The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Since then it's become clear that adapting conventional first-person games to VR wouldn't be easy, and Bethesda's Skyrim VR is an example of how many of those challenges remain unsolved. It's definitely great virtual tourism in a familiar land of dragons and magic, but this perspective doesn't do the famously clumsy combat any favors.

I never really appreciated the size and scale of Skyrim until I was standing on the Throat of the World, or seeing a dragon up close. Creatures looking big on screen because is one thing; towering over you is another. I don't have a particular hangup about spiders, but seeing the huge Frost Spiders in the early dungeons come at me sent chills down my spine. It's an absolute joy to see this world from this perspective for anyone who's spent a lot of time here.

What We Want From Star Wars: Battlefront 2's DLC

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 launched amidst equal parts controversy and acclaim. The conversation oscillated between praise for its stellar visuals and interesting story, and less-than ideal multiplayer elements and microtransactions (or lack thereof).

We know EA, Motive, and DICE plan on supporting Battlefront 2 for quite some time, so here are some ideas we had for fixes and additions that would make our dream of living in a galaxy far, far away even better.

So between the two modern Battlefront games, we've gotten a chance to step into the shoes of nearly all of the iconic heroes and villains across all eight of the core Star Wars movies. From Luke and Vader, to Yoda and Maul, to Kylo and Rey, the power-rush of controlling one of these cinematic icons has been a complete thrill. That said, there's one notable exception that EA needs to fix: where's Obi-Wan Kenobi?

VG24/7 reports the weapons in question are the DP-28 LMG and the AUG A3 assault rifle. They're now available on the game's test servers, which went live earlier this morning. However, it's not yet known whether these weapons will make it out along with version 1.0 in December, or be released separately.

Gwent Single Player Campaign Delayed to 2018

Gwent's single player campaign has been delayed to next year.

Developer CD Projekt RED announced the news today, saying it needs more time to work on the campaign's increased scope. As such, the story-driven mode, called Thronebreaker, will no longer launch this holiday season as originally planned.

"Shifting release windows is always something we approach seriously, however, we'll never hesitate to do it if we feel you'll get a better game as a result," Marcin Iwiński said, co-founder of CD Projekt RED.

Additionally, with Gwent coming out of beta in 2018, the game will be getting a lot more multiplayer updates next year more frequently. Players can expect content additions like cards, challenges, vanity items, game patches, and balance tweaks.

Monster Hunter World: 47 Changes Only Fans Will Notice

Capcom is doing a lot to get new players into the new installment of its long-running series, but it's arguably doing even more for those who've played Monster Hunter before.

If you're already a fan, here are 47 changes we spotted in our many, many hours with an early build of Monster Hunter World.

  1. 1. Armour Skills Have Changed - This is probably the most fundamental change in World. Previously, skills were awarded for wearing multiple pieces of armour, but things are a little simpler (and possibly more exciting) than before. Every armour piece now offers a single skill. However, better armour begins to offer set bonuses on top of that, meaning the best sets will offer six or more abilities for coordinating your outfit. It means a lot more mixing and matching than experienced players will be used to, but it's a great way to diversify your hunter's build.

Belgium Aims to Ban Loot Boxes in Europe

Belgium's Gaming Commission has announced that it will attempt to ban loot boxes in Europe, after constituting blind microtransactions to be gambling.

The report comes from VTM News (spotted by PC Gamer), and marks the conclusion of an ongoing investigation into the role of loot boxes in video games, and whether they can be considered a form of gambling.

The commission ruled that randomized loot crates constitute "the mixing of money and addiction" and are therefore a form of gambling no different from the risk-focused games found in a modern casino.

Pokemon Go Reveals New Rules for Mewtwo Raids

Niantic has announced new details about Pokemon Go's invitation-only EX Raids, including new criteria and rewards.

In a blog post on Pokemon Go's official site, Niantic announced that EX Raids have left the "field test" phase and have now officially launched. Invitations will still only be sent if a player has previously completed a raid at a gym where an EX Raid appears, and EX battles are most likely to appear at gyms in parks and sponsored locations (such as Sprint and Starbucks stores in the United States).

Players with a high-level gym badge at a particular gym or with a large number of raid battles completed overall are more likely to receive invitations, and EX Raid battle times will now "take into account popular Raid Battle times at that Gym," according to the post. If an EX Raid is canceled, players will receive Stardust and Premium Raid Passes as a consolation.

Super Mario Odyssey Jump-Rope Glitch Discovered

A glitch has been discovered that allows players to get absurdly high scores in Super Mario Odyssey's jump-rope challenge.

Kotaku reports that a newly discovered glitch has the leaderboard filled with scores all the way up to 99,999. This method has been dubbed the "Talkatoo glitch" as it uses the helpful bird close to the jump-rope challenge to cause the camera to freeze and suspend animations.

To get the glitch to work, players throw Cappy at the bird and talk to him just before Cappy reaches his mark, which eventually leads to Mario frozen in place as the rope moves cleanly around him.

Beyond: Can We Talk About Battlefront 2 Without Yelling?

Everyone's sick or away for Thanksgiving, so this week join Max and Brian as they run down Star Wars Battlefront 2's incredibly problematic launch, as well as trying to have an objective and measured discussion about what the game does wrong and what it does right. Meanwhile, Skyrim VR is Skyrim in VR, so if you like Skyrim, and you like VR, you'll probably enjoy it.

Battle Chef Brigade Review

Not unlike a stew, Battle Chef Brigade could only be as good as the ingredients it's cooked with. Fortunately, a hearty mixture of puzzles, platforming, and even a dash of visual novel-style storytelling help keep this melange fresh most of the way through its six lengthy courses.

Despite all the other diverse activities involved, Battle Chef Brigade's engaging match 3-style cooking puzzles are your main means of progression through the campaign. The gradual introduction of modifiers, including poison gems and increasingly complex sets of tools with different bonuses and multipliers, ensure that this aspect never becomes too easy to whisk through, and never so difficult that you'll want to toss your Switch in the oven. The challenge in Battle Chef Brigade is often dependent on how prepared you are when heading into a match, which consists of a combat phase and a puzzle phase.

Making a Monster in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

Full spoilers for Wolfenstein 2 ahead.

Wolfenstein's Frau Engel is one of the most startlingly terrifying onscreen characters in recent memory, murdering and maiming with unabashed sexual aggression and a freewheeling god complex. If the alt-right hate Wolfenstein 2 for being mean to Nazis, they surely despise Engel, a Nazi general so blatantly evil that chopping off the head of protagonist BJ Blazkowicz feels like an act of mercy.

She is a character built by many, but much of her realization can be attributed to Nina Franoszek, the charismatic and eloquent Berlin-born actress who has played her since 2011's Wolfenstein: A New Order. Franoszek's performance is a marvel; all chaotic laughs and sudden changes in mood, a Jekyll and Hyde performance where there's only Evil and More Evil.

Destiny 2: Mercury Exploration, Public Events, and Strike Preview

Mercury, the centerpiece to the Destiny 2 Curse of Osiris expansion, is going to be your newest destination. However, there may not be that much to investigate.  The scope of the area we were allowed to play felt much smaller than any of the other locations I've seen. We're told branches will open up if you begin a Public Event or quest, but those moments are supposedly only tied to specific instances. I wish I could give you a better impression of the area, but because it was so small and only has one new Public Event and one Lost Sector (which I hadn't found), I was left feeling like the space was fairly light on activities. That openness is supposed to happen after the campaign, but that's when our demo ended. With that in mind, here's what I can talk about.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Looks Set to Continue Nintendo’s Hot Streak

Some people don't like the art style of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Me? I was surprised to find myself ever so slightly annoyed when the first combat sequence popped up to remind me that I was, in fact, playing a game.

In the few minutes before that moment, I might as well have been watching an expertly made anime about a young man named Rex, who ekes out his existence as a salvager on a cloud-covered sea while living on the back on dragon-like "Titan." Barely had the opening credits slipped past, and I found I already cared about the duo. For that matter, I admired the way the anime art style gave Rex's expressions a semblance of life that 3D animation still often lacks. Those opening moments were enough to prove that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is doing right by its story-based approach after the relatively unsatisfying exploration-based Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Clicker Heroes Studio Ditching Free-To-Play for 'Ethical Reasons'

Playsaurus, the studio behind Clicker Heroes, is abandoning free-to-play for its next game citing "ethical reasons" over addictive behavior as a core reason.

When forced to choose between a paid upfront model, similar to traditional games, or a free-to-play model, as in Clicker Heroes 1, the studio will adopt the former for upcoming game Clicker Heroes 2. It will cost $29.99 and be fully refundable for a year after launch, according to a post by Fragsworth, one of the game's developers.

The reason for the change is concern that the players who spend the most money supporting the game may be victims of addictive behavior. Despite designing the game largely without the real-money shop in mind, the studio found that "some number of players spent many thousands of dollars on

Plants vs. Zombies Creator Reportedly Fired by EA

The original creator of Plants vs. Zombies, George Fan, was reportedly let go by publisher EA after objecting to the pay to win model that was subsequently introduced into the series.

Fan's story was told by Edmund McMillen,  the mastermind behind The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy and Fan's friend. Speaking on Alex Larrabee's Roundtable Podcast, McMillen said that Fan was headhunted by PopCap, where he made Plants vs. Zombies with a very small team. It was, as we all know, hugely successful for the company, but McMillen stresses that it was made with an indie mindset back in 2009.

LA Noire For Switch Review

Especially considering it originally came out in 2011, I was impressed that playing through LA Noire on the Nintendo Switch amazed me all over again. From the top-quality voice acting and the still-unmatched facial animations to the multi-layered crimes to solve, the parts that really matter work great on the Switch. The old-looking and empty open-world parts in between, not so much.

Six years later, LA Noire is still a unique game. (Read our original LA Noire review.) There are cops-and-robbers car chases and occasional gunfights, but most of it is a smartly paced, contemplative challenge that keeps you thinking. As a Los Angeles cop working in the 1940s, you'll be sent to a weird and wonderful array of crime scenes where you find clues, interact with witnesses, and draw conclusions with a limited amount of hand-holding. I never thought I'd find myself interested in the forgery of pink slips until I met the diverse cast of suspects and witnesses involved in a grand theft auto scheme, and using the right pieces of evidence against each of them presented a test of its own. A few of the 21 cases are a little repetitive, but every time I was close to feeling bored, something completely unexpected would happen and draw me back in again.

The Sims 4 Xbox One and PlayStation 4 Review

After struggling to get the cursor to select the "Save" button in the foreground menu instead of toggling between my Sim's aspirations menu in the background, I somehow finagled a way to save my progress. It was tense for a moment there: I nearly lost a few in-game days of hard work. That is just one of the many small but constantly aggravating issues I had with The Sims 4 on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Even so, I did stay up embarrassingly late playing on a few occasions because building and guiding my Sims' lives is still fun.

The Sims 4 first launched on PC in 2014 (read our Sims 4 PC review), and the transition from mouse and keyboard to a controller for the console version comes with expected challenges when condensing all the functions into so few buttons. Original developer Maxis and console port developer Blind Squirrel Games make an admirable attempt by using the View button/touchpad to toggle between two sets of controls: the menus that border the Sim world are one set, and all in-world actions are done with the other set with a cursor. It takes awhile to get used to navigating the menus, but pressing the left thumbstick for a quick control guide reference made learning them a bit easier. I would have appreciated a way to change the speed of the cursor, though.
