Forza Horizon 3 Is Still the Finest Thing on Four Wheels

Master Chief. Marcus Fenix. They were unlikely suspects on the spectrum of marketable mascots, perhaps – one is a mysterious husk hidden behind an opaque mask and the other looks like a dollar-store Dolph Lundgren that ate Bret Michaels whole and unironically wears his bandana as a kind of trophy. But Microsoft mascots they became, succeeding where Blinx the Time Sweeper, Voodoo Vince, and Clippy all failed before them.

Depending on how much stock you place in the nature of a review aggregator like Metacritic, a huge part of the reason for the enduring popularity of the likes of Master Chief and Marcus Fenix is surely tied to the quality of the games wrapped around them. The first Halo is the highest-rated Microsoft exclusive on the original Xbox (in fact, it's the highest-rated game on the console, full stop). And Halo 2? Number three on the all-time list.

Paladins Dev Throws Shade at New Overwatch Character

Hi Rez Studios' President Stew Chisam has hit back at accusations that Paladins: Champions of the Realm, Hi-Rez's online team-based game, copied Overwatch, Blizzard's online team-based game, with some playful shade.

On Twitter, Chisam drew comparisons between the look and abilities of Overwatch's latest hero Brigitte Lindholm, and those of Paladins' Ash.

"Quick poll," Chisam tweeted. "If I happened to notice and point out any similarities between these two characters, would that make me the Pot calling the Kettle black, or the Kettle calling the Pot black? This will keep me up tonight unless I get a clear answer."

Battlefield 1: Apocalypse DLC Review

Battlefield 1: Apocalypse should be thought of mostly as a map pack, with two especially strong and great-looking ground battles leading the charge back into the fray. The pair of simple air battles, on the other hand, aren't much more than a distraction from the real war.

Apocalypse's River Somme, Caporetto, and Passchendaele are standard Battlefield maps meant to be played in modes like Conquest. They all bring the brutality the same way: they're relatively open and less directed, with limited cover options. That's a contrast to Battlefield 1's previous maps, which have emphasized high cover and defined flanking routes. It's easy to make a beeline for the next objective, especially on Passchendaele, though this still leaves you vulnerable to sniper fire.

Nintendo Pulls Switch Game User Reviews

Last week, Nintendo added an option for players to review Nintendo Switch games directly on their official Nintendo pages. Unfortunately, that option is now gone.

As Polygon reports, the feature was abruptly removed today, just five days after it launched. Switch games still have customer review tabs on Nintendo's site, but an explanatory blurb now stands in their place. Here's the full version explaining what happened:

"Customer reviews have been taken offline as we evaluate this feature and its functionality. We currently have no estimated date on when an update will be provided. We appreciate the positive response and thank the reviewers who provided such thoughtful commentary on the games."

Into The Breach Review

A lot of tactical depth can happen on a simple eight-by-eight grid. Into The Breach, the follow-up to the legendary FTL: Faster Than Light from Subset Games, creates a fantastic variety of turn-based tactical battles between your team of three mechs and giant, city-destroying kaiju monsters. On a regular basis, Into The Breach makes me scratch my head and wonder how I'm going to get out of this mess alive. And on a few of those occasions, it's a thrill when I actually do.

Aside from the subtly detailed animations, the colorful and easily readable pixel-art graphics style does risk Into The Breach being mistaken for a typical simplistic mobile game - though, to be honest, I very much hope it's eventually ported to phones so I can play it everywhere I go. On the most surface of levels, it's about moving your units into position to shoot, punch, bombard, push, or otherwise affect the waves of monsters that erupt from the ground, and uses an XCOM-like one move, one attack per turn system that's become common since 2012. But the way its countless smart rules interact with each other makes learning the nuances of its battle system one of the most rewarding tactical experiences I've played in years.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance Would Make a Great TV Series

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is currently available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Be sure to check out our full review right here.

I'm 36 hours into my first playthrough of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and while I was trotting along the lush Bohemian countryside with my trusty steed (Pebbles), it occurred to me that the game's story would be perfect for television. Sword and shield epics like Vikings, Game of Thrones, and Knightfall are very popular nowadays, so why not adapt developer Warhorse Studios' new RPG?

Creating any new series is a difficult undertaking, but before the studio executives crunch the numbers, showrunners scout locations to film, sets are built and actors are cast, having a great story is paramount. KCD has one of those classic rags to riches tales with its lead character, Henry. He's just a regular guy -- the son of a blacksmith who enjoys throwing poop at people's houses, drinking at the local pub, flirting with the ladies, and occasionally trying his hand at swordplay even though he's not very good when the game begins. After an attack on his village results in the death of his parents, Henry sets off on an epic quest for revenge where he gets involved in a large-scale conflict involving lords, kings, and popes.

Metal Gear Survive Dev Appears to Call Out Konami in Hidden Message

Right after you're prompted to enter your name at the beginning of Survive's campaign, you'll see it added to a clipboard among a group of other military code-names. Eagle eyed users on both Reddit and Twitter have noticed that if you take the first letter of each of the last names on that page, it spells out "KJP Forever", which could be interpreted as "Kojima Productions Forever" (with a break between the P and the F for the player's custom name). Underneath that, two of the names with particularly negative connotations -"Bastard Yota" and "Cunning Yuji"- share the same first names as Survive's director Yota Tsutsumizaki and producer Yuji Korekado. Both are listed as "AWOL."

At the start of 2015 I was in the middle of my third university degree after dropping out of the previous two, had just come out of my most serious relationship to date and had moved into a share house to live independently for the first time.

It was a period in my life in which I was going through significant change and learning; dealing with the slow and often confusing transition from childhood, school and lack of responsibility, to well, adulthood. At the same time, and on the other side of the planet, a relatively unknown French studio called Dontnod was gearing up to release the first episode of its next big project, an episodic game that would be a beacon for their success and own growth as a studio.

Payday 2 Waiting for Nintendo Permission to Use Voice Chat on Switch

Publisher Starbreeze Studios has said it's waiting on Nintendo to be able to use the company's companion VOIP app for Payday 2.

Kotaku reports Payday 2, which relies heavily on communication due to its cooperative nature, will eventually use the Nintendo Switch Online App to facilitate voice chat-in game, pending Nintendo's permission.

"We are waiting to be able to participate in Nintendo's VOIP app solution," Starbreeze Studios told Kotaku "As soon as we are given the go-ahead, this is definitely on our list to look into to update."

Nintendo consoles have famously not included any means of voice chat between players while in-game. The Switch is no different on its own but does work with the Nintendo Switch Online App, which came out last July, to use voice chat for compatible games.

Papers, Please Short Film Out Now, Free to Watch

An excellent 10 minute film based on Lucas Pope's powerful 2013 game Papers, Please is out now.

The film, which is free to watch on YouTube and Steam, does a wonderful job at capturing the bleak tone of Lucas Pope's frantic puzzler and the moral quandaries suffered by his border crossing immigration officer in the made-up state of Arstotzka.

In our review, we called Papers, Please "a simulation of that moment that a cog in the machine's heart finally stops beating, or a kind of hidden object game where what you're mostly looking for is a glimmer of hope."

Rust Review - A Unique Combination of Survival

Rust is a griefer's paradise. There's nothing quite like finding a guy sleeping in a forest and looting him before he wakes up, or camping outside another player's fort and killing her when she opens the door. For those who enjoy deadly games of cat and mouse, Rust might just be the best survival game out there. But anybody more interested in building and exploration, or isn't able to devote themselves to one game, may have a rough time.

Even though other games are better at specific elements like crafting, combat, survival, and exploration, I've never played a survival game that combines them quite like Rust. The way it blends survival and competitive genres is fun, especially if you enjoy the goofier bits, like firing rocket launchers at a naked man running from a pig, or being stabbed to death by a person blasting Russian music over their microphone and brandishing a spear. It's weirder and less polished than the competition, but that's part of the fun.

Whether its town folk needing Bayak's help to complete random tasks, or angry hippos trying to murder you, this new area is packed full of the standard Assassin's Creed: Origins features we've come to know and love.

Then the ground starts getting really sparkly and from nowhere, a shadow of a dead pharaoh springs to life in the town's square and makes quick work of the local militia. Payday 2 for Switch Review: Communications Breakdown

When we first reviewed Payday 2 in 2013, we gave it an 8.0, for great. Here's what we said about it then:

"Played as intended with a group of friends, PayDay 2 is much like one of its heists: things can get a little sloppy, but the potential payoff is big. Parts of its presentation are lacking, and the state of its single-player is criminal, but overall, it's a deep, addictive co-op shooter that tickled my inner burglar." Read the original Payday 2 review.

The Switch version has all of that, plus most – but not all – of the content updates the PC and console versions have gotten since launch, and the addition of an exclusive new character and HD rumble give it a slight edge. But as with many ports, performance isn't its strong suit, and the lack of built-in voice chat is a big problem for a game that requires such tight cooperation for success.

Ubisoft Censors Statues in AC Origins' Discovery Mode

The newly enabled discovery mode in Assassin's Creed Origins may be one of the most historically accurate ways to explore ancient Egypt, but at least one detail has been altered to match modern sensibilities.

Neil Druckmann on Inspiration for The Last of Us 2

During a panel today at DICE Summit 2018, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann discussed one of the inspirations for The Last of Us, Part II and shared some interesting information about the development of Uncharted 4.

"There's a show on Netflix called The End of the F***ing World, which is so well written and acted and quirky, has been totally inspiring for some of the stuff we're doing in

—more on the dialog stuff." He also noted how the studio drew a lot of inspiration from Children of Men when making the first game, as they sought to tell an intimate story in-genre that isn't about some massive alien invasion.

Druckmann also touched on how his idea for The Last of Us originated when creating a zombie game pitch for George Romero while he was in grad school, something he's discussed in the past. The idea "took ICO and combined it with characters from Sin City," and put players in the shoes of a cop with a heart condition who is protecting a girl. When he has heart trouble, player control would shift to the girl, who would then need to protect the cop. While Romeo passed on the pitch, the idea stuck with Druckmann and inspired the story of The Last of Us.

While the team ultimately settled on a third-person perspective with a tight camera, Druckmann said they've kicked around the idea of making a Naughty Dog first-person game and even joked about how they might make Half-Life 3.

Nintendo Switch Getting Outdated Version of Payday 2

Payday 2 publisher Starbreeze has confirmed the version coming to Switch is not the latest iteration of the game.

Polygon reports the revelation comes after fan outrage on Reddit after an early recipient reportedly streamed the game before release later this month.

Features such as the ability to speed up the end of heists screens and flashbangs were not present during the stream, keying fans into the apparently older software.

Starbreeze has since confirmed with Polygon that the version releasing on Switch is not the most recent 147 update.

"Payday 2 is releasing on Switch with content up to and including the 'Most Wanted' update, which is equivalent to the content released through mid-2017 on PC. PS4 and Xbox One received one additional update after that, the 'Master Plan' update, which released near the end of 2017," Starbreeze told Polygon. "So Switch is one update behind other consoles, which are slightly behind PC."

Fortnite Update Will Make Building Faster and Easier

Fortnite's upcoming v.3.0.0 update will offer some new changes and options to make building both faster and easier.

In an official blog post, Epic Games detailed four key ways it would be speeding things up, the first of which is a toggleable "Turbo Building" option that allows you to hold down your primary fire to continuously place building pieces.

Another new toggleable option called "Auto Change Materials" will do exactly what it sounds like, automatically switching to another building material when the one you are using runs out.

How Ubisoft Is Innovating by Exploring Beyond Gaming

Though Ubisoft's worldwide studios work themselves to craft new technology and push the possibilities of their games, a relatively new facet of the company is looking beyond gaming to innovate within the industry.

Ubisoft's Strategic Innovation Lab is a collective within Ubisoft studying and analyzing trends in how the world interacts with technology and its rapid changes to then find ways of applying them to Ubisoft as a whole. Lidwine Sauer, Director of Insights and Trends for the lab, spoke with IGN ahead of her DICE 2018 speech to explain the lab's focuses going forward.

Having already spoken at DICE Europe, Sauer has explored the lab's work in fields like artificial intelligence and implementations of it in Ubisoft products. Sauer cited last year's Star Trek: Bridge Crew as an example of AI's voice command capabilities, as well as the recent introduction of Sam, Ubisoft's personal gaming assistant interface introduced into beta in the Ubisoft Club app.
