Before I put down the controller to leave my Dragon Quest Builders demo, I made my character look to the ground and furiously dig down. About four blocks deep, I hit rock that wouldn’t take damage from my basic weapon. The Square Enix representative asked, “Do you play Minecraft?”
Dragon Quest Builders understands the genre it’s leaping into; you hit dirt with a weapon and receive a cute block in return, eliminate enemies for resources to craft items, and eat food to keep your character going. Dragon Quest Builders doesn’t entirely feel like a Minecraft clone with a cute Dragon Quest skin due to a few elements, such as the hints at a greater plot in the trailer and NPCs ability to populate the town you create. However, until more details about the game’s objectives are announced, it still feels like this adventure has already been crafted.
