8 Secrets of Mario and Donkey Kong's Origins Revealed

Mario and Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto divulged some surprising secrets about the origins of Nintendo's first hit video game, Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong, released in 1981, introduced not only the titular ape, but also the unlikely mustachioed hero that became known as Mario. Our colleagues at IGN Japan took a look at the interview (check out the original Japanese text here) and translated out some of the choicest quotes from Shigeru Miyamoto on creating Mario and the arcade mega hit that put Nintendo on video screens worldwide.

Donkey Kong's captive (first named "Lady", then "Pauline") originally cried "Help! Help!" and said "Nice!" in English when Mario made a good jump, but limitations forced Miyamoto to replace the voices with sound effects. "We were worried about whether the pronunciation was OK, so we invited an English teacher to listen, and they told us that it sounded like Lady was actually crying 'Kelp! Kelp!' We had no choice but to abandon the idea of using voices."
