Battlefield revolutionized the first-person shooter when it made its 2002 debut with Battlefield 1942. It was among the first shooters to provide the opportunity for large-scale warfare, and encourage team-play dynamics above individual survival. From its roots in World War II, the Vietnam War, and modern-day military, to its exploration of future warfare, the "war on crime," and even a brief stint in casual games, Battlefield has come a very long way.
With a new Battlefield on the way, this one making a return to the early 20th century with World War I, we thought we'd take a look back on most of the major Battlefield games from 2002 to now. Below is the visual history of Battlefield.
