Coming up with the design for Cuphead's main character required a lot of trial and error at Studio MDHR, and the game's creators have come forward to discuss how the iconic cup-for-a-head look came to fruition.
"Cuphead and Mugman came from the tail end of the concept phase, where we were like, 'none of these that we have work,'" art director Chad Moldenhauer explained on the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered.
So, in an effort to find some fresh inspiration, Chad started paying specific attention to the backgrounds of the cartoons he was watching, rather than the characters. As an example, he mentioned a palm tree he spotted in the background of a cartoon, which then led him to try designing a palm-tree-headed character.
