This morning graced us with the gameplay debut of Bethesda's upcoming open world post-apocalyptic shooter Rage 2, but the more interesting thing about the game is what's happening in the real world. The trailer has a much more cartoonish bent to it than the original game, and it can't help but be compared in part to Gearbox's upcoming cartoonish open world post-apocalyptic shooter Borderlands 3.
Both of the two games are caught in a war of validation that will stick with them up to release. It's not uncommon for two similar-looking games to exist in one another's orbit (Rise of the Tomb Raider and Uncharted 4 is a solid recent example), but it's even more heightened in this instance. Last week, both games were leaked thanks to a retail posting from Wal-Mart Canada, offering many the hope that they would be revealed within the next month. Rage 2 is the sequel to a game nearly a decade old, and one that didn't really make much of a splash at that, save for its ending just being a dud. The original Rage sold well, but the idea of a sequel just never really seemed to be on the docket, despite Bethesda's vague acknowledgment that it could happen someday.
