Ubisoft Details Compensation for Last Week's For Honor Outage

Following last week's server outage, Ubisoft has detailed what they'll be doing to make it up to players.

With an undisclosed number of players unable to access For Honor's online mode between February 13 to February 26, Ubisoft is offering Champion Status to all to make up for the hiccup. The peace offering will be available from March 3 to March 5 on all platforms.

To claim Champion Status, all you need to do is log in on the above-mentioned dates. For those unfamiliar with what Champion Status is, Ubisoft explains it as so:

Someone's Made Overwatch... for VR Game, Job Simulator

Ever wondered what would happen if Overwatch was fused with Job Simulator?

Following a weekend hack project, Job Simulator developer Owlchemy Labs has created a makeshift world of Overwatch within the 9-5 simulator. The mod, which sadly will not be released for public consumption, features Reaper's gun – represented by two staplers – Mei's icewall (a spray can), and Widowmaker's sniper rifle (bottle of grape juice with a mug taped on) all being used to fend off an approaching Pharah, Reinhardt and mini-McCree.

If you're a fan of Overwatch, the video below is a must-watch.

Torment: Tides of Numenera Review

"Reading," the Nigerian poet Ben Okri said once, "is an act of civilization." Torment: Tides of Numenera embraces this idea, pairing a whole fantasy novel's worth of quality quest text with a design foundation that champions chatting with enemies rather than running them through with swords. It's a strange concept in the context of most roleplaying games, and Torment: Tides of Numenera delivers a satisfyingly strange world to complement it. It's too bad that the combat falls short when it's actually necessary, but the surrounding world usually presents enough memorable wonders to make up for it.

As a spiritual successor to 1999's Planescape: Torment, one of the finest (and strangest) RPGs ever made, Torment: Tides of Numenera embraces its predecessor's isometric design with its use of the capable Pillars of Eternity engine. More importantly, it preserves Planescape: Torment's weird philosophical tone and aesthetic, filling the screen with everything from quasi-medieval markets to entire cities crafted out of meat.

Some Switch Games Are Touchscreen-Only

Not all Nintendo Switch games will take advantage of the console's ability to play on the big screen. Some will only work when the Switch is in its handheld mode.

"As we see more games come up, we will see games that leverage the touchscreen more," Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi told us in an interview.

This jibes with Kotaku's report that Japanese Switch launch game Voez is mobile-only and isn't designed to be played when the console is docked.

A FAQ accompanying the game, already out on mobile devices, spells out the flat-out confirms mobile-only nature, saying "This software can not play in TV mode."

Hearthstone’s Journey to Un’Goro Announced

Called Journey to Un'Goro, the new set will add 135 new cards to the game and be available sometime in April.

Only a handful of cards have been revealed so far, but we've already seen two big new mechanics. Quest cards reward players for building their decks a particular way, with a set of requirements that need to be filled in order to be rewarded with "a card of monstrous power!"

How Is GameStop's Publishing Division Doing?

GameStop entered the world of game publishing in 2016 with its new division GameTrust, and the company's first title, Song of the Deep, was a success, according to one of GameTrust's executives.

"The game broke all levels that we had put in front of it for both retail and digital," Mark Stanley, vice president of internal development and diversification at GameStop, said while speaking to IGN at DICE 2017. "So, thankfully, Song of the Deep is still doing well. We're hoping to work again with Insomniac soon with another project."

Song of the Deep was developed by Insomniac Games that released in 2016 both digitally and in physical form exclusively at GameStop. In addition to publishing the game itself, GameTrust took a wider approach, publishing a tie-in book and other collectibles alongside Song of the Deep. Stanley acknowledged that people stepping into a GameStop may not initially know what these collectibles relate to, but their existence alongside the game allows those who do buy it to deepen their connection to this new franchise.

Night in the Woods Review

Night in the Woods is all about the little things. Late-night diner adventures with friends; spontaneous rooftop stargazing; chatting about ghosts with the crust punks who hang out on the outskirts of town. Moments like these come and go faster than you can swing a bat at a batch of discarded light bulbs out behind the local snack mart, but thanks to earnest, heartfelt writing and a good helping of dry humor, they also lingered in my mind long after they'd passed.

While some pacing issues hamper the excitement of this side-scrolling, story-driven adventure's latter half, I never stopped feeling invested in the personal stories of its adorable anthropomorphic animal cast, whose individual struggles and flaws make them surprisingly human and often painfully relatable.

The Best GPUs

When we're old and sitting in our rocking chairs on the porch we'll look back fondly on the year 2016, wipe a tear from our eye, and regale our grandkids about the move to 14nm and 16nm FinFET GPUs. "Your granddad had 100fps at 1440p," we'll tell our grandkids as they ignore us while ensconced in their 32k VR simulations. They won't understand, of course, how amazing the year 2016 was in terms of GPU advancements, but it can't be understated. Not only did we finally move from 28nm planar transistors all the way down to 14/16nm 3D FinFET, but the accompanying performance boost from one generation to the next was one of the largest ever recorded in modern times. Instead of the typical 10 to 20 percent boosts we experience going from one generation of silicon to the next, we saw a 60 to 80 percent boost. Frame rates skyrocketed, 4k gaming became viable with a single GPU, and laptops were able to sport desktop-class graphics for the first time due to improvements in efficiency as well. It was (and still is) a great time to be alive, indeed.

Everything You Need to Know About The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

At this point, it's hard to remember a time when The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was not in the works. This game has been churning in the background since before the Wii U came out, meaning its development spanned an entire Nintendo console generation.

Not only will Breath of the Wild be Nintendo's final game for Wii U, but it's also positioned as the standout launch title for the Nintendo Switch. With both versions set to launch on March 3, let's look at the winding road Breath of the Wild traveled to get here.

Believe it or not, Nintendo first dropped hints about about an HD Zelda game way back at E3 2011 — before Skyward Sword even came out. The hint was a CGI demo that showed Link squaring off against the giant spider Gohma. The demo bears little resemblance to the Breath of the Wild we know today, but it proved Nintendo had plans to bring the franchise into the modern HD world.

How Dirt 4 Is Rewriting the Rally Rulebook

There's a real sense of history at Codemasters' Southam studio – a sprawling campus that's commandeered a slab of soggy English countryside a short cab ride out of Leamington Spa, about an hour or so north-west of London. The lobby itself is a modest museum of the publisher's most highly-regarded games. Framed and familiar box art adorns the walls on all sides. I haven't just played all these games; I still own most of them.  Brian Lara Cricket. The TOCA series and the Race Driver series that followed. Micro Machines. The legendary Colin McRae games. Hell, even Prisoner of War is up there. It's a reminder not of just how much Codemasters' general output resonates with me, but for how many decades it's done so.

All Future Halo Shooters Will Have Split-Screen Support

Today at DICE 2017, 343 Industries head Bonnie Ross confirmed that all future first-person shooter Halo games will have split-screen multiplayer.

During her talk, titled "Stewards of a Sci-Fi Universe," Ross discussed some of the lessons that 343 has learned over the past few years, including the rough multiplayer launch of The Master Chief Collection, as well as the lack of split-screen multiplayer in Halo 5: Guardians, noting it's "incredibly painful for the community" and for those at the studio.

As such, Ross confirmed that "for any FPS going out forward, we will always have split-screen."

The lack of split-screen support in any of Halo 5's modes received a lot of backlash from the community. At the time, 343 said it was a "tough" choice that was made so the studio wouldn't have to compromise on Halo 5's "massive scale environments, improved AI behavior, increased visual and gameplay fidelity."

How Street Fighter II Inspired Mortal Kombat's Fatalities

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has shed light on where the original idea for Fatalities came from, citing the Street Fighter franchise as a key source of inspiration.

On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, Boon revealed that the dizzy mechanic introduced in Street Fighter II (which renders a player unable to move for a brief period of time mid-battle after getting it too many times consecutively) ultimately led to the creation of Fatalities in Mortal Kombat.

LEGO City Undercover Current-Gen Release Date Revealed

LEGO City Undercover is coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 4.

The open-world LEGO game first launched for Wii U back in 2013. The modern version of the game features a co-op mode not found in the original.

WB Games announced LEGO City Undercover for PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch on its Twitter page back in November, but didn't give a firm release date, saying the game was coming out in Spring 2017.

If you missed it on Wii U, and statistically speaking you probably did, the game blends the humor and collecting of LEGO games with a Grand Theft Auto-style open world format. There are "more than 20 unique districts to investigate," and besides the obvious chasing and apprehending criminals, there are "mischievous aliens to capture," among other quirky, LEGO-game activities.

Mass Effect: Andromeda Hands-On: 3 Hours of Spoiler-Free Impressions

From the very beginning, Mass Effect: Andromeda presents a strong, dedicated focus on customization, creatively expanding on some of the series' staple RPG elements. I played three early hours of the game last week, and here's everything I learned about the upcoming sci-fi RPG, excluding extensive character and narrative-based information, because we don't want to spoil anything.

Just like Shepard, pre-made versions of Andromeda's twin protagonists, Sara and Scott Ryder, exist, but the character customization menu also lends itself to creating more "hideous and outrageous" protagonists (to use BioWare's own words) than the existing Mass Effect trilogy did. Since the Ryders aren't military, there's an array of unconventional and bizarre hairstyles available that likely never would've suited the likes of Shepard, and I think we're going to have a whole lot of fun with it.

Due to the setting of Deadfire (which is a huge archipelago) it just didn't make sense to him or the team to try and root players on a single land mass, when the game takes place across a bunch of different land masses separated by water.

Halo Wars 2 Review

It is said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. In that sense, Halo Wars 2 is the de facto king of real-time strategy games on consoles, where the venerable genre is underrepresented because of the challenges of managing a lot of units at once on a gamepad. Like its predecessor, Halo Wars 2 does a reasonably good job of overcoming many – not all – of those challenges, but compared to the best RTS games on PC, where it also exists, its campaign missions are flat and unambitious, and its distinctive Blitz multiplayer mode sacrifices the stability of a level playing field in the name of fast and unpredictable action.

I admire Microsoft's effort to expand its prized Halo series into something that spans beyond an endless procession of first-person shooters, and with Halo Wars 2 (like Halo Wars before it) we get to experience this sci-fi universe from a perspective that emphasizes the scope of its battles. Seeing instantly recognizable vehicles like Warthogs and Banshees on the field adds an inherited personality to what is otherwise a fairly standard set of units. While there are substantial differences in tactics thanks to the unique Banished (a rebel faction of the Covenant) units like suicide grunts and airborne Blisterback artillery, the greatest distinction between them and the UNSC Marines comes from support powers like bombardments and buffs cast from above.

Berserk and the Band of the Hawk Review

If there was ever an anime or manga that was ripe for a Dynasty Warriors game treatment, it's Berserk. The legendary 100-Man-Slayer's gruesome story translates well to an action game about hack-and-slash murder sprees, and wielding his giant hunk of iron in Berserk and the Band of the Hawk felt powerful and satisfying… until it got a little too simple and repetitive.

After I got over Band of the Hawk's inexplicable lack of co-op (nearly every other Warriors-style game includes it), I jumped into the lonely single-player action gameplay. Like the rest of Dynasty Warriors' many spinoffs, it's easy to grasp and superficially satisfying, especially when performing specials in the form of Death Blows to eradicate entire swarms of enemies in explosive displays of blood and guts.

3 Ways Project CARS 2 Could Trump Gran Turismo Sport

Project CARS 2 and Gran Turismo Sport are two of 2017's biggest racing games, and they're both set to duke it out on track for the hearts and minds of driving die-hards at some stage this year.

It's no secret the Slightly Mad Studios team are gunning for the big, mainstream first-party racing series like Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport – it was part of their audacious original pitch to unwilling publishers in the first place – but the developer is pushing harder than ever for Project CARS 2.

With a long history of incredible commercial success behind it the Gran Turismo series remains very much the big wheel down at the cracker factory (in terms of racing games only the Need for Speed and Mario Kart series have shifted more copies) but it's clear now Gran Turismo Sport will actually have less content and fewer features than Project CARS 2.

The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ will no longer release on March 3. Developer Nicalis announced the delay via Tumblr, explaining the title has indeed been pushed back but has not given a specific reason as to why. However, Afterbirth+ is still slated to come out sometime in March.

Along with the delay, Nicalis also revealed limited edition sticker sheets, which will come with the much loved Isaac face sticker, reversible alternate cover, and a 20-page instruction booklet will be included with every launch copy of the game. The booklet features some never-before-seen art design.

Doomfist Might Not Be the Next Overwatch Hero After All

Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan appears to have poured cold water on the widely-held belief that the (possibly Terry Crews-voiced) Doomfist will be the next character released for the shooter.

In an Overwatch forum thread otherwise about new emotes for existing characters, Kaplan reconfirmed that "we have multiple new heroes being worked on right now", before stating that "

is not who you think it is."

Following subtle hints and a campaign by Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Crews to voice the character, it's been the general assumption that Doomfist would be number 24 - Kaplan appears to be telling us that's not the case.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Review

There's something about being dropped into a brand new game world and finding it to be dense with deeply considered lore, terrifyingly aggressive creatures, and tantalizing questions that leaves an indelible mark on the memory. Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of those games, and it carves out a unique identity within the popular action-roleplaying genre. Coupled with wonderfully flexible combat and a story that touches on unexpectedly profound themes, I found it hard to tear myself away from Horizon even after I'd finished its main campaign some 40 odd hours later.

A sense of urgency is established from the get-go, as Horizon's premise is a big mystery that begs to be solved. The questions raised by protagonist Aloy and the primitive, feral machine-infested open world she inhabits kept me guessing throughout: what's at the centre of it all? Although Horizon suffers from occasionally corny dialogue that belies its smarts, the broader ideas it prods at - the nature of creation, for example - are remarkably ambitious.

For Honor Review

For Honor's combat is the kind of brutal melee I always wanted, but never thought I'd actually get to play. Its third-person action-game exterior hides a strategically complex fighting game, mixing team-based action with less interesting solo modes, all built on the most flexible and technically complete melee fighting system I've ever experienced.

For Honor lives and dies on its fighting system, dubbed "The Art of Battle" by Ubisoft, and it's the reason For Honor is more like a traditional fighting game in the vein of Street Fighter or Soul Calibur than the hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors it appears to be at first glance. Locking onto an opponent puts you into "duel mode," for lack of a better term, where you can change your guard to block left, right, or top. You can block incoming attacks from the direction you're guarding, and you have to read which direction your opponent is guarding and attack from one of the two directions from which they're vulnerable to successfully hit.

How Skyward Sword Feedback Impacted Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma recently discussed how feedback influenced Breath of the Wild, revealing how a fan's response to Skyward Sword impacted the game's development.

"So there was something that the fans said before starting development that changed what I thought," Aonuma told Game Informer during an interview in which he was joined by Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

"There was a fan that said he really, really loved Zelda," he continued. "But while playing Skyward Sword, he missed experiencing this huge world where he could just ride Epona around," something Aonuma said the fan really enjoyed in Ocarina of Time. "And somewhere within myself, I felt the same way," he added, noting that "for Breath of the Wild, it's something that I definitely thought about."
