2013 vs 2020: Which Final Console Year Will Be Better?

2013 feels like forever ago, an era slowly fading away that included many iconic single-player narrative stories, a time before ongoing shared-world experiences existed, before the rise of loot boxes and microtransactions; an era where not every game was an open-world experience with RPG elements, before every game with backtracking was referred to as a "Metroidvania." The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era was a  simpler time, and yet, here we are again on the cusp of the next generation of consoles, where cloud-based gaming is the hot new trend, and everyone has their own game streaming service. With that being said, 2020 might be the biggest year we've had in video games since 2007 (which saw the release of BioShock, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Super Mario Galaxy, and The Orange Box - which included Portal.)

Ranking Every Resident Evil Spinoff

Capcom recently announced Project Resistance, a team-based Resident Evil spin-off game that pits a group of survivors against the zombies and big bads the franchise is famous for. Whilst this new game looks all kinds of fun, it's true that past Resident Evil spin-offs have been fairly hit and miss in terms of quality.

More experimental than games in the core series, the spin-off games have a history stretching back to the turn of the century and have dabbled in a surprising number of different genres. Whether any of them are worth revisiting before Project Resistance hits beta testing in October is, of course, up to you - but to help you decide we've put together a list of every console Resident Evil spin-off released so far, and how it fared on our review scale.

New Brain Age Announced For Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has announced that a new Brain Age game is to be released for Nintendo Switch, once again featuring the digital face of Dr. Kawashima.

Revealed in a trailer on Nintendo's YouTube channel, the Japanese language video shows off a new version of Brain Age with activities designed to use the Switch's specific hardware. For example, the rock, paper, scissors minigame that has been seen in previous Dr. Kawashima games now uses the IR sensor in the joy-con to detect your actual hand, so you can make the shapes yourself.

The same technology is used for a mathematics game, which requires you to show the number of fingers required to solve simple sums.

The trailer also shows multiplayer modes played with one joy-con each, as well as more traditional single-player games that use a stylus, much like the original Nintendo DS games in the series. The stylus will be available on brain Age's launch day in Japan.

The Best Games of 2019 So Far – September Update

With the end-of-year rush on the horizon, we're pausing to look back at the best games of 2019 so far. We've already covered the best games on each system — PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC — but this list encompasses all platforms to provide a more complete look at this year's top reviewed games. Below you'll find all 40 games released in 2019 that received a review score of 8.5 or higher from IGN. Note that, despite their qualifying scores, expansions (e.g. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers) and ports (e.g. Cuphead and Unravel 2 on Switch) aren't included. Remakes (e.g. Resident Evil 2 and Link's Awakening) are, however, since they are effectively new games rather than remasters.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Preview: A Stunningly Detailed Aviation Simulation

I don't think I've ever been as impressed by any technology as much as I was by Microsoft's upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator (which is coming to Xbox One for the first time, in addition to its usual PC release). It's astonishing in its commitment to realism, and the implementation is clever, extraordinarily technical, and completely blew me away.

I was lucky enough to experience the sim at the Worldwide Flight Simulator Press Event, held at the offices of Rainier Air at the Renton Municipal Airport just outside Seattle. The city of Renton is an aviation city, home of the Boeing manufacturing plant responsible for the 737 airliner. Sitting on the edge of Lake Washington, the woodlands give way to massive hangars and aircraft in various states of completion. The airfield where I got to learn about and play Flight Simulator is the first strip of tarmac the 737's taste before they take to the sky to be delivered to customers around the globe.

How Minecraft Earth Plans to Reinvent the World Around You

Minecraft Earth is a game of huge ambition. Its creators want nothing less than to bring the creativity and fun of the classic Minecraft experience into the real world, at full scale. The idea is that not only will people get the chance to interact with virtual Minecraft scenarios overlaid on actual locations, but that eventually the game will become a showcase for people's imaginations; a way to transform hum drum reality into something magical.

Getting there, however, is going to take time and overcoming a whole host of obstacles. Minecraft Earth has been in development for a year and a half at this point, but is still at a relatively formative stage – it boasts some impressive tech, but also has its share of bugs and teething problems. And to truly improve the game, Minecraft Earth needs to go large. It needs an army of people helping to add detail to its OpenStreetMap-based depiction of the world, and it needs to inventory and precisely locate an immense number of real world objects to better anchor virtual play spaces. (More on that in a bit.)

18 Things We Just Learnt About Minecraft and Minecraft Earth

After a couple of months in closed beta, Minecraft Earth is now rolling out in Early Access on Android and iOS, which means millions more people can have a taste of building and adventuring in augmented reality. It's an important step for the game, given its overworld map is crowdsourced (via OpenStreetMap) as is its ability to accurately place digital play spaces in actual locations (via Azure Spatial Anchors).

Early Access is also exciting because it's the public debut of Adventures – small slices of Minecraft played solo or with friends in real-world locations. I was actually able to play a couple of these ahead of time and you can read my impressions here. During the same event I also got the chance to chat with Minecraft's creative director Saxs Persson, who really laid out his vision for not just Minecraft Earth, but for Minecraft too. Here are 18 things you may not know, from Saxs himself…

Minecraft's Nether Update Adds New Biomes, Piglin Beasts and Mobs

Revealed during MINECON Live, the Nether Update will add the new Target block that acts as a projectile hit-detector and the Soulsand Valley and Netherwart Forest biomes.

Also introduced were the Piglin Beasts and Piglin mobs that bring a brand new civilization to the Minecraft universe. The name Piglin may be a temporary one, however, as fans can now vote on a new name.

In addition to the Nether Update, it was also revealed that Bees, Beehives, and the Honey Block will arrive in both Bedrock and Java versions of Minecraft before the holidays.

Minecraft Earth Early Access Launching in October

Minecraft Earth, the free-to-play augmented reality mobile game that is more-or-less Minecraft + Pokemon GO, is set to launch in Early Access this October, with a plan to be worldwide by the end of the year.

Revealed during MINECON Live, Minecraft Earth has been in closed beta in five cities over the summer, and the Early Access version will add such features as mob variants, crafting and smelting, and social multiplayer experiences called Adventures.

Adventures are smaller versions of Minecraft worlds that can be played in real life through AR technology. "For example, your sidewalk becomes a mine and there could be diamonds under your feet, or your local park may have Minecraft trees where skeletons lurk and you can fight them, dig down into the ground and discover an abandoned mine with treasures."

"We really did intend to come up with something!" House House developer Stuart Gillespie-Cook tells IGN over email. "We'd always just called it 'goose game' internally, but when we had to upload footage of it for a festival, we wanted to make it clear that wasn't the final name, so we put it up as Untitled Goose Game. FIFA 20 Legacy Edition (Switch) Review

There's honestly no genuine reason I could give you to purchase FIFA 20 on the Nintendo Switch if you already own FIFA 19 on Switch. I don't generally share the sentiment of the crowd that labels sports games as the same every year, but when it comes to FIFA 20 Legacy Edition, all of the comment section tropes are valid. For a series already drowning in microtransaction debate, the Switch version really doesn't help EA's case in currying gamers' favour by essentially offering nothing but a barebones roster update for nearly the price of a full game. A 'macrotransaction', if you will.

Last year, I had this to say about FIFA 19's gameplay on Nintendo Switch:

Speaking to IGN at a recent The Last of Us Part 2 hands-on event, creative director Neil Druckmann told IGN about how the dogs add another level of morally difficult choice to combat.

"Dogs are...interesting in that…it feels pretty messed up to kill a dog, especially when you hear it yelp," Druckmann said. "You're left with this situation where, 'OK do I want to ghost this whole setup,' which, you don't have to kill a single dog in this scenario

Nintendo Switch Lite Review

The original Nintendo Switch no longer feels like a proper portable device now that I've used the Switch Lite. This new slimmed-down version reminds me of the Game Boy Advance in look and feel, offering a cheaper and more attractive way to play the Switch's incredible library on the go. Of course, it comes at the cost of its signature ability to dock and play on a TV, sacrificing a whole lot of flexibility in how you play. But while the Lite can't actually "switch," it certainly does the mode it's stuck in well enough to satisfy anybody looking to replace their aging Nintendo 3DS. In fact, if I'm playing a game in handheld mode anyway, I'd rather do so on a Switch Lite than on a full-fledged Switch.

Nintendo's Mobile Game Ventures Never Amounted To Much

In 2015, the late Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata took to a Japanese stage to make an announcement that could conceivably turn the tide of the company's history. In one of the last major deals that Iwata made before his passing a few months later, the executive announced that Nintendo would be developing software for mobile devices. Nintendo was acquiescing to angry shareholders upset that the Japanese developer was not leveraging their properties in the high-revenue mobile market and, to observers at the time, potentially changing everything we knew about the company.

But that would not be the case. It has been over four years since that announcement was made, three years since Shigeru Miyamoto landed in San Francisco to lend his creations and credibility to Apple's 2016 keynote, two years since Nintendo overhauled its sales tactics for the mobile market, and its mobile games have not changed the world. They have barely changed the company, which is both a consequence of Nintendo's own plans for mobile and its  lack of experience in the arena. However you look at it, the house that Mario built has failed to make the dent in the mobile game industry that everyone assumed it would.

Iconic Star Wars Villain Teased in New Jedi: Fallen Order Trailer

Respawn released a new trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and there may be a very sneaky cameo from an iconic Star Wars villain: Darth Vader.

To be clear, you can't actually see Darth Vader in the new Jedi: Fallen Order trailer. Instead, you can hear a distinct breath at the 0:48 second mark of the new trailer. Right as the new protagonist Cal Kestis opens a mysterious door to an ancient temple, you can hear the familiar hiss of Darth Vader breathing.

Whether Darth Vader will actually appear in Jedi: Fallen Order is unclear, but that breathing sound is pretty unmistakable. Furthermore, the trailer is set to a slowed down, piano cover of Vader's Imperial theme. If these aren't confirmations, they're at least very strong hints that Vader may make an appearance in Jedi: Fallen Order.

The Last of Us Part 2 Won't Have Any Multiplayer at All

The Last of Us Part 2 returns to the world of Ellie and Joel, but not everything is coming back. Multiplayer for one, will not be a part of The Last of Us 2 experience.

In an interview with USG, Naughty Dog lead game designer Emilia Schatz explained the decision to not include a multiplayer mode in the highly-anticipated The Last of Us sequel. "We're focusing on a single-player experience, so we're just making a single-player game for this," Schatz said.

The news comes as a bit of a surprise as The Last of Us 2 co-director Anthony Newman told Polygon in an interview from 2018 that there would be multiplayer in the sequel. Either Newman misspoke, or development plans changed between then and now. IGN has reached out to Sony for confirmation, but you can watch our video preview above.

Death Stranding: Here's What Comes in Each Edition

Death Stranding is a PS4 exclusive set to release November 8. It comes from Kojima Productions, a development house headed up by Metal Gear's Hideo Kojima. What we know about the game comes mostly from a series of bizarre trailers that have been released over the past few years, starring the likes of Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, and Guillermo del Toro.

You can't play Death Stranding yet, but you can preorder it from a number of retailers. Here's everything you need to know to lock down a copy for yourself.

eFootball PES 2020 Review

If patterns hold true, EA's FIFA 20 will no doubt sell enough physical copies to reach to the Moon and back – but when it comes to on-pitch action, there's only one soccer game this season that truly shoots for the stars. eFootball PES 2020 – to use its horrible full name – is one of Konami's finest football games in years. Certainly of the console generation, but there's an argument to say this is the best in what used to be known as the Pro Evolution Soccer series since PES' PS2 pomp… even if the menus haven't improved much since then.

If you put a lot of stock in an alluring user experience, you'll probably have a few gripes with PES 2020 (which I refuse to stop calling it, Konami). Even after a facelift, the menus are pretty bad; a forlorn love letter to an era of awful PS2 menu music and cluttered formation screens. Yes, the songs that play in the background are now a little less ear-offending than before, yet place PES next to FIFA 20's predictably slick, Sky Sports-aping presentation and this really is a 'Champions League vs Johnstone Paint Trophy' scenario.

Why The Last of Us Part 2 Isn't Open World

Naughty Dog didn't intend to make its biggest game ever with The Last of Us Part II, back according to Creative Director (and co-writer) Neil Druckmann, the ambitions of the story necessitated it.

"We didn't set out to make the biggest game we've ever done, we set out to tell this really ambitious story that became the biggest game we've ever done. And that's why we took as long as we have," Druckmann told me after my recent hands-on time with The Last of Us Part II.

"The story we laid out four years ago is really complex, has a large cast of characters. The core of it is simple, but where it goes and the twist and turns are complex," he said. "We needed more time for cinematics, we needed more locations, we needed more types of enemies. So the scope of it kept growing."

The Last of Us Part 2 Creative Director on Joel's Role in the Sequel

The Last of Us Part II's release date trailer gave us our first proper look at the first game's protagonist, Joel, as he appears in the upcoming sequel. And given Joel's relative absence in footage so far, as well as in the more than two hours I played of The Last of Us Part II, I was curious if that implied a downsized role or importance in the sequel.

So while speaking to Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog Vice President and Creative Director of The Last of Us Part 2, I asked whether we should take Joel's smaller role so far as indicative of his importance to Ellie in the sequel. Watch the video above to see his full response, plus some new gameplay from the sequel.

"Their relationship is strained. Some of it is because teenagers will be teenagers, and some of it is because of their history, which is why you haven't seen them together a lot," he said. "So much of The Last of Us is about this duo and their dynamic and how they are together, how they play together. I will say Joel plays a major part of this game."

The Last of Us Part 2: What We Think After 2 Hours of Play

After just over two hours of my first hands-on time with The Last of Us Part 2, I finished my last encounter, and let out one of the longest-held breaths of my gaming life. Following many tense battles with clickers and humans alike, I'm absolutely confident in Naughty Dog's impressive, brutal combat, set in a richly-detailed world. And I'm equally intrigued by the teases of The Last of Us Part 2's story I glimpsed throughout my demo, including a knockout performance by returning lead Ashley Johnson as Ellie.

This preview for The Last of Us Part 2 will clearly mark story-focused elements, for those who wish to know nothing about the narrative content shown in our demo. Also, be sure to watch the video preview above, which features new gameplay from The Last of Us Part 2.

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Preview - An Exciting Reset

The second you hop into Shadowkeep you notice that things under the hood are different. The less visually apparent Artifact, Armor 2.0 and mod changes will have a huge impact on how you choose to craft your play style and its necessity becomes immediately apparent when you first arrive on the moon.

Called here by Eris Morn, a glowy green-eyed friend of the Vanguard, you'll find that the location is less than hospitable, even if you ended the last expansion as the strongest of guardians. The first enemies you encounter upon landing are well above your level as indicated by the sword icons above their head. I took that as a message from Bungie that they wanted us to hear loud and clear. This Season is going to challenge you. This is a new Destiny. Several times during our exploration we found enemies we couldn't even damage in locations like the Temple of Crota, or even just off the beaten path from main story quests. Experience points, gear, and leveling will play a bigger part than ever before and I love this new layer of complexity and challenge that's being added.

Code Vein Review

If you've seen a trailer or any preview footage for Code Vein, the elevator pitch is clear: It's an "anime Soulslike" – an action-RPG that promises the steep challenge and cautious combat that we've all become very acquainted with in recent years. Code Vein doesn't simply layer generic anime style and storytelling on top of a Souls clone and call it a day, though: its unique post-apocalyptic sci-fi-meets-anime horror atmosphere stands out, and its flexible class system and an AI partner distinguish it from its peers mechanically. Some of those ideas make things more frustrating than they need to be at times, but in this kind of game, a healthy dose of frustration comes with the territory. Code Vein deserves some credit for experimenting with this firmly established formula in ways others often don't.

Mario Kart Tour Review in Progress

Nintendo's mobile efforts have been divisive to say the least. Since the launch of Super Mario Run in 2016 it has struggled to combine its traditional quality of gameplay with mobile's monetization in a fair and effective way. Few people seemed happy with Mario Run's premium price of $10, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp's dearth of content made it less than exciting to invest in, and Dragalia Lost, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Dr. Mario World all used familiar but frustrating microtransaction tactics that worked against the gameplay. After racing through the early hours of Mario Kart Tour, it seems Nintendo is still struggling with this difficult hurdle in this free-to-play version for iOS and Android. The price tags next to Tour's microtransactions are surprisingly big, but the actual driving works well and often feels impressively similar to a traditional Mario Kart game.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond Announced + First Hands-On Impressions

Medal of Honor is back in a way you probably didn't expect. Respawn Entertainment, makers of Apex Legends, Titanfall, and the upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, is turning its attention to one of new-ish parent company EA's veteran (but dormant) properties. Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is a World War II first-person shooter, as you'd expect. But what you probably wouldn't have imagined is that it's a VR game that's exclusive to Oculus Rift (it is, in fact, published by Oculus Studios). Its release date, for now, is the very vague "2020."

The new Medal of Honor takes place over three Acts made up of many missions each, and the Respawn team says the campaign lasts 10-12 hours – a lot by VR standards. I played a training level and a couple of missions. In the former, you're taught the basics, albeit in VR. Some weapons can be held with two hands, upping their accuracy. And it is pretty neat that you can pull the pin out of a grenade with your teeth by raising the held grenade to your mouth.

How Marvel's Avengers Could Succeed Where so Many Online Co-op Games Have Failed

After a reveal at E3 earlier this summer that left everyone somewhat confused and conflicted instead of excited, Square Enix and Marvel finally gave us a hands-on look at their upcoming Avengers game at Gamescom 2019.

Now that the veil has been lifted a bit higher, we know a lot more about what it as a whole might look like — and how, in fact, it could seriously make story and character matter to players in an online co-op game.

In so many online games out right now, the story just feels like set dressing for the overall gameplay loop. In Destiny, your Guardian exists, but they don't really have a tangible presence — you're just a camera with a gun (or sword), and one of many similar murderdrones at that. Similarly, in Warframe or The Division, the player character is a mute slate, devoid of personality save for emotes and whatever character backstory the player conjures up in their own mind.

Mario Kart Tour's Paid Subscription Costs More Than Switch Online

Mario Kart Tour - Nintendo's newest free-to-start mobile game - has begun rolling out on both iOS and Android. With that roll out, its approach to paid content has also become clear, which comes in the form of the Gold Pass, a subscription service that costs $4.99 / £4.99 a month (Australian pricing not available at time of writing).

That subscription nets you a series of rewards (including racers, karts and in-game currency), access to the game's 200cc mode, and the ability to earn badges for playing certain challenges. A two-week free trial is available, after which the paid service will automatically kick in.

It's a slightly measly offering when compared to other subscription services. That pricing puts it a dollar / pound above the monthly cost of the Switch's entire online service (which offers NES and SNES games as part of the cost), not to mention the same price as Apple Arcade, which includes dozens of games for the cost.

Doctor Who: The Edge of Time Puts Puzzles on a Spaceship

Recently I got to take a deeper look inside the game, in which after a brief five-second look at the TARDIS (this VR control room being the closest I'm likely to get to a childhood dream come true), I was ushered forth into the corridors of a spaceship. Fitted out in a decor that wouldn't look entirely out of place in a classic Robert Holmes episode of Who, the ship is home to a laser lock puzzle that you can watch unfold in the gameplay below. Sony's Third State of Play Was...Fine (But The Last of Us Part Two Looks Amazing)

Sony's third State of Play was an aggressively fine showcase for its upcoming line-up, orchestrated as a reminder that there are still games coming out exclusively for the console in the remainder of 2019 and early 2020. But even if its first 18 minutes consisted of relatively small announcements, the latest trailer for The Last of Us Part Two delivered on the requisite heartbreak, violence, horror, and of course, release date.

It started off strong. The opening trailer was Humanity, a new video game from Enhance (Rez Infinite, Tetris Effect) and Tokyo-based design studio Tha.Ltd, and a highlight of this State of Play. It initially looked like you manipulate masses of people in a variety of cute ways, but the fact it quickly descended into violence was surprising, in a good way. After all, if you're going to name your video game Humanity, I expect some sort of commentary about our collective terribleness when it comes to the way we treat each other.

Nintendo Switch deals have cooled down substantially since the introduction of the Nintendo Switch model with better battery life. Borderlands 3 Is 2K's Fastest Selling Game Ever

Borderlands 3's publisher 2K says the looter shooter sold over five million copies during its first five days on the market, making it the fastest-selling game in the company's history.

That works out at 50 percent more sales than Borderlands 2 during the same launch window - a game which went on to sell over 22 million units.

The high figures were achieved despite backlash from fans when it was announced the PC version of Borderlands 3 would be an Epic Games exclusive. A press release from 2K announcing the sales records draws attention to the store figures in particular, saying "Borderlands 3 delivered the highest pre-order sales figures to date for a 2K title, as well as broke pre-order records with the Epic Games Store. Initial sales of Borderlands 3 have exceeded the label's expectations and, in particular, PC sales of the title through the Epic Games Store have been incredibly strong."

PlayStation 5 Will Include Power Saving Feature to Tackle Climate Change

The PlayStation 5 will have an optional setting to slash the amount of power the next-generation console consumes in standby mode.

In a blog post, Sony announced it's working with the United Nations as part of its "Playing For The Planet" initiative, which aims to mobilise gamers to take an active role in combating climate change. Part of this effort involves partnered companies like PlayStation examining ways they can reduce their carbon footprint, and Sony is committing to working sustainable features into its new console's design.

"The next generation PlayStation console will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (which we estimate can be achieved at around 0.5 W)," writes Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. "If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes."

Batman: Arkham Origins Dev Teases Cryptic Images While Celebrating Batman Day

Batman: Arkham Origins developer WB Montreal posted a video celebrating Batman Day early Sunday morning, which contained a series of cryptic images that could be teasing a new Batman game.

In what appeared to be nothing more than a 30-second clip of a city building being illuminated by the Bat signal (a somewhat common occurrence on Batman Day), four different images flash by every few seconds. Here's each image as they appear while paused, courtesy of Twitter user @NYCWallSpider.

Downton Abbey Trounces Rambo: Last Blood and Ad Astra at the Box Office

The posh upstairs/downstairs antics of Downton Abbey: The Movie - the cinematic sequel to Julian Fellowes' hit TV series - was enough of a dapper draw to rake in $31 million in its opening weekend. It's a handsome haul that proved too much to overcome for Sylvester Stallone's Rambo: Last Blood and Brad Pitt's sci-fi flick, Ad Astra.

Adding in the overseas box office, Downton Abbey's pulled in $30.8 million, bringing its entire run so far to $61.8 million. Which is the type of take vs. budget (a meager $13 million) that might have Focus Features and Universal Pictures International working feverishly to craft a sequel.

Last Blood and Ad Astra didn't perform poorly however, with Pitt's well-reviewed space mystery snagging second place with $19.2 million. It was enough to just barely edge out Stallone's final installment in the 37-year Rambo franchise, which made $19 million.
