Mario Kart Tour - Nintendo's newest free-to-start mobile game - has begun rolling out on both iOS and Android. With that roll out, its approach to paid content has also become clear, which comes in the form of the Gold Pass, a subscription service that costs $4.99 / £4.99 a month (Australian pricing not available at time of writing).
That subscription nets you a series of rewards (including racers, karts and in-game currency), access to the game's 200cc mode, and the ability to earn badges for playing certain challenges. A two-week free trial is available, after which the paid service will automatically kick in.
It's a slightly measly offering when compared to other subscription services. That pricing puts it a dollar / pound above the monthly cost of the Switch's entire online service (which offers NES and SNES games as part of the cost), not to mention the same price as Apple Arcade, which includes dozens of games for the cost.
