How Pokémon Sun and Moon Are Improving the Pokemon Formula

We recently spent two hours with Pokemon Sun, and it feels like we barely scratched the surface.

Right away, Sun (and presumably Moon, though we didn't get to play it) targets Gen 1 nostalgia. You've traveled from the Kanto region to Alola with your mom and her Meowth, and even the decor in your room reflects where you came from — there are Pikachu and Ditto dolls but nothing connected to any other regions. There's also a Nintendo console, a Wii U, in your room, same as always.

But Sun and Moon also draw upon the original generation in more subtle ways. Before you even get your first Pokemon, there's a long cutscene featuring Tapu Koko, the guardian deity Pokemon of one of the four main islands of Alola. It reminded me a lot of the first episode of the anime, with that brief Ho-Oh sighting — you get very close to something rare and far more powerful than anything you're ready for, and it's a taste of what's to come. The camera work in this opening scene is more complicated than what we've seen in previous Pokemon games, too. It's cinematic, and though characters can look a little rough the closer the camera gets to them, it's engaging. It brought back my familiar desire to explore and learn more about the region.
