Hacker Convicted After Stealing $16 Million in FIFA Coins

Hacker Anthony Clark, 24, from California, has been convicted of wire fraud following a scheme that involved defrauding EA of FIFA coins to the value of $16 million.

As Eurogamer reports, the popularity of FIFA worldwide has led to black market trading of the game's in-game currency. In short, the currency, which can be purchased with real world money, has a value online where it can be sold without EA's permission for less than it costs to buy it legally.

The FBI accused Clark and three other co-conspirators – Nick Castellucci, 24, of New Jersey, Ricky Miller, 24, of Arlington, Texas, and Eaton Zveare, 24, of Lancaster, Virginia – of building software which logged thousands of FIFA matches within a matter of seconds, resulting in EA's servers crediting Clark and co. with coins they had "earned" from gameplay.
