No Man's Sky Review in Progress Archive

On day three of my No Man's Sky journey, I find myself losing faith that there's something better waiting for me out there. I've jumped to more than a dozen stars and passed through a black hole that told me I'd leapt more than 500 light years toward the galactic center. What wonders awaited me on the other side? Pretty much exactly the same things I'd been doing since I awoke on that first world. At this point No Man's Sky is in desperate need of radical changes in its gameplay loop to hold my interest. What's here just doesn't have enough good mechanics and shows no signs of evolving into something better, and right now is too frequently repetitive or frustrating.

If all you want is a virtual nature walk on weird alien worlds, No Man's Sky can provide that for you in limitless supply. Yes, the impressive technology that creates these countless worlds can produce some strikingly pretty sights. I've seen a few landscapes that've made me stop and say "wow," including one where impossible, unsupported bridges of twisted rock stretched for miles and crisscrossed around the planet. But just as often they're barren and dull, with nothing to distinguish them. That contrast does help me to better appreciate the colorful ones while I'm there, at least.

Top 10 Scariest Games of All Time

Horror games can conjure a wide range of emotions, from disgust and panic to the lingering pangs of existential dread.

The scariest games excel at nailing just one or two of these feelings really well, or send us on an unrelenting rollercoaster fueled by all manner of terror. With that criteria in mind, we set out to name the top ten scariest games ever made. Let's begin.

Necromorphs define the terror of Dead Space with their gruesome designs and unpredictable natures. Unlike the foes of most horror games, these guys don't go down with a bullet to the brain — sometimes their heads aren't even located where they should be.

PlayStation VR Needs 60 Square Feet to Play

The space requirement for PlayStation VR has been revealed, as Sony has confirmed its upcoming virtual reality headset will require 60 square feet of room to play.

The suggested dimensions for PSVR's play area is 9.8 feet by 6.2 feet, which works out to be 60.8 square feet, according to the Sony website, as spotted by Polygon.

Despite the needed play area, Sony suggests PlayStation VR users sit while using the headset. "Limit your use of PS VR to within the play area," a brochure reads. "Remain seated whenever possible. If an application requires you to stand while wearing the VR headset, follow the application instructions carefully, and maintain awareness of your surroundings."

Kingdoms of Amalur Dev Not Indicted With Criminal Charges

The four-year long investigation into Kingdoms of Amalur developer 38 Studios has resulted in no criminal charges being made against the company, which has been defunct since 2012.

"The quantity and quality of the evidence of any criminal activity fell short of what would be necessary to prove any allegation beyond a reasonable doubt and as such the Rules of Professional Conduct precluded even offering a criminal charge for grand jury consideration," states the official press release.

The Rhode Island Police Department stated that while there isn't sufficient evidence to press criminal charges, their findings should not be factored into any pending civil litigation, stating, "Results from the criminal investigation should not be imparted on the civil case in any aspect."

Ghostbusters Game Developer Files for Bankruptcy

Developer Fireforge, creator of the recent Ghostbusters movie tie-in game, has filed for bankruptcy.

According to Kotaku, Fireforge Games filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on July 15, just three days after releasing Ghostbusters, a game which was not received well upon its release.

Fireforge has had a rough few years, starting development on two projects respectively codenamed Zeus - which was to be published by Razer - and Atlas, which was funded by Chinese investment holding company Tencent. Development on both projects ceased shortly after it began.

Kotaku reports Fireforge now owes $11.3 million to Tencent. In addition, Fireforge is engaged in a lawsuit with Singapore-based company Min Productions (owned by Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan), which alleges Fireforge failed to deliver on its contract with Zeus, and instead took the money to use on Atlas' development.

Like Pokemon Go? You'll Love the Trading Card Game

With Pokemon Go hype sweeping the globe, more people than ever are returning to Pokemon or discovering it for the first time. The more Pokemaniacs the better, as far as we're concerned. That's why we want to spotlight another way to enjoy it: playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG).

If you were around when Pokemon first exploded onto the scene in the late 90s, then you probably remember how Pokemon cards were everywhere. At first it was a fun way to enjoy the franchise in addition to the TV show and the Game Boy game, but things quickly got out of control once kids started arguing, fighting, and elbow-dropping each other over them. The cards were worth quite a bit, and that led to kids (and adults) ripping people off with bad trades or outright stealing them like some kinda no-good Team Rocket goons. It wasn't long before schools banned them and parents refused to buy their kids anymore booster packs.

A new trailer for Pokemon Sun and Moon has revealed a raft of details about the upcoming games, including new Alola Forms of existing Pokemon, 6 brand new Pokemon, the new Poké Ride feature, new Z-Moves and a new quest, The Island Challenge.

Released today, the trailer unveils Alola Forms, sub-species of existing Pokemon that are "thriving in Alola". Creating Ice-type versions of Vulpix, Ninetails, Sandshrew and Sandslash and turning Exeggutor into a bizarre giraffe/palm tree hybrid, they are brilliant.

Here's the trailer:

The Pokemon Company also revealed six new Pokemon, including Gumshoos and Mudbray - each part of the evolution chain for already-revealed new monsters Yungoos and Mudsdale - as well as Oricorio, a dancing bird that changes style depending on the Alolan island it's on.

Batman: The Telltale Series Episode 1: Realm of Shadows Review

The first episode of Telltale's Batman series, entitled Realm of Shadows, quickly introduces an exciting, intricate story of politics, and constantly shifting, unpredictable relationships. It layers on top of that all of the social pressure that comes with making any kind of public appearance as Bruce Wayne - one of the richest and most prominent people in a rapidly deteriorating city. The mixture is a sometimes unevenly paced but always multi-faceted and complex adventure that's laced in gorgeous, high-action cinematics that truly do Batman, and his brutal, fear-inducing tactics justice.

Anyone who has played a Telltale game will be familiar with the punishing consequences of having to make tough choices under the pressure of a timer, and Bruce's position as a political influencer make even a public handshake a tense decision. Whether it was choosing to publicly back Harvey Dent's political campaign or confronting Selina Kyle, I almost always felt like I had made the wrong move, or totally screwed up an interaction with another important member of Gotham's social hierarchy. The two separate roles you have to play are absolutely to credit for that intensity – how will this choice affect Bruce, and how will it affect Batman? On top of that, you have to consider how it will affect the other five characters who are intertwined into each of the uniquely appealing subplots, and where you hope to end up.

Pokemon Go: Niantic on Why It Removed '3-Step' Tracking

Pokemon Go developer Niantic has outlined to players why it removed the '3-step' tracking display from the game in a new post on the Pokemon Go Facebook page.

"The original feature, although enjoyed by many, was also confusing and did not meet our underlying product goals. We will keep you posted as we strive to improve this feature."

According to Niantic third-party services were also to blame.

"We have limited access by third-party services which were interfering with our ability to maintain quality of service for our users and to bring Pokemon Go to users around the world. The large number of users has made the roll-out of Pokemon Go around the world an... interesting… challenge."
