Mario + Rabbids Prototype Was Made in Under 4 Weeks

When Ubisoft Milan pitched its idea for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle to Nintendo, the team had just three and a half weeks to craft a playable demo before showing it to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

"The first time we proposed the prototype to Miyamoto, we had only three weeks and a half to come up with a playable prototype, because we truly wanted to show him gameplay," creative director Davide Soliani said on the debut episode of IGN Expert Mode.

Ant-Man and the Wasp's Ghost Explained

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting bigger all the time, with next year's Ant-Man and the Wasp adding several new heroes and villains to the mix. One of those new additions is Ghost (played by Hannah John-Kamen), a sinister villain who -- in the comics anyway -- lives to make life miserable for the business tycoons of the Marvel U.

If you're not familiar with Ghost, here's everything you need to know about the villain and his/her comic book background.

Where most Marvel villains are busy trying to take over the world or feuding with their superhero nemesis of choice, Ghost is more motivated by a love of anarchy and a desire to punish oppressive corporations. Ghost has dedicated himself (more on the character's gender in a sec!) to attacking the largest corporate empires in the Marvel Universe, using a combination of elite hacking skills and phasing abilities to dismantle them from the inside out. Sometimes he works as a hired mercenary performing acts of corporate espionage. Other times he chooses his own targets. But either way, Ghost is a real thorn in the side of powerful businessmen in general and Tony Stark in particular.

Street Fighter 2 Getting Special Edition Super NES Cartridge

To celebrate 30 years of street fighting action, iam8bit and Capcom have teamed up to release a 1990's nostalgia-fueled special edition of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior.

This isn't just some repackaged re-release, either. It's an actual, working Super Nintendo cartridge in a tri-fold box and includes a "premium instruction booklet," along with "retro pack-in surprises."

There are two variants of this amazing cartridge: one in "Opaque Ryu Headband Red" and the other in "Glow in the Dark Blanka Green." The glowing cart is translucent in addition to luminescent, so it's got even more '90s cred.

The red version is limited to 4,500 copies, while the glow in the dark variant is limited to just 1,000. And they're randomly inserted into the packages, too, so buying one is a bit of a roll of the dice. But that makes it exciting, too.

Gigantic Review

Its huge monsters put on a great and imposing show, but Gigantic is really all about making its action-MOBA gameplay accessible. Its characters challenge, but they're not ultra demanding. Its multi-phase battles require strategy and teamwork, but you don't have to be a master tactician to succeed. It takes time to learn, but we're talking weeks instead of months. The drawback is that its short, rapid-fire matches risk retreading the same ground a bit too often.

There's currently only one way to play Gigantic: a 5v5 battle where teams must gather energy to power the massive monsters that sit on either side of the arena. These Guardians are far more interesting than ordinary MOBA objectives because they're active participants rather than stationary punching bags, and the few times they battle each other during a match are always exciting. Watching one swoop in from its perch, wrestle its rival to the ground, and expose the weak point for its team to attack is really cool, and I wished they'd spend more time in action instead of holding back.

GTA Online Update Adds Battle Royale-Style Mode

Smuggler's Run, the latest update from Grand Theft Auto Online, rolled out today, bringing with it a new Adversary Mode called Motor Wars.

This new battle royale-style mode, which bears some striking similarities to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, blends "the adrenaline rush of Drop Zone with the claustrophobic tension of a match of Penned In," putting players in a "deadly scavenger hunt."

Motor Wars pits up to four teams against each other in a fight for survival on a striking map. Players will parachute into the battlefield, which features an array of weaponry—including guns, explosives and weaponized vehicles—that can be used to take down the opposing teams.

Smuggler's Run is the nineteenth update for GTA Online. In addition to Motor Wars, the update features an aircraft-based smuggling ring that's managed by "Nervous" Ron Jakowski and run by the player, who must gain and distribute illegal goods from their warehouse.

Microsoft has announced - albeit in a fairly low-key fashion - that it is partnering with 343 Industries "to bring future Halo experiences into mixed reality".

The news comes buried towards the bottom of a more general report from Microsoft technical fellow Alex Kipman, providing an update on the company's mixed reality services as a whole. Among general information about its range of headsets and mixed reality-ready PCs, there's a lengthy list of 'first wave' content partners who will be working with Microsoft on "mixed reality experiences" - including Sony and Hulu, among others - with Microsoft's partnership with 343 Industries given pride of place.

Absolver Review

The second I traded blows with Jinn Mesca, so-called Prime Disciple of the Golden Bottle, I knew I wanted to be like him. Absolver's "drunken master" warded off my blows and landed his own while swaying like a man fresh off a bender, punching me lightly even when I thought I'd successfully dodged. I returned to Jinn several times at his perch beneath a large tree until I'd learned all his moves and, in time, could beat him at his own game. I became the drunken master, and if Jinn had been a player instead of an NPC, I know I could have taught him a few moves myself. This master/apprentice relationship makes each fight in this action-roleplaying game a learning experience, and the idea meshes well with the surreal martial arts vibe woven throughout Absolver.

See Rick and Morty Driving in Mario Kart 8 in Modded GTA 5

This may be the most ridiculous mod combination I've seen yet. YouTuber Modded Games has dropped Rick and Morty into Grand Theft Auto 5, then put them both into the Zelda course from Mario Kart 8 (still in GTA 5) and made Morty race around the track.

Watch this lunacy in action right here:

The full video has Rick and Morty exploring other games and locations to show off a "portal gun" mod from the show, including the Last of Us universe and GTA 4's Liberty City. You can watch the whole thing right here.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole Rated in Australia Without Incident

If South Park: The Stick of Truth's classification hassles in Australia back in 2013 had you concerned for the fate of the sequel within these shores, relax; Ubisoft has today confirmed South Park: The Fractured But Whole has been rated R18+ and will be released in Australia "completely uncut and uncensored."

The game, and its associated rating advice, is yet to appear in the Australian Classification Board's database.

South Park: The Stick of Truth encountered problems in Australia in 2013 when it was refused classification twice. A third submission from Ubisoft, which famously removed the problem sequence and replaced it with a still image of a crying koala, was eventually rated R18+ on November 21 with the consumer advice "High impact crude humour, sex scenes and references to sexual violence."

South Park ESRB Description Is Appropriately Gross

South Park: The Fractured but Whole has an 'M' rating by the US Entertainment Software Rating Board, which probably isn't too surprising. What is somewhat unexpected, however, is the absurd level of detail the game takes in its ESRB rating description.

It begins fairly innocuously, reading like a standard ratings board description.

"This is a role-playing game, based on the animated South Park TV show, in which players assume the role of a new kid in town embarking on an adventure to uncover an evil criminal element..."

After the opening, it details some of the combat, touches on weapons and spell systems, and warns of some dismemberment and decapitations. It's extremely dry, extremely expected copy. Then things start to go off the rails.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Temporarily Becomes Most Played Game On Steam

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, for a moment, had the most concurrent players of any game on Steam.

Nintendo Switch Nindies Showcase Announced

A new Nintendo Switch Nindies Showcase will be held this week, Nintendo has announced.

The showcase, a Nintendo Direct-style reveal of a host of indie games coming to the Switch, will air on Wednesday, August 30 at 10 a.m. PT.

No information has been revealed about what games will be included in the showcase, but it comes just ahead of PAX West 2017, at which Nintendo will have a daily Nindie Arcade space, as well as a Nindies@Night event on August 31.

Nintendo's first Nindies Showcase for the Nintendo Switch aired earlier this year and included the announcement of 17 games for the Switch. Those reveals included the already released Overcooked! Special Edition, Mr. Shifty, and more, as well as the yet-to-debut Switch versions of Yooka-Laylee and Stardew Valley. Stardew's developers recently offered an update about what to expect from that game. IGN had a chance to preview that slate of Nindies following the Showcase, including several that have still yet to be released.

While Gearbox Software is no stranger to the Half-Life franchise, having working with Valve on the Opposing Force and Blue Shift expansion packs, as well as the PS2 version of Half-Life, studio president and CEO Randy Pitchford isn't so sure his team should return to the franchise.

On the latest episode of our monthly interview show IGN Unfiltered, we asked Pitchford if, given the opportunity, Gearbox would be interested in making the long-awaited and seemingly never-coming third episode that continues the Half-Life 2 story, and he replied with an air of uncertainty.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Review

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is an unanticipated game that's full of surprises. Its XCOM-style, turn-based tactics gameplay is just about the last thing I'd have expected from either Mario or Rabbids, but it's absurdist charm works against the odds and it's far more difficult and meatier than you probably think. When you break it down, a lot of the challenge comes down to pure trial and error, but the moment of figuring out its tactical puzzles and chaining together a string of attacks delivers a strong shot of satisfaction.

The bizarre story that brings Ubisoft's Rabbids into the Mushroom Kingdom of Nintendo's Mario and literally mashes them together embraces the fact that it's complete nonsense on every level and just rolls with it. I couldn't help but think of the plot of The Fly as a sci-fi gadget merged unwitting denizens of Mario's universe with an unintentional interdimensional invasion of idiot rabbit-things. There are some decent jokes that arise from the slurry, including at least one Game of Thrones reference, and a lot is owed to the Rabbids' almost entirely physical comedy. I don't understand why the eight-character roster includes both normal and only vaguely related Rabbid-ized versions of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi, but I accepted it because of the humor. That said, I don't think I'll ever be totally okay with seeing those characters shoot enemies with guns (ranging from a knockoff of Mega Man's arm cannon to straight-up shotguns and Gattling guns) when I'm accustomed to seeing them shoot fireballs from white-gloved hands, but other than that it's the good kind of dumb fun.

What Makes a Great Tutorial?

Tutorials are essential to every game experience. In that time we learn the game mechanics, the key players, and of course the main quest. The first few hours of a game can easily make or break our opinion of it.

So what makes a great tutorial? Beyond just explaining the controls, what do some games do that hook you at the start and keep you coming back?

A bad tutorial can be boring, it can be tedious and repetitive. But a good tutorial can be funny, insightful, entertaining, and give you a great first impression of the world you're going to spend hours in.

From the Cemetery of Ash in Dark Souls 3 to Vault 101 in Fallout 3, here are some great tutorial levels and the archetypes that hold them together.

Splatoon 2: The Ideal Online Shooter for Non-shooter Fans?

There are numerous reasons as to why I let the original Splatoon pass me by when it debuted on the Wii U in 2015, but chief among them was that, in recent years, I just haven't been enjoying online shooters like I used to. This is largely because I'm older and more anti-social now; I have less desire to talk to or even interact with strangers online while playing games, not that I've ever found much of what's said in online lobbies to be worth engaging in.

Because of this, if I do ever feel the need to dabble, it tends to be in those shooters that are large in scale and with a high number of concurrent players, or at least something in which I can go lone wolf, leave the mic unplugged, but still contribute to an overall team effort. To this end, the Battlefields and Titanfalls of this world have been solid options for me, but even then, my online investment in such games has been fleeting at best.

How PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Xbox Compares to PC

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is well-loved, even in its Early Access stages, for being an intense, tactical and difficult multiplayer experience, and porting a multiplayer game with 100 players per match from PC to console isn't without its challenges. The Xbox build of PUBG was playable on the show floor at this year's Gamescom, and there's a lot to adjust to, and a lot of unanswered questions.

Unsurprisingly, there were performance problems from the very beginning, but nothing remarkably out of the ordinary for PUBG. It's not a very pretty game, and the only noticeable graphical difference on the Xbox build seemed to be a slight change to draw distance, though that didn't seem to hinder gameplay in any negative way. The framerate was consistent and smooth, with developers aiming for, but currently unable to confirm, 60fps. It's still a bland, dull-looking game, but it ran almost as well as the current PC version, and I don't think console players will be disappointed.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Is Beautiful, Confusing, and Captivating

At Gamescom 2017, tucked away in a small room in Nintendo's press area, I got to spend forty minutes playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Monolith Soft's monstrous new Nintendo Switch RPG.

I was dropped into a save file more than a dozen hours into the game where my eclectic party of level 20 warriors were nudged to start attacking the first enemy we saw. "This should be easy," I thought. "There's five of us and one of whatever that thing is, so I should be able to fly through this quickly." I was quite wrong.

Xenoblade's battles are a frantic mix of charging icons, switching characters, finding and mashing buttons for short quick time events, and darting your eyes around every corner of the screen to manage a set of interconnected systems. There's a lot going on here, and I immediately realized even this low-level grunt was going to take some strategy and perseverance.

F1 2017 Review

In this year's Azerbaijan Grand Prix Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel had a real brain snap on track, pulling up alongside rival Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes and steering into him during a safety car restart. During the Russian Grand Prix, in the first year of my F1 2017 career, he's done something similar. He's turned into Hamilton at race pace and managed to tangle himself, Lewis, and my F1 wunderkind Jackie Speedweasel together for a date with the wall. I manage to extract my driver from the mess, grazing the wall and losing part of the front wing in the process, but Hamilton and Vettel's cars are toast; a snarl of carbon fibre shards and loose wheels. It's still very early days but the championship has pivoted in an instant.

Overwatch's Jeff Kaplan Details Mercy, D.Va Changes

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan announced some "big changes coming for Mercy" as well as other heroes, including D.Va, in a new developer update video, which you can watch below. All the changes noted are currently available to test in the Overwatch PTR.

Mercy's ultimate ability, Resurrect — which currently lets Mercy revive multiple dead teammates within range — will become a common second ability next to Guardian Angel, with some vital tweaks. The revamped Resurrect will become a single-target revival ability that relies on "a rather long cooldown."

The replacement for Mercy's Ultimate is called Valkyrie. When activated, it will allow Mercy to fly freely and buff all of her current abilities: extending the range for Guardian Angel and her healing and damage boost beams, allowing her beams to connect with multiple targets at once, and increasing the fire rate and damage of her Caduceus Blaster, for all the "Battle Mercys" out there.

Battlefield 1’s Incursions Mode Turns WW1 Into an eSport

I'm already bad at Battlefield 1 (I often find myself wishing there was War Poet class who earned tickets for sitting down in a barn and writing sadly as the bombs go off) so to find out that the brand new mode I was playing was a 5v5 match-up that puts a premium on skillful teamplay was worrying. To subsequently find out that the opposing team was full of eSports pros, and that I was the only English speaker on my team was positively frightening. The match went as you'd expect - but in its own cruel way, that teaches me everything I need to know about Incursions.

The mode twists series staple Conquest into a tight, fraught sport. Getting a kill, destroying a tank or capturing a point earns you one point. Earn 10 points and you win a set. 5 sets brings the match to half time. World War 1 has a half time now - that's weird. It's clear then, that this is Conquest, amplified. There are two certainties in Battlefield: death and tactics, and they mean more than ever here, making teamwork key.

Sea of Thieves Wants to be The World's Friendliest Multiplayer Game

On one of the walls In the Gamescom interview room for Sea of Thieves, a quote from a player called 'Clumsy George' is brought to my attention. It reads:

"But is this a game alone? I suspect them of making some kind of social project? We 4 or 5, almost perfect strangers were able to work together in 15 minutes like an oiled machine. We talked, we joked and dug up treasures like it was something we'd done for years…"

That quote, said Rare's Shelley Preston (Senior Designer), Joe Neate (Executive Producer), and Craig Duncan (Studio Head), came from a larger community post George posted about his time in the Sea of Thieves Insider Program, and spoke volumes about the community Rare is trying to create.

XCOM 2: War of the Chosen Review

Even with its procedural maps, XCOM 2's missions started feeling a little stale after a hundred hours or so. Enter War of The Chosen, a large-scale expansion which grafts on more than enough new variables to give that creeping sense of predictability a brutal beatdown.

Variety is War of the Chosen's biggest strength, and its long list of changes was very successful at making me rethink my established tactics. There are several new mission types, including clever new spins on Alien Supply Raids and Retaliations (the latter finally includes armed resistance soldiers who help you fight off the attackers – a little too effectively sometimes), extracting captured XCOM soldiers, assassinating Advent generals who'll flee to extraction points when you break concealment, evading ambushes, saving VIPs from zombie hordes, and more. Few of them rely on do-or-die turn-timers, which was a good call on Firaxis' part. I don't mind the occasional timed mission, but we have enough of those already.

Space Junkies Feels Like a VR First-Person Shooter Done Right

Perhaps at some point in the future, omnidirectional treadmills will become a fixture in every household, enabling proper 360 degree on-foot movement in virtual reality first-person shooters. Until that time, and with the exception perhaps of DOOM VR's dash and warp mechanic, most developers are making do with the unhappy marriage of head tracking for look controls with traditional thumbstick for movement, which is a system that at best breaks immersion and at worst leads to nausea.

Space Junkies avoids such issues with the simple solution of strapping every player into a jetpack. It doesn't matter that the movement of your feet isn't tracked by the game, because your feet never touch the ground in its anti-gravity arenas. It doesn't feel odd to be playing a virtual reality first-person shooter sitting down, because movement is handled by looking where you want to go and clicking the left thumbstick on the controller (in the case of my Gamescom demo, an Oculus Touch) in order to boost your jets and propel yourself in that direction.

LEGO Marvel 2 Is Assembling Marvel's Most Ludicrous Line-Up

The character select screen in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is, frankly, ridiculous. A sea of tiny portraits and question marks swims up the screen, so massive that it seems almost counter-intuitive - is that Sakaar Hulk, medieval Hulk, or Maestro, the evil Hulk from the future? Ah who cares, let's give them all a try. Hearing the developers speak about the game, I wouldn't be surprised if that roster started a lot smaller, and they just got a bit carried away.

The best LEGO games have been more than the sum of their plasticky parts, and it's that line-up, and the love that's gone into assembling it, that looks like it'll make the difference here. LEGO Marvel 2 is still a game designed to be a totally smooth ride for kids - I played through a boss fight against burning Norse demon, Surtur that amounted to a series of "square peg in square hole" puzzles; The Witness this is not. That means most characters have an ability or two at most - which is when having a retina-scrambling number of them comes into its own. It's tough to get bored when there's always something new to try.

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Has ‘A Chance’ of Coming to Switch

Square Enix has hinted at a potential future for Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition on Nintendo Switch.

Speaking to IGN at Gamescom, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata didn't rule out the possibility of the recently-announced mobile version coming to Nintendo's console.

"There is certainly a chance. It's certainly not zero," Tabata told IGN when asked about a Switch version. "Obviously we'd have to think about what the meaning and what the significance of bringing this to Switch would be. You know, whether people would want to play it and whether it would be the right thing to do for our team."

The Evil Within 2 Feels Familiar, But That's a Good Thing

At an early point during my hour-long demo of The Evil Within 2, returning protagonist Sebastian ran into a room full of swinging bodies, their bleeding faces obscured by white masks. There was a weird red symbol painted onto one of its concrete walls. A camera on a tripod was the only other object of note, so I looked through it. Suddenly, I saw a door. Had looking at the camera made it appear? I was disorientated. Then a multi-headed, nude monster with a buzz-saw for a hand burst through the wall and screamed her way towards me.

Oh yeah, this was The Evil Within, all right.

My time with the Evil Within 2 showed that while improvements have been made to the formula, it fundamentally remains the same. Sebastian is still a sort of stiff, bewildered protagonist, the monsters are still pulled from the golden era of Japanese horror, and the world is as grimy and oppressive as some of the darker moments of Jacob's Ladder, a source of inspiration for original Evil Within director Shinji Mikami. But of course, that combination of quirks made the original game so much fun in the first place.

Hideo Kojima Praises Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk

Game industry legend Hideo Kojima has sung the praises of Christopher Nolan's latest box office hit Dunkirk.

Kojima penned an article for Rolling Stone in which he compares Nolan's latest film to his own works and talks about how both make great efforts to convincingly depict war. In his collum, the Death Stranding creator explains why he believes "Dunkirk gave birth to a new kind of war movie."

"By refusing to rely on computer graphics, opting instead to create life-size sets and employ a large cast of extras, Christopher Nolan recreated the war movie construct," Kojima wrote.

Microsoft Talking to Sony About Cross-Play

Following the announcement of several games featuring cross-play between PCs and consoles, excluding the PlayStation 4, at E3 2017, a Microsoft executive has explained that they and Sony are in ongoing discussions about making cross-network play a reality some day.

Speaking to Game Reactor, Xbox Head of Marketing Aaron Greenberg confirmed the companies have discussed the possibility of cross-play and continue to do so. Greenberg remains hopeful that Sony will be supportive of the initiative.

"Absolutely, yeah. We're talking to Sony

, we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it," Greenberg told Game Reactor.

Madden NFL 18 Review: Final Review

Ask Tom Brady and Matt Ryan what they think about halftime adjustments. Those adjustments, major or minor, are the key to winning any football game – the types of championship-caliber adjustments we hoped for from Madden's move to the Frostbite Engine in Madden NFL 18. The engine has enhanced the graphics dramatically and added an immense amount of detail to the absolutely wonderful Longshot story mode, but EA Sports misses the opportunity to really make its mark by refreshing the gameplay in meaningful ways.

While playing a rematch of last season's Patriots vs. Falcons Super Bowl, it was easy to get distracted by the lighting effects and the improved body types, which, to my eye, have both taken the largest leap of any of Madden 18's graphical upgrades. While watching a replay I noticed details like how the glimmer of the sun flickered off of a receiver's helmet, and even while referees are announcing penalties you can see that the glare in their faces is real.

Hands-On with Total War: Warhammer 2's Sadistic Skaven Faction

It was the worst kept secret in video games, but we've now finally got absolute, official confirmation: the Skaven are coming to Total War: Warhammer 2. The race of humanoid rats are one of four playable factions coming to September's sequel, joining the High Elves, Dark Elves and Lizardmen.

Having now played the opening hour-or-so of the Skaven campaign, we're happy to report that the murderous, subterranean-dwelling rodents offer some distinctly different gameplay options to what we've seen in the first game.

Simply, if inhabiting a secret under-world and indulging in surprise attacks from the dark sounds appealing to you then you're going to adore the ugliness offered by the Skaven.

WWE 2K18: 6 Changes That Create a More Realistic Match

Die-hard wrasslin' fans know that there's nothing quite like the art of pro-wrestling.

It's not something you can easily replicate in a game since the matches - even the most basic ones - can contain so many moving parts that they wind up resembling a hybrid of a fight, a dance, a partnership, and a story. WWE 2K18's Executive Producer, Mark Little, is determined to chip away at this beast until the ultimate experience of working a fully realized and complex wrestling match is created.

During my brief hands-on with WWE 2K18 last week, I was able to experience some of this year's changes and improvements, all done in the name of giving fans the closest thing possible to a playable match. For last year's WWE 2K17, multi-man matches (including ladder matches) saw some significant tweaks that allowed for easier ladder placement along with a "roll out" feature that made for less clutter in the ring - the latter also helping create a cool resemblance to the way real Triple Threat and Fatal Fourway matches are constructed and executed in front of live crowds.

Wild West Online Aims to Fill Red Dead Redemption 2's PC Void

Wild West Online developer Stefan Bugaj headed me off at the pass, bringing up the elephant in the room (Red Dead Redemption 2) before I could.

"We were inspired by Westworld and the impending not-coming-to-PC Red Dead Redemption 2," he said with a smile. "Westerns started coming back. So we thought

would fill a fun unfulfilled gaming desire in the community."

You can see the entire demo I got from Bugaj in the four videos on this page, beginning with the one above. It's clearly still very early in development – note the total lack of any other people on the servers as of yet – but the team is cognizant of that and was happy to talk through their goals and intentions for WWO with me this week.

Details are fairly thin, but Android 18 will definitely be a playable character, and seems to have access to a special combo attack with Android 17, although whether the latter is actually playable or only appears as support is not yet confirmed.

Shenmue 3: Deep Silver Announced as Publisher

Shenmue 3 is one step closer, with the announcement that the long-gestating video game is to be published by Deep Silver.

In a press release available from the official Shenmue 3 site, series creator Yu Suzuki has spoken of his "confidence" in both the game and the new partnership, citing Deep Silver's "deep passion for bringing Japanese titles to the rest of the world". The publisher certainly has form - recent releases include both Persona 5 and Yakuza Kiwami.

It's been a long road for Shenmue 3 - the second game in the series debuted a full sixteen years ago on the Dreamcast and, despite a subsequent Xbox re-release, failed to perform well financially. Although the franchise seemed dead, Suzuki left original publishers Sega in 2011 to focus on his own studio - Ys Net - and in 2015 launched a Kickstarter to fund Shenmue 3, reaching his $2 million target in just nine hours and closing the campaign with over $6 million in donations - and soon after, Sony pledged to support the game with additional funding.
