PUBG Creator: We’ve Shown You Don’t Need Massive Marketing Budgets ‘To Sell a Lot of Copies’
Speaking to IGN at PAX Aus, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds creative director Brendan Greene has discussed how PUBG has reaped a huge amount of success without a massive advertising budget.
"We published on Steam, you know?" said Greene. "And that's allowed us to sell millions of copies without having any marketing budget essentially, or store copy…. We have shown that you don't need necessarily the same marketing or PR budget as a triple A game to really sell a lot of copies."
According to Greene, prior to the release of Battlegrounds on Steam Early Access, the team were hoping to sell "maybe five million copies, first year."

Ghosts of Tsushima What History Tells Us About Its Setting
While the opening cinematic had a lot of us thinking about Tenchu or Onimusha (or, in my case, Shogun Total War), the happiest part of the Ghost of Tsushima debut during Paris Games Week was the announcement that Sucker Punch would be developing the game. The studio's been silent for three years since the last Infamous DLC, so we're happy to see what the team behind Infamous and Sly Cooper has been up to.
And though there aren't many details yet on what the game is actually like, the historic setting does give us a couple of clues.
The game is set during the First Mongol Invasion of Japan, which took place in 1274. The Kublai Khan had already established a dynasty in China and claimed Korea. Upon reaching the sea, his next target was the island of Japan. He made multiple demands to the Emperor of Japan, encouraging him to submit to Mongol rule. Anticipating the Emperor would reject these offers, the Great Khan was, at the same time, constructing an invasion fleet. When the rejections did come, the Khan set sail with thousands of soldiers and hundreds of boats.

PUBG "Never Banned Anyone For Honking at Streamers"
Following PUBG streamers and honking car horns at them in-game has never been treated as a bannable offense, according to creative director Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene.
"A lot of our Steam reviews say 'don't buy this game because they ban people for honking at streamers,'" Greene said. "We've never banned anyone for honking at a streamer."
'Stream honking' surfaced as a popular method to annoy PUBG streamers several months ago. But while some players have been banned for 'stream sniping,' repeatedly hopping between lobbies with the intent to kill or harass specific streamers by using their live stream as a cheat sheet, Greene insists the honking itself has never resulted in a player being banned.

Horizon: Zero Dawn - The Frozen Wilds Preview
I have a sneaking suspicion Guerrilla Games knows that a lot of people didn't finish Horizon. After watching a hands-off demo of its Frozen Wilds expansion, the onus seems very much on adding more for those who might have been distracted while progressing through the game, offering new rewards, quality of life improvements and, most importantly, the ability to make snow angels in Photo Mode.
The Frozen Wilds is an estimated 15-hour chunk of extra material, set in a bowling ball of new territory in the far north of the main game's map. Its story runs concurrently with the main game, centering around the mystery of the so-called Daemon, a hidden force which is frenzying machines, setting up tentacular control towers that can repair and buff enemies, and making gorgeous blue smoke billow from the Death Mountain-like volcano at the center of this new area. It'll also offer a more focused look at the nomadic Banuk tribe, who we bumped into only briefly during the core game.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Mary-Jane Is a Playable Character
After the latest trailer for Insomniac's Spider-Man game, many (including us) thought they'd spotted a moment that indicated longtime Spidey cast member Mary Jane Watson would be playable - and Insomniac has now addressed that idea:
"Yeah!," said Insomniac creative director Bryan Intihar, speaking to IGN. "I can confirm, yes you actually play, at various stages of the game, Mary-Jane."
While he wouldn't be drawn on specifics, Intihar did hint that there would be more to playing Mary-Jane than simply guiding her around story sections:
"It's a very different experience to playing as Spider-Man," he explained, "and it stays true to her character, in terms of her background that she's a reporter for the Daily Bugle. It captures that feeling. Also, the other thing for us is that, even though we are creating a superhero world in the fantasy, we thought it'd be interesting to show what it's like to be a character who doesn't have superpowers, what it's like to be that person in a superhero world, and actually control that character."

Shadow of the Colossus Remake is Gorgeous, Kind of Janky
12 years after falling in love with the original Shadow of the Colossus, playing the PS4 remake brought that same rush of beauty, fear, and heartbreak I felt back on the PS2. Fumito Ueda and Team ICO's classic adventure game has, for the most part, aged gracefully. Descending the steps of the temple, riding across the central field, stumbling upon the first Colossi, and ultimately striking it down was one of the most unforgettable moments in gaming history at the time, and remains just as poignant now.
Just to get this out of the way, the PS4 remake is visually rebuilt from the ground up, and absolutely gorgeous. Visually, it's hard to imagine someone being able to tell that it's based on a 2005 game unless they already knew that fact. The textures on the characters, environment, and Colossi are all incredibly-realized. Seriously, even the way Wander's tunic danced in the wind held a mesmerizing quality to it.

Marvel's Spider-Man Gives You All the Powers You Want From the Start
It's always nice to see more of Insomniac's PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game, but you could almost feel the internet deflating when the Paris Games Week trailer took a focus on story. We've known this would be an open world action game since E3 - so why have we still not seen any open world gameplay, more than a year after being announced?
"I think just in terms of our rollout we want to focus on different things", explains creative director Bryan Intihar when I put that question to him. "Trust me, we'll be talking about open world. There's no weird conspiracy or anything like that."
The thing is, I've met more than a few people who simply didn't know this was an open world game at all - so if he can't show us, can he at least tell us how it will work?

AC Origins Microtransactions: What You Need To Know
With more and more big games adding microtransactions in unexpected places, we thought it was important to break down exactly what's available for purchase with real money in Assassin's Creed Origins.
In the grand scheme of things, Origins' microtransactions are pretty harmless, with no randomization or loot boxes. Instead, you can buy Helix Credits to spend on specific cosmetics for you or your mount, legendary weapons, and "Time Saver" items and map markers.
Those Time Savers include in-game money, as well as crafting materials for upgrading and skill points for unlocking new abilities. You can also pay $2 each to automatically reveal the locations of the certain secrets, including Ancient Tombs, Hermit Locations, and Stone Circles, however there's no map for the trickier Papyrus Puzzles.

A Visual History of Hulk
For a guy who's whole look basically boils down to "angry, muscular green guy in torn pants," Hulk's appearance sure has changed a lot over the years. Sometimes he's green. Sometimes he's gray. Sometimes he hangs out on alien planets and gets his Gladiator on. The only thing that never changes is that Hulk is the strongest ones there is.
To celebrate the character's return to the big screen in Thor: Ragnarok, here are Hulk's most memorable looks in the comics, films, TV series and video games.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus Review
Everything that made Wolfenstein: The New Order an excellent single-player first-person shooter is dialed up for round two. With a cast of instantly likeable heroes and bone-chilling villains giving emotional context to its bloody uprising against high-tech Nazis, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus has come to play.
It really is incredible how well this story works, considering how absurd its sci-fi version of 1961 is and how wildly the tone shifts from scene to scene. One moment it's ultra-serious and delivering a sickening dose of venomous racism, abuse, and cold-blooded cruelty. Not that we needed another reason to want to overthrow an alternate-reality Third Reich who won World War 2 and conquered the world, but it's hugely effective in getting the blood boiling. And yet, the next moment it'll transition to scenes of laugh-out-loud comedy before pivoting back to BJ Blazkowicz dealing with his own mortality as he withers away from the wounds he received at the end of The New Order.

Publishers Don't Realize Microtransactions Are Hurting Them, Too
Last week, EA announced that they were closing down Visceral Games, the studio working on a new Star Wars game, essentially because it was too linear and story-based - meaning, exactly what I want from a Star Wars game.
They said the game is instead being "reshaped" to fit the "games as service" brand, which is a business model causing a whole bunch of developers to turn their backs on the type of games I grew up playing - the ones I've loved for my entire life. Of course, Battlefront 2 has a 5-7 hour single-player campaign, but it also has microtransactions that, in the beta, effectively encouraged a pay-to-win, low-key gambling system.

EA: Visceral's Star Wars Game Not Canceled for Being Single Player
The decision to close Visceral Games and refocus the the studio's Star Wars project wasn't made because it was a single-player title, according to Electronic Arts executive vice president Patrick Söderlund.
"This truly isn't about the death of single-player games—I love single-player, by the way—or story and character-driven games," Söderlund told Kotaku. "Storytelling has always been part of who we are, and single-player games will of course continue."
He went on to note that the publisher's decision to refocus the project also "isn't about needing a game that monetizes in a certain way.... At the end of the day, this was a creative decision. Our job is to give people a deep enough experience and story, and it's also to push the boundaries forward. We just didn't think we were getting it quite right."

Resident Evil 7 Doubled Average Time People Spent in PSVR
Resident Evil 7 singlehandedly contributed a large amount of total PlayStation VR use among players.
In an interview with Engadget, a Sony representative revealed Capcom's latest horror game turned out be quite the success in PSVR. Before Resident Evil 7 launched in January 2017, the average play time session in PSVR was around 25 minutes. Resident Evil 7 increased that average time to nearly an hour.
Prior to RE7, most time spent in VR, according to Sony, came from bit-sized play experiences. Part of RE7's success, Sony believes, comes from its genre.
"Different users enjoy different experiences, and it's hard to pinpoint a particular app or experience that is most popular, but we've found that certain genres work very well with VR, and horror is one example," the Sony spokesperson said. "When Resident Evil 7: Biohazard launched earlier this year, the average amount of time PSVR users spent playing doubled."

Bomber Crew Review
Beneath Bomber Crew's cutesy exterior is a tough-as-nails World War II aircraft simulation with an eye toward historical accuracy. Its frantic real-time gameplay sets it apart from other ship sims, and there are lots of interesting options for tackling its tough levels.
Like the classic roguelike FTL: Faster Than Light, Bomber Crew puts you in charge of a vehicle which you must staff and manage as it goes on missions, but the comparisons end there. That's mainly because you can't pause to give orders, so the challenge comes from performing all the duties of a bomber crew, from gunnery to navigation to bombardment, at the same time. Targeting enemy fighters, picking destinations, and lining up bombing runs all work the same way: press the middle mouse button to zoom out into targeting mode, find your target, and hold your sights on it until the circle is filled.

Super Mario Odyssey Review
I literally applauded as the end credits rolled on Super Mario Odyssey. I'd spent the last 15 hours with a giant grin on my face, and somehow the climax put the perfect surprising and delightful exclamation point on the plumber's latest adventure. This is another brilliant redefinition of the very platforming genre he helped popularize 30 years ago.
And best of all, even with the story complete, Odyssey has so much more fun to offer.
Odyssey looks like a straight successor to the Mario 64 and Sunshine line of sandbox 3D Marios, but it is much more than that. Naturally, it evokes, honors, and is sometimes directly inspired by the games that came before it in its characters, music, and mechanics. But it also has new things to say as well, like fusing classic-style 2D gameplay with the 3D world and using a completely new possession mechanic to add constant variety to Mario's abilities and exploits.

Assassin's Creed Origins Review
Assassin's Creed Origins is a dark, multifaceted, deep dive into one of the series' most alluring settings yet: ancient Egypt. As Bayek of Siwa, who is simultaneously compassionate, bold, and driven by revenge, you're strung through a twisted story of pharaohs and corrupt leaders, of love gained and lost, and the plights of the lower class in a time when they were routinely worked to death and nobody batted an eye. It's a tense journey that challenges your concepts of right and wrong, making you consider the morality of those you kill in the process – and, in a dramatic shift for the series, it's all part of a full-on roleplaying game.
I spent 30 hours finishing the main campaign, which took me through just over half of the expansive and beautiful map that recreates ancient Egypt's varied architecture and environments. It's filled with areas of soft sand that are swept by dynamic sandstorms, ranges of treacherous and rocky mountains, catacombs of towering ancient structures built in the names of the gods, and the decaying shacks of the common people. Refreshingly, I discovered all of these things through an organic drive to explore, rather than through the series' traditional structure of climbing to viewpoints to have them unveiled for you. There are plenty more secrets to uncover, and the delightful sense of discovery still hasn't left me.

Gear.Club Unlimited Nintendo Switch Hands-On Preview
Gear.Club Unlimited is in the enviable, and risky, position as the first proper racing game on the Nintendo Switch, and it succeeds, in context.
For a PC sim racing player, it's easy to be frustrated at AAA simcade games that are severely limited by the lack of hardware availability. Why bother wrestling an ultra-realistic Koenigsegg with all the assists off when you're stuck with a non-customizable wheel or a controller? These frustrations don't exist with Gear.Club Unlimited, since the game doesn't present itself as feathering the edge between real-life and virtual racing.
This isn't to say that the game is completely lacking in physics, but rather that it has just enough of it. The real success is the game's pick-up-and-play factor. The varying cars differentiate enough to translate through the controller. You can tell the difference between the weightiness of a BMW M4 and a Lotus Elise's petite figure. The straightforward selection of driving assists will enable less experienced racers to attempt competing with the veterans. The hardest settings provide veteran racers enough of a challenge with the Switch Joy-Cons / Pro Controller to keep wanting to play, but without often-frustrating pseudo-realism. It's fun in the way that older Need for Speed titles are fun. You pick up the controller, choose the car that you have on a wall poster, and race.

Destiny 2 PC Players Reporting Mass Bans
Hundreds of Destiny 2 PC players have reported being banned from the game, with no consensus as to why.
Multiple players have contacted IGN about the problem overnight, and both the Bungie.net forums and the Destiny subreddit have been flooded with posts about the problem.
Some believed this to be connected to certain performance or chat-related overlays interacting with Destiny 2. However, Destiny Community Manager Cozmo has said that these programs are simply blocked, and will not result in bans. Similarly, many players who have been banned say they haven't used any overlays.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is Coming to Mobile in November
Nintendo has dropped the details of its much anticipated Animal Crossing game for smartphones, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
In Nintendo's Animal Crossing-dedicated direct today, we learned the details of its upcoming mobile entry, which will launch for free on iOS and Android mobile late November.
Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp plays out like previous console entries, with a few tweaks. Rather than managing a town, Pocket Camp tasks players with managing a personalized campsite. If you gather materials around your world like cotton or wood you can craft furniture for your camp site by placing an order, but you can also make the process easier by earning - or buying with real world cash - LeafTickets, which can be used to shorten crafting time or more easily acquire materials, among other benefits.

Overgrowth Review
"Animals don't behave like men," said Richard Adams in his rabbit-hero saga Watership Down. "They don't sit down and set their wits to work to devise ways of spoiling other creatures' lives and hurting them."
I'd love to know what Adams would have thought about the 3D action game Overgrowth, which centers on an anthropomorphic kung-fu rabbit that hops around the world dealing pain to the cats, dogs, wolves, and traitorous rabbits that would keep his people enslaved. Or maybe Orwell would have been more fascinated; hints abound that Overgrowth wants to be an Animal Farm-styled allegory tackling racism, classism, and a host of other -isms, and sometimes it comes close. But the whole game reminds me of the main character himself, who often falls short of reaching the distant ledges he jumps toward.

Fire Emblem Warriors Review
When I first heard about Fire Emblem Warriors, I was afraid it would be nothing more than the skins of my favorite Fire Emblem heroes lazily pasted onto a Dynasty Warriors template. It turns out that's not true: this entertaining 20-hour adventure successfully combines many of Fire Emblem's unique strategy elements with some good old-fashioned button mashing.
Fire Emblem Warriors takes place in the Fire Emblem universe, but which one isn't entirely clear. That's because the story – which manages to be both bare-bones and bonkers – never bothers with details. There's some gibberish about a pair of twins having to seal away an evil dragon, and something about gathering magic stones that heroes like Marth and Chrom just happen to possess after being sucked into another dimension. No, it doesn't make any sense, but I honestly didn't care why the valiant samurai Ryoma or the hilariously loquacious Owain magically appeared out of thin air. I was just happy to have them around to help me crush my opponents, which they do quite well.

Stardew Valley Dev Says Bizarre, Helpful Bug Won't Be Patched
We recently stumbled across an extremely strange bug in Stardew Valley which lets players create any item they want based on their character's name, a bug which Stardew Valley developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone confirmed to us will not be patched out.
"I am aware of it, but I don't think I want to fix it," Barone said. "It's not game-breaking, it's kind of amusing, and the likelihood that someone would randomly stumble upon it is extremely low. So I feel like it's okay to leave it, and actually kind of fun."

Team Rocket is a devious crime syndicate who first appeared in the Kanto region of Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue (Pokemon Green in Japan). They've stolen Pokemon, cut off poor Slowpoke's tails, and according to some Lavender Town residents, even killed Pokemon in their mission to dominate the world. Fortunately Red, the protagonist, defeats Team Rocket's boss, Giovanni, sending him into hiding, and the rest of the group into dormancy.

Top 10 Super Mario Games
Mario is, without a doubt, one of the most well known and iconic characters in any medium. He's appeared in over 200 games across about a dozen platforms, and has had at least twice as many jobs. At the end of the day, it's the core Mario games that have kept players coming back for nearly forty years. So, without further ado, these are the Top 10 Mario games of all time.
In Mario's second Game Boy adventure, he has a castle (which he inexplicably owns) stolen from him by none other than his childhood friend, Wario and he must receive the titular six golden coins to break Wario's curse and win the castle back. So, it's pretty safe to say that this ranks among the weirder entries in the Mario series. Not unlike Link's Awakening, the bizarre, otherworldly feel of the Game Boy Mario games only add to the character's charm and appeal. While the original Super Mario Land was modeled after Super Mario Brothers, 6 Golden Coins borrows heavily from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. The overworld map allows you to tackle each of the game's six zones in any order you choose, and in doing so you'll explore an enormous mechanical Mario, the insides of a haunted pumpkin, and of course, Space. Also unique to this entry is the magic carrot power up, which gives Mario's cap rabbit ears and allows him to float past obstacles. Furthermore, one of the boss fights pits Mario against the three little pigs, so, that's pretty great too, I guess. - Zach Ryan

On PS4, Last Frontier has its own PlayLink app, allowing friends of a player to use their phones to help sway the direction of the game.

South Park Devs Talk Delays, Design, and What's Next
For a company with dozens of studios around the world and massive franchises like Assassin's Creed and the Tom Clancy games, it would seem like there's little place for risk in such a big organization. But that's just what Ubisoft San Francisco, the studio behind Rocksmith and South Park: The Fractured But Whole, prides itself on delivering within Ubisoft's lineup.
"If we were making the next Far Cry or another Assassin's Creed, people would say, 'Why are you making it in San Francisco,'" Ubisoft SF head and South Park Executive Producer Nao Higo told IGN with a laugh. "You already have great studios in the rest of the world, in a lot cheaper locations…. We have to be different and take chances, take risks, and do something that maybe the larger organization would shy away from dedicating 1,000 people to work on."

Wolfenstein: The New Colossus Doesn't Have Multiplayer Because it Would "Dilute" the Story Mode
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus has been developed without multiplayer to ensure that the storytelling is not "diluted"
In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, MachineGames' Tommy Tordsson Bjork talked about the team's single-player focus when developing the sequel.
"The only way we can create these super immersive narrative experiences is if we can solely focus on the single-player. Having a multiplayer component in this work process would just dilute it all. That's the danger if you try to do two things at once."
Tjordsson Bjork further went on to clarify that MachineGames do not believe they are a first-person shooter developer.

GameCube Controllers Now Work With Nintendo Switch
There's been an unexpected, unmentioned addition to Nintendo Switch with its 4.0.0 update - GameCube controllers (when using the Wii U's USB adapters) now work with the system.
Twitter user Master Mewking was among the first to discover the new controller support. It's not foolproof as yet, with many users reporting that it takes multiple attempts to pair a pad - perhaps explaining why Nintendo hasn't publicised the change.
The process is, on paper, fairly simple: Make sure your Switch is set to accept wired controllers, plug the adapter in, plug the controller in, choose to pair controllers, then press L and R. Up to four GameCube controllers can be used simultaneously.
