One Piece: Burning Blood Review

When it comes to current games based on One Piece, there isn't much room on the Thousand Sunny pirate ship for neophytes. One Piece: Burning Blood reshapes one of the series' most important arcs into a 3D fighting game that'll confuse anyone outside of its fanbase. But as someone heavily invested in the pirate lifestyle of the long-running manga and anime series, I'm impressed with how just dense the crew is on this voyage, even as I wished for better combat and a broader story in Luffy's newest brawler.

Burning Blood's combat will be immediately familiar to anyone who played the underwhelming crossover J-Stars Victory Vs.+. Burning Blood is all about colorful, noisy, one-on-one 3D battles where you swap between fighters in teams of up to three different characters, and the combat is full of flashy action ripped straight from the source. That style makes the early rounds of battle a visual treat, particularly when Haki users enter the fray to pull off some badass dodges and combos. Unfortunately, Burning Blood needs that flash to compel you to learn its somewhat wonky and chaotic approach to combat.

7 Science Fiction Creations About to Change the World

Science fiction books, TV shows, and movies have long challenged the boundaries of what's possible through the power of discovery. Generations of inventors have grown up inspired by the prophetic vision of filmmakers and writers, and today laboratories across the globe are bringing devices once regarded as futuristic fiction into the world of reality.

Blaster bolts, laser beams, and phasers are a sci-fi staple as old as H.G. Wells. But now the US military freely admits they've developed energy weapons so practical they'll soon be deployed on ships and aircraft, perhaps as soon as 2023.

Mojang Says 'No' to Brands Using Minecraft to Sell Products

Mojang has updated its Commercial Usage Guidelines in a bid to stop companies from using Minecraft to sell a product.

In a post on the Mojang website, the Minecraft maker breaks down what brands can and can't do moving forwards. Specifically, companies can no longer create a Minecraft mod or server which is designed to sell a product. The example Mojang gives is of a restaurant chain making a Minecraft version of their building, then using that image to help sell the chain's food. 'Brand synergy' and all that.

Likewise, building a map or mod to market a TV show or movie is a no go area. From the Mojang post: "if you're a movie studio, you can't make a map that uses Minecraft blocks to build out the fictional world of the movie or its characters, and you can't make an official movie trailer out of gameplay footage from that map or mod."

Fans Protest as Chinese Translations Rename Pokémon Characters

In an effort to translate Pokémon games into traditional and simplified Chinese, Nintendo has essentially renamed Pokémon characters, including Pikachu.

The Pokémon Company recently announced Pokémon Sun and Moon for Nintendo 3DS. These are first Pokémon games to be translated into Mandarin, but in doing so, the efforts overlook Hong Kong's primary language, Cantonese.

According to QZ.com, in Greater China Pokémon will be officially called 精靈寶可夢 -- or "Jingling Baokemeng" in Mandarin (Jingling means "spirit" or "elf," and Baokemeng is a transliteration of Pokémon).

How Big is The Witcher 3's New Map?

For those unaware, The Witcher 3's latest (and final) expansion, Blood and Wine, not only boasts upwards of 25 new hours of gameplay, but also gives players a whole new kingdom - or, to be exact, a duchy - to roam and slay monsters in. We'd heard that it was large, but didn't truly know how big the map was until we got our hands on it. Once we'd roamed around a bit, we decided to work up a visual approximation of Toussaint versus the largest area in Wild Hunt.

Overwatch Review

Overwatch exists at an intersection between design and artistry, a crossroad at which pure tactile joy meets refined, intelligent design to create a rare spark of magic. As a 6v6 multiplayer, objective-based shooter, it finds accessibility not by lowering the skill ceiling, but by broadening the definition of skill. The person with deadshot aim is no more valuable than the person with the decision-making ability to know when a well-timed ability will turn an engagement, or the person with the map-sense to find the optimal locations to place sentry turrets. While it didn't exactly drown me in options, maps, and modes, it's blessed with a multitude of tactical layers, and none of them ever came between me and my enjoyment of its intense, swirling teamfights, and thrilling overtime comebacks.

A Visual History of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first introduced to the world way back in 1984. The original, Mirage Studios comic, created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, was a parody of several existing comic franchises. The success of the comic later spawned a syndicated cartoon program, and from there, Turtlemania swept the nation.

Suddenly the Turtles were everywhere, from video games to breakfast cereals, to an increasingly baffling line of action figures. The first live-action movie, way back in 1990, was a run-away success and spawned two follow-ups.

Here's a look at the Turtles' humble, surprisingly violent beginnings as comic book characters, all the way through to their upcoming appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan.

Samsung Reveals Batman-Themed Galaxy S7 Edge Phone

It probably takes loads of work for Batman to custom-make all his Batarangs, Bat signals and other egotistically named Bat-aphernalia. Luckily, Samsung has done ol' Bruce a solid this time by making its own Batman-themed Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone.

Most territories' versions will include the phone (pre-installed with Batman wallpapers and Injustice), a Batman-themed hardcase, a Samsung Gear VR headset and an actual gold Batarang, presumably for fending off nerdy muggers.

Instead of a normal electrical problem, when he opened it up, he found a dead snake had essentially been burned into the circuit board in two different places.

That's why you should always leave repairs to the professionals.

Gravity Rush 2’s Dynamic New World and Potent Combat

2012's Gravity Rush was a pleasant surprise on Vita; a stylish action game built around a very unique central hook: players could change gravity at will, literally dropping in any direction through the world.

The sequel is shaping up to build on this blueprint nicely, while taking advantage of the PS4's significant grunt and the fact that it's now a big screen experience. I've popped in to see an early build of the E3 demo while at Japan Studio to play The Last Guardian, and I'm glad I did.

The world design makes an immediate impression. Set in an entirely new city, it's reminiscent of a Western European-inspired take on BioShock Infinite's Columbia; island blocks bob about, high up in the sky, while barge-like platforms move between them. Once again the visuals are heavily influenced by comic books and anime, with a wonderfully cel-shaded world and comic book panel cutscenes.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan Review

No matter how you slice it, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan isn't a fulfilling adventure. For as cool as the turtles and the bosses look, and despite hitting a pretty nice balance between classic cartoon nostalgia and entertaining new fans, the most important part of this ninja's arsenal – the combat itself – is too chaotic to enjoy, even over its blink-and-you'll-miss-it length.

Mutants in Manhattan's story is as by-the-comic-book as can be: Shredder and Krang are attempting to take over the world and have dispatched and/or brainwashed rival mutants like Bebop, Rocksteady, Wingnut, and Slash. Whether you've checked out of the TMNT universe since the early 90s cartoon or are an avid watcher of the modern Nickelodeon version, it's pretty easy to jump into Mutants in Manhattan's world. The constants are nice: Donatello is the archetypical tech wizard, Leonardo leads, Michelangelo worships pizza over all else (except maybe nunchucks), and Raphael is pretty salty. While the turtles themselves are as entertaining as ever, April and Splinter are reduced to a static face on comms popups and inventory manager, respectively. I know the turtles are the stars of the show, but they could've used a better supporting cast.

New gameplay details have emerged for The Last Guardian, Sony's hotly anticipated action-adventure game.

Issue 294 of Edge Magazine has early impressions and an interview with designer Fumito Ueda.

The main character will have a "mirrored shield," which can shine a beam of light that acts as a marker for the creature, Trico, to fire a red lightning beam from his tail. Edge's demo used this mechanic to solve environmental puzzles such as removing wooden walls and destroying rock faces.

According to Edge, Trico will apparently be a "free-spirited creature that fragrantly disregards your attempts to tame it." This lack of complete control of the creature is important to Ueda "because there are a lot out there where you can do that. I think I've had enough of them."

PSVR Was 'Truly Awful' on Launch PS4s

The PS4 Neo was introduced because running VR on original launch PS4 tech was "truly awful," an anonymous chief technical officer (CTO) has claimed.

"PSVR was going to be terrible on a

PS4," the source told Edge Magazine. "It was going to be truly awful. Something a bit more powerful starts to bring VR into range. If you want to deal with crazy requirements for performance in VR, you absolutely have to

For clarity, the above quote says "was." As in past-tense. It's possible the source was referencing the state of launch PS4 consoles prior to the introduction of a VR external processing unit, or even launch PS4s prior to Sony unlocking further internal core access.

Charge ahead as soon as that timer hits zero and open the chests before the other players do, and you'll be greeted with a bunch of randomized loot that will either help you take out other players, or defend yourself against them.

Pokemon GO Battle Mechanics, Gym Details Revealed

As Pokemon GO's early testing begins in the United States, The Pokemon Company and developer Niantic revealed new information about the upcoming mobile game.

The augmented reality game will allow players to find and capture over 100 different Pokemon. Players use Poke Balls to catch Pokemon; players will throw them at Pokemon, and hope it stays shut. Poke Balls and other "special" items are available at PokeStops—which are located at "interesting" public spots like art installations and historical monuments.

Pokemon GO players can engage in gym battles as part of one of three teams. Gyms, like PokeStops, are located in real-world locations.

Gyms are up for grabs in Pokemon GO. Players use their captured Pokemon to battle with other Pokemon assigned to other's gyms, and have the chance to claim it for their own once the gym's prestige level reaches zero. The claimant must then assign their own Pokemon to the gym and battle others to restore its prestige.

"Epic at the time, and I say this very carefully because they've really kind of changed into their own entity.... The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Blood and Wine Review

We're told that The Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt marks the last great ride of Geralt of Rivia, so far as developer CD Projekt Red is concerned. I like to think there are signs that this isn't the case, as much of its storyline revolves around the return of a friend long thought permanently lost. But even if it is, it's about as good as a sendoff as we could ask for. The sun may shine brighter here than it ever has for the Butcher of Blaviken, and there's a undercurrent of hope that's been lost in the flood of despair in previous entries, but fittingly enough, above all this is a tale of the pain of letting go.

Most of the expansion's strength comes from the way it makes a clean break with the rest of The Witcher 3, shuttling us far from the corpse piles of Velen and the gray gloom of Skellige mere moments after accepting the relevant quest from a message board. The destination is Toussaint, a lovely place of rolling hills carpeted with vineyards and bathed in a warm light that seems to chase away the blues. It's a smart shift, as it avoids any guilt that Geralt should be busying himself with the bigger issues of the region (as was sometimes the case in Hearts of Stone). In sunny Toussaint, Geralt is just a famous witcher with no urgent need to save the world hanging over his head, and in the context of an expansion the tale is all the better for it.

Star Ocean 5 Broadens Its Appeal by Staying True to Its JRPG Roots

One of the major, persistent narrative threads engulfing the games industry since the turn of the century concerns the Japanese game industry's attempts to appeal to Western audiences. From Metal Gear Solid to Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry to Ninja Gaiden, Japanese developers have sought to combat the idea that they fail to see games from a global perspective.

By way of a fix there has been a trend for Japanese games to mimic many of the more cemented and popular ideas typically associated with Western design. Metal Gear Solid's move towards an open-world setting and Final Fantasy's ever more obvious move towards photo-realistic representations of characters, for instance, are two of the more high-profile examples.

Overwatch Review In Progress

Overwatch exists at an intersection between design and artistry, a crossroad at which pure tactile joy meets refined, intelligent design to create a rare spark of magic. It's blessed with a multitude of tactical layers, but none of them ever come between me and my enjoyment of the frenetic, minute-to-minute action. As a 6v6 multiplayer, objective-based shooter, it finds accessibility not by lowering the skill ceiling, but by broadening the definition of skills. The person with deadshot aim is no more valuable than the person with the decision-making ability to know when a well-timed ability will turn an engagement, or the person with the map-sense to find the optimal locations to place sentry turrets. It bobs and weaves almost perfectly between being the quick-fix adrenaline hit you might want after a long day of work, and the thoughtful, strategic multiplayer experience that becomes the center of evening-long binges with friends.

I Am Setsuna Is a Love Letter to the 16-bit Days of RPGs

I Am Setsuna takes the familiar pieces of Chrono Trigger – its classic active time battles and awesome tech-based attack system – and builds a much darker world around them. Tokyo RPG Factory's one-hour demo presents environments full of muted colors, a quaint mountain village setting, and depressing consequences. The heroine Setsuna has a major role to play in this dire narrative, as she sets off on a perilous journey to sacrifice herself in order to save the world from the wrath of monsters. "Setsuna means a type of poignant sorrow in Japanese," director Atsushi Hashimoto told IGN at GDC 2016, as he hinted at the project's overall tone.

The development team have never shied away at name-dropping I Am Setsuna's inspiration, but it's difficult not to feel poignant sorrow whenever a spiritual follow-up to Chrono Trigger gets mentioned. Chrono Trigger, a one-of-a-kind product of the mid-'90s RPG scene, has stood the test of time as one of the greatest video games ever made. The fabled Dream Project collaboration brought together the top-talent of the RPG genre to create an utterly fantastic singular work. But feelings of melancholy don't come from the game itself per se, rather the sad reality that one of the greatest video games of all time never got a proper follow-up. While the sequel, called Chrono Cross, blazed its own trail on the PlayStation, dozens of the first game's incredibly well-thought out ideas fell to the wayside over the course of 20 years.

Bethesda debuted its Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4 last week, and some players have experienced serious performance issues.

The developer is assuring players it's "actively working" on more improvements. Bethesda reportedly "made optimizations" based on Far Harbor beta feedback, though some are still experiencing issues. Bethesda has not commented on which issues it's working to fix.

Players on the Fallout 4 sub-reddit suggest that Far Harbor's dense fog is the culprit for the game's frame rate problems. In IGN's Far Harbor review, we found the fog more annoying than threatening.

Salt and Sanctuary Review

Forget about mages and warriors—in an RPG with a name like Salt and Sanctuary, I figured it was only appropriate to save the world as a chef. It's one of the eight starting classes, after all, and thus, clad in apron and armed with a three-foot iron pot and a handful of potatoes, I left the sanctuary of my galley to slay the pirates stealing our princess from our ship and murdering my crewmen. Larry never brained Curly with such vigor. Gordon Ramsay never unleashed such spite.

At last I made it to the deck, where I faced off with what looked like Cthulhu himself. I tossed a potato at him. He killed me in two hits. At last, I awoke on a far shore. Sound a little like Dark Souls? It's no accident. Salt and Sanctuary pulls liberally from From Software's series for this 2D adventure. In less capable hands, it might have devolved into parody, but instead Salt and Sanctuary establishes itself as a lovingly crafted reimagining that usually succeeds in capturing the spirit of From Software's adventures in a format that initially seems incompatible with it.

Cliff Bleszinski Reveals His Favorite Gears of War Game

Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski stopped by the IGN office to discuss his history at Epic Games and shared with us why his favorite entry in Microsoft's beloved cover-based shooter series is Gears of War 3.

In the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, the Boss Key Productions co-founder said that while many still believe Gears 1 is the series' best installment, the third entry tops his list because "that's where we really honed things and had dedicated servers and everything. We had multiple game types, different characters, women in the battle.... It was cool."

For Bleszinski, Gears of War 3 was "kind of the culmination of everything," with the game's conclusion serving as a metaphor for his experience relaxing on the Carolina coast, and the character Anya Stroud (and her relationship with Marcus Fenix) drawing inspiration from his wife Lauren.

Oculus Rift Anti-Piracy Update Allows for Even More Piracy

An Oculus Rift security update seen by many to be a response to Revive - the mod that allows players to play Oculus-exclusive games on the HTC Vive VR headset - has backfired, allowing for full-scale game piracy.

Talking to Motherboard, Revive's secretive developer, Libre VR explained that the update - which now includes a pre-game launch check to see if an Oculus is being used to play - actually allows for the entire security check to be bypassed.

Huge Fallout 4 Fan Mod Will Be Bigger than Far Harbor

Fallout 4 expansion Far Harbor released last week, and became Bethesda's largest ever piece of DLC. However, an upcoming fan project will be even bigger.

According to VG24/7, Fallout Cascadia will be a mod which takes players to Seattle a few decades after the events of the main game. It has been in production for six months, and is being made by a team of 18.

More information about the project can be found on the mod's Tumblr page. "The scale of this project is a land area that is just a bit smaller than Fallout 3, but more quests and locations than Fallout 4's Far Harbor DLC," reads the description.

EA / Origin Access Members Can Play Mirror's Edge 5 Days Early

A trial of Mirror's Edge Catalyst is coming to subscribers of EA Access and Origin Access.

Catalyst is due for release on June 7, however you can play a six hour trial early from June 2 if you're signed up to one of EA's subscription services.

EA trials have often been 10 hours long before, so it can be assumed this shorter trial is to prevent you from finishing the game before it's out.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst has been delayed a couple of times now, with the original release date being February 23.

Halo 5 Warzone Firefight Expected to Drop in June

Halo 5: Guardians' Warzone Firefight is scheduled to release at the end of June, 343 Industries announced.

The game's next update—Hog Wild—is expected to drop at the end of this month, but the developer recently decided to hold much of its "bigger items" until the Warzone Firefight release.

Along with the PvE mode, 343 Industries will include new game updates, features, REQs, and "plenty more" in the June update. It'll be Halo 5: Guardians' "largest release to date," and the developer will be unveiling more about it in the "coming weeks."

Players can expect the Hog Wild REQs at the end of this month. Halo 5: Guardians' Memories of Reach update launched earlier in May, bringing with it Halo: Reach Noble Team–inspired REQs and fan-favorite Infection mode.

Fruit Ninja: Live-Action Family Movie in the Works

Halfbrick Studios' popular mobile game Fruit Ninja is getting a live-action film adaptation.

According The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be a family-friendly comedy that "centers on ninjas with an inexplicable vendetta against produce."

Tripp Vinson of Vinson Films is producing the film in partnership with developer Halfbrick Studios. Tara Farney and Sam White will executive produce, with J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani—the writing duo behind the in-development film adaptation of How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack—penning the script.

Giant Overwatch Action Figures Unveiled Across the World

Overwatch made a big promotional splash today, emphasis on big, when three giant action figures of characters from the game were unveiled in Los Angeles, California (Tracer), Paris, France (Genji), and Busan, South Korea (Pharah).

Each figure, standing about 15 feet tall, was housed in action-figure packaging complete with accessories, stats on the back, and a "Try Me!" button that, when pushed, made a part of the figure light up.

I went down to Hollywood Blvd to check out the Tracer figure, which was planted right on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (in front of the star belonging to Britney Spears, no less). Being in the middle of a busy tourist area, tons of people were taking pictures, although none seemed to know what it was, save for one teenage girl who ran up, excited as can be, talking about how much she couldn't wait to play as Tracer, her favorite character.

Fallout 4: Far Harbor DLC Review

Far Harbor may be perpetually gloomy, but it's big: this expansion presents a whole island's worth of some of the strongest quest content we've seen in Fallout 4 yet. It's packed with interesting characters who present tough, morally gray decisions, and their outcome had me feeling like I'd left a real mark on this self-contained region.

Much in the same way that Fallout 4's main quest begins as a simple search for a missing child before blooming into a region-shaping battle, Far Harbor lures you to its island in the course of a missing persons' investigation taken on by the Valentine Detective Agency (which means you must have gotten far enough to meet Nick Valentine, around level 20) and then introduces you to the far more intriguing and mysterious real reason you're here. Each of the three factions competing for survival and control of the island – the Far Harbor townspeople, the Children of Atom cultists, and the synth refugees – is well developed, with internal conflicts as well as external, and each has interesting characters that are strongly voice acted. Most notably, synth leader DiMA's calm but intense performance as he raises some big questions about synths who don't know they're synths.

Those who backed Yooka-Laylee can expect a playable slice of the game soon.

It will only be available to those Kickstarter backers that paid into the Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor at a high enough level. Those that did can expect this slice of Yooka-Layle sometime in July.

Besides the demo Playtonic also revealed a few details about the game's setting and plot. The full breakdown can be found on the company's website, but the major reveal is the game's antagonist.

Gears of War Creator on How Multiplayer Almost Got Cut

Despite becoming one of Xbox 360's most popular and influential multiplayer games, the original Gears of War nearly launched without a competitive multiplayer component.

In the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered (airing next Tuesday), series creator Cliff Bleszinski explained why, noting they "were under intense pressure from Microsoft to get the game out for holiday" and the company "didn't really think the cover-based gameplay would be any fun."

The team initially created "maps that felt like a lot like Counter-Strike," but discovered the game's "slow clunkiness and slow turning speed" made for an experience that "was kind of frustrating" when other players managed to get behind you. It wasn't until the map Gridlock was created that things began to fall into place, as the "half-donut" design fostered the "hide and go kill" gameplay that fans have come to love.
