Adventure on Clover Island Pays Homage to Classic Platformers

Skylar & Plux: Adventure on Clover Island is angling to fill a void left by the absence of classic platformers over the past decade, Grip Digital's Petr Ciesarik tells me at E3. Developed by five students from Sweden as part of a student project, Grip Digital took on the game because they saw an opportunity to scratch an itch they -- and they assumed many other gamers -- would have.

"It's the time for us. Platformers are making a comeback," he told me. "We feel that there is a lack of these types of games today. They are missing in the last decade, so we want to come back with these types of games."

The core of Skylar & Plux is simple and straightforward, which is exactly what you want from a game that's intentionally following in the footsteps of Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank. The controls feel familiar as you jump, flip, and slash your way through a colorful world evocative of something you would have found on the Nintendo 64 or PlayStation 2. Even the story is something Ciesarik describes as "classic" to the genre.
